D*School Crash Course Objective - To

try different ways of finding the best iteration using creative ideas of a design process.

This process was definitely different. At first, it was a little awkward because we had a limited amount of time to get to know our assigned partner and help them complete the process. I did not like the awkwardness between us. However, working with someone I did not know all that well was a great learning experience, so after a while, I enjoyed it. I was surprised at how well my partner and I got along and how creative we got with out questions for each other. Another place to apply this method is with a potential client. I hope to become a graphic designer one day, so I can share this method with my team of designers and co-workers on how to create a stronger create a successful product/ advertisement.

1

Steps to the course:

1. Start by gaining empathy: interview your partner, dig deeper, and capture findings. 2. Ideate: take a stand with a point-of-view, sketch, and share solutions.

3. solution, Iterate based on feedback: reflect and generate a build, and share solutions. 4. Reflection: group gather and debrief.

Dot Line Objective - To master abstraction and convey different ideas with elements limited to dots and lines, to master good craftsmanship, and to create visual hierarchy.

My understanding of gestalt principles has improved very much due to this project. Creating abstract art from dots and lines was difficult, and the craft portion of the project was also challenging. A tiny spot of glue or a tiny piece of paper not cut off properly can drastically change the piece of art. Getting the small details is key in the design field. One tiny mistake can show the consumer a lot about the particular product or design. Bad craftsmanship can ruin an entire advertisement as well as the future reputation of the company/designer. Abstraction is very interesting to me. I love that I can think outside the box looking at an abstract piece of art.

Hand Lettering Objective - To reflect on how the shape and form of the letters affects the overall

meaning of the word, to master good craftsmanship, and to create different fonts by hand.

Hand lettering is an effective way to get an idea established. Hand letters communicate differently than digital letters because the creativity is shown clearer. Seeing the brush strokes and slightly imperfect hand motions on the paper helps the consumer relate to it more in my opinion. Digital letters are very useful in the design world, but also overdone sometimes. Hand lettering is what makes a piece of art unique; no one else has used that font before. My experience with hand lettering taught me that I enjoy designing by hand and scanning it onto the computer rather than working digitally completely. Hand lettering a large piece would be difficult and time consuming, but you cannot rush art at all. I could go as big as I want in terms of scale and font size, but there cannot be a rush because one small flaw can change the look of the entire advertisement. However, it is possible that the slight flaws are what consumers want to see, and that makes the advertisement more successful. 8

Object Iterations Objective - To challenge myself in the variety of media I was open to using, to establish creativity and range in different iterations, to come up with as many iterations as I could that defined a wolf.

Through this process, I learned the different movements of a wolf. The most challenging media I used was collage. I did everything I could to create the profile of a wolf: looked at different artists’ work, tried working through it with my own ideas, and much more. However, I just could not create a decent looking wolf collage. The most enjoyable was definitely ink. I love using ink and a brush as well as the ink wash. Scanning and editing the images in Photoshop will be very useful in the future as I hope to start my career in design. In order to represent this object in new ways, I would try and make wolves in different positions other than just howling such as running, sitting, laying down, and jumping.

Children's Book Objective - To collaborate with clients, to create visually compelling images according to the text given from the client, and place images and fonts in an appealing manner.

Working with my partner showed me how much knowledge I have gained about the design world in my time at St. Norbert College. I used vocabulary that she was not very familiar with such as gestalt, and she told me she trusted me with the project as she though I knew what I was doing. The strengths my partner brought were a concrete image of what the main character would look like, It helped me to know what he would look like so I can build the other images off of his looks. My partner also helped me by telling me what media not to use. The critical feedback I received was very useful and honest. I prefer honesty over someone just being nice. I like to know what I can or cannot do to improve my work. For example, my partner told me she did not like that the main character had glasses. I was happy she told me because I want to make this book as best I can according to her story line.

Illustrating Nolan

My goal was to make Nolan look cute and innocent, but at the same time a little clumsy. I purposely illustrated him with his hair messy, and for him to be wearing bright clothes. The author wanted Nolan to be a little lost and confused on what his talent was according to the storyline, so I illustrated different versions of him with a confused look on his face.

Font

When the time came to decide on a font, I decided to do a handwritten font. The hand lettering project taught me that a unique font is what makes a piece successful, so I decided to do my book in handwritten font with black ink. I wanted the font to look like children’s handwriting.
