(7) THINGS ABOUT ME
1
I am a newly licensed Landscape Architect with 3.5 years of experience.
2
I feel called to this profession as a vehicle to affect change in a changing world; to create a legacy of health, vibrancy, inclusion, and beauty.
3
I am extraordinarily curious. This compels me to ask a lot of questions. It is a terrific learning habit.
4
I feel satisfied at the end of the day if I have gotten a little bit better. This requires a habitual practice of stepping out of my comfort zone.
5
I am looking for an opportunity to work in a vibrant and flowing outfit where I both sweat and laugh with my colleagues, listen and be heard, take ownership of my work, take risks, and continue to mature as a professional
6
For fun, I ride my bike, play flaneur in all urban and ecological areas, forage for and cook whatever is in season, rock climb, and go backpacking in places like Utah. I also sew, play volleyball and most other team sports, and occasionally install guerilla art projects.

Ritual
Cemeteries feel like a hold out in modern culture in the ancient way in which we spend time there. Master planning and implementing Veterans Cemeteries for the State of Minnesota has been an honor for me.

A question I have been asking our team lately is, “How can this columbarium design be more about being present in the space - and actually spending time there - versus just being a drop-off-my-loved-one-and-leave type of experience? Can we do more?”

Design Documentation & Implementation
This project type is a true team effort for our Landscape Architecture group. I am contributing to the columbarium layout, leading the planting design, and own 28 layout and detail sheets of our most recent project near Duluth, MN. It is a real joy to build with quarried natural stone and to consider, for instance, which flashing detail will age most gracefully. Likewise, cemeteries are well maintained spaces; a contrast to the important albeit dollar-strapped public work to which I also contribute.

BOSSEN FIELD PARK with Stantec Consulting
Mas ter Planning
Racial Equity
We master planned the 37-acre Bossen Field Park in south Minneapolis. This process was about balancing the need to update a city-wide recreational (softball) facility while also serving as a meaningful neighborhood park for the immediate community.
We had the opportunity to help MPRB pilot their first Racial Equity Impact Assessment. I spearheaded both an online engagement platform and voting clicker technology as part of that larger process.

I am leading the implementation of Phase 1 of this master plan as we speak. I am on site 2x/week on average, running a site meeting of up to 12 people including the client project manager and the construction team, and trouble shooting issues related to unknown conditions. A former wetland before being developed into a park back in the early 1950s, 3,000cy of contaminated material have been excavated and hauled away. Heavy utility conflicts have been numerous, in addition to incorrect survey data and grades tying in.
BOSSEN FIELD PARK BENCH
Inspiration 1
The MPRB project manager proposed a base vision of concrete benches on site. I took this and ran with it, feeling challenged to figure out how to make a cold material functional, comfortable, and aesthetically additive to the park.
Ins piration 2
A unique Elizabeth Close (first MN licensed female architect) shelter exists on site. Its roof line is especially dynamic and reminds me of art deco geometries I admire such as the vintage high heel image shown bottom left.

I carried the custom bench design through the detailing process, where I learned an immense amount about concrete (and its components) as a material, constructability, and the cost estimating of a custom element.

MPLS DOWNTOWN EAST PEDESTRIAN AUGMENTATION STUDY with Stantec Consulting
U rban Des ign
Minneapolis Public Works realized that with all the development arriving in Downtown East (DTE) due to the new Stadium, that they had an opportunity to leverage private investment to bolster a coordinated and robust public realm. Enter consultant.
Mapping
I mapped existing conditions sans planimetric data by bootstrapping data including an ortho, a Minneapolis streets book, bike and transit facility plans, and whatever proposed developer site plans I could get a hold of. This groundtruthed AutoCAD - Illustrator process resulted in a technical yet quickly legible Existing Conditions Maps.
Pedes trian & Bike Realm
Next, I translated an engineering diagram of which vehicular lanes Public Works decided to eliminate (opposite page) into new street sections. We made decisions about where this gained space was allocated to the pedestrian and bicycle realms by cutting multiple sections per block (for a total of 100+ sections) to frame up important decisions for the city such as, “on-street or off-street bike lanes/ways? and to highlight proposed improvements.
Quick rendering of proposed improvements (above)

The City of Blaine had 511-acres of remnant Anoka Sand Plain to develop into a nature-based park. We designed ~8 miles of varied trail experiences, including supportive elements such as wildlife viewing platforms and an interpretive center (opposite page) together with MSR architects.

Mapping
The sensitive nature of the Anoka Sand Plain required that I map many combinations of the 30+ layers of GIS data to ensure the sanctuary’s design respected the its innate ecological features. The resulting design preferences ecological sensitivity in context of constructability, ease and cost of long-term maintenance, and available capital dollars (opposite page).
Entrance Site Des ign
I worked closely with the architects to communicate the driving forces of the sanctuary’s ecology, to ensure its spirit was expressed in both the siting and architecture of the interpretive center. Our design objective was to gesture to visitors, “Yes, come see us - but really, go be outside in this outstanding wetland sanctuary!”
Concept Sketch that led to final site design. Project contract being awarded as of 11/1/2016

BLAINE WETLAND SANCTUARY
THE NEXT NICOLLET My graduate thesis project
In my design proposal, I co-opted the (5) skyways that cross the Nicollet corridor to showcase the Next Nicollet’s new ecological “programs” as spectacle. I took inspiration from the potency that we experience on a fashion runway, where spectacle is made from new hemlines and pant cuts, which we phenomenally all adopt. I likened our current, prescriptive landscape aesthetic regime to what havoc the corset ran on women
[
Now that we have become an urban species, we are compelled to harness urban ecosystems to improve sustainability and human health and strengthen our relationship to the natural world.
both physically and culturally for centuries. Like women desperately needed to be released from the corset, ecologies need to be released from outdated ideas about how they “should” look. Abandoning the “Nature - out there” mentality is likely key to this aesthetic acceptance and thus, a more ecological existence.
-MARK SIMMONS, PhD
]
“N atu re ” v s “ E c o l o g y”
A ecology nerd to my bone, the research process revealed to me that “Nature” is entirely a cultural construct. Looking to our most urban and beloved spaces, why couldn’t a “Near-Nature” corridor exist in our downtown, especially at a cultural spine like Nicollet Mall in need of a revamped identity? To accomplish that, however, we need new ecological typologies.
My Des ign A pproach
My design approach came out my agenda to craft a gestural and verdant experience to shift a person’s experience on the NEXT NICOLLET of ecology and its place in the heart of downtown Minneapolis. Further, I wanted to inspire the use of challenge and imagination in urban design in inserting an ecology, which if sustained culturally, could become a key strategy for negotiating a more ecological existence.
T h e S wa t h : a n Urb an E c o l o g i c al Typology I created a series of new ecological typologies to help us as designers get past the largely aesthetic function of standard street trees and planters in our urban environments. The “Swath,” is an architectural facade that transforms a tamed, cold, granite and concrete corridor into a place that evokes a sense of wildness and psychologically prods the public to reimagine the place of ecology in urban environments, and perhaps their role in this environment as well.
The swath is composed of a steel lathes, arranged like window shutter lathes that aggregate dead plant matter. This system facilitates decomposition and thus soil formation (a function critical to an authentic ecology) and over time would support a thriving microbial community, pollinators, even nesting birds.
