THESIS / THE GANJ GAME TAICHUNG CITY SPONGE
A Taichung Game Cities are more than the collection of their streets and their buildings- whether they are the homes of the ordinary or the monuments of the very rich. They are more than the places where people live, play, work, earn and die. Cities are also stories, mythologies, and narratives. They are journeys, encounters, conflicts, and resolutions. They tell stories of the relationship between people and other people, between civilization and nature, between the real and the unreal, between the known and the unknown. All cities tell these stories through their spaces and people- through their patterns, textures, surfaces, and spaces. Architecture is bound in all of these. It tells the story of the city and often these stories bridge across time and space. This semester we shall try and explore spatial themes through the act of story telling. In these stories we will try and span what might seem to be insurmountable differences. In them we might find what binds us together as people- in spite of our cultural peculiarities. During the Mughal empire (1526 to 1757) in the North of India a game used to be played: ‘Ganj’. This game, like so many others including modern day video games, was a tale of a journey of the encounters of a traveler. As the dice rolled the traveler went through many different landscapes, meeting strange people and animals- some real and many unreal. The traveler finds many strange objects on the way to the ‘treasure’ in the center. And this ‘treasure’ was the experiences he or she had gathered along the way. To each of the travelers who undertake the journey the treasure would be different; to each of them they would have in their minds their own version of the journey. The eye of the traveler is one of a detached but interested person. A traveler in an unfamiliar land is aware of all the details around. Every single thing takes on multiple meanings. What we often see as ordinary becomes extraordinary in the eyes of someone traveling through. How often it is that we are able to find beauty of the unexpected in the everyday? What we take for granted can often take on a new light when seen through the distanced eye of a traveler. In Italo Calvino’s famous book about travel and the city ‘Invisible Cities’, Marco Polo tells Genghis Khan details of the various cities under his realm. Each of these cities is fantastic in its own way- some are mirrors, some lenses, some perpetually rising- the list is long and fascinating. Gradually we get to realize that all these cities could be any city- or it could be the very city that we are in. By playing the game of Ganj in the city we are hoping uncover new cities within Taichung. The project explores a notion of a journey as a way of gaining knowledge about the city. It attempts to uncover the stories and landscapes of the city we have often forgotten or taken for granted. The game board attached is played anti-clockwise from the top right to the center. With every roll of the dice you move forward towards the middle collecting ideas from the board and Taichung for your interpretation and the city you will build.
CITY SPONGE
FOR NEW MIGRANTS IN TAIWAN Location : Central Dist.,Taichung City, Taiwan (R.O.C.) Adviser : Rohan Shivkumar / Shu Chih-Feng Individual Work
The city is constructed of many communities that have the ability to change the urban appearance of the city. They should be able to absorb and have flexible self-adjustment like a sponge. The new migrants in Taichung have changed the inner city landscape little by little since 1990. Until now every weekend lots of new migrants will gather in the inner city from Taichung station to first square and the area surrounding it which totally changes the landscape of the inner city which is important as it represents a new city developing in the inner city. Taichung sees itself as an “international city” (high-end) but what I am looking for is a different idea of “international city” in Taichung: a new city by new migrants in Taiwan.

From 2013 till 2031 the number of new migrants continues to grow, with a large number of migrants in the future, what is the future Taichung city? Are we really ready to accept an international city? People always thought the high-end globalization is the only way to connect to the world, but there are more different ideas of international city to consider about. I am looking at Taichung city as a new arrival city for new migrants in the future, because new migrants bring lots of life, taste, money, and culture and opportunity into this area.

MIGRANT'S MENTAL MAP OBSERVATION IN INNER CITY This idea of city sponge is a gift for the declining inner city and it also opens to the world. As a new arrival city for new migrants, First Plaza Square and its adjacent complex building will be reprogrammed to absorb the collage of different life styles, colors, cultures, tastes, smells, foods and trades, etc. to become the biggest migrant gathering center in Taiwan, where one ďŹ nds different self-identiďŹ ed mini-cities and the exotic joyful fancy mega-city as a whole. Thus, a new international collage city will emerge.

Duo Work
The countryside is always a background to a city like Yilan. In 2006, the construction of highway No. 5 connecting Taipei and Yilan through tunnels had successfully been constructed. That turned Yilan into a garden for Taipei people, everyone can easily go, which brings a lot of tourists each year followed by numbers of tourist spots, coffee shops, hotels, etc. So when Yilan is no longer a background for the big city then what about the countryside of Yilan itself, what is the future for those areas and local people who live there? Our goal is to find the identity of Jhuang-wei and combine our design method to multiple systems; in future those systems can apply to anywhere in Yi-lan city.

From our observation, we found that there are a lot of abandoned ďŹ shponds from the aquaculture businesses, which created a special landscape to that area, Zhu An Village, and that could be a possibility to be reused and can be an advantage to the site and those villagers. So our design is mainly about reusing the abandoned ďŹ shponds by generating a natural water treatment system through those abandoned areas, which will improve the quality of the soil according to the percentage of salinity in soil from the site that made those ponds no longer suitable for use.

