Thanks, Hamdi Ulukaya, For The Inspiration

amdi Ulukaya’s story is familiar around here, but still stunning to contemplate. In 2005, he happened upon the former Kraft plant in South Edmeston, started making Greek-style yogurt there, and today is running a $1 billion worldwide operation from the tiny crossroads on Unadilla Creek. On Saturday, June 8, in Monte Carlo’s Salle de Etoiles, he was named Ernst & Young’s World Entrepreneur of 2013. That’s World Entrepreneur; the whole, wide world. He bested 49 finalists from seven continents. “Entrepreneurs have done more than any other group to stimulate innovation, job creation and prosperity during both periods of growth Here’s the photo the Business Wire distributed from the Salle de Etoiles and in more challenging in Monte Carlo of Hamdi Ulukaya of South Edmeston receiving Ernst & Young’s World Entrepreneur of 2013 award. economic conditions,” Jim Turley, global chairevery immigrant’s American In the Village of (Occasionally, because – as man/CEO, Ernst & Young, dream,” said Maria Pinelli, Cooperstown, neighbors of you can imagine – his hours was quoted as saying on E&Y’s global vice chair for the Pioneer Street home that were fully consumed.) the Business Wire. “Hamdi strategic growth markets. he rented before moving to At the suggestion of his epitomizes the vision and • Norwich recall occasionally cheesemaking father, who determination that set entreUlukaya’s story has been waving to the slight, smiling was visiting from their preneurs apart.” told here before, of course, but preoccupied man who native Turkey, Hamdi had “Hamdi has rightly been but it’s miraculous nonethewould occasionally be seen started a feta-making plant called the personification of less. pulling out of his driveway. in Johnstown. With the

South Edmeston plant in hand, yogurt seemed as logical a next step as any other. As Ulukaya tells it, he and a half-dozen employees shipped a first palette to New York City not knowing what the reception would be. The next week, two palettes. The next week, six. (As it happens, this became one of social media’s celebrated success stories.) Now, of course, the numbers boggle the mind. Chobani employs 3,000 employees worldwide, more than half locally, and some 40 percent of those are from Otsego County. When you meet Hamdi, you warm up to him quickly. He’s a pleasant, approachable, 40-something guy, easy to talk to. But what reserves of flexibility, vision and steel he must have drawn on to achieve what he has. • Negativity is a self-inflicted scourge we humans too often indulge in, as many of our neighbors have with Hamdi Ulukaya and Chobani. Locally, we’re more like-

ly to hear about how milk trucks are tearing up roads that have been allowed to deteriorate for decades. Or about the plant’s challenges in disposing of its whey. Meanwhile, we ignore a special brand of genius operating close at hand. The reality is, whey will be processed – not immediately, but soon – by technologies that demand is a’borning. Roads can be redesigned to better handle the new challenge. Monte Carlo recognizes Hamdi Ulukaya before our Monticello or Mount Vision does. Let’s stop it. Let’s recognize him and Chobani for the gifts they are. Let’s root out the weed of negativity in our outlooks. Let’s celebrate Hamdi Ulukaya. Let’s determine to resolve any less-thanperfect spinoffs of what’s a huge success story. Hamdi did it. The ingredients of success are therefore all around us. Let’s take pride and satisfaction in that he did it here. And inspiration. Thanks, Hamdi Ulukaya, for the inspiration.

Mathes Underscores: County Should Seize Golden Opportunity To the Editor: I was pleased to read your article about the recent presentation to the county board by former Greene County IDA Director Sandy Mathes. It was a very good presentation full of good ideas, good suggestions and a possible road map forward for Otsego County. For quite some time some of us on the county board have been advocating for a county comprehensive plan, so it was refreshing to hear Mr. Mathes state that “planning, planning, planning” and having a vision – just what a comprehensive plan describes – is the key to success. In recognizing our assets and embracing the future – rather than looking to the past – we see so much potential. Higher education, medical resources, microbreweries, a dominant agriculture sector and athletics are just a few of the areas where we have a head start.

