Maui at The Dunes Open

was a hot, sunny broiler with intermittent breaks from the heat as an occasional cloud hovered over. The winds were howling for the second consecutive day, and with pressure bearing down on the competitors of the 2013 Maui Open at The Dunes, presented by Maui Toyota, all but one of the overnight leaders managed their emotions today well enough to outlast a hungry, hard-fighting group of fields. Maui boy Garrett Okamura, head PGA golf professional at The Dunes at Maui Lani Golf Course, was a gracious and most-deserving winner of the Championship flight.

With a tough fellow competitor, by the name of T.J. Kua, nipping at his heels from the get-go, Okamura stuck to his own game and even managed to smile despite the ups and downs that golf inevitably brings. His sportsmanship and class reflected the years Okamura spent as a product of the Maui Junior Golf Association, a group his father worked so hard for each and every year that his smiling boy was there. It was a dream come true and like so many other great golfers from this island who have won this title before him, Okamura has already proven he has the right stuff as not only a golfer, but as a human being.

Journal Marie and I and I suspect many many others here on the Valley Isle are extremely proud of Garrett Okamura. His championship victory is sweet, and as one who has spent many days following him around as a junior, it was a great and long-awaited moment to relish. Well done Garrett. Many others distinguished themselves and stories are yet to be told in the coming days. Overnight A-Flight leader, David Balmores, a great player who carded an enviable net 66 yesterday, showed a WD on the scoresheet. What happened, David? Tom Jezierney, Thomas Saka, and Allen Souza would all finish with scores of 144. But this writer is unsure what happened to settle the three-way tie! The king of Hawaii golf, Kevin Hayashi, and my chum Captain Kirk Nelson, couldn’t get ‘er done today in the Seniors Division. Elleair Maui G.C. PGA teaching professional, David Braxton’s, stellar even-par final round 72, added to his first-round 74, was just too much for the isle legends, as it was for pro Craig Furtado, whose 74 was one better

than his 3-over-par round yesterday. Tied for fourth was a wunderkind, of sorts: amateur ex-banker Glenn Yamasaki, a great guy and outstanding player whose 78 today tied him with the likes of pro Brad Bowen. Thank God I don’t predict things for a living, because the odds were once-again worthless in trying to guess today’s outcome, with a deserving amateur, Ed Beslow, outlasting the likes of pros Dean Prince and and Clif Council, and amateur Doug Stacy with scores of 72-77-149. I felt for Ed Angulo, who did so well with his first round, only to struggle today, in spite of his outstanding play of late. Also among the casualties was Clif Council, who just couldn’t bring his game with him today, a dilemma that haunts the likable Maui Golf Shop owner. But the name etched upon the perpetual Koa trophy comes from the Championship Flight, and while Garrett Continued on page 19

Opening festivities... Always eating. Glenn Yamasaki partakes in the pre-tournament ceremony. A fine player, Yamasaki’s top five finish was no surprise given the banker’s hours he keeps. (He can usually be found lurking around the practice tee at the King Kamehameha Golf Club, where he takes great pleasure in turning their lush grass tee into a divot patch.)

Managing the trades... Navigating the 190-yard par 3 17th is no bargain, especially when the trade winds are coming from the left, as amateur Ariel Hansen (pictured) knew while carding a first-round score of 84. He would recover well placing 8th overall among amateurs in the Championship flight after following up with a score of 72.

Okamura was battling T.J. Kua and Alex Chiarella, who could have easily won today, had a few hops gone his way, others were making their mark on the leaderboard…. The lady golfers, playing alongside the men from the back tees today, brought their A-games. Superstar amateur, Cassy Isagawa, tied the big boys for the low round of the day, and second lowest of the tournament, carding an even-par 72 in the gales. Cassy is about a foot shorter than most average male players, and yet she was able to knock it around this, Maui’s highest USGA slope-rated course from the tips, as well as the two other best players of the day: Shawn Lu and Ariel Hanson. Shayna Miyajima, a pro, also gave the boys a whupping today, breaking 80 and in brutal afternoon gales. Just amazing. On the flip-side there were some of the usual oddities, including dear boy Norm Guenther, publisher of Hawaii Golf News & Travel, the bi-monthly golf newspaper out of Mili-