Location : Toucheng Township, Yilan County, Taiwan (R.O.C.) Adviser : Lo Shi-wei/ Hsieh Ying-chun/ Huang Bao-yi/ Ouyang Chin Team Work
This project is an on-site project or design-build that works with a Taiwanese architect, Xie Ying Jun, and the location for the site is located at his ofďŹ ce in the middle of Taiwan, Nantou, Sun Moon Lake. The main concept of this project is about Tectonic.
SIMPLE CONSTRUCTION / Tent practicing
We started by practicing with a simple construction using simple materials that can be found around the site, such as wood and bamboo to build a Tippy Tent and Indian Tent. After that Xie Ying Jun taught us how to use light-weight C-beam steel, like how to connect or cut etc., to use with our real design.
SITE STRATEGY Light-Weight C-beam Steel Construction
CONSTRUCTION SITE
My team consists of 4 people. Our building site is between the dorm and toilets building. We found that it always rains in Sun Moon Lake and we were concerned about how people can go to the toilet if there is no shelter between these two buildings. Therefore, we proposed to Xie Ying Jun to build a shelter between those two buildings by creating a new roof using light-weight C-beam steel.
However, we did use a new technique different from Xie Ying Jun's technique, where we put the main incline column above the ground level connected with the concrete oor plate to avoid the water to touch the foundation. This shelter did not only act like a protection for rainwater, yet, it also created new space between the two buildings where the future user can use that space to be a smoking area, sitting area or hanging clothes area etc.

ANDHERI RAILWAY STATION MAIN ROAD RAILWAY FUTURE MRT
Our site is Andheri railway station, in an existing complicated urban system of Mumbai, India. Our group consists of 9 people, 5 students from KRVIA and 4 students from Tunghai University (including myself). Our group’s proposal is to create a new transportation hub around Andheri railway station according to the different types of transportation around the site, for example, railway, rikshaw, bus, private car and new metro line that are still under construction. In our design, we did remove some abandoned spaces and some old buildings that were unused to be new bus and rikshaw transitions and to provide a better visualization for users. Furthermore, we also proposed a new circulation for the bus system and provide/re-organize spaces for street vendors to solve some chaotic problems for pedestrians.

This year you are asked to explore how one could live in a POST+CAPITALIST CITY: the recent Wall Street protests and the associated developing movements around the world indicate the depth to which the inequality generated by the economic system and the demand for global change have penetrated the popular consciousness. However, whereas the intellectual debate focuses on possible alternative «systems», the question of the future of the urban condition in such a context is wide open. What if the change was tomorrow? What would be making? What would be the consequences of a new system for the way in which we use urban spaces? You may have an idea... ? Enter the competition and submit your visions.

Based on the world’s resource map we can find out the connection and flows even when there is an extreme shortage situation of these resources, and we can also see the fact of unequally distributed global resources.
BREAK THE BORDERS
GLOBAL TRANSIT SQUARE is a neutral organization based on the concept of global village and world resources sharing, in which we bring up an idea of a“new environment sharing mode” to the world. We have erased the borders and according to local resource conditions we have established 23 TRANSIT POSTS(supply/supply, demand/demand), so that every 3 posts equal a resources transit circle. In this way it lets the whole world resources be dispersed equally to every Transit post (according to resource conditions) to allow a continuous flow and transmission to local levels.

BETWEEN GAP AND DESIRE LOCATOIN : Taipei City, Taiwan (R.O.C.) TYPOLOGY : ARCHITECTURE YEAR 5 FINAL THESIS DESIGN
This project was based on the interest of open spaces within urban city. The photo was taken when I was a senior. This kind of scene was the result of, cities in Taiwan, built so quickly and so efficiently. All buildings had only been simply designed to match the demand of efficiency. What people truly need weren’t considered let along satisfied. To meet those needs, people started to set changes on the original buildings and all these individuals‘ acts were developed to what we see in the photo. These kinds of actions, being far beyond expectations, were the actual desires of human. The gap in the photo was a form of the unmet needs toward the original buildings. In our lives, architects work so hard to meet every demand that a building could possibly have, but there is always something more. And that leads us to a city filled with unanswered requests. But it was fascinating; things above designing consideration told me that the way we see architectural and cities needed to be changed. This form (gap) of space showed that architectures were built for people; therefore, people’s needs had to be taken care as a priority. Gaps that were created out of desires are living proves for a dynamic city. On one hand, these emotional desires with energy attached brought some kinds of disorder rules to the city, but on the other, making us realize there were still so many forgotten places and so many desires that had not been treated well. In my opinion, I think architectures should face this situation honestly. By understanding the connection between real demands of lives and architectural spaces, we could come to a brand new way to see what architectures in cities could be like.

Taipei Xinyi District-The skywalk plan was intentionally built to be a part of a complete open space that connected every buildings in the area. My proposal is trying to redesign the part of department stores by responding the statements I mentioned above about the new connection between city spaces and citizens’ needs. This design faces the combination of “desires” of Taipei city and in-between space. I tried to discuss how to rethink architecture inside out by using a new form of space that could discuss the different kinds of combinations between public/private spaces on the site that I picked.

MOTILE SAPCE 动﹒物 Co6 / TAIWAN AVANT-GARDE DOCUMENTA LOCATOIN : NATIONAL TAIWAN MUSEUM of Fine Arts TYPOLOGY : EXHIBITION YEAR 1 TEAM WORK
“Motile space” aims to create an impromptu spatial experience through a dynamic interaction between body and architecture. This architectural apparatus is made up of ten identical units, each consisting of a movable frame, a platform, a pneumatic cushion, and casters. When a visitor steps onto the platform, his/her weight will trigger the apparatus to move-the mechanism will convert the weight into energy that manifests in movements and formal changes. As the visitor passes from one uni to the others, his/her movement will generate further movements and changes in other units. Within, the frame and platform move in response to the visitor’s movement; without, the overall architectural from changes correspondingly. As a whole, the architecture promotes a sensorial experience beyond the visual perception of space.