Mr. Mathes went on to say that environmental enhancement is a large piece of this pie – keep our air and water pure and we will attract business. In his own way he paid homage to home rule when he spoke about communities deciding for themselves the kinds of development they do and don’t want. Recognizing that competition is fierce, we need to stand higher, be smarter and commit funds to our IDA to be successful. His idea that we need to forget boundaries and work in partnership is crucial as it will take government, the private sector, planning boards and colleges etc. working as one to set us down the path we need to go. At this juncture Otsego County has a golden opportunity to succeed, let’s make the most of it. BETH ROSENTHAL County Representative District 7

Re Surveillance, We Have Chance To Set Ship Of State Aright To the Editor: A word on the unfolding NSA matter. Whatever our political opinions, we all recognize that this overall program is dangerous in the wrong hands. And I think we all recognize that we live in a world in which what can be done, will be done. And that

we have no way of knowing in whose hands this will eventually fall. Looked at that way, it’s clear to me that as long as these activities are allowed to continue, it poses a danger to the Republic. As an aside, I’ll say that I consider the private collection of customer data as dangerous as

the government collection, because the government can always get the private data – not to mention that it’s an unwonted intrusion on our privacy for gain. So what we have here is something that left unchecked will continue to expand according to its own logic, that will, eventually,

be a genuine threat to the nation, and that needs to be treated accordingly. If we can eschew the trap of finger pointing, we’re faced with an opportunity to set the ship of state aright, and I hope we as a nation don’t fall into that trap. ANDREW REINBACH Burlington Flats

RICHARD P. MILLER, Jr. FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK

No One Will Do Economic Development For Us Editor’s Note: This is an excerpt of opening remarks Mayor Miller delivered to the county board’s Intergovernmental Affairs Committee Monday, June 17.

T

he fact is that the City of Oneonta needs private-sector economic development. Almost 60 percent of our property is off the tax rolls. We will be unable to maintain essential services unless we can grow sales-tax revenues and develop increased business property tax income. Last fall, we received the second signal from the CFA process consistent with Sandy Mathes observation that “we are in the middle of nowhere.” Resultantly we have to take care of ourselves. We shouldn’t expect Utica, Albany or Binghamton to help us. At that time I prepared a map for Chris Gibson illustrating the point. I don’t expect the county to take an interest in Oneonta at the expense of the rest of your responsibilities. You have a fiduciary role to play in all of Otsego County. Similarly I have a fiduciary responsibility to the city. While my formal interest in the town is only as it supports the city, it is clear to me from the map that together we are the larg-

est mass of population and economic activity in Otsego County. If you add to that mass in the southern part of the county, areas of Delaware, Chenango and Schoharie counties that we influence, I like to say (knowing I offend people by doing so) that we are the center of the universe. As the city goes, so goes the town, and vice versa. As the community of Oneonta goes, so goes the county. I am delighted to ride on Cooperstown’s coat tails and other economic and tourism activity in the northern part of the County. I can’t affect that and thus should only focus on Oneonta.

Last fall in the context of our meeting with Congressman Gibson and the map, I formed an informal group of those entities thrashing around trying to positively affect economic activity in the Oneonta community. They included OCED, the city, town, the Otsego County Chamber, Citizen Voices, Go-EDC, Small Business Development Corporation, Southside and the Executive Service Corps. Each of these organizations has a specific role to play and each was, and is, working on particular economicdevelopment and tourism opportunities. Those efforts were unco-

ordinated and, even worse, unknowing of one another. For example, we had four separate groups working on the rail yards that were not working together and not even aware in some cases of what the other groups were doing. Our group meets monthly. We believe that the keys to the future of the Oneonta community’s economy fall in four areas: • Supporting the strengthening of the two colleges • Expanding our technology pod: Ioxus, Custom Electronics and Astrocom • Facilitating the expansion and exploitation of the explosion on Southside • Enhancing the downtown retail and entertainment district Finally it is my great hope that the city will develop a formal relationship of some sort with the town on economic development and certainly in cooperation and coordination with whatever the county chooses to do to move forward, at an accelerating rate, in this important activity. Sandy Mathes continually said throughout his presentation, “You have to do this, you have to do that, you, you, you”. I asked him who the “you” was. The obvious answer is that it is “us.”