lani. Pushing 80, Norm insists on entering pro fields when he can’t even break 100, and while I adore the man’s spunk and tenacity, I think it is beyond selfish to expect those who are paired with him, in this year’s case poor Dean Prince and Wendell Reinking, to endure him. In Prince’s case, he has either won, or had some shot at winning, for eons. To stick Norm with him was a downright bad call. Then there was the coaching. Now, I can see if you are playing on Tour and have a caddie who helps you, but parents who insist on being crutches and often obnoxious golf instructors, in the middle of a competitive event, is just terrible for the other competitors. I guess they call the father or coach a caddie, but with carts and no walking, who in Heaven’s name needs a nurse-maiding caddie in the first place!?! Continued on page 20

Norm Guenther strikes again... for a few holes, at least.

Playing all of The Dunes... Once Hawaii’s #1 junior player, Alex Chiarella, took the scenic route when he bogeyed 17 during his final round at the 2013 Maui Open; managing a 148 solo third-place finish in spite of his wayward play. The USD sophomore competed in seven tournaments during his freshman campaign (2012-13) and was USD’s top finisher at the NCAA Regionals in Tallahassee, with a 220 total (72-70-78), good for a tie for 42nd overall.

Everything & more... This Nathaniel Indica leaves nothing in the bag as he battles a tough Maui Lani venue that is known for its fear-inducing design.

On-course coaching should be banned IMHO, unless you are walking and have someone carrying your bag. This modern iteration of golf, where you excuse yourself as a caddie when you are really a coach is just a joke. Putting all human interference aside, the best players on Maui still struggled with the late Robin Nelson-designed linksland Dunes, with 10 rounds in the 90s shot by the Championship players. Way-fewer than half of the rounds played never broke 80. The course just has too many tricks up its sleeve, which is why those who live here and play it of20 20

ten have the edge, as was the case with Garrett Okamura. But sometimes knowing where the trouble is, or that expectation that you should win, can work against you. Being a champion means you have to block out all of those negative thoughts and focus on the here and the now, one shot at a time. That’s what Garrett did on his final approach shot from the fairway bunker on the final hole: he stuck to the basics and didn’t get ahead of himself. His wisdom paid off and he is a worthy champion. One down... After a riveting bogey save on the par 3 third, Dave came up short and was one down heading into the challenging par 5 18th. Just before launching his tee shot down the right side of this difficult test of golf, Dave did all he could to unravel the resolve of his fellow competitors—(l-r) Jaelin Ishikawa, Summer Wong, and Lana Calibuso-Kwee—and failed. The match would come down to a final putt. You can see a preview of this episode by scanning the photo above.

hen you consider all the great golf courses on the island of Maui, it is impossible to overlook the “granddaddy” of them all, the Royal Kā‘anapali Course. The Royal Kā‘anapali is one of only two courses in the state of Hawaii designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. (the other being the Mauna Kea Golf Club on the Big Island). This legendary course boasts decades of memorable moments in professional golf history. The challenge of the unpredictable West Maui trade winds and the huge rolling signature greens has lured many of the world’s all-time greatest golfers. Let’s join Kā‘anapali’s historical spectator gallery…. July, 1962 The Royal Kā‘anapali Course opened with 28

