COOPERSTOWN t came off seamlessly. May 28-30, 1983, the leaders of the world’s seven richest democracies – the so-called G7 – sipped coffee in each others’ Colonial-era parlors or chatted over picket fences between their backyards. France’s Mitterrand, Germany’s Kohl, Canada’s Trudeau, the U.K.’s formidable Margaret Thatcher, Italy’s Fanfani, Japan’s Nakasone tackled the world’s toughest issues in the

world’s most convivial atmosphere. Yes, it all came off seamlessly, and the gathering’s benign host, Ronald Reagan, got all the credit. Yet, if preparation is the key to spontaneity, the man who perhaps deserved the most credit stayed modestly in the background. He was James C. Miles, then a top executive at Colonial Williamsburg, who Oct. 1 joined The Otesaga as incoming general manager. “It was one of the greatest experiences of my career,” the 40-year hotelier reflected in an interview a few days after arriving to take charge of the 103-year-old resort hotel on Otsego Lake. He and the retiring GM, John Irvin (who

had a sterling career of his own) – they’ve known each other for years – will be working in tandem through Thanksgiving, the end of the 2012 season. As a boy growing up in South Portland, Maine, Miles had also considered becoming a professional musician or lawyer, but listening to his enthusiastic recounting of his years managing top resorts, the career he did choose seems inevitable. It started modestly enough, washing dishes at a Howard Johnson’s in his hometown during that chain’s heyday, (while playing drums with a local jazz combo – “My mother would wait Please See MILES, B8

20th Anniversary Adult-Learning Classes Announced Oct. 21 CCAL/From B1 us, said Sandee Fleisher, CCAL president. “We’re starting our 20th season. It all started on a fluke and succeeded. On Sunday, Oct. 21, CCAL will be having their annual meeting at Morris Hall, during which they’ll

celebrate their anniversary, say goodbye to retiring office manager Justine Butler and unveil their Jan.-May 2013 session catalogue, featuring 35 brand-new classes. For an annual membership fee of $120, members can take as many of the nearly 50 classes, lectures

and trips offered each session, ranging from craft and art workshops to travelogues, history lessons and music courses. “It’s the bargain of the year, said Alice Cannistra, co-chair of the Public Relations Committee. “Nothing overlaps, so someone could take 80 classes a

year, schedule-wise. And the facilitators volunteer their time and their passions to teach these courses. “We call them facilitators instead of teachers because they facilitating fascinating discussions, added Suzanne Brown, fellow PR co-chair. “And we get other classes

because sometimes the teachers don’t finish! joked Sandee. “We don’t pay, but their compensation is a roomful of lifelong learners who are interested in what they’re teaching. Fran also taught classes, including counting crossstitch, a three-part session on wrapping gifts, folding napkins and tying scarves, and sharing some of her own travelogues from Russia, Japan, China and the Great Parks out west. In July, she traveled with Jay Fleisher and 25 other CCAL students ( a group she described as “one 16year-old and 24 grandmothers) to Iceland after attending one of his travelogues. “A group of us all said, ‘So, when are we going?’ she said. “I was a late bloomer on travel, so I advise everyone else to start early. The courses, which are based on the Elder Hostel model aimed at helping people 55+ socialize, are mostly held during the day so students don’t have to drive in the dark. “When you’re retired, it’s exciting to be able to study things outside your career, with no pressures or tests, said Sandee. Though the CCAL isn’t affiliated with the colleges, SUNY Oneonta grants members parking permits and access to both the gym

And, in addition to her quilting project, Fran still has three more sessions to go – Hugh MacDougall’s lecture on the Norse Vinelands, Robert Loomis’ talk on the Loomis Gang and Diana Friedell’s Guided Mediation. “That should keep me busy until November, she said. “Getting a little bit of this, a little bit of that – that’s what it’s about.

40 Years At Pinnacle Of Hotel Business

MILES/From B1 up for me; I wasn’t even old enough to drive.” The Ho-Jo’s owner, Frank Adam, saw something in the new dishwasher, and soon he was short-order cook, then bartender, server and host. “He treated me like a son,” Miles remembers. So when it was time for college, he set the course he would follow for decades to come: He entered the University of New Hampshire’s Hotel Administration program, which – happily, it turned out – required summer internships in the field. The resource at the time – the late 1960s – was “The Red Book,” a directory of all hotels and resorts in the U.S., and that first summer, it helped Miles land a position with the Yellowstone Park Co. as assistant location manager – the #2 job – at Fishing Bridge, one of the in-park lodgings. That May, the lad from Maine flew to Minneapolis,

