The dance floor of the B-Side is rarely bare, and Saturday, June 15, was no exception. Here, Kathleen Avery, Oneonta, Johanna Loeffler, Cooperstown, Michael Kirusinski, Northfield, Debbie Barnes, Sidney Center, Penny Briggs, East Meredith and Steven McClintock of East Meredith, twist and dance the night away to the sounds of the Deadstring Brothers.
B-Side Latest Spot For Grownups Having Fun B-SIDE/From B1 opened the B-Side Ballroom & Supper Club as an “intimate venue that serves an adult community with craft food, drink and great entertainment.” One of the first things people notice when they walk in, said Rebecca, who was one of SUNY Oneonta’s first music-industry majors, is that the bar doesn’t have a TV. “We took a lot of heat for that,” she said. “It was a real risk.” But there was a reason. “We didn’t want to compete with our neighbors,” said Wayne. “If you want to watch a game, you can go to the Copper Fox. No one bar fulfils all those needs, but a rising tide raises all ships.” The B-Side’s specialty, in addition to locally sourced food and local beers, is bringing nationally touring artists to the stage. Saturday, June 15, they were one of 19 official venues (one
of only two in New York) for the Waylon Jennings Birthday Bash, a fundraiser for the Waylon Fund for Diabetes Research. “JD, the bassist for the Deadstring Brothers, used to do this fundraiser at a bar in his hometown (in Michigan),” said Wayne. “He wanted to bring it here.” But more than just a great night of music, the party had a personal meaning to the couple. “Our son Aben is a Type 1 diabetic,” said Rebecca. “We were able to send $1,000 to the Waylon Fund, and they’re finding things every day to make a diabetic’s life healthier.” As former professional touring musicians themselves, Wayne and Rebecca
understand the venue from a musician’s point of view. “I’ve been on that other end, when the sound is bad and the owner isn’t very nice,” said Wayne. “These bands open for big tours, then they play here and they enjoy the warmth, the intimacy, and they take that back to their hometowns with them. The best compliment they can give is to say, ‘when can we book our next show’?” The B-Side is also beginning to plan an “Artist Exchange,” where musicians can come to Oneonta and perform, give workshops and teach about their craft, with hopes to send a musician from Oneonta to musical collectives throughout the country. “We want these
artists to go down to Louisiana, to Michigan, to learn from other artists. It puts us Oneonta on the musical map.” But the B-Side isn’t content with just musical acts. The venue hosted the Greater Oneonta Historical Society’s antique wedding dress show in May, and the owners have been approached for poetry readings, comedy shows, small theater productions and even a “Burlesque for Breast Cancer” benefit. “We believe in this community,” said Wayne. “And we believe that in five years, Oneonta will be a destination. We wanted to stick a stake in the ground and be part of that.”