a bang when the original crooner, Bing Crosby, christened play with the first-ever Kā‘anapali foursome. Although we don’t have his scorecard, legend has it that he played a solid round with an equal mixture of birdies and bogies. July, 1963 Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf, an ABC television series, made its Hawaiian debut on the Royal Kā‘anapali Course. A matchplay series, this duel featured Dave Regan from the USA and Bob Charles from New Zealand. Regan birdied the first hole to take an early lead, but Charles rebounded with a beautiful round of 66 to easily outplay his opponent. She was about 150-yards away from the green, where golf ’s legends like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, and Gary Player had battled so courageously over the seven years the Champions Skins Game was here. Yet, in spite of its star-powered fame, the Gold Course is as fair and enjoyable for all golfers—pro or beginner—as her Blue and Emerald siblings. The Wailea Gold Course is often labeled as a “thinking player’s course,” with its 93 bunkers and great length, which stretches to 7,087 yards. he Wailea Gold Course features more bunkers than any other course on Maui. Its holes vary in length and elevation, and there is even the driveable 287-yard par 4 6th. The Gold opens quietly and finishes with a bang. Golfers like Wailea Golf Club member Jo Ann Patterson who skip the trip to the practice tee and simply walk up to the first tee and hit, are refreshingly surprised to find the Gold opens with a very welcoming first hole: “Number one is a great hole to start on, even though you haven’t gotten warmed up yet, because of the length,” she said. “For my handicap, it’s a great hole to start on.” Her co-member and thrice-weekly playing companion, Dixie McCarthy, points out: “I love

I think we have ninety-six sand traps here.” She’s close: there are actually 93, and all immaculately maintained, as is everything here. “The par 3s here are a lot of fun. We have really fine fairways... they’re wide and in great shape. I think number 18 is really fun too because you have bushes in front of you, and an obstacle that you have to really swing hard at to get across,” Dixie said. Here in Wailea we’ve got calm weather, we’ve got the least amount of rain, and the most sunshinefilled days of anyplace in the state of Hawaii.

W

hile her two younger siblings have garnered quite a bit of praise in recent years, it is the Wailea Old Blue Golf Course that is the venue to first put Wailea on the world map as a top golf destination. “Old Blue first opened way back in 1972,” course general manager Barry Helle explains, “and when it did it was the first thing ever built here in Wailea, before any homes, condominiums or hotels. It was just this lonely golf course out on the sunny side of Maui, and for the most part except for a few tweaks and enhancements the Old Blue is exactly the same as it was back in the early seventies.” If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.... Such is the case when you consider Wailea’s secret ingredients, as Barry describes: “Nice wide fairways, lush tropical foliage and of course our beautiful views. Views of the ocean, the coastline of Maui and our neighboring islands here off the shoreline on the south side of Maui.” When you are on vacation, the last thing you need in your life is more stress, and Wailea’s Old Blue Golf Course has something few courses on 38

Maui can truly offer: an absolute zero fear factor. Course architect Arthur Jack Snyder designed Old Blue with one thing in mind: to make the course fun. “This is a scorer’s paradise,” Chris Amanini, Wailea’s assistant golf professional at the Old Blue course told us. “There’s three holes out here that are very good for scoring,” he points out, with each leaving you with a “wedge in hand,” and staring at “a big green, nice and flat,” the pro told us. Old Blue’s holes offer optimum scoring lengths, subtle hole routings, and a wee bit of elevation change just to shake it up a little. The greens feature wide swaths of undulation along ridges and mounds, connecting reasonable tiers that are very approachable, and allow for a roll that is true and with just the right amount of speed. Jack Snyder made Old Blue such that golfers could score well, but they’d still have to earn those Download Shortcut app for free,

pars and birdies along the way. And while the layout and the meticulous grooming, and the storied LPGA Tour history are all part of its charm and lore, Barry points out the one key facet that separates Wailea from all others: “You know Wailea’s great golf isn’t the only reason to choose to play here,” he begins. “Hawaii’s got great weather—no doubt about it—but trust me: some places are better than others. The weather in Hawaii is dictated by the northeast tradewinds, and Wailea is right on the southwest side of Mount Haleakala, our 10,000-foot mountain that dominates the island of Maui. Here in Wailea we’ve got calm weather, we’ve got the least amount of rain, and the most sunshine-filled days of anyplace in the state of Hawaii. So choose Wailea... we’ve got great golf and the best weather on the planet right here waiting for you.”

hile we can tell you that the Old Blue difference, and it’s hard to pin down exactly how Jack Snyder did it, is the missing intimidation factor, there’s nothing like hearing it from real people, like Canadian tourist Pavla Mascova, who we found on the 12th tee with her newborn baby girl, Madeleine, and Milos—her official “daddy, caddie, and nanny” “I’m just starting to play golf,” Pavla told us, “so it’s really fun and I’m improving on every hole,” she said, adding: “The fairways are amazing. They are really wide, and really fun, and it’s really good for a beginner to play here. It’s really fun—no stress—it’s really good.” Xin-Liu Yao, from Seattle, joined the conversation when he caught up to Pavla on 12. “This was actually a birthday present from my wife. She did a bunch of research online and found that Wailea Old Blue was a really good course, so she decided to book a tee time here,” he said.

