In a new study published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, researchers found that in order to provide guideline-recommended care, a primary care physician would require nearly 26.7 hours per day. The study looked at a hypothetical panel of 2500 patients, and what it would take to provide them guideline directed care (e.g. per The US Preventative Services Task Force guidelines). The studied catego ries included preventative care, in addition

After falling precipitously in 2020 (see this column last week) the U.S. life expectancy seriously again fell in 2021; native American/ Indian Alaskan natives were hardest hit. Again this is attributed to COVID and drug overdoses. Overall drop has been 3.0 years since 2019.
As a stated goal the $1.2 trillion Infrastructure Bill is focused on getting resources into “underserved communities” and the individual states will have much discretion over project funding dispersals to the cities, towns and villages.

What does this mean for our country, states and local communities? It sure sounds like a lot of money is on the table. A successful outcome for any state is leaving NO money on the table and the elected officials have an opportunity and duty to get monies distrib uted into localities producing maximum benefits for all. There are and will be many hands across the state extended out for these funds and the key to receiving any grant or loan is to get the first ask right and delivered structurally on point.

When we’re inspecting Village trees, we’re looking for trees that are split, or have holes from woodpeckers. • Execute and implement strategies where safety and quality are top priorities and ensure they work in conjunction with production, not at odds.

A near drought plus severe storms add to the problems. “Lately when we do get rain, we get these immense storms that come with high winds and lightning,” she said.

“The assessment went well this year. We were fortunate to have five members of the Tree Committee able to attend. We did it with 5 sets of eyes which is fantastic,” Cindy Falk, Deputy Mayor and Chair of the Streets Committee.“Wehave a number of village trees where it’s clear that parts of them have either already dropped their leaves or never had leaves at all this year,” Ms. Falk said. “We wanted to make sure we captured that and weren’t mistaking it for what normally happens in the fall, that’s why we did the survey earlier this year.”
“We also reduced our tree budget when it came to planting during the pandemic. So many of our revenues were down that that was an unfortunate place where we had to make cuts. This year we are back up to do our regular planting and we got an additional grant through the Arbor Day Foundation to plant even more.”
• Collect, interpret, and act on production and financial data to form strong strategic production choices.
“We recommended about two dozen trees that need to be removed, and about three times more than that that need trimming. The work won’t happen until the winter or until next spring when the leaves start to come out again,” Ms. Falk said.
Once we decide what we need, the Village requests bids to perform the service.

“I think what’s been interesting this year is that we are more increasingly aware of the risks. You need to balance those two. We certainly in no way want to get rid of our trees but at the same time, we need to be aware and make sure we are fostering healthy trees and not creating hazardous conditions,” Ms. Falk concluded.

The summer of 2022 will be remembered as the year our beloved Lake Otsego first suffered a Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB).

On Saturday, last, toward sunset, the sound of drum and fife, announced something martial. Soon, a regiment of volunteer militia commanded by Lieut. Col. Farrington, from the county of Delaware, appeared, preceded by an escort from this village of about 30 citizens, on horseback and a number of infantry. The regiments pitched their beautiful tents near to and eastwardly of the Court-house, which exhibited a spectacle, novel and interesting to a great part of the villagers. They remained in their encamp ment until Monday morning when the general was played — the tents struck, and they marched for Utica, from whence they will probably proceed to Sacket’s Harbor.
Summary of the News – Mr. Timothy Herkimer, whose arrest we noticed last week, was conveyed to Fort Lafayette on Saturday last. This was unexpected to him and his friends, as it was supposed he would have a hearing before some commissioner appointed by the Secretary of War.

Caretakers at each park performed daily visual inspections of the water. On Monday August 15, what looked like pollen in the water was observed at Three Mile. Testing indicated slightly over 5.0 µg/liter of micro cystin. We closed Three Mile for swimming. It was reopened after test results on August 18 indicated the level had dropped to 0.7 µg/liter. Unfortunately, the August 18 testing indicated that the level was high at Fairy Spring Park (8.0 µ/liter) and that park was closed for swimming for several Annuallydays.Three Mile and Fairy Spring close for the season on Labor Day. Although the waters were safe, the swim areas were occasionally closed prior to Labor Day due to a lifeguard shortage.