Oneonta police are not kept very busy by serious crimes, but that allows members of the department to assist local residents in a variety of ways, ranging from retrieving keys locked inside cars to chasing bats out of houses. Motorists who lock their keys in their cars are the most frequent problem according to Police Chief John Donadio. “We get a lot of those – maybe 30 a month,” he said. “That’s almost one a day.” During the first two weekends this month, police handled only two criminal offenses and five criminal investigations, such as burglaries, thefts, trespassing and vandalism, in which no arrests were made. Meanwhile, there were more than 20 miscellaneous calls including parking, littering, loitering, under-age drinking, excessive noise, and reports of suspicious persons. June 1983

Hank Majeski, Dave O’Brien and Nick Lambros once again had to face the toughest job in baseball Tuesday when they had to tell free agent Geoff Wright he wouldn’t be with the 1973 Oneonta Yankees. Wright, a graduate of Ithaca College was working out at second base with the O-Yanks along with Randy Braxton from California. Free agents Pete Wyso and Don Anderson, fresh out of Hartwick College, remain with the club. Anderson is one of ten pitchers and Wyso is one of three catchers at Damaschke. Oneonta Tigers’ manager Randy Ready and his team are off to a flying start for the 2003 NY-P season as they completed a three-game opening sweep of the Vermont Expos with a 3-1 victory at Damaschke Field before 401 fans. Gilberto Mejia’s two run triple in the third inning keyed the Tigers’ offense and starter Luis Diaz scattered eight hits over five innings. “The pitching’s been good,” Ready said. “We’ve been playing good defense the first three games of the year with just one error and that was made in the outfield. It’s a bonus when the infielders can make the plays.” Diaz said he’d never allowed more than five hits in a game before. June 2003

When WWII scrap drives threatened “Little Bertha” the veterans of the first war banded together to save her. “They didn’t want her scrapped,” he said. “They wanted people to remember.” Along with five old machine guns, “Little Bertha” fetched a grand total of $21. A flower bed is planned for the area the cannon once occupied. June 1953

“Little Bertha,” a World War I artillery weapon that withstood the rigors of climate and scrap drives for nearly 30 years in front of the National Guard Armory, went to the scrap heap yesterday. Like an old soldier fading away, the howitzer-like cannon creaked and groaned a little before finally submitting to the junk man’s hammers. There was no fanfare – just a sigh of relief from National Guard officials. “That thing was getting a little dangerous,” a sergeant said. “The kids were playing around it and they might have gotten hurt. It was falling apart anyway. It was an eyesore.” The cannon, a 1917 one-ton Austrian field piece came to Oneonta in the early 1920s as part of a U.S.

shipment of war souvenirs to state armories. Adrian Jenks, an armorer recalls unloading “Little Bertha” from her crate and paying the freight charge of $40. Jenks took care of the gun until he retired two years ago. Jenks was proud of her. June 1888

Four grades at the Oneonta Plains School, together with their teachers, held picnics at local parks yesterday, and the other four will hold outings Thursday. The first and second grades, under the direction of Mrs. Helen Murray and Miss Frances Pennybacker, had dinner at Neahwa Park. Seventh and eighth grade pupils, with Mrs. Ruth St. John and Mrs. Blanch Loucks in charge, had supper at Wilber Park where a number of boys and girls went swimming in the park pool. Thursday’s program will include a picnic at Becker’s Grove near the school for the third and fourth grades under the supervision of Miss Gladys Church and Miss Grace Wilbur. The fifth grade outing will take place at Wilber Park and the sixth grade will go to Goodyear Lake. Miss Margaret Slade and Miss Geraldine Wall, respectively, will have charge of these two groups. Local News – Frank Pierce of Otego has purchased of Arthur M. Butts the local agent, a new Cadillac touring car. Mr. Pierce will never have reason to regret his selection. While there are many good cars being made these days there are none better at the price than these same Cadillacs. One of the largest regular passenger trains lately over the D. & H. through this city was No. 303 Wednesday morning, which consisted of ten cars drawn by two locomotives. The train, besides the regular equipment included three cars occupied by the Scranton, Binghamton and Troy baseball teams, a tourist sleeper and an extra Pullman. A model locomotive constructed entirely of wood by Thurlow Smith was on exhibition yesterday in the display window of Bresee’s Department Store and attracted much attention from passersby. It is a very clever piece of work and every part of the exterior of a real locomotive is found in proper proportion on the miniature model. June 1913

