Hofbauer. “We watched our kids grow up and play golf here. It was part of our lives. My husband, Eddie, he thought it was a dumb game, chasing a little white ball – and then even he got hooked. Hofbauer’s daughter, Heidi, now manages a golf course in Florida. “Even as a kid, she could give some of the women a run for their money, said the proud mother. On a good day, a caddy might earn $6 carrying two bags – if the other caddies didn’t toss him in cold Otego Creek or roll him down the hill towards the 18th green by way of “initiation. “We were pretty terrible, he admitted. On Mondays, Grygiel would take the caddies out on the green, give them five balls each and let them practice. “He’d go up and down the line giving us pointers, said Kniskern. “And after we closed for the day, he’d let us go out and a play a round. The clubhouse was built in 1916, and a menu from the early 1930s featured two lobster tails for $1.25, a T-bone steak for 90 cents. Prices went up after World War II, with a whole lobster now $3.25 and a steak for $4. “Can you imagine getting a steak for $4? said Hofbauer. At those prices, no wonder the club was known for dinner dances and ladies’ luncheons. “I remember Dottie Ryan and Peg Seybot coming in gloves and heels, changing into their golf clothes, then showering, changing back and going down to the clubhouse to have lunch – it was very classy. But it wasn’t always a game for the faint of heart. “Tom Greene and George Lambros once got in a fight in the sandtrap, said Drago, “Another time, Ted Williams threw all of his clubs in the creek. “I’m sure some farmer

The club has also turned out a few pros of its own. The current head pro, Matt Schulte, played on the PGA tour, as did his father, Alan. Kevin Burnsworth, Steve Nesbit, Gus and Frank Grygiel also turned pro. “They teach, they play competitively, they run the tournaments here, said Hofbauer. But the green wasn’t just a playground for pros. “It was a family club, said

Golf clubs weren’t the only thing that wound up in the water. “Frank Grygiel would have your name printed on your ball, said Drago. “If you lost a ball, one of the caddies would find it and turn it in for 5 or 10 cents. Then Grygiel would sell it back to you for 15 or 20 cents. Many of those golf balls, as well as photos, videos and menus will be on display as part of the open house on Friday, June 14. And sometimes, a piece of history can still be found in the grass alongside the greens. “One of my golf balls just turned up, said Drago.
