used to sit on this fence and shag foul balls,” said Gary Laing, slapping the side of the Damaschke Field fence. “If you brought one back, Sam Nader would give you a soda or a hot dog.” Now, inspired by The Dean of Oneonta Baseball’s devotion to keeping baseball in the City of the Hills, Laing, the owner of The Shipping Room, is preparing for his first season as owner of the Oneonta Outlaws. “He took good care of us,” said Laing. In the winter, Laing and other neighborhood kids would slip through a hole in the fence to play softball on the famous field. In the summer, Laing got his start on the “grasshopper” league
and went on to play for the Elks’ Little League team. At OHS, he pitched a season with the Yellowjackets. And the diamond was where he met one of his closest friends, now-attorney Mike Getman, who is part of Laing’s non-profit Oneonta Outlaws Baseball Club. “He hit a grand slam off me,” said Laing. “We talked after the game, and we’ve been friends ever since then – that was 42 years ago.” “Encouraged” by his two sons, Josh, 10, and Chris, 11, Laing returned to Damaschke in 2011 to start watching Outlaws games. “Soon we were going to every game and getting to know the players.” In 2012, the Laings hosted pitcher Nathan Abel and first-baseman Zander Wiel at their home, and that expanded over the summer. “The whole team was coming over every night – we’d feed Please See LAING, B3

Organizers Paula Fassler, left, and Bobbi Harlem make sure everything’s just so.
They arranged the runway “like a chapel” so that brides can envision what they’ll look like walking down the aisle, just like on the real day. Morris Tent Rentals, one of the main sponsors, will be set-
ting up a mock reception table. Upstairs, brides will be able to sample “culinary delights” and cakes. With over 30 vendors, there’s something for every piece of the wedding, including a kiltmaker who drove from Highland, in the Hudson Valley, to promote her wares. “She responded to our call for vendors and we were thrilled.” Vendors will be featured in 15-minute “Spotlight Specials” to lure brides to their exhibits. “One group is bringing a photo booth,” said Harlem. “They’ll even have all the props.” One of the important parts of putting the show together was raising Oneonta’s profile as a destination for will-be brides. “We reached out to places like Cobleskill,” said Harlem. “Most people aren’t going to want to travel to a show in Albany.” There’s also a grand-prize drawing for a romantic trip for two on Sunday.

It Just Seemed Natural For Gary Laing To Purchase Oneonta Outlaws LAING/From B1 them, have a good time.” A week before the end of the season, he had a conversation that would change his life. “I asked Steve Pindar if they were looking for investors,” he said.
“No,” replied Pindar, the Outlaws’ GM. “The team is for sale.” After talking with thenowners Keith Rogers and Dan Scaring, Laing brought Getman on as his attorney and, after a few months of negotiations, the team was
sold. “It was never about the money,” said Laing. “My part of buying this team was to keep baseball in Oneonta.” Bringing on Joe Hughes – Nader passed the city’s “Mr. Baseball” mantle to the OHS athletic director
last summer – as team coach was “a five-second decision.” And with him come two former OHS players from last year’s championship winning team, Michael Calkins and Sean Getman, Mike’s son. “We’ve got players
‘Love All’ Updates Shocker From 1960s NOVEL/From B1 lication. In the new novel, due for publication June 25 – it can be pre-ordered on amazon. com – a family’s discovery of the old novel unleashes a flood of long-buried secrets – sex, crime and infidelity – that threaten to repeat in the Cole family’s life. The original “Sex Cure” follows a doctor who uses a small town hospital as his private seraglio, seducing nurses until one of them becomes pregnant. After a botched abortion, she falls into a coma, but not before naming the father of her baby and exposing the culture of infidelity and fast-living in the small town. “People assumed they were in the book,” said Hugh

MacDougall, Cooperstown village historian. “Love All” updates the plight of 86-year old serial adulterer Bob Cole, who finds his wife, Joanie, reading the book at the breakfast table and worries that he might be named. “It’s all anyone could talk about,” writes Wright, a 1996 CCS grad and classmate of novelist Lauren Groff. “In hushed voices and shocked whispers, at the First National Bank and at the A&P … cast lists were quietly being drawn up and filled in with real-life names.” Publication of “The Sex Cure” immediately caused a scandal. Although it took place in the fictional town of Richfield Corners, many of the places were
clearly Cooperstown centric – Newberry’s, Glimmerglass Restaurant – and names resembled those of local families, including a “Clark Stevens,” portrayed as a feudalistic landlord who owned half the town. It didn’t take long for folks to put the pieces together. On Halloween, Moore’s Lake Street home was vandalized. In “Love All,” Anne Obermeyer, determined to chase away the author scandalizing her family, is the one who writes obscenities on Doran’s home, only to, years later, find not only a copy of the infamous potboiler under her mother’s mattress, but herself wrapped up in an adultery scandal.
coming from Grand Canyon, Northeastern, Mercer, Binghamton and others,” said Pindar. In addition to the roster, Laing already has a few more plans in place for the season. “We’re going to offer senior meals,” he said.
“And my kids want slushies, so they’re dictating some of that policy.” “We want to make this affordable family fun,” added Pindar. “I don’t want a $5 hot dog – you can’t charge that and have people enjoy it.”
