ooks of love poetry should carry the Surgeon General’s warning: “Love poetry is hazardous to your health. Love
poetry in libraries should be locked under “Posted: No Trespassing signs. Quarantine whatever and wherever the plague of love poetry has spread. Valentine’s Day has come again! Couples, gather your rosebuds
while ye may, but spare the rhyming couplets, okay? Give candy, flowers – but there ought to be a law about poetry. In fact there was a law. Plato outlawed poetry and threw the poets out of his Republic. The sport of
throwing poets out of republics is another tradition that is honored now and then, here and there, to this day, and for good reason. Stamp out love poetry: It perturbs the brain, excites the spirit, Please See CUPID, A5

ur story starts 65 years ago,â€? said Jack Clark. “But we were in love before that,â€? adds his wife Marjorie. Marjorie and Jack Clark were classmates at Unadilla High School and took their first date in 1945, when Unadilla – and the rest of the United States – was celebrating the end of World War II. “He took me for a ride on the crossbar of his bicycle,â€? she said. After high school, Jack joined the Army and was stationed in Korea. Home on furlough, he came down with exhausting mononucleosis and Marjorie was there by his side, taking care of him. He proposed right then – with a ring. With Jack on his way back overseas, the newly engaged couple had to keep in touch, “not with e-mail, not with telephone,â€? she recalled. “This gal wrote to me every day,â€? Jack said. “I was the talk of the camp – no one else had a letter from their fiancĂŠe every day of every week of every month.â€? The couple was married on July 24, 1948. One Night Turned Into Whole Life
Going Off To College Together Cemented Young Clarks’ Marriage

The couple was married in 1954. His father wrote to him shortly thereafter, “I’m so glad you married Sarah,” he said. “I thought you were going to marry a communist.” Sarah played viola and violin – her speciality, baroque music – and wrote music. (Her family summered on Otsego Lake, christening their camp “Mouse Hall,” after the nursery rhyme.) The newlyweds started a ceramics business, where he threw and she painted. “I told her mother, ‘The clay where Sarah comes from is too sticky, and the clay where I come from is too sandy – but when you mix them together, you get what ceramicists call ‘the perfect body’.’” “Just like you and Sarah!” said his mother-in-law. The two continued to summer in Cooperstown as their three daughters came along, Tara, Nicole and Sasha. Their father was always building swings and, once, while trying one out, he got dizzy. After discussing his symptoms with a friend at Bassett Hospital, it was discovered that he had such high cholesterol that he needed a sextuple bypass. It was a terrifying moment for Sarah, but he came through just fine. “We don’t feel terribly old,” she said. “I offered to build them a swingset at the hospital to use for tests,” he said. “But they said they had machines for that.”

Despite “consternation” from family, the two packed up and moved to Chicago to study at the Moody Bible Institute. “At that time it was unusual for married couples to college together” said Marjorie, “But we did.” Jack went onto seminary and was ordained as a minister, but decided he was more interested in teaching, and the couple

returned home so Jack could get a master’s in education at SUNY Oneonta, then a doctorate at SUNY Buffalo. “I would have never graduated from all those schools without her,” he said. “She stayed up late typing all my papers.” He taught sixth grade in Otego and, later, taught elementary education at SUNY. That first leap of faith – going off to Moody together – taught them a lesson they would carry for the rest of their lives. “If a problem came up, we had to solve it ourselves,” said Marjorie. “We couldn’t run

home and complain to our parents – it was a good experience in working things out together.” The secret to solving marital disagreement, she continued, was learning to be good listeners. “You have to hear what the other person is saying and not defend yourself or jump in,”
she said. When a big decision had to be made, the two of them made it together. “We never made a decision unless we both knew it was the right thing to do.” But it was always their faith, they said, that got them through difficult times, including the death
of their son, Jack, in 1971. The couple has three other children. “We have gone through tough times,” she said. “But it has drawn us closer together.” And the love is still clearly there. Taking Jack’s hand, Marjorie says, “We are more in love now than ever.”

