as to whether or not we could prosecute here in New York,” said the D.A. “And I believe that Mr. Callahan had the intent to kill her while in Otsego County” – sufficient for local jurisdiction – “and drove her to that place to be killed.” Muehl’s workload got busy, and the case again went cold. But last year, he hired Investigator Mike Ten Eyck, the retired sheriff’s investigator. Then in March, a woman called out of the blue saying that her brother had been killed in Pennsylvania. “It brought Lizzy’s case back to mind,” he said. “I dug up the file, and Mike investigated.” They brought the evidence to the grand jury on June 25, and it handed down the murder charge. Callahan is currently serving 12 1/2 years at the Attica Correctional Facility, west of Batavia, for a 2013 conviction on criminal sexual act in the first degree. He was brought to Cooperstown on the 27th, arraigned before County Judge John F. Lambert, and remanded back to Attica without bail. “It was awful to see him in court,” said sister Maria Valentine, who raised Lizzy’s son Connor. “I didn’t think I’d ever have to see his face again. It brought me right back to the night Lizzy left. I’ll never forget that night.” Callahan is scheduled to return to the Otsego County Court on July 26. If convicted of the class A-1 felony, Callahan faces 25 years to life in prison. “I never thought this day would come,” said Valentine. “He thought he could get away with it. And I thought he would too.” “This is a long time coming,” said Wickham.

A-4 THE FREEMAN’S JOURNAL EDITORIAL
With Northern Eagle Opening, Promising Future More Concrete Cooperstown Mayor Jeff Katz observed the other day that, between the 22-room hotel proposed for Railroad Avenue and CVS’ plans for a new pharmacy at the southern gateway, $5 million in new investment in the village is suddenly a possibility. “Any time people want to put money into the village on a business level, that’s good,” he said. You often hear it said around Otsego County that, when a recession hits nationally, we don’t feel it for two years. When the recession ends nationwide, it also takes a couple of years to arrive in Upstate New York. Given the scope of the Great Recession of 2008, the comeback may have taken a little longer, but all of a sudden there’s a lot of economic action in these parts. • That was emphasized at the monthly meeting June 22 of Otsego Now, always content rich, but, it seemed, even moreso. A central topic was which CFAs to submit this time around. (CFAs are “comprehensive funding applications,” the main way the Cuomo Administration distributes more than a half-billion in economicdevelopment funding Upstate annually). This month’s eye-opening idea was construction to “wrap-around” the Foothills Performing Arts Cen-

ter, allowing it to accommodate the Oneonta Family Y as well in an arts-recreation center. Coming out of an eight-year economic slump, both organizations – and many others countywide – are looking to collaborate, “collaboration” being the “open sesame” to the CFA tap. So the executive directors of each – Foothills’ Bill Youngs and the Y’s Frank Russo – were intrigued or better about the possibilities; both used the word “exciting.” (Russo said he first heard
the idea mentioned by county Rep. Craig Gelbsman, R-Oneonta, a year ago. Join the idea with the IDA’s new energy, and presto! Perhaps, anyhow.) The Foothills-Y CFA is one of four Otsego Now may seek to jumpstart the “food hub” – gateway to “The Finger Lakes of Beer” – along the city’s Market Street. Another would build the actual “hub” in the old Oneonta Ford building. Another would build shops, apartments and a “transit
center/tourist center” around and above the existing parking deck. (A private company, KCG Development of Indianapolis, has expressed interesting in getting involved, a huge development.) Yet another CFA would go toward a boutique hotel between Foothills and Stella Luna, which would be reimagined on a beerpub theme. Here’s the beauty of the Foothills-Y piece: It would provide a fitness center and convention component; that collaboration would make the boutique hotel’s financing just that much more attractive. • This is the kind of smart thinking that has allowed Otsego Now to move forward projects with many moving parts. The entity’s CEO, Sandy Mathes, reported to his directors that, as is typical as transitions loom, the Obama Administration is eager to push as much money out the door for programs it supports by year’s end. That’s good news for reviving the D&H railyards, where $18 million in federal money is being sought to connect the 88 acres (and more) with I-88, so big trucks won’t have to ply city streets. U.S. Sens. Schumer and Gilli-
brand’s key staffers were very enthusiastic when Mathes and Aaron MacLeod, director of Hartwick College’s Center for Craft Food & Beverage, flew down to D.C. the other day to brief them. Fingers crossed. • That all this is not just smoke-blowing was made eminently clear Saturday, June 25, when more than 500 people fled temperatures near 90 outside to tour Northern Eagle Beverages’ new 62,000-square-foot warehouse next to the former Soccer Hall of Fame. It’s happening. Cooperstown Brewing Co.’s new brewery will rise there in 2018, and both initiatives are associated with Hager Hops’ largesthop-yard-in-the-state in Pierstown. (Paterfamilias Lou Hager Sr. and his children are the glue holding all this together.) Yes, a new economy built around tourism, good beer, healthy foods and light manufacturing is starting to happen. With cynicism and skepticism hunched like vultures on yon branch, it’s ever more important to energetically stay the course. Only results will drive those threatening birds away. We’re on an arc that bends toward prosperity. Yes, let’s stay the course.

