“I know one of the things that they were really pleased about was that we have so many mature trees in the village and that over the years we’ve done a good job maintaining our trees. There are a lot of trees that go back to before WWII that are lining our streets,” she

“The assessment went well this year. We were fortunate to have five members of the Tree Committee able to attend. We did it with 5 sets of eyes which is fantastic,” Cindy Falk, Deputy Mayor and Chair of the Streets Committee.“Wehave a number of village trees where it’s clear that parts of them have either already dropped their leaves or never had leaves at all this year,” Ms. Falk said. “We wanted to make sure we captured that and weren’t mistaking it for what normally happens in the fall, that’s why we did the survey earlier this year.”
Over the years I’ve been doing this, people have been generally favorable toward trees for good reason. They help with cleaning the air and water, and they provide shade which reduces energy costs,” Ms. Falk said.
“NYSEG (the utility provider in the Village) is primarily responsible for power line issues. They are very attentive,” Ms. Falk said. “There are many trees in the village that are on the same side of the street as the overhead wires and clearly that can cause problems if a branch breaks.”

Things that would increase the risk factor,” she said. “We look for trees that are dead, trees that have dead areas, branches too close to houses, and trees that need to be elevated over the sidewalk,” she said. The rule of thumb is that trees cannot have less than eight feet between the sidewalk and the lowest tree branch.

New Research About COVID Vaccines and Stroke Risk
COVID-19 vaccines do not raise the risk for acute arterial ischemic stroke (AIS) new research suggests. Pooled data from a systematic review and meta-analysis showed that postvaccine AIS events were about 20 times less frequent than were strokes occurring in the general population and roughly 200 times less frequent than were strokes occurring in patients hospitalized with COVID. The risk benefit ratio as it regarded strokes was heavily in favor of vaccination.

It’s Labor Day. It looks like we made it through an exceptional summer. Together, everyone in and around the Village put on their best clothes and their best behavior and their best attitude and their best work ethic and attracted a plethora of tourists and visitors and fans to stop by and take part. We, and our hardworking friends, went that extra mile, and it shows. Despite the still-raging virus, (some) raging tourists and (some) raging traffic, occasional evil deeds of entitlement, many fallen trees and very little help, we have come through. Thanks to everyone, the Village is awake and thriving. And so, by the way, are the monarchs; don’t cut your milkweed, these beautiful creatures need it for their arduous journey to Mexico, and let’s get back to work and school.

Launching a surprise attack under cover of darkness, Co. g, Monday night stormed Kiwanis Island in Neahwa Park and succeeded in wresting the fortification from the enemy. The attack was one of the problems in night operations mapped out by Captain Danforth Bolton, First Lieutenant Frank McCook, and second Lieutenant Franklin C. Davis. The crackling of rifle fire and the occasional boom of a big gun caused excited specula tion among residents of the city until it was learned that a “war” was on. Due to lack of artillery, bombs were used to simulate the “Big Berthas.”
Fourteen spaulding Co. truck drivers in the oneonta area will receive the benefits of a new union contract with the firm, starting Wednesday, september 17. The first immediate benefit of the new contract will be the inauguration of a five-day week. as a result of the shorter work week, in the future, no bread will be delivered on Wednesdays, but drivers will be expected to work more time on some of the other days of the week. other benefits to be granted, depending on approval first by the Wage stabilization Board, are a $2 weekly pay increase, and granting of three vacations after ten years of service.

Caretakers at each park performed daily visual inspections of the water. on Monday august 15, what looked like pollen in the water was observed at Three Mile. Testing indicated slightly over 5.0 µg/liter of micro cystin. We closed Three Mile for swimming. It was reopened after test results on august 18 indicated the level had dropped to 0.7 µg/liter. Unfortunately, the august 18 testing indicated that the level was high at Fairy spring Park (8.0 µ/liter) and that park was closed for swimming for several days.

The Village’s water treat ment plant ensures water purity in a multi-step process. The chlorine used for disinfection kills bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms, including microcystins. all these processes along with daily testing ensure the safety of our drinking water. The Water Department files an annual Drinking Water Quality report with NYs, which provides much greater detail on our water system and the testing. The conditions which allow a HaB to occur are known. This column reviews Village of Cooperstown public beaches, boat launch sites and most importantly, Village drinking water.
The Village has two public boat launches, Fish road and Fair street. There are five privately owned launches on otsego Lake which can also be used by the public. aquatic Invasive species (aIs) are a contributor to HaBs. However, the Village is the only launch site which employs three boat stew ards to inspect watercraft. stewards funded by the Catskill regional Invasive species Partnership (CrIsP), and the Village of Cooperstown are trained to iden tify aIs. They inspect, document and assist to decontaminate water craft before they enter Lake otsego.