County Board, IDA To Discuss Shifting Economic Development To Quasi-Private Mode JOBS/From A1 Rochester then modeled its economic development effort after Indianapolis. Should Otsego County do that same? That question was to be discussed Wednesday, June 19, when county representatives – all were invited – and the county IDA (the Industrial Development Agency) were to meet at Oneonta’s Old City Hall. “Fragmentation is what’s killing us,” said Miller, appearing Monday, June 17, at county Rep. Betty Anne Schwerd’s Intergovernmental Affairs Committee at the county offices in Cooperstown. “...and government interference,” added county board Chair Kathy Clark, R-Otego, who also attended. “We have to be more

nimble.” Schwerd, the veteran legislator from Edmeston, has been exploring whether the county should adopt a different model for job creation after Economic Developer Carolyn Lewis announced she is resigning in August. At Schwerd’s recommendation, Kathy Clark invited Sandy Mathes, the former Greene County economic developer, to speak to her colleagues Wednesday, June 5. He received a positive reception there, and two days later when he spoke to Citizen Voices, the progrowth business group. Mathes advocates an independent model for economic development – as is being done in Saratoga – as more flexible and able to react to opportunity more quickly. It would receive some public support – in Greene, for instance, the county’s tobacco-settlement money was put in a revolving loan fund – but would be largely self-funded by project fees. That discussion was picked up at the IGA meeting after Carolyn Lewis urged members to advertise her position as quickly as possible to ensure a smooth

transition. County Rep. Ed Frazier, R-Unadilla, replied, “My gut tells me this: Economic development is not going to be county-run in the future.” Miller pointed out that the Hillside Commons, Newman Development Group’s

325-student housing complex near SUNY Oneonta, would generate $250,000 in fees to the IDA. Only the IDA has the money, Lewis agreed. “Everybody says the county has to invest in economic development,” she told the

committee. “The reality is: You aren’t going to do so.” County Rep. Linda Rowinski, D-Oneonta, said, “Sitting down with the IDA is step one.” The consensus quickly formed that should be done as soon as possible, and Lewis was asked to

schedule it two days later. “We need to be successful,” said Miller, who noted he has invited Mathes back to specifically discuss cityrelated issues. “How we get there is irrelevant. What’s important is we achieve that goal.”

City Clerk Opportunity Brings Douglas Kendall Back Home KENDALL/From A1 seized the day. “Given the opportunity to stay, that’s what we wanted to do,” he said. “When the clerk position opened up, it was natural to apply.” Born in Bath, Maine, and raised in western Massachusetts, Kendall attended the Deerfield Academy, the same prestigious prepara-

tory school that later graduated Otsego’s Olympian Sarah Groff. He studied history at Haverford College and, in 1999, joined The Farmers’ and Fenimore Art museums as the curator of collections, and moved his family to Oneonta. He also taught Collections Management and Care as an adjunct pro-

We had history, American art and, because New Bedford was a center of glassmaking, a lot of historical glass.” Kendall sees a direct link between curating and the clerk’s office. “When you visit a museum, it’s great to have all those artifacts, but

11th Scholarship In Joey’s Memory JOEY/From A1 received the $5,000 award at the ONC BOCES commencement Tuesday, June 18, at Milford Central School. Joey’s brother, Andrew, made the presentation. Joey took up welding at BOCES, excelling in a school where once dyslexia held him back. “He finally found a niche in what he could do.” After graduating from BOCES, Joey transferred out to the Hobart School, located in Troy, Ohio, where, after completing the nine-month course in 1981, he was one of only 10 students offered a job in Dunkirk, France, refitting oil tankers to liquid natural gas for the El Paso Natural Gas Co. He worked for six months and, when the work was finished, bought a Eurail Pass and toured Europe, collecting patches from all the countries he visited and sewing them onto his jacket.

Back in The States in the fall of 1981, he started looking for a job in nuclear power in Virginia, eventually landing a position at the Seabrook plant in New Hampshire, taking night classes to upgrade his certification. “He was only 21; everyone was much older than him, and he was the only one who wasn’t union,” said his dad. Joey applied to join the National Pipefitters Union, submitting letters of recommendation from Hobart and his fellow workers. He was accepted on Sept. 8, 1982, but the letter didn’t arrive until after his death. “He never knew he got accepted,” Joe said. “But we knew right off the bat that we wanted to start a scholarship. We want to support these students.” In addition to the insurance money, donations came from friends, family and people he’d met at Seabrook and Hobart.