To the Editor: What is the common thread that runs through almost all of the aggression, violence, destruction and death, on the entire planet, throughout all of human history? No idea? No clue? Give up? Human males. Males are responsible for almost all of the aggression, violence, destruction and death throughout all of human history. And it continues to this very day. Not all males are violent, destructive and deadly, but almost all of the human caused violence, destruction and death in the world has been, and still is, being caused by males. What makes males, as a

gender, as a group, so aggressive, so dangerous, so violent, so destructive, and so deadly? What makes males think that they are entitled to run
the world, or other people’s lives, and that anyone in their way can be possibly injured or killed? Is it because there is no one to hold them accountable? Is it because defending their distorted views of themselves and their place in the world, and the rightness of whatever happens to be in their heads at the time, is more important than not hurting or killing people? All of the wars in the world have been started and fought by males. All of the armed forces on the planet are in place for males to fight males. All of the genocides in the world have been caused and carried out by males. All of the assault rifle massacres have been carried
out by males. The World Trade Center was attacked by males. Death by husband or boyfriend is a leading cause of death for women. Forty million people are currently displaced in the world today due to male violence and armed conflict. Males cannot solve the problem of achieving world peace because males are the problem preventing world peace. They want endless conflict so they can feel somewhat “normal” and justify the hollow shell that contains their damage, their ignorance, their primitive, aggressive, violent tendencies left over from the Stone Age. From New Orleans – A gentleman who left New Orleans on the 13th ult. and arrived at Boston in the brig Jane, states that the crevasse in the levee had not been stopped. Commodore Patterson had proceeded to the spot with his hulks for the purpose of sinking in the crevasse, but nothing had been affected when the Jane sailed. It was believed that one thousand houses were surrounded with water; and that twothirds of their occupants had been obliged to abandon them. It is an astonishing fact, that amidst all this calamity and distress, the Theatre is regularly opened and thronged. June 27, 1816

A baseball game at Cooperstown between picked teams from the National and American Leagues is entirely within the realm of possibility if suitable grounds can be provided according to a statement made by President Tener of the National League to a representative of The Freeman’s Journal on Thursday last. Hop Picking – The old practice of picking hops has been a system of great inequality to the industrious working classes who harvest the crop – the employer furnishing house and board alike to the slothful and indolent picker and to the ambitious and energetic, both receiving the same sum per bushel or box. Now it is evident to all who have been consulted on this point, that some change should be made which the smart and ambitious picker should enjoy the fruits of her labor. The plan suggested is that the hop-grower furnish to each picker board by the week or day at a given price, and then pay the picker such a price per box as would