“Our goal is to keep the lake as healthy as possible. We work with all of the different organizations that are dedicated to a healthy lake; OLA is the only organiza tion that is dedicated strictly to the lake,” Ms. VanHeusen said.

No he’s not lost fishing Oaks Creek or overdue from antiquing or walking the dog, Dr. John Geier Freehafer, 82, died suddenly but peacefully August 27, 2022 at home in Cooperstown with his loving wife of 37 years, Gail (Reid) Freehafer, and treasured dog LuLu with him. John was a devoted husband, caregiver, father, and a dear friend to many. He was best known for his quick intellect, games manship, robust appetite for good food and good times, wry sense of humor, uncanny ability to catch the larger fish, and his Polo aftershave.Johnwas born in New Rochelle, N.Y. on October 7, 1939 to loving parents Edward G. and Isabel (Houck) Freehafer, origi nally from Lancaster County, Pa. He and his parents spent (and he continued to spend) many wonderful summer days in West Dennis, Mass. foraging its shorelines with crab net, fishing pole or scallop rake, and its flea markets and antique shops. At least in his later years he was not kept roped to the bridge for safety, as his parents were prone to do.
John attended New Rochelle High School where he played standup bass in the dance band. He obtained his undergraduate degree from Brown University, and medical degree from McGill University.

– Mary Teresa Leary, 94, resident of Monroe County, was taken by the Lord on Sunday, August 28, 2022, in MaryRochester.was born on December 31, 1927, in Niagara Falls to Joseph David and Agnes Gertrude Maher.Mary graduated from Nazareth College of Rochester with a nursing degree and worked as a nurse. She married Dr. Herbert J. Leary in Lyons Falls in 1952, and after a series of moves, eventu ally settled in Poughkeepsie to raise one daughter and four sons. Later the couple moved to Cooperstown after building a home on Otsego Lake. Following her husband’s passing in 2007, Mary came to reside at The Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home in Cooperstown, a place she truly enjoyed and appreciated.Marywas a long-time member of St. Mary’s “Our Lady of the Lake” Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown and active in charity work, especially the American Cancer Society, Fenimore Art Museum, The Farmers’Museum, Women’s Club, Senior Bridge Group and the Cooperstown Food Pantry.Mary is missed by her

He and his college sweetheart Nancy Frazier (Herman) married in 1963. After moving around the country for his medical training and military service, the Freehafer family settled with 3 young children in Cooperstown in 1971. John did his best to help many other young families over a 30-year career as a pediatri cian at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital. As an avid fisherman, sportsman and treasure hunter/scav enger he was never one to back down from any rodand-reel or racquet sports challenge (and not shy about the foretelling of his opponents’ pending losses) and not abashed about collecting almost anything.

Part of this buoy is the weather station. Many years ago the buoy was purchased with a grant. Because some of the buoy sticks up out of the water, conditions cause deterioration.According to Dr. Yokota, Associate Professor of Biology at SUNY Oneonta, the weather station part of the multiifunctional unit is working at about 70 percent.

It was very poignant when Steve Dillon, a pitcher who only played three games for the team in 1963 and ‘64 was announced. He had been shocked to have been asked to attend, after all, who would remember him, someone who had been on the team for only a few weeks. You could see how much he truly enjoyed being there and finding that some of the players who were on the roster when he was, remembered him.
It was great to see the true happiness of all the players enjoying each other’s company.

I am a NY Mets fan. I’ve been so since their beginning in 1962 when I was 9 years of age. I don’t know how that came to be, but I grew up in Queens and the new team in town fascinated me. My father was not a baseball fan but my mother showed an interest, maybe just because of me and my brother, or maybe she was a fan on her own. Anyway, through my mother’s serendipitous meeting with the wife of the president of the Mets and her development of a friendship with one of the club executives, we spent many happy days at the Polo Grounds, mostly in 1963. We sat frequently in the unused box of the president. To make some of you jealous, I saw Gil Hodges, Duke Snider, and Marvelous Marv Throneberry play. Eat your hearts out! My mom somehow also became friends with Choo-Choo Coleman. It was probably my best summer ever.

I got my dog, Girlie, from the Susquehanna SPCA last December. She is a Rottweiler/ Australian Shepherd mix, about 7 years old. She has separation anxiety that has worsened in the past few months. Fortunately, she does accept being in a crate when I am gone. She is afraid of the sounds of strong wind, gunshots, or any sudden, loud noise, and tries to hide around my legs or under furniture.
When I am walking her, always on a leash, and we see another dog, she growls and barks and lunges at the dog. Does she want to play or fight?
You don’t want to reward the fear response by telling her “It’s okay” and giving her treats as she’s cowering.
