Within Year, FDR Would Be Proclaiming New Deal At Chicago Convention FDR/From B1 Yes, Owen D. Young was a famous man. But as ODY’s first commencement speaker he invited another young man who, not then, but very soon, would become even more famous. At the time, Young’s friends were promoting the titan from Van Hornesville himself for the Democratic presidential candidate in 1932. Did he know that the young man sitting modestly by his side would outstrip him within a year and go on to be one of the greatest figures of the 20th Century? That man was Franklin Delano Roosevelt, then governor of New York State. Eleven months later,

on July 2, 1932, he would be delivering his acceptance speech
at the Democratic Convention in Chicago, declaring: “I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a New Deal for the American people.” In June 1931, FDR was not an unknown. He had been Woodrow Wilson’s undersecretary of the Navy during World War I, when Young had first met him. He had been governor since 1929. Graduation day, the governor had been driven in from Albany, a fact noted in Young’s welcoming remarks: “The governor took less time today coming to Van Hornesville than I had to take as a boy to get to Fort Plain. Twelve miles was more than 70 now. The capital of the Empire State was far
– or so far away.” The graduation class consisted of seven girls and one boy. The valedictorian was Rita Moyer, who passed away only recently, according to Ronald Smith, the hamlet’s historian and formerly, for eight years, president of the Van Hornesville Community Corp., formed by Young for the betterment of his hometown. “Model Ts were parked from here to there,” said Smith, looking out the window from the original wing of the school and pointing across the playing fields toward the town green and general store. Graduation exercises then were outside, in the corner of the field
next to Otsquago Creek, just north of the old stone bridge. In his 70s now, Smith was too young to remember the happening himself, but he’s talked to many people over the years who did witness it. A couple of strapping men who accompanied FDR, folks later realized, were bodyguards, “but this was just a laid-back town and nobody realized it then,” said Smith. In his remarks, Young expressed high hopes for the school he had recently launched. One day, perhaps, ODY would graduate a future governor, “then the governor will be your friend the way Please See FDR, B4

FDR/From B3 this governor is mine now.” Ever the politician, Roosevelt’s remarks didn’t focus on his plans or programs, but on his host, who he described as “a very necessary factor in almost every forward-looking step of the nation.” According to “Owen D. Young & American Enterprise,” Josephine Young Case’s biography of her dad – co-written with her hus-
band, Everett Case, retired president of Colgate University: “Roosevelt spoke well and warmly, mentioning his own ‘rural’ background.” “If some of his neighbors” – Republicans, presumably – “muttered their dissent, it went unnoticed,” the Cases wrote. “And, thanks to the flood of press reports which the occasion evoked, the Van Hornesville school became, almost overnight, the best-
known rural school in the United States.” And that continues, as Young’s renown brought Madame Curie, Princess Beatrix and other notables to the rural school. Owen D. Young Central School was also notable in that it was one of the first central schools in New York State, combining the oneroom schoolhouses from Starkville, Wiltse Hill, The Chyle and other local neigh-
borhoods, Smith said. That the monumental FDR would have delivered the address at a rural commencement is remarkable enough. Even moreso is that 22 years earlier his cousin, President Theodore Roosevelt, was six miles to the west, dedicating the Jordanville Public Library. (TR’s sister, Corinne, was married to Douglas Robinson, builder of Gelston Castle.)
