he hottest show in Oneonta isn’t at Foothills or the Southside Cinema – it’s at the SUNY Oneonta Planetarium. The monthly Thursday night planetarium display has sold out for the entire semester. “There’s a lot of demand for our program,”
said Dr. Jason Smolinski, the SUNY physical science assistant professor who hosts the hour-long happening. “Every show has been sold out.” In addition to the Thursday night events, he also uses the planetarium for his intro and advanced astronomy classes, and opens the facilities for pupils in local schools. “A lot of students didn’t even know we had this,” said Smolinski. “It’s been here for 50 years.” Please See PLANETS, B2

SUNY Planetarium Becoming Most Popular Show In County
Dr. Jason Smolinski, director of SUNY Oneonta’s planetarium, shows off Taurus, his favorite constellation. “It has a supernova in it,” he says.
PLANETS/From B1 The mechanical “star-ball” of old was replaced four years ago by a Digistar 4, a digital-projection system that replicates the night sky over Oneonta at “Astronomical Twilight,” an hour and a half after sunset, with images retrieved from actual data. From Oneonta’s skyline, armchair astronauts can “fly” all over the galaxy at the touch of a joystick. “I really like to fly through space and watch all the stars fly by,” he said. “But I have to be careful not to move it too fast: I have kids who are convinced the room is moving, not the sky.” The show takes viewers through the Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy, past asteroids and supernovas and through simulated phases of the moon. “I try to give them a sample of everything that’s out there,” he said. “The sky various by season, so every few months, it’s a completely different show.” He even takes viewers through the rings of Saturn. “I want to show them that the rings aren’t solid – they’re dust,” he said. At the show on Thursday, Dec. 6, viewers toured Jupiter, the Orion nebula, Uranus and the Crab Nebula. Smolinski’s favorite constellation to show is Taurus. “It has a supernova in it,” he said, pulling up the brightly colored mass on the domed ceiling. “I go by what’s in a constellation.” In future shows, he plans to program in footage from the Mars Rover and other planetary exploration, as well as some entertaining elements, such as the Death OTSEGO.life

SUNY Oneonta Planetarium History
T
he history of the Oneonta College Planetarium extends to the early 1960s with the acquisition of a Spitz A3P center-mounted optomechanical projector, sound system, and 24-foot dome from Spitz, Inc. of Chadds Ford, Pa. Visitors sat on padded benches encircling the projector. Augmented by several small perimeter-mounted slide projectors, the facility provided vivid depictions of the sky as seen from Earth today or extending millennia into the past or future. Over the next two decades the facility’s founding director, Jack F. Maier, established a tradition of astronomical collegiate teaching and public service, inviting in schools and Scout groups. Particularly popular were his annual Christmas shows incorporating theories of the “Star of
Bethlehem.” These persisted several years past his formal retirement in 1985. The second director, Dr. Michael P. Merilan, continued the facility’s tradition of extensive use for college astronomy classes and public outreach. Crossing into the 21st century, these ranged from training for K-12 student science competitions to unique enrichment experiences for specialized youth and adult groups. The planetarium underwent a full update in 2008 with a complete reconfiguration of the physical layout and installation of a center-mounted Evans and Sutherland (Salt Lake City, Utah) Digistar 3 SP2HD full dome digital projection and sound system along with reclined seating, carpeting, and wall treatments - plus establishment of an adjacent display gallery and classroom. – From www.oneonta.edu

Star or the “Star Trek” Enterprise. Afterwards, weather permitting, viewers are invited to view the night sky themselves through the observatory’s 16inch telescope or, in some cases, with their own eyes. “Deneb is one of the most distant stars that we can see without a telescope,” he said. “Next year there’ll be some comets,” he said. “They might even be naked-eye comets – you won’t need a telescope.” And in 2024, everyone can look skyward for a solar eclipse. “I have a lot of control over the universe,” he joked. “I have to be careful not to let it go to my head.” IF YOU GO: Google “SUNY Oneonta planetarium” and click “reservations” link. Beekman Boys, ‘Amazing Race’ Behind Them, Pay Off Mortgage, Plan To Wed BOYS/From B1 the “Amazing Race” reality show. “Josh would sit right here on the couch and Brent sat on the floor,” said Lynda Wiseman, who came out from Cooperstown for the party. “They’d tell us about how the show was filmed, make comments – it was always fun.” In winning the aroundthe-world contest, Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Brent
Ridge took home the $1 million prize, beating Chippendales dancers Jaymes and James, Team Longhorn Lexi and Trey and twins Nadiya and Natalie Anderson. The Boys weren’t at the finale party, but were interviewed later by phone from New York City. ”What people don’t see is how exhausting it is,” said Josh. “You’re traveling to nine countries in three
weeks, you’re always on, always playing the game. You never get downtime, so when we don’t see a clue, it’s because we’re really exhausted.” It was a tense two hours for Beekman fans, who watched on three TVs, including a portable one in the kitchen so no one had to miss a moment while getting dessert. They jeered when show villains Natalie and Nadia called Josh and Brent “the evil gays.” They held their breath when Brent had to escape a straightjacket while suspended 100 feet in the air, cringed when the boys got two wrong pizza deliveries on their own New York City turf, and waited on edge as the big win came down to a cab race between the Chippendales and the Beekmans. “If you get up during the show, no one will tell you what happened,” warned Richard Pfau. The couple endured 12 weeks of trash talk, injuries and losses, through the final challenge, where Josh successfully managed to pair and raise flags marked “hello” and “goodbye” in the language of every
Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Brent Ridge have made the 1802 Beekman House in Sharon Springs nationally famous, first through “The Fabulous Beekman Boys” on the Food Channel, now by winning $1 million in CBS’ “The Amazing Race.”
country they visited on the show’s 12-week run. “I had no idea,” said Beekman COO Megan Holken of the outcome. “I think it surprised a lot of people, including themselves.” The prize money will help the Brent and Josh fulfill delayed goal: To pay off the mortgage on the Beekman House, allowing Josh to move up from the city to the live at the farm full time. Additionally, they will be buying a new storefront on Main Street – Leila Durkin’s Village Hall – to house
Beekman 1802 and launch their newest brand, a tomato sauce made from a 1929 heirloom tomato, profits from which will go towards helping other farmers pay off their loans. “We liked it because it was going to be our mortgage lifter,” said Brent. “But now that our mortgage is paid off, we can help other farmers.” And keeping with the positive attitude and general kindness viewers had come to recognize, the Boys said “thank you” to their fellow racers with customized
gingerbread cookies, photos of which are posted in the “7 Billion Thank You” blog post at www.beekman1802. com And now that the race is done, the couple looks forward to a quiet, Upstate Christmas, bringing home with them a few new lessons learned on the road. “I have a lot more confidence,” Josh said. “There aren’t many more challenges you can take on bigger than ‘The Amazing Race.’ We weren’t the biggest or the strongest, but we took it on.” “And speaking of challenges ...” Brent said. The two are planning to marry in the spring, and they’re inviting all their fellow racers, including Natalie and Nadia. “I’m sure the Twinnies are getting a little flack for what they said, but we love them – all of their trash talking was just that. It’s no different than a high school football team, there was no evil, no malcontent.” And after that? “We’ll just go back to our normal, boring, fabulous Beekman lives.”
