y enduring memory of this night will be looking out at all of you,” said Hartwick College President Margaret Drugovich to the crowd gathered at the “Blue Tie Affair” gala under a tent set up between Golisano and Bresee halls. “All of you who have invested in Hartwick: This is a true reunion of shared experience.” The “Blue Tie” gala may have been the highpoint, but it was one of many Friday-Saturday, May 10-11, a two-day kickoff of the “It’s Personal: The Campaign for Hartwick” fundraising effort that aims to raise $32 million to underwrite scholarships, J-Term expenses, a “campus living room” in the Dewar Union, and the William V. Campbell H’10 Fitness Center. ► 8 a.m., Friday, May 10 It isn’t easy getting students out of bed on a Friday morning, but the best and the brightest came out to present in the first round of the student showcase. (Free coffee and muffins helped turnout.) The oral presentations, performances and posters displayed the collaborative efforts of students and faculty.

Hartwick College President Margaret Drugovich prepares to offer a (non-alcoholic) toast to success after announcing the $32 million goal of the college’s “It’s Personal” fund drive at “A Blue Bash!” luncheon Friday, May 10 – and that $19.2 million has already been raised. She’s holding a bottle of Welch’s sparkling grape juice; her parents, Frank and Mary, grew grapes for that company on their farm in Harpersfield, Ohio, where her mom still lives.
“I came in knowing what I wanted to do,” said Sabrina Jones, who took one of 34 Freedman Prizes for her work with Dr. Kin Ho Chan linking aggression and polyunsaturated fats. “Hartwick

After lunch, dark skies threatened the groundbreaking ceremony for the William V. Campbell H’10 Fitness Center, Drugovich and the other trustees didn’t have to stick their shovels in mud. “It seems that in the last five weeks, all they do is push the dirt from one side to the other! joked Drugovich. Though Campbell wasn’t present, the Intuit chairman of the board prepared a video statement, where he spoke against a digital backdrop of the fitness center concept art. “It is important to name buildings after people, said Drugovich. “Everybody needs to know that good things happen because of good people. Trustees, board members and alumni came out to dig in ceremonial shovels. “When we were students, there was a coffee house for us to gather at, said Debra French, ’80, who is also a parent of a 2009 graduate. “They need a place to call their own. French and her husband, Steven – the two were Hartwick classmates – have a classroom in Golisano named for them. “This

Doelp was one of 32 Hartwick alumni honored Saturday, May 11, on Hartwick’s inaugural “Wall of Distinction ceremony during “It’s Personal: The Campaign for Hartwick Students kick-off weekend, where a $32 million fund-raising drive was announced. Doelp joined three other honorees in sharing stories with students who braved early morning rain to hear them speak on “Making and Managing Change in
the Inevitable Unknown panel. “I know that 9 a.m. on a Saturday isn’t your best hour, said college President Margaret Drugovich. “But you being here tells me everything I need to know. The four panelists – Doelp, David Long, ’83, Liberty Mutual president/ CEO; Cyrus Mehri, ’83, founding partner of the class-action law firm, Mehri & Skalet; and Rob Rowe, a former actor, now Citigroup managing diredtor –shared insights on how to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Though their career paths varied, they all found their path by following their instincts – and a Hartwickacquired penchant for hard work – or in Rowe’s case, climbing the stairs. “I was doing ‘That Scoundrel Scapin’ and I had viral bronchitis with a fever of 104, he said. “I had to walk those stairs up to the health center – it was exhausting,

but I did it. That drive served him in a way he didn’t quite expect. While working as a proofreading temp between acting gigs, he began reading bond agreements and took an interest in the language. “I thought ‘this would be a great way to fund a theatre company’, he said. “I didn’t know it was going to
be the path I took, but I let that inspiration carry me. For Mehri, his instincts and passion drove him to make the world a better place by taking on landmark diversity cases against Texaco and Coca-Cola. “We were able to make transformative change, he said. But listening to others can also be a source of inspiration and creativity. “At Liberty Mutual, we implemented a triangle manage-
ment strategy, said Long. “The people working for us, working with our customers, are the ones on top, and I’m down at the bottom. I joked to them, ‘I’ve worked here 22 years, I just started as CEO and I’m back on the bottom?’ But now I listen more to what our employees need. With increasing globalization, Long says, it’s also important to listen to the cultural needs of overseas
clients. “In Russia, they love the word ‘liberty,’ but they thought our Statue of Liberty logo was political, so we had to change it, he said. “When we make ads about ‘responsibility’ in Latin America, they’d better include images of family and church. Globalization doesn’t just mean ‘We’re here from America and we’re going to tell you what to do’.
