Therapy Dog Tobey Debuts New Certification, Picture Book

ot content to let Maddie have all the fun with her book “Maddie Finds a Best Friend,” Tobey, Marjorie and Boyce Roger’s other Golden Retriever, has a book of his own. Titled Terrific Tobey! Tobey Becomes a Therapy Dog, the book, compete with 44 pages of color photographs, follows five year old Tobey as he takes his obedience classes – he doesn’t like to lie down – jumps and plays with Boyce in his agility lessons and even rescues a tiny kitten found under a neighbor’s porch. “A therapy dog has to be gentle and easy to get along with,” said Boyce. After passing his test – he even laid down on cue

–Tobey was certified as a Therapy Dog by Therapy Dogs International, which allows him to go to schools, hospitals and nursing homes. He is a frequent visitor at the Plains at Parish Homestead and visited the SUNY Oneonta and Hartwick College students right before finals. The book, written by Marjorie (with help from Tobey and Maddie), is packed with color photographs. “I take a lot of pictures of Maddie and Tobey,” she said. “So I photographed Tobey during his whole training.” Tobey will be meeting his fans and signing his book with his official paw-print stamp 1-2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 4, at the Green Toad Bookstore.

Alice Lichtenstein Awarded Feminist Foundation Grant

neonta author Alice Lichtenstein has been awarded a Money for Women grant from the Barbara Deming Memorial Fund for her novel-in-progress, “Security.” Lichtenstein, a lecturer at Hartwick College, is the author of two other novels, “The Genius of the World” and “Lost.” According to the grant application, her latest novel “seeks to draw atten-
tion to the deep personal isolation of 20th century, pre-feminist women.” She Lichtenstein will use the funds to offset the cost of traveling to Washington D.C. for research.

2-Year Terms Keep County Representatives Close To Electorate

et’s cast our minds back to 2007, when the Otsego County Board of Representatives approved a budget with a 2.2 percent tax increase, then discovered – horrors! – that the tax increase was actually 22 percent. A couple of culprits were soon identified in the public mind. One was Ron Feldstein, DOtego, then board vice chair and chairman of the Ways & Means Committee, which had – innovatively, with an eye toward the future – bought a new computer system that, insufficiently understood, was one root of the problem. While Feldstein had many sterling qualities – and still does; he continues as a successful realtor in Oneonta – he took the hit and was defeated for reelection that fall. In fact, the Democrats, who had cobbled together a majority by allying with Don Lindberg, R-Worcester, lost the majority in a Republican sweep. That’s called accountability. see no sign of Mitt Romney being ready for such a “Roberts moment.” I still have hope for Obama. He’s entitled to a victory lap for daring to go big – ignoring his advisers – to bring health care to the whole country. It’s a huge achievement. But he needs to go just as big on the economy if he wants the Affordable Care Act to be something we can actually afford. That requires economic growth. Yet Obama’s campaign has been all small-ball wedge issues, trying to satisfy enough micro-constituencies to get 50.1 percent of the vote. Listen to the broad reaction to Roberts. Look at the powerful wave he has unleashed for big, centrist, statesmanlike leadership. That all tells me that people are also hungry for a big plan from the president to fix the economy, one that will bite and challenge both parties at the scale we need, fairly share the burdens and won’t just be about “balancing the budget,” but about making America great again. The opportunity for such a plan is hiding in plain sight. America today is poised for a great renewal. Our newfound natural gas bounty can give us longterm access to cheap, cleaner energy and, combined with advances in robotics and software, is already bringing blue-collar manufacturing back to America. The county board was due to act at its monthly board meeting Wednesday, Aug. 1, on Rich Murphy’s idea but, whatever the outcome, the good news is any change of term length would have to be on the November ballot and approved by voters. Voters, prepare yourselves to vote nay. • An attentive and responsive county board is particularly important because of the contentious issues upcoming. Foremost is the future of Otsego Manor. There are cost issues, but they may resolve themselves to great degree when the economy rebounds, as it always does, after the presidential election. Beyond the cost issues, the county has a first-rate facility that is superbly serving our most atrisk and deserving population segments: Our grandparents, parents, and elderly friends and neighbors. Their security must not be put at risk, and a county board tied to
the electorate by two-year terms is one way to ensure the public’s will won’t be sidetracked. When push comes to shove, it’s hard to believe the electorate will support degrading Otsego Manor, and two-year terms make it more likely the county board will be responsive to that view. More generally, there is a need for the county board to be more proactive. What do we want Otsego County to be five, 10 and more years from now, and how do we get there? But right now, that question doesn’t seem to be part of the dialogue. Perhaps county representatives better protected from controversial decisions if they had four-year terms would be more likely to push the envelope. But if potentially controversial decisions – a county manager, reforming sales-tax distribution, creating a more business-friendly climate – aren’t going to be dealt with anyhow, what’s in it for the electorate to provide the reps with more shelter?