Milos said of the scenery: “Gorgeous. You can actually see Molokini behind us,” he said, adding: “It’s beautiful here.” Now, Xin-Liu struck us to be a fairly big golf fan, but perhaps unable to play as often as he’d like: “I haven’t golfed in a while,” he began, “It’s fairly wide-open... there haven’t been too many gotchas except for the second hole, where I lost a couple balls,” he said, “so it’s taken a little bit of time to shake all the rust off.” Then added: “It’s lovely out here, and I can’t think of a better place to go golfing.” Pavla and Xin-Liu could have played golf elsewhere, but odds are they might have found themselves struggling, maybe even terrified on another course’s first tee. But not out here. That day, they were able to just look down the fairway and let go. That’s what all of us want on our vacations, isn’t it?

It’s a little hard to keep your attention on the golf part of it because of the great scenery that we have around here.

— Rusty Hathaway, PGA, Head Golf Professional

T

he Emerald course is an enchanting golf experience from start to finish. If the Wizard of Oz were on Maui, you’d find him at the end of Wailea’s Emerald fairways. It’s that stunning. Rusty Hathaway, Wailea Golf Club’s head golf professional, sizes it all up rather succinctly: “It’s a little hard to keep your attention on the golf,” the affable Wailea veteran confides in a calm voice, “because of the great scenery that we have around here.” We are shooting his video clip on the right side of the Emerald course’s 380-yard par 4 opening hole, and it is tough to disagree with his assessment—wall-towall ocean views; tropical flora and fauna everywhere; lava rock walls and outcroppings surrounding everything... paradise found, it indeed is. But Rusty was all business too, reminding us that Wailea has indeed three golf courses—54-holes— more than any other resort in Hawaii, adding that all of them: “suit any caliber of golfer that

you can imagine, from low-handicappers to highhandicappers.” Once again, Rusty’s right. When you stand on the first tee at the Wailea Emerald Course, instead of 6,825 yards of terror, you are looking at a golf hole that wants to usher your golf ball toward the center and coax it right on down to the hole. The green appears perched at the end of the immense green velvet funnel before you. ‘Can I really roll my ball into the hole from here?’ we might ask ourselves. Of course you can. Go for it! The Emerald’s plush fairways and flowery tees are indeed beautiful distractions, and like the Gold course, it too has four to six sets of tees on every hole. Thus, on both venues, golfers seeking the zealous and strapping test need only to hit first— from as far back as possible—to feel the Emerald’s bite. For those whose time in paradise is reserved solely for leisure, then playing from the forward tees reveals an Emerald course that is a kinder, gentler venue.

laying on Wailea’s Emerald golf course transports the guest into a living tapestry of color, where you are part of it all—vistas that curve forever, and rows and rows of flora and deep green. Birds and the click of the ball off your fellow golfer’s clubface are the only sounds you hear. Plumeria and bougainvillea fill the air, ripe with a faint tropical cologne. We ran into a threesome just finishing their last hole of the day on the Emerald course, and all were living the dream.... “The course is fantastic,” Roger Sample (pictured left) told us. “The weather’s beautiful, we had a great day today”, the Coloradan said. “It’s very women-friendly,” Susie said, in following her husband’s point, adding that the Emerald had “beautiful views.” Dean Roosdahl, a single who joined Roger and Susie, echoes the Samples, who also own a home in Wailea: The Emerald course “is very player-friendly,” Dean agreed, expressing that he thought the scenery was “beautiful,”

that the weather was “fantastic,” and how you just “can’t complain,” because it doesn’t get “much better than this.” “Our good friend Dean, from Vancouver, had many birdies,” Roger announced. “He had an eagle on the last hole, and he shot a 68... had a record round. It was fantastic”, said Roger. “We all had birdies,” Dean remarked, “Our little carts were chirping quite a bit.” The Canadian then explained how his career round of 68 ended with that eagle on the Emerald Course: “I swung really hard with my eyes closed, and then I asked for a good read from my friend here, Roger.” Dean then described how Roger “chipped his within about six inches” and how his own ball “just found a luckier path and went in.” “Yeah, we had a great day... enjoyed it immensely. The greens are fantastic, the whole golf course is fantastic. The people here are wonderful. They treat us like kamaainas,” said a smiling Roger.

