OWN COLUMBIA’S ARTS DISTRICT

THE BERRY BUILDING SPRING 2021- STUDIO 4

1033 E. Walnut is a historical building on the outskirts of Columbia, Missouri’s arts district. The arts district is full of life and character, as it is home to many art galleries, coffee shops, and cafe’s.

As both locals and visitors frequent the area, it is an opportune place for change. The building will better serve the coomunity as a high end boutique hotel, with an additional coffee bar that transforms into a cocktail bar in the evenings.

SITE

PROBLEM SOLVING

Surrounding the building are art galleries, apartments, and small businesses. The north side will be used as the main guest entrance for convenient parking, while the south entrance will be used to enter the coffee bar.

-No main entrance -Lack of wayfinding and visual cues -Few balconies -No greenery -Little protection from weather

COFFEE BAR The coffee bar acts as a traditional coffee shop during the day, and turns into a swanky cocktail bar at night that specializes in espresso cocktails. This dual-purpose space reflects the project’s concept, and allows the space to be open for a longer amount of time.

The furniture chosen reflects the color palette in the lower lobby, to develop continuity between spaces. A focus on saturation, pattern, and tension between elements.