Milford – A regular cyclone passed just southwest of this village, Wednesday, about 2 p.m., sweeping everything in its path. Two storms seemed to meet — one coming from the northeast, the other from the south, and when they came together it formed such a whirlwind or cyclone as has never been seen in this section. It was about onefourth of a mile wide. It first unroofed several buildings on the “Crouch,” a place owned by David Wilber; then it took an easterly direction, taking the roof from Menzo Wilcox’s barn, and ruining apple trees in great numbers. It next took W.L. Baker’s hop kiln from its foundation. A kiln of hops was in process of drying, and the kiln barely escaped being burned.

The Village has two public boat launches, Fish Road and Fair Street. There are five privately owned launches on Otsego Lake which can also be used by the public. Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) are a contributor to HABs. However, the Village is the only launch site which employs three boat stew ards to inspect watercraft. Stewards funded by the Catskill Regional Invasive Species Partnership (CRISP), and the Village of Cooperstown are trained to iden tify AIS. They inspect, document and assist to decontaminate water craft before they enter Lake Otsego.

Finally,AIS.Otsego Lake serves as the drinking water source for the Village of Cooperstown. Our municipal water system is regu lated by the NYS Department of Health, and follows standards set by the EPA. The Village’s water treat ment plant ensures water purity in a multi-step process. The chlorine used for disinfection kills bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms, including microcystins. All these processes along with daily testing ensure the safety of our drinking water. The Water Department files an Annual Drinking Water Quality Report with NYS, which provides much greater detail on our water system and the testing. The 2021 Report is on the Village underhttps://www.cooperstownny.orgwebsiteWaterandSewer.
The conditions which allow a HAB to occur are known. This column reviews Village of Cooperstown public beaches, boat launch sites and most importantly, Village drinking water.

No he’s not lost fishing Oaks Creek or overdue from antiquing or walking the dog, Dr. John Geier Freehafer, 82, died suddenly but peacefully August 27, 2022 at home in Cooperstown with his loving wife of 37 years, Gail (Reid) Freehafer, and treasured dog LuLu with him. John was a devoted husband, caregiver, father, and a dear friend to many. He was best known for his quick intellect, games manship, robust appetite for good food and good times, wry sense of humor, uncanny ability to catch the larger fish, and his Polo aftershave.Johnwas born in New Rochelle, N.Y. on October 7, 1939 to loving parents Edward G. and Isabel (Houck) Freehafer, origi nally from Lancaster County, Pa. He and his parents spent (and he continued to spend) many wonderful summer days in West Dennis, Mass. foraging its shorelines with crab net, fishing pole or scallop rake, and its flea markets and antique shops. At least in his later years he was not kept roped to the bridge for safety, as his parents were prone to do.

Part of this buoy is the weather station. Many years ago the buoy was purchased with a grant. Because some of the buoy sticks up out of the water, conditions cause deterioration.According to Dr. Yokota, Associate Professor of Biology at SUNY Oneonta, the weather station part of the multiifunctional unit is working at about 70 percent.

I am a NY Mets fan. I’ve been so since their beginning in 1962 when I was 9 years of age. I don’t know how that came to be, but I grew up in Queens and the new team in town fascinated me. My father was not a baseball fan but my mother showed an interest, maybe just because of me and my brother, or maybe she was a fan on her own. Anyway, through my mother’s serendipitous meeting with the wife of the president of the Mets and her development of a friendship with one of the club executives, we spent many happy days at the Polo Grounds, mostly in 1963. We sat frequently in the unused box of the president. To make some of you jealous, I saw Gil Hodges, Duke Snider, and Marvelous Marv Throneberry play. Eat your hearts out! My mom somehow also became friends with Choo-Choo Coleman. It was probably my best summer ever.
It was great to see the true happiness of all the players enjoying each other’s company.

So when you are approaching another dog on your walks, give her treats and try to keep her attention on you. Girlie also needs to be taught the “Leave It” command, to ignore whatever else she’s focused on.
First, you have to get Girlie to love the comfort and security of the crate. It’s the only place she gets people food. Several times throughout the day, toss little pieces of chicken or ham or whatever into the crate as you tell her to go to her house. The crate door is left open.
In the great majority of cases dogs are more aggressive on leash than off-leash. While you
may think they are protecting you, in actuality they just feel more secure being attached to you with the leash. The first mistake that most people make is reacting negatively the moment they see another dog. You’ve actually exacerbated the problem.

