ill Gibson got a call the other week from a woman in New York City. She owns farmland in Otsego County, and wanted to do an “organic something on it. Bill didn’t have an immediate idea for her, and suggested she focus her thoughts in a mission statement. A few days later, the phone rang

Experiences like this one have convinced Bill the answer is an emphatic: No! Cooperstown Holstein’s Record Of Innovations Makes Farm A Model FARM/From B1 into agriculture, including Donald; the other two went into education, including David, who rose to SUNY Alfred president.) In 1964, Peter bought four farms on either side of the Susquehanna River in the vicinity of The Meadows, the former county nursing home. Soon, he had installed one of the first milking parlors in the state for his 150 Holsteins. (“Can you imagine milking your cow standing up?” was part of the original pitch.) Jennifer’s father and his wife Evelyn soon had five daughters, who today are pursuing professions as far away as Georgia and Colorado. “He went from a household of men to a household of women,” said the daughter. Only Jennifer – she and her partner, Eric Watson,

have a daughter, Molly, 15, who they are home-schooling – went into farming. “It’s not just a job. You have to love working outside. I love working with animals,” she said. Since joining her father in 1989, the innovations have continued. The farm is CAFO (comprehensive animal feed operations) cer-

tified, storing and spreading manure according to U.S. Clean Water Act specifications. The Huntingtons were early participants in EQIP, the USDA’s Environmental Quality Incentives Program, using an anerobic digester to create methane which, for a period, they sold to the county to heat The Meadows.

VITAL/From B1 agent, going from farm to farm, offering “information and education,” the service’s traditional role. “The task goes on,” he concluded as – on Tuesday, June 4 – he completed a census he’s been conducting of all agricultural operations in Otsego County. “I go to a farm that’s been here 30 years, and they still have needs.” Gibson took on his self-defined mission after seeing the county’s budget allocation to Cooperative Extension drop in the past half-decade from more than $200,000 to $175,000 to $125,000. “There was a proposal to go even deeper.” He believes what he’s found – 160 dairy farms, 583 farming enterprises in all – add up to a powerful case for continued support of Cooperative Extension. He thinks county representatives will agree when con-

versations on the 2013-14 budget begin later this year. As it happened, he planned to address the county board at its June meeting on the 5th, announcing that the parade that launches this year’s Otsego County Fair July 30 in Morris will include 14 floats, each featuring farm produce from one of the 14 county reps’ districts. There are two arguments against further support of Cooperative Extension. The first is that, with the Internet, farmers can Google whatever information they may need. Gibson said his experience over the past three months – like the anecdote at the start of this article – shows that’s not the case. The second is that farming is in retreat. Gibson’s boots-on-the-ground count – he completed it at 9 a.m. Tuesday, June 4, at a meeting with Pittsfield Town Su-

pervisor Doug Lum – shows agriculture is vigorous, although somewhat different that it has been in the past. For instance, Gibson identified 160 dairy farms in the county’s 24 towns, compare to more than 1,000 at the peak in the early 1960s. “Ninety percent of our gross product is still from dairy farms,” he said. “That’s $50 million – $60 million by today’s prices.” In all, however, he discovered 583 farming enterprises, many of them novel, many of them promising. There’s garlic, and eggs, and honey, and goat cheese, and flowers, and elk, and grapes, and apple cider, and maple syrup – 25 products in all. And there are problems to be solved – minimizing manure spills and feed storage runoff, for instance. Gibson found an emergency-preparedness gap, and with Kevin Ritton, the county’s emergency services

Carly joins Jennifer Huntington as she inspects Cooperstown Holstein’s silage-storage area. Good practices kept the farm well-supplied throughout last year’s dry summer.

The farm rotates soy bean and corn crops to optimize nutrition to its herd. Using a press from China, the soy-bean oil is extracted and mixed with diesel for onroad and off-road vehicles. The husks are rolled into Frito-like chips for feed. The outdoor silage-storage area is huge. Last year was “very, very dry,” but Cooperstown Holstein had enough silage to sell to other farms in need. With the demand of New York State’s burgeoning Greek yogurt business life is good: Milk is in demand and prices are up. “We’re being asked to milk as many cows as we can,” Huntington said. Chobani offers even greater opportunities, if dairy farmers break the grip of a couple of coops that “rule” the flow to the yogurt plant in South Edmeston.

Right now, farmers are paid $1.13 per hundredweight (CWT) of milk, which includes 40 cents for hauling. With Cooperstown Holstein producing 7 million CWT annually, you can see that if local shipping can halve the hauling fee, that

Gibson Finds Farming Community Changing, But Vital coordinator, came up with a clearly marked CV pipe that can be placed in a visible spot every farm that contains a map identifying all possible hazards if firefighters are called to the scene. And there are opportunities. Is hydroponic forage possible? Is that really an alfalfa weevil attacking my crop? Gibson explored the questions. Did you know Koreans drink maple syrup straight? A New York City restaurateur asked Gibson to help find him a supply. “There’s a whole wide spectrum of need and interest out there,” Gibson said.
