visit to Santa here is more than an opportunity to ask for an American Girl doll or an Xbox 360: You’ll get a lesson in the Christmas spirit, too. “I’ve been trying to educate them that Christmas isn’t just about receiving,” said Santa Claus in an interview Friday, Nov. 30, in his Pioneer Park cottage. “It’s about giving.” Though busy talking with children all around the world, Santa has a soft spot in his heart for Cooperstown, and stops by the village whenever his busy schedule allows, meeting kids in his cottage, stopping by the PTO

I asked her a little more and found out he was in Afghanistan.” Santa cares. He spends a few minutes talking with each child, not just about Ian Austin/ OTSEGO.santa what they want, but what’s going on in their lives. “I Santa presents a baseball card from his favorite team – the Red Stockings see the way they’re pro– to Turner Dolata, who paused at Santa’s Cottage in Pioneer Park while

SANTA/From B1 gressing in school and I try to encourage them to do their best,” he said. “I ask a lot of the older ones – fourth grade and up – what it is that they’re doing to help those less fortunate than them. They can help at food pantries, give to a clothing or toy drive, read at the nursing homes and be good brothers and sisters.” During the interview, Abby and Amanda Condon stopped by for a visit, and Abby got treated to a special storytime with Santa, who excused himself to read to her from a pop-up book, “Christmas Around the World.” He takes out his special

pocket watch, which helps explain to kids how he can deliver all those presents in one night. “I head west,” taking advantage of Time Zones, he said. “My very first stop is Hawaii, then Australia, then Japan.” When night falls in Hawaii on Christmas Day, he said, you know he’s reached Cooperstown on Christmas Eve. Moments later, Morgan Dolata and son Turner, who came in from Ohio to tour the Hall of Fame, peeked in. “The Indians didn’t do too good,” said Morgan. “That’s why we came to see you – thought maybe you could give us a new pitcher.”

Santa had another surprise for Turner, a specially produced Santa baseball card for the young fan. “My favorite team is the Red Stockings,” he said. Even pets can come by to ask for some presents and pose for a picture. “Dogs want a warm bed and lots of treats,” Santa said. And for those who are concerned that a lack of fireplace will keep Santa from stopping by, worry not. He has a magic key that unlocks all the doors, so make sure that you have chocolate chip cookies – his favorite – and a cold glass of milk waiting. “I like white skim milk,” he said. “I’ve been trying to slim down lately.”

AllOTSEGO.dining&entertainment

arrived from a 20-year-old who said he was “proud” of still “believing” in Santa, a gift reserved for the young (and young at heart). Still, she tells children not to worry if they haven’t been perfect. “Even Santa gets a little grouchy,” she said, pulling out the book, “Are You Grumpy, Santa?” “But in the end, he realizes that when others do nice things for you, it takes away the grumpies,” she said. “It’s a good lesson for us all.” Especially, she added, when the North Pole gets as busy as it does this time of year. “That Christmas spirit is so important,” she said. “You have to remember what it’s all about—getting

seeing them happy.” As part of this exclusive interview, she shared some of the secrets of how to know that Santa has come by your house. “Take a picture of the room the night before,” she said. “Santa’s a little plump, and he’s got that big sack, so he can’t help but jostle things around.” She also suggests leaving out cookies that parents don’t like. Lately she’s been trying to get Santa to eat a little healthier, so he’s been bringing home some of the cookies for her. She, like Santa, loves chocolate chip. Her wish for Christmas? “I want to see people smile and hear people sing.”

The OTSEGO Newspapers – The Freeman’s Journal and Hometown Oneonta – are joining with The Salvation Army to make a joyful Christmas for area families through its Angel Tree Program. This tradition dates back to 1921 with the creation of The Freeman’s Journal Christmas Fund by Editor & Publisher Rowan D. Spraker Sr., as a way for neighbors to help others enjoy a happy holiday. This week marks the 91st year of this community tradition, partnering this year with The Salvation Army. The Salvation Army has gathered Christmas wish lists on this Christmas tree, grouped by family. Embrace one individual or an entire family, every gift is appreciated. Shop by yourself or with friends and colleagues. The more the merrier! Gifts should be both new and unwrapped (price tags removed please), and received no later than December 11 (to allow the elves time for wrapping and loading). Gifts may be dropped of at the offices of The Freeman’s Journal, 21 Railroad Ave., Cooperstown, or at the Salvation Army Chapel, 25 River St., Oneonta. Questions?
