Shop Locally With Success On Southside GIFTS/From B1 If you’ve still got room on your tree, Wendy Nirschl brings her hand-painted wooden ornaments out of Etsy and into her Southside Mall kiosk, outside Radio Shack. “The cats and the cosmos are new designs this year,” said Tori Rifanburg, who was manning the booth on Sunday, Dec. 14. “I love this one of the cats decorating the tree, because that’s what they do – you put all the ornaments on, and they ‘redecorate’ while you’re gone.” Tori also had her line of jewelry out, all made from vintage beads. “I love finding weird buttons and beads and finding new ways to use them!” she said. “It adds a personal touch.” Like Tori, Jamie Wagner at Maurice’s knows all about sparkle and glam. “Statement jewelry is huge this season,” she said. “If you’re wearing just a simple shirt, a big necklace pulls your whole outfit together.” Maybe it’s a little early for me to be thinking about New Year’s Eve, but all the sparkly, glittery outfits they had on the mannequins made me plan right past Christmas! “You take one of these silver glittery tanks, pair it with a jacket and heels, and you’ve got your party look,” she said. “It’s super easy.” But maybe the guys in my family wouldn’t be interested in a gem-cluttered clutch, so it’s over to FYE. “We’ve got our toys in for the holidays,” said manager Zach Dann. “We’ve got blankets, ornaments and hats for ’The Walking Dead,’ ‘Breaking Bad,’ and especially ‘Dr. Who.’ We had a ‘Dr. Who’ toothbrush, but we sold out of it.” Not sure I need a Dalek ornament on my tree or a zombie blanket on my couch, but I know plenty of people who do. And don’t forget your furry family members. “We’ve got coats and sweaters, and plenty of toys!” said Petco manager Dennis Powell. “Laser lights are really popular – cats love them, but so do dogs, birds, even fish will chase them.” And if you don’t have a fluffy friend, Petco can help with that too, cooperating with local adoption agencies to help shelter pets find good homes. Can I get this tabby cat gift-wrapped, please?

CFA Funds Market Survey For D&H Rail Yards
RAIL YARDS/From A1 of the county IDA, after the governor announced this year’s awards Thursday, Dec. 11. The county IDA – the Industrial Development Authority – plans to move forward on a proposal from Clark Patterson Lee, a consulting firm with offices in Albany and Rochester, to prepare an ec-dev plan for the rail yards, Mathes said. The governor’s announcement underwrote three other IDA “consolidated funding applications” (CFAs) for state ec-dev funding: • $400,000 for Springbrook to renovate 10 group homes throughout the region where the school’s specialneeds students live.
• $200,000 for a county Agricultural Microenterprise Program, which, in collaboration with CADE (the Center for Agricultural Development & Entrepreneurship, on Elm Street), will train 10 farmers to market products to the New York metropolitan area. • $58,000 for Cooperstown’s update of its comprehensive master plan and a strategy for development, led by Elan Planning, which was involved in the revival of Saratoga Springs and other Upstate communities. This is in addition to $2 million in CDBG (Community Development Block Grant) money the governor awarded to the county on Dec. 4, including $200,000 to train 80 people at the IDA’s new Susquehanna Regional
Center for Growth on the fifth floor of 189 Main. While the D&H funding was appreciated, Mathes expressed disappointment that other IDA projects – the Upper Susquehanna Regional Ag Center at Chestnut and Market and a commerce park in Richfield Springs, in particular – weren’t chosen as well. “We’re going to advance both those projects on our own with IDA funding,” said Mathes, who was brought aboard last January to lead a threeyear, $3 million IDA effort to improve the county’s economy. By “working harder, strengthening our projects,” he said, the IDA hopes to have better success next year.
More Flexible TASC Replaces Familiar GED DIPLOMA/From B1 sessing Secondary Completion (TASC) to get their High School Equivalency (HSE) certificate. “We were both servicing the same area, so it didn’t make sense to compete for students,” said Lishansky. “By collaborating, we’ve
become more efficient.” The TASC replaces the more familiar GED, which New York State stopped using last January. Students must pass all five sections – math, science, social studies, reading and writing – to earn the HSE, but they don’t have to pass them all
at once. “The test is offered five or six times a year,” said Lishansky. “There’s no set time you have to complete the program by.” All learning is tailored to the student’s individual needs, so when a student comes into the classroom, Lishansky, Jim Cimko or one of the other teachers will sit down and work with them. “We assess what their needs are, if they need ESL (English as a Second Language) help, and we go from there,” said Lishansky. “Working one on one helps build for success.” Gary Grant, Oneonta, one of the students taking the test next week, was inspired by his daughter’s graduation to go back to school. “I dropped out in my senior year,” he said. “I want to finish up my degree and move back home to Miami.” Having the program connected with BOCES also means that students can take any of BOCES vocational programs – nursing, cosmetology and automotive, for instance – for free. “The vocational training is a huge piece,” said Lishansky. “Our students go on to run successful businesses.” The program’s flexible hours and scheduling – students can come in whenever they want – helps make it easy for students to fit school back into their schedule. “Adults have other responsibilities than teenagers do,” he said. “They have jobs, families, but they make the effort to come here.” “I dropped out because I got pregnant,” said Michelle Cash, Oneonta. “I’m a noon-hour aid, but want to work more with the kids, so I need to get my degree.” The busy mom even brings her newest baby, Carter, to classes with her a few times a week.

Help For Downtown Mounts Up DOWNTOWN/From A1 Market Street, preparing the way for future development. • Also in the statewide CDBG announcement was $400,000 for “streetscape” needs along Main Street, one block north of Market. Last year in the CFA process, City Hall received $75,000 for a market study of Main Street. “I would like to tie that downtown money with money we just got,” given that the success of Main and Market are interrelated, he said. The “entertainment
district” idea was developed by the late Mayor Dick Miller, to include a “boutique” hotel with a brewerythemed restaurant on vacant land between Stella Luna and Foothills Performing Arts Center. The market survey will explore how that might relate to Foothills, the Clarion and redevelopment of underused buildings along market, such at the former Ford dealership Chestnut and Market. The future of the parking deck also needs to be explored, he said.

heritage, and maintained the family tree back to a Revolutionary War veteran, Col. Hugh Davidson. Loren’s greatest adventure was his life with E.T.A. Davidson, a professor of literature, whom he married on Christmas Eve 1957 in Key West, Fla. On Christmas Day, they continued a year-long quest to interview American authors with a knock on Hemingway’s door in Havana, Cuba. He defended his wife
and daughter Tina from an attack by nomads in Turkey. His next two children, Eva and Scott were born in Istanbul, where he taught at the American College for Girls, part of Robert College. Later, his wife, son Scott and his last two children, Lâle and Loren Jr., joined him on his Fulbright Scholarship to Santiago, Chile. Together they embarked on one of many family car camping trips, a 12,000 mile journey home
to New York State. Above all, Loren was deeply committed to the customs and artifacts of another time. He was a passionate reader of history, literature and travelogues, but his strongest belief was in the oral tradition. His family of grandchildren, nephews and nieces and first, second and third cousins valued his perception, photography and family lore. He is survived by his wife, E.T.A. Davidson and
children Tina Davidson, Eva Davidson and her husband Larry Malone, Scott Davidson and his wife Lily Ji, Lâle Davidson and her husband Charles Brown, and Loren Davidson and his wife, Susan Penevolpe, as well as grandchildren, two sisters and a sister-in-law, and nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at later time. Arrangements are with the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home.