The first English-speaking church west of the Hudson River will celebrate the 250th anniversary of its founding at Cherry Valley on July 14. The little church that started as a log cabin and school on Willow Hill in a settlement known as Lindsay’s Bush (later Cherry Valley) was born in the wilderness and has survived massacres, wars, and economic depression. The small group of Scottish-Irish settlers came to Cherry Valley in 1740. The church was established in 1741 and led by the Rev. Samuel Dunlop. July 3, 1991

What’s The Problem? Men! DEAN/From A4 of more women, at every level, of every government, in every country in the world. So what are the responses to be expected from males? Are they going to honestly reflect on and rethink the damage they have collectively done, and are doing around the world every day? Or are they going to pile up the rocks in front of their caves, and start in with their excuses, in their smug, complete, self-righteous ignorance, of how to live peacefully in the world? Someone once said “if was not for the civilizing effect of woman on men, that half of the men in the world would still be living in caves, and the other half would be dead.” Who has ever locked a door, built a bomber, or was afraid to walk down any street, in any country, in the middle of the night, for fear of being attacked by a woman? “Better than a thousand offerings, is one moment’s reverence, for the man who has conquered himself.” Buddha. Warehouse Work ‘100% Local’
CHILLY/From A1 That’s not even mentioning the keg room, which is kept at a chilly 32 degrees. “It’s three times the size of our old one,” he said. “When we were making the plans, we even added 30 percent more space to those to accommodate our craft beer kegs.” The cold storage was one of the biggest draws on a hot Saturday afternoon, June 25, when Allen, his managers and owner Lou Hager Jr.’s family, helped cut the ribbon on the new Northern Eagle facility; plans are to build a new Cooperstown Brewing Co. plant there in 2018. “Change is never easy,” he told a crowd of employees and visitors who gathered to welcome them to their new location. “And moving is never fun. But we all worked together and we got it done.” Tours took more than 500 visitors through the chilly warehouse, and free Brooks BBQ, plenty of beer and music by the Roundhouse Rockers made the sunny afternoon a festive one. “We’ve always said that making friends is our business,” said Allen in his remarks. “Thanks to everyone for being here.” “We’ve always had an incredible team,” said Hager, who developed Northern Eagle from Lamonica Beverage, which he bought in 1986. “These days, we have better trucks and a better facility, but it’s our team that will carry us into the future.” Allen has been a part of that team since nearly the beginning, starting as a parttime junior salesman. “I still have the ad on my fridge,” he said. “All that was required was a reliable car.” The project’s groundbreaking was in June 2014. “This project was 100 percent local,” he said. “I heard Arnie Drogan say that he never got a chance to bid on big projects and I knew I wanted to keep this local, not send it out to companies in Ohio. Money earned locally has a better chance of staying here in our community.” Even the majority of the beers they distribute across Otsego, Chenango and Delaware counties are local. “Seventy percent of our craft beers are from New York State,” he said. “And we just started carrying Finger Lakes wine.” New to the company is a

drive-thru for keg pickup. “We actually have a license to sell beer directly to customers,” he said. “They can just drive on through, and we’ll load up the keg for them.” To manage the new space, he hired eight more people. “A lot of people don’t realize that there are people who work here at night, wrapping all the pallets, loading up the trucks,” he said. But he’s got a way to make their jobs a little easier. Brand new gravityfed racking means that when an employee grabs a case of, say, Cooperstown Brewing Company’s Old Slugger, the next case will just slide right down. “It was $120,000 for the racking, but with faster pick times and increased efficiency, it’ll pay for itself in a year and a half.”