The Local News: Some wag placed a sign at the center of the great mud hole in front of the Herald building a few days ago which attracted no little attention. One side was lettered “Private Fishing Grounds,” and the reverse “No Fishing Allowed.” Unsightly places are these perennial Main Street mud holes. It would take but little work to do away entirely with the most of them. George Hungerford, who lives on the hill two miles or so east of the village, lost another child by diphtheria a few days since. This makes the fourth of Mr. Hungerford’s children that has died from this disease within the past few weeks. He has four children left. When diphtheria first made its appearance in Mr. Hungerford’s family and he was urged to make the strictest precautions to prevent its spread, he is reported to have replied that he “did not think it was catching.” There is no diphtheria whatsoever it may be added in the village. Economic hard times dramatically increase the risk of injuries and physical as well as mental illness – and the increase is greatest among the middle class, says a study released recently. “If an economist says the unemployment figures only have impacts on your pocketbook and your savings account, he’s lying through his teeth. It has impacts on your health and your behavior,” said Ray Catalano, an urban planner at the University of California-Irvine. “When a community is being stressed by things like economic change, that population will yield more health problems.” Based on interviews with more than 6,000 Los Angeles County residents, “what we found was that people who experienced undesirable job and financial events have about twice the risk of being ill or injured as people who don’t experience those events, and they have 2.5 times of having some psychological disorder,” Catalano said. Oneonta Yankees Trim Chinese from Hawaii in Heavy Hitting Soft Ball Game – The Chinese dragon met its Waterloo yesterday in a battle with the American Eagle, through the work of the Oneonta ball team, though both sides did enough hitting to win three or four ball games, as ordinary ball games go. The final score was 37 to 36 in favor of Oneonta. It was one of the most interesting ball games seen here in some time, and the way those boys did field the ball when the chance was given was a delight to the eye. Both teams were on their toes every minute, stopping several balls that were good for hits by a gilt-edged quality of work on the diamond. The performance of the entire Oneonta team was fine, every man sharing alike in the good plays, but the work of Kanyan and L. Akna for the Chinese is worthy of special mention as they robbed Tormey of two long hits in the deep outfield by two of the cleverest catches seen in a long time. Flynn and Lukyee were the opposing pitchers and were each touched for 11 hits, several of them for extra bases. Flynn struck out nine of the Hawaiian students and passed four while Lukyee fanned seven and passed none but hit three batters. August 1912

Under some conditions, a person might be considered an alcoholic only after 15 years of hard drinking. The guidelines were drawn up not only to standardize the diagnoses of alcoholism, but also to prevent over-diagnosis, Dr. Samuel C. Kaim said. Kaim chaired a 14-member committee that issued the criteria after a yearlong study of the problem of excessive drinking. She claims to be the first “flea-marketer” to offer over-thecounter underwear at the county’s annual celebration. “My boyfriend’s aunt sells this stuff in New York City and now I’m the second-hand man,” she said. “People at the fair enjoy it. You don’t find this stuff around Oneonta.” Borak is selling G-string underwear, G-string teddies and various styles of brassieres and garters. Otsego County court clerks have gone underground. Previously located in space at the county office next store to the courthouse, the clerks have moved into what was once a coal bin, since renovated for office occupancy, in the basement of the county’s 1880s vintage courthouse. The new room is larger, more accommodating and efficient than the former spaces. “I think the space is making us more productive, because it’s quieter and we’re able to concentrate better,” said Marcia Mickle, senior court office assistant. Both Kim and Kate competed at the Olympic trials in Raleigh, S.C., but while Kim made the top 20, Kate placed fifth and was selected as an alternate in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. “The opening and closing ceremonies were so exciting,� Kate said. “It was the first year the Dream Team
was there, and everyone wanted to be close to them, touch them, talk to them. If you were near them, like we were, it was pandemonium.� Though she trained up until the final day, she did not get to race. “You’re there, you’re ready to fill in if someone gets sick,� she said. And even though she cheered her team from the sidelines, she was still grateful for the opportunity to go. “I overcame a lot of health issues, so it was pretty phenomenal to even make it.� Kim decided not to keep training for the 1996 Olympics, but she didn’t hang up

rectors in 2000-2007. With their Olympic days behind them, Griswold lives in Oneonta with her husband, Russell and their children, Trevor, Wyatt, Maria and Isabell. She also continues to kayak and hopes to get a club starting locally. “I want to spread this around more,� she said. “I’ve been paddling with Andrea Thies; I’m teaching her about kayaking.�
Hendrickson-Borg lives in Charleston, S.C., with her husband and two daughters, Kirra and Malia. She’s an environmental consultant for Advent Environmental. She recently completed her first 6-mile SUS (standup surfboard) race, The Holland Outpost, on Lake Michigan. “It’s a one-anda-half mile down the coast and you surf the waves. It’s two loops, and then you run up the sand,� she explained. She came in third. And both still tune into the games to cheer on the USA Kayakers. “Watching the Olympics now, I know that feeling of giving it your all in a place that inspires greatness,� said Griswold.

hile many kids her age are excited just to play in the park, Emma Whitehead, 9, great-granddaughter of Springfield Center’s Joan Davis, takes her playtime seriously. “Emma’s been competing in triathlons since she was three,” Her mother, Elizabeth Whitehead, said. Emma’s triathlon consist of a 1/4-mile swim, a 12-mile bike ride and a 5K. She swims three times a week, runs five
days a week and bikes 20 miles a day on weekends. She is also training for the 2020 Olympic gymnastics team. Remembering Ken Stalter OHS cross-country coach Dan Forbes honors a friend by triathlons. In May, he founded the RatSnake Run – an 18K trail run, a 29K bike ride and a 26-yard swim through Gilbert Lake State Park – in honor of the late Dr. Kenneth Stalter.