transferred onto a flight to Bozeman, Mont., hopped a bus to Livingston, Mont., and arrived to find snow still on the ground. Most of the people working for him were his age; the department heads he was directing were in their 50s. It worked out so well, he went back next year as location manager, a job he describes as a combination of boss, counselor and confessor. In one harrowing episode, an employee went missing in bear-laden Hayden Valley. The anxious 21-year-old supervisor thought to himself, “I’m going to have to call this girl’s parents.” Happily, she was discovered up a tree, not with a bear but a boy. When graduation came around, a proud Frank Adam welcomed his protege back to the South Portland HoJo’s: as general manager. Adam was then developing cineplexes around Portsmouth, N.H., and Miles

was on his own. Oversight amounted to sharing “a cup of coffee in the a.m. and a bowl of cereal at 11 at night,” he remembers. “He had enough confidence in me to let me run it.” Two intense years of hiring, training, prioritizing, marketing and revenue generation followed. But the young man was ambitious and, through happenstance – an acquaintance ran into a Colonial Williamsburg vice president vacationing at the Spruce Point Inn, a resort in Boothbay Harbor – he was invited up for an interview. Expecting a job offer, he called a UNH professor for advice and was told: “If they offer you a job as a bus boy, take it!” Twenty-three exciting years with Colonial Williamsburg Hotel Properties Inc. followed as Miles rose through the ranks, from resident manager to general manager, to vice president and general manager, to – for

the last eight years – executive vice president for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, overseeing 1,700 employees, four hotels with 1,100 guestrooms, 13 restaurants, three golf courses, plus related recreational activities. During those years, Colonial Williamsburg – the living-history museum containing multiple buildings dating back to 1699 was founded by John D. Rockefeller – was the decompression spot for visiting heads of state from around the world, where they caught up on their jet lag while preparing to confer with the President and other D.C. decisionmakers. The G7 challenge was daunting: Interfacing with Reagan confidante Michael Deaver; overseeing interior renovations of seven Colonial cottages into luxury lodgings, complete with kitchens; lining up Wolfgang Puck, Paul Prudhomme, Craig Claiborne and other celebrity chefs and ensuring

a smooth working relationships with in-house staff. “It was elegant” – that was the goal, Miles said. “But it was elegantly casual.” If the world came to Colonial Williamsburg – Emperor Hirohito’s first visit to the U.S. in 1975 was another visit Miles oversaw – so did Americans. “It was a time

when generation after generation came to Williamsburg,” and Miles’ negotiated the deal with Anheuser-Busch to build a Busch Gardens nearby, enhancing the draw for the modern American family. Notable from a personal perspective, Miles – still in his 20s – hired a parttime clerk/typist/payroll clerk, a student at the nearby College of William & Mary. It turned out he hired his future wife, Karen. The couple has two children, Emily, now 27, a Gettysburg College grad who is student activity officer at William & Mary, and Barrett, 24, a University of Richmond graduate now an analyst at Private Advisors LLC, pursuing a career in finance. In the 1990s, Miles was lured away from Williamsburg to Robert Davis’ innovative Seaside, Fla., secondhome community, juggernaut for the “New Urbanism” which spawned such communities as Disney’s Celebration, Fla. Jim Carrey’s “The Truman Show” was filmed at Seaside, depicting it as a too-perfect American small town. After a year as COO there, Miles was recruited away by the Hershey Entertainment & Resort Co., and for the next 13 years was again balancing many of the same elements as in Williamsburg – history, entertainment, topend lodging – in a period of unprecedented expansion in Chocolate Town, USA. In his role as vice president, he oversaw a doubling of the 665-room Hershey Lodge and construction of a 15,000-square-foot spa (then doubled it too). He bought back the Hershey Country Club and clubhouse, grew it to 63 holes, and added two more clubhouses. He oversaw a $70 million expansion that included an eight-cottage complex designed for high-end conferences. Miles had recently become CEO at Peddler’s Village, 70 specialty shops and six restaurants built around the luxury, 71-room Golden Plough Inn near New Hope, Pa., when the call came: The Otesaga was looking for a general manager. Irvin and wife Nancy had known Jim and Karen for 20 years, and Miles also knew Frank Maloney, the previous Otesaga GM. Irvin was enthusiastic about the younger executive; among other affinities, both had roots in Williamsburg. Jane Forbes Clark, Leatherstocking Corp. president, announced the selection in August. Miles looks every inch the top hotel executive, fit, alert, energetic, suited, silver-haired, seemingly ready to spring into action at a moment’s notice. As did Irvin, he cites attention to detail – “It’s all about details: A lot of little things can become big things” – as a key to success, plus dedication, a sense of humor, patience, compassion – “as well as passion” – among the qualities that make a successful hotelier. “You have to listen to the guests; they’ll tell you what they want,” he said. In a way, the Cooperstown challenge – Miles is also GM of The Cooper Inn – is in synch with his experience. He quotes John D. Rockefeller on Williamsburg’s mission, “that the future may learn from the past.” “The Otesaga is the grand dame – one of the few remaining of its kind,” said Miles. “The Otesaga has a wonderful history, combining tradition and luxury – and yet we stay current. We aren’t living in the past.” And, by the way, he’s a Red Sox fan.