goodbyes. Just “See ya later Girlie” as you toss a few of the treats into the crate, in addition to a couple of hollow marrow bones. When you come home it’s a casual “Hi Girlie.” Then let her out of the crate, no big deal. Then remove the special marrow bones. She only gets them when nobody’s home! Period. Soft classical or believe it or not, country western music in your absence may help. The old saying, “A tired dog is a well behaved dog” has some validity to it. A walk before you leave can’t hurt.
those players who were heroes in real life regardless of their base ball statistics; Ted Williams, Bob Feller, Yogi Berra, all who served in combat. Well, Steve Dillon, a New York City cop, is now a baseball hero also.
Dillon clearly prepared for his ten minutes on the mound. He was the oldest participant who actu ally played in the game and he could still bring it on. He pitched awfully well for an octogenarian. When his playing career ended, he became a New York City policeman.Mybaseball heroes are entirely
as a Giant and Met, retired also. Mays played with the Mets in 1972 and ’73. Payson died less than two years later before the promise could be fulfilled.

Finally, this year the new owner, Cohen decided to fulfill that promise. The ceremony was a surprise to almost all, though Mays and his family knew. As the TV cameras panned the field and stands; you could see men tearing up; one was a man in the crowd, another the former pitcher and current TV analyst Ron Darling. Mays sent a statement that was read and according to his son, he was watching the festivities.
You don’t want to reward the fear response by telling her “It’s okay” and giving her treats as she’s cowering.
There are plenty of dogs who have great lives without being social butterflies when it comes to being with other dogs. Good luck Dog Charmer Tom
It was very poignant when Steve Dillon, a pitcher who only played three games for the team in 1963 and ‘64 was announced. He had been shocked to have been asked to attend, after all, who would remember him, someone who had been on the team for only a few weeks. You could see how much he truly enjoyed being there and finding that some of the players who were on the roster when he was, remembered him.
On Saturday, August 27, the Mets held Old Timers’ Day in Queens for the first time in 28
The spectators who attended the celebration will mostly, though, remember the surprise tribute to Willie Mays. It brought tears to many. When Mays’ time as a super star was up in San Francisco, the Giants traded Willie to the Mets. This was engineered by the then owner of the Mets, Joan Whitney Payson. Payson had been an owner of the NY Giants before they moved to San Francisco. Of all the owners of the Giants, she was the only one who voted against the move. Payson loved Willie and thought he should end his career back where he began.
Retiring Number 24 — Mets Honor Willie Mays homes
The fun they had playing again, or at least attempting to play again, the game they loved so much. You could feel the love some of these guys had for each other and the respect for each other all of them had.
I have seen over-the-counter products help with some dogs. You may want to ask your vet.
Feed her one of her two meals a day in the crate with the open door. Next, I want you to seri ously de-emotionalize leaving and coming home. No sorrowful
I got my dog, Girlie, from the Susquehanna SPCA last December. She is a Rottweiler/ Australian Shepherd mix, about 7 years old. She has separation anxiety that has worsened in the past few months. Fortunately, she does accept being in a crate when I am gone. She is afraid of the sounds of strong wind, gunshots, or any sudden, loud noise, and tries to hide around my legs or under furniture.
AllOTSEGO.

years. For this, we thank the team’s new owner Steve Cohen who rescued the team from a fourdecade ownership experience less than welcomed by the fans. For most of that time, the team seemed parsimonious and happy to play second fiddle to the Yankees. The Mets are now winning again. The fans demonstrated their apprecia tion for the new ownership when Cohen received one of the loudest cheers of the afternoon.
First things first — thank you for being one of the good guys and adopting from the shelter. You are not alone when it comes to separation anxiety.

When I am walking her, always on a leash, and we see another dog, she growls and barks and lunges at the dog. Does she want to play or fight?
Dear Girlie’s Frustrated Companion (GFC),
When Mays joined the Mets, it was said that Payson promised him that when he ultimately retired, she would have his number 24, which he had worn all his career
In lieu of drugs, if you want to actually de-sensitize Girlie to loud noises go on the internet and get a recording of the sounds that often scare dogs such as thunder, sirens, gunfire, etc. Then have her lie down on one of her favorite comfort spots and play the recording softly enough for her to tolerate it as you give her tiny pieces of people food. With patience and repetition slowly increase the volume, increasing her tolerance and desensitization.

Willie Mays epitomized base ball in New York City in the 1950s. He lived in the community in which he played and frequently would play stickball (for those of you unfamiliar with it, another story altogether) with the neigh borhood kids. It was fitting that he returned home to retire.
The Mets fulfilling a promise made 50 years ago, hit it out of the park!
