Background to this research....working in projects which prevented or reduced violence on a local level we were constantly challenged to demonstrate results, but in such a complex environment there was a gap between the evidence we were able to provide (often anecdotal or recording behaviour and attitude changes) and what convinced those most difficult to convince. The problem
CONVINCING ALL STAKEHOLDERS THAT WE HAVE DEMONSTRATED RESULTS.
Learning more about the gap by combining project management and stakeholder analysis. The research in brief! Stakeholder analysis shows us that the stakeholders who are in the top left . hand corner, are the most threat to a project because they are influential, but not supportive. By applying the stakeholder analysis to the project cycle, here below, we see that the large donors are in the top left hand corner.
The key finding is that when we get to
The Project Cycle overlaid on a
evaluation stage in a project, the donors
stakeholder analysis
are in the most crucial position...powerful and influential but not necessarily supportive. We should care and be concerned with giving them the information that they need in order to move them to the right so that they remain influential, but become more supportive and are less of a threat to the project
What this tells us... 1. That at the close and evaluation stage the large donors are in the top left hand corner of the diagram, which is typically the location of the stakeholders who are the most demanding. This may partly explain why there are so many problems associated with demonstrating results to them. They are very influential because they may be considering additional funding for the project or future funding for the implementing organisation, but if their previous experience

(either from interim reports or more broadly in the sector) is that results are not successfully demonstrated, then they will have a negative attitude. 2. How clearly influential the implementing agency was throughout the project. Even if the other stakeholders vary in their levels of influence, the implementing agency is constantly influencing in the demonstration of results. They collect, analyse and process the data, have decision-making power, and require the results to be demonstrated for the sake of both learning and future funding.