Goal: Burritos, 4 Duplexes In Former Newberry’s PROJECT/From B1 dy and Troy. Hewitt, his brother Jim and nephew Charlie pooled their life savings for the Oneonta project. “Jim will be the general manager; he’s opened all the Taco Bell franchises in Long Island and Rochester, and Charlie is going to school for culinary arts and hospitality,” he said. “We want this to be a family thing, something we can pass down through the generations.” The restaurant will have a takeout counter and an open kitchen, with the bar off to the front right of the building and a banquet room in the back. “We want to be able to open up the front for some patio seating,” he said. “We thought about having garage doors that would open up in the summer, but they don’t match with the historic feel of the building.” And though the original restaurant featured vintage pinup-style drawings of ladies reminiscent of the WWII bomber nose art, Hewitt noted that the franchise decor has been heading in a more family-friendly direction. “I have kids, I want a place where I’m comfortable taking them to get something to eat,” he said. “My dad, George E. Hewitt, flew bombers in WWII and Korea, so I’m thinking we’ll do some decor to reflect that.” They purchased the building for $250,000 and are currently seeking a $375,000 Community Development Block Grant from the state to help purchase equipment and help build the restaurant. “This will benefit downtown,” said outgoing Com-
munity Development Director Bill Kerbin, who helped put together the application. “They’re developing an under-utilizing building, reducing blight and bringing something that visitors and tourists will frequent.” One of the stipulations of the grant is that Hewitt has to create at least 25 full-time equivalent jobs to be offered to low-to-moderate income individuals. But Hewitt went above and beyond. “We’ll have 31 fulltime equivalent positions,” he said. And he isn’t stopping there. “When I was a kid, I wanted to be an architect,” he said. “I did my masters in urban planning at SUNY Albany. When I came in, I was taken by the ceilings in here, and then I saw the upstairs.” The former Newberry’s Department store – and before that, a boarding house for D&H workers – will become four two-story, market-rate apartments. “They’ll be nice apartments,” he said. “We want to preserve all of the original woodwork, those art-deco fireplaces. We’re saving every little thing we can.” The entire project will cost $2.6 million, with plans to open the restaurant in January and the apartments in the summer. “I’m extremely excited,” he said. “Everyone we’ve talked to is so gung-ho about this. We’re bringing jobs and another cool thing downtown.” “This seems like just the kind of place we want downtown,” said Oneonta Mayor Gary Herzig. “I feel good that we have someone who has expressed intent to convert that building into apartments. It’s a good project, and I see no downside.”
Learn To Shoot Skeet In Comfort SKEET/From B1 teach how to shoot skeet more accurately, thus making sport more accessible. “The idea came to me about four years ago while practicing at the Cooperstown Sportsmen’s Association skeet field,” Northrup said. “Nobody could tell you how far in front of the clay pigeon to aim the gun. I said to myself, ‘There has got to be a better way to teach this.’” Northrup, whose father Lynn Northrup was himself an inventor, said the skeet simulator provides realistic shooting practice without countless hours spent at the range and all accompanying fees, sore shoulders, blasted eardrums and lead debris. The inventor saw his skeet-shooting skills improve “from the very outset. I tested the first version three years ago, and for the first time, I saw exactly how far in front I should be shooting – and I started breaking clays.” Skeet shooting has been an Olympic sport since 1968 and can also be found among many colleges’ varsity sports. In realizing his plan, Northrup teamed up with his son Robert and famous shooting coach Pete Blakely to
form a company called Lead Tech. A lead is also a shooting term that refers to the method of firing ahead of a clay-pigeon’s projectory to ensure a hit. The crucial component of Northrup’s video game simulator is the Phantom Clay, an indicator of where in front of the real clay to aim and fire. Lead Tech has been granted two patents for this technology, and a third is still pending. He pointed out many NASCAR drivers got their start playing driving video games, and pilots train using virtual reality flight simulators. “The game is all to scale,” Northrup said, “so I can translate this into reality.” Currently, the user wears the VR headset and fires using a generic game controller. The next phase of the game’s development will be the addition of a controller in the shape of a shotgun to better simulate the experience. The game is not yet on sale, but will be available by next month. “We are assuming that this will facilitate greater interest and expertise in skeet shooting. I think it could be great for the sport,” Northrup said.
