Maciej Żółtowski, Music Director of Fenimore Chamber Orchestra and Catskill Symphony Orchestra “I am a busy man!” said Maciej Żółtowski. “I am still the Music Director at Catskill Symphony Orchestra and am now the Music Director at Fenimore Chamber Orchestra!”, he said. “It’s not unusual to be music director for two or three companies. I remember my first meeting with Thomas Wolf, Executive Director, and we developed a fruitful relationship. It just all grew from there.“ “In every organization, the music director is always the conductor of the orchestras that we are talking about. This works for me because my idea is to fill the seasons to compliment our concerts so we can provide the audiences in the area with a full season of symphonic concerts, chamber concerts, of different character that don’t conflict with each other. They are completely different types of music being presented,” Mr. Żółtowski said. “The Fenimore Chamber Orchestra is a completely different type of music. It’s about a specific type of music that we call chamber music,” Mr. Żółtowski said. “It requires the musicians take a different approach. We selected our musicians by invitation, looking for those qualities.” “Playing in a chamber ensemble is similar to playing in a string quartet. A chamber ensemble is a group of solists. Our musicians are capable of playing solo parts. It’s a very select group of musicians,” he said. The difference between an orchestra and a chamber ensemble — there is a visible division between the principals of groups and others playing in the group. Not all musicians are willing to be a soloist. Not all want to be able to be heard as a separate member of the orchestra. It’s a different type of music making. A chamber ensemble is usually composed of between 10 and 25 musicians. That’s the design of the Fenimore Chamber Orchestra. A symphony orchestra can be an ensemble beyond 50 members. That’s the first difference. “The second is the qualities we look in for the musicians. The artistic path they choose is important, “ Mr. Żółtowski said. “We like to share musicians between companies. It’s better for the musicians. We want to attract talent and it’s impossible to keep that local talent if the opportunity is limited to just a few concerts a year. If the musicians stay busy and get paid, they will stay in our region. Economically this is really a win-win situation.”
Many of these people are world class players. “We want to bring them here and keep them here. We want to to create a local experience then export it to the outside so it’s something the area can be proud of. We are already getting invitations from outside our area to bring the Fenimore Chamber Orchestra to Utica and other surrounding areas,” Mr. Żółtowski said. “We are always looking for more funding and for more people to come on Board,” Thomas Wolf, Executive Director said.
“The more external collaborations we have the better. My idea is to be active in this community and be active in the area; it’s a really busy season. This is just the tip of the iceberg!” Mr. Żółtowski said. According to Mr. Wolf, tickets are going quickly. Go to https://fenimoreco.org/. The first concert is at Christ Church in Cooperstown on August 27.

Exploration Days at Hanford Mills The 2022 Exploration Days at Hanford Mills have been successful in giving visitors a chance to explore the Mill and experience a variety of engaging activities and programs offered by local presenters and staff at Hanford Mills. As part of the August 13th Exploration Day, they will again welcome cooper, Bob Allers. For 12 summers, he worked as a seasonal National Park Service Park Ranger at Fort Stanwix National Monument where he began learning the trade of coopering. Along with Allers, The Dave Brandt Chapter 210 of Trout Unlimited will be pondside for a children’s catch-and-release fishing day. Participants can bring their own poles or borrow one. Hanford Mills invites you to try your hand at some activities throughout the Mill and learn more about how we grind corn, build crates, and use belts and pullies to power our machines. Our best bets for local dining Cooperstown Sports Bar and Grill 4874 State Hwy 28 Cooperstown 607-322-4003 Cooperstownsportsbar.com
If you’re looking for a restaurant where you can bring a large group, there is just the place on Route 28 just outside of Cooperstown. Cooperstown Sports Bar and Grill not only has great food, but plenty of outdoor space for just about any size group. Attached to it is a goony golf as well that is small but fun. But let’s talk about the food. I was there with a friend one breezy afternoon and had one of the best Truffle Tots I’ve ever had. They are tater tots tossed in a truffle oil, truffle salt and topped with parmesan cheese then drizzled with roasted garlic aioli. WOW! Since I am from Tampa and I know Cubans, I had to try The Cuban sandwich here. It’s actually called a Cuban Reuben, smoked pulled pork topped with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and smoky Thousand Island dressing. It comes with grilled jalapeño cornbread and it is truly awesome. Go enjoy the Cooperstown Sports Bar and Grill. I’ll be back. Too many good choices on the menu! Tara Barnwell Publisher
Mt Fuji Restaurant 134 Main Street, Cooperstown 607-544-1088
On an evening stroll through Cooperstown? Need something delicious to take back to the hotel room? Try Mt. Fuji Japanese Restaurant. They are conveniently located right on Main Street within 100 feet of the traffic light. You can order ahead and easily pick up the food or take advantage of the indoor or outdoor seating. The menu has something for everyone. The hibachi menu has options for tofu, shrimp, chicken, beef, squid, and more and this all comes with sides of vegetables and rice. The last time I ate from this restaurant I ordered tofu off the Teriyaki menu, which has just as many options as the hibachi, and once again my adventure into new foods paid off. The tofu was coated in the teriyaki sauce with various vegetables on the side and a serving of rice. I had upgraded to their delicious fried rice for this meal. The vegetables were juicy, the Teriyaki Tofu fell apart almost as soon as I bit into it and was delicious with all the other flavors mixing together. It was a much easier food to eat than beef or chicken and I didn’t feel like I had eaten too much in the middle of the heat waves. Larissa Ryan Office Manager
