Many Years, Many Changes STEVENS/From B1 non & Guildersleeve, then located in “The Opera Block” -- Bassett Healthcare is there now, at Chestnut and Main -- in 1883. It’s been almost 130

years. John O. Stevens, 94, Francine’s dad and T. Waldo’s grandson, injured a hip a few months ago and is recuperating at Chestnut Park & Rehabilitation Nursing Center on the West End.

The store has gone through, not just four generations, but many incarnations: • In 1887, T. Waldo bought out the partner in Lannon & Stevens, and joined Charles E. Hill in Stevens & Hill on lower

Chestnut Street in the future (now former) Jack’s Restaurant. • In 1893, the Stevens & Hill Block at 153 Main St., where the store still is today, was completed, and the hardware store moved in (after a short interim stop

in the Hazelton Block). The store stretched from Main to Wall, and required the city to abandon a piece of that alley that paralleled the two streets. • In 1915, C. Frank Stevens, T. Waldo’s son, bought an interest in the business,

which had been reincorporated in 1912 (after Hills’ retirement) as Stevens Hardware. • In 1937, during the Depression, Stevens leased the Main Street storefront to H. Phipps Auto Stores, which sold Studebakers, and moved the hardware store entrance to 2 Wall St. • In 1939, the founder died, his son Frank became president, and grandson John became a director. • In 1942, the Phipps lease expired and Stevens again occupied the full building. John, a bomber pilot during World War II who escaped from a POW camp after crash landing in Switzerland, returned home and took over the business in 1947; his father passed away the following year. One of the best sources on the store is a newspaper interview T. Waldo Stevens gave in 1933 on the store’s 50th anniversary; even then, it was already the oldest store downtown. And he captured the nature of business -- to survive and prosper requires change. “The Victrola department,” he declared, “was one of our most profitable ventures for a number of years. But in about 24 months it was practically killed by the radio, which took its place in our business.” At one point, he said, he stocked 75,000 items. Please See STEVENS, B3

STEVENS/From B2 When Stevens bought his store in 1883, only 250 gallons of gasoline, “for cleaning and lighting, had been sold in Oneonta the year before. In 1932, 8.5 million gallons of gasoline were sold in the city, he said. As cars pushed out the horse, Stevens went into autos and auto accessories, but that became “so vast he had to choose: Cars or hardware. “It was only natural that I chose to remain with my first Photos courtesy Francine Stevens Bailey line, he said. For five years, beginning in 1937, Stevens leased the Main Street side of Active in his business, T. the store to a Studebaker dealer, and moved its main entrance to 2 Wall Waldo was also active in civSt., the back of the building; the lease expired in 1942 and the hardware ic life. He was village presistore expanded back in to the whole structure at 153 Main. In the 1950s, dent in 1888-89, and during outboard motors entered the offerings, and John O. Stevens’ son-in-law, Bob Bailey, remembers the elder man saying, “If you pull it more than three that time built “The Chinese times, it’s not right, whether it’s a snowmobile or an outdoor motor, and Wall, a huge undertaking he would insist it be repaired. that widened Chestnut Street on that straight-away on the other side of Walgreen’s. As president of the Merchants’ Association in 1906, he proposed that Oneonta become a city in his address to the annual banquet. The next year, Frank H. Bresee, who succeeded Stevens, appointed a committee that led to the city’s creation in 1908. Back from the war and in business, John Stevens built a home on Goodyear Lake, where Francine, an avid water skiier, and her two brothers, Jeff and Joe, were raised. Young Francine wasn’t allowed to come to downtown Oneonta too often, and isn’t sure why. When her dad’s second wife passed away 25 years ago, she asked Francine to take care of her father, and the daughter has worked with him ever since. Over that period, the store shifted from hardware to her father’s first love, hunting, fishing and camping. Across from the moosehead is a birch-bark canoe. On a trip into the wilds of Canada in the mid-1930s, John ordered four of them from a Native American craftsman. He picked them up when he came out of the woods a couple of weeks later. Each was made from a single birch, Bob Bailey recounted. And once a year they had to be submerged in water so the bark could expand, making the crafts water-tight once again. The stock was thinning out, but the Baileys were considering auctioning off the display cases and other accoutrements.

3-Plan a safe route so parents know where their older kids will be at all times. Set a time for their return home. Make sure that your child is old enough and responsible enough to go out by themselves. Make sure that they have a cell phone. 4-Let your children know not to cut through back alleys and fields if they are out alone. Make sure they know to stay in populated areas and not to go off the beaten track. Let them know to stay in well lighted areas with lots of people around. Explain to them why it can be dangerous for kids not to do this. If they are going out alone,

5-Instruct your children not to eat any treats until they bring them home to be examined by you. This way you can check for any problem candy and get the pick of the best stuff!

6-Instruct your child to never go into the home of a stranger or get into their car. Explain why this is not a god idea and what to do if someone approaches them and tries to talk to them. 7-Make sure your child carries a flashlight, glow stick or has reflective tape on their costume to make them more visible to cars. 8-Let them know that they should stay together as a group if going out to Trick or Treat without an adult.

2-Some towns set a curfew for trick or treating which makes it easier for townsfolk to know who’s coming to their door. Make sure and stick to the curfew times and stick to subdivisions and areas with a lot of homes so your kids can get in as much trick or treating as possible in a few hours time.

Trick-or-Treating

1-Children should always go out trick or treating accompanied by a responsible adult. If you have a group of kids going, the parents should choose 2 or 3 of them to go along and keep an eye on things.