12 years in the Tower of London. He was eventually beheaded by Elizabeth’s successor, under a different pretext (attacking Spain with 10 men, yeah, sure), but it was love poetry that started him on the road to ruin. John Donne’s love poetry for the woman he would marry so angered her father that he had Donne thrown in jail on some other pretext, prompting Donne to write despairingly in a letter, “John Donne, Anne Donne, Undone.” And so he was and so they were. His father-in-law blocked Donne’s chances for legal and diplomatic career, which forced Donne to go into the ministry, recruited by the King himself. After Anne died, his love poems, the Holy Sonnets, were written – angrily, imploringly – to God: Take me to you, imprison me, for I, Except you enthrall me, never shall be free, Nor ever chaste, except you ravish me. Little wonder Donne’s torturously conflicted, multipersonality love poems have confused generations of college students and other unfortunates. That was then; this is now, the reader may say. But consider the Nobel laureate Joseph Brodsky. The KGB knocked his door down, and a judge sent him to Siberia – combining the traditional punishments of exile (internal) and incarceration and hard labor – for what? For defiantly being a poet who celebrated the private, personal passions that lie at the heart of love. Reader, stick with

She’s the Amelia Earhart of Greek love poetry. Sure, we have vats and vats of ancient war poetry, epics galore full of violence, treachery and gore. But love poetry? Scraps and shards. Rome was no better. Ovid wrote five books of love poetry, including “Amores” and “The Art of Love.” For having practically invented love poetry for the rest of us in Western Civilization who can’t even read Latin, Ovid was banished, exiled, kicked out of Rome by the great Caesar Augustus. Poor Ovid spent the rest of his life without his wife or household or retirement income. He had to go to the farthest outpost of the Roman Empire, a cold, rheumatic, waste land populated by tribes that took turns burning and looting each other. Ovid there wrote his “Tristia” – his “Sorrow” – and sensibly never wrote another love poem again. At least Ovid’s punishment ended with this death. Not so fortunate were the famous lovers Paolo and Francesca. Paolo courted her in long, languid hours reading love poetry, until they could no longer keep their hands off each other. For their adultery, Paolo and Francesca are eternally blown about in a whirlwind, embraced in the tempest of passion that the poetry of love created in their hearts. Read all about it in the “Inferno” of Dante Alighieri. The English poetry landscape is littered with casualties of love poetry. The court favorite of Queen Elizabeth I, Sir Walter Raleigh, for plying the Queen’s handmaid with love poems and winning her heart, spent

its victims. Shakespeare understood. In “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Hermia is sentenced to die. Why? For falling in love with the man her father says had “bewitched the bosom of my child” with “rhymes ... (and) verses of feigning love.” Her father had chosen another man for her, and so in her rebellious love she either must “die the death” or marry no one and live celibate in a nunnery, according to the precepts of the harsh Athenian law. Of course she becomes a runaway. There it is: the witchcraft, the spells and charms of rhymes and verses. The crime of perpetrating love poetry deserves the maximum sentence the law allows. The reader may protest: Was it not Shakespeare who wrote “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day,” and other lovely sonnets that we quote for Valentine’s Day? But are they harmless? Hardly. Shakespeare had to put his “dark lady” in an identity protection program, no doubt for her own safety. Who she was remains a great mystery. And he left himself open to the slings and arrows of outrageous critics, some of who deny he ever wrote a word. We don’t know if Shakespeare was Shakespeare. The dangers of love poetry came with our earliest Western writing. In Ancient Greece, the great love poet Sappho, what happened to her? No one knows. We don’t know the first thing about her, but her poems are shattered and scattered, so all we have are pithy, breathtaking fragments.

CUPID/From B1 incites riot in the blood, enflames the human breast to commit acts erotic, exotic and chaotic. It poses the body against the body politic. It unsettles the social order, it unfixes the planets from their orbits, it calls up seas to drown the eyes of spurned lovers, it gives its wealth to rich and poor alike in shameless abundance. Where such justice is served, love poetry has brought the sentence of capital punishment upon

candy and flowers this Valentine’s Day. But if you’re one of those hopeless cases for whom only love poetry will do, at least beware what has befallen others: execution, incarceration, enforced celibacy, exile, obscurity, the whirlwind. Identity loss and theft. Financial ruin, a wrecked career. Solitary confinement, forced labor. It makes you think. If you can manage to avoid the worst, you may find the one reward that comes from the poetry of love, which is to say, love. Just that. Love, which (if you can believe the poets) conquers all, including that thief of youth, Time itself: Yet do thy worst, old Time. Despite thy wrong, My love shall in my verse live ever young. (Shakespeare, Sonnet 19) So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee. (Shakespeare, Sonnet 18) Whoever she was, we still read about her. Or him. And we still read old what’s-hisname’s poems. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things, as that old love poem in the good book says, so bear with it, believe with it, hope with it, endure with it. Just be careful how you use it, especially if it comes with candy and flowers. And if it comes with a love poem, quick, shut the door. Professor Bensen, Cupid’s scribe, is a member of Hartwick College’s English Department, teaching, among other subjects, poetry.