Golf pros migrated to Hawai‘i in search of work at the very best resorts, and Maui Golf Shop owner Clif Council (pictured) was among them.

Hawaiian Sanctuary At the same time golf was ablaze, the endemic Hawai‘ian Coot (pictured below off the 18th fairway of the Royal Kā‘anapali golf course) was added to the endangered species list in 1970, yet has always found sanctuary at the seaside Kā‘anapali Golf Courses, where pristine saline ponds provide a perfect safe haven for the rare bird.

Royal Renovation

Photo: John Byrne

As a part of Kā‘anapali’s transformation, the great isle course architect Robin Nelson did a “gentle nip and tuck” when he updated the Royal Kā‘anapali Course's original Robert Trent Jones, Sr. design— reviving its bunkers, runway tees, and sloped greens. The end-result improves playability, and breathes new life into Jones’ classic design. Nelson tackled the Kai course by revamping it in every way: with all-new tees, redesigned green complexes, and reshaped bunkers. Both courses now feature Tif-419 Bermuda grass on their tees, fairways, and roughs, and their putting surfaces now use the premium turf grass, TifEagle.

In 2007, Billy Casper Golf, Kā‘anapali Golf Courses’ management company, unveils a new logo, with proper diacritical marks, as a part of the major updating of the brand. The golf courses, pro shop, driving range, carts, uniforms, and even new perspectives were fine tuned for new opportunities on the horizon. Beginning in 1987, with the inaugural GTE Kā‘anapali Classic, Kā‘anapali Golf Courses became known as the “Hawai‘ian Home of the Senior PGA Tour.” But another decade passed before Hale Irwin began his record 6 victories, including his streak of five straight wins in a row (20002005), when he won the Hyatt-Regency Download Shortcut app for free,

Maui Kā‘anapali Classic in 1997. Then Maui News photographer Andrew Jacoby captured this shot of Hale while en route to that first victory. Fred Couples made his Champions Tour debut at the 2010 Kā‘anapali Champions Skins Game and it apparently kick started a great year for him. He, and playing partner Nick Price not only earned 3 skins and $190,000 in the event, but Couples would go on to win three starts in a row, and at press time, leads the Champions Tour money list.

Nicklaus to either win, or finish second, in four of the last five Wendy's Champions Skins Games at Kā‘anapali—but alone when he edged Fred Couples by a shot the next week with a birdie on the 72nd hole at Hualālai. Watson is even defying his age; at nearly 60 years old, and 26 years after his last major victory, he led much of the 2009 Open Championship (though he eventually lost in a four-hole playoff).

You know, from the minute I first got off the plane and came to Elleair, I was dazzled by the aloha and beauty of this island and in particular, of this 18hole championship golf course. My first-impression as I drove in was ‘wow, check this place out’. There was an inviting stone entry, international flags wavering in the breeze, and a smiling face awaiting me as I pulled up to drop off my golf bag. The parking here is fabulous and close to both the lighted range, with its grass tees, as well as the plantation-style clubhouse, with pro shop and Kono’s on the Green all right there. Inside, it was cool and bright and I could see the first hole, just stunning with that majestic fairway working its way up to the green, with Mt. Haleakala’s

Years later, the Daio Paper Company of Japan, purchased the golf course and since that time, Elleair has been given the royal treatment, with investments rolling in non-stop to improve every facet of the operation. Named after one of the parent company’s top brands, Elleair is proprietarily spelled with a lower-case “e.” It’s French and means “fairy of the wind,” and as most locals here know, the afternoons are normally breezy, so the name is fitting. is a big fan of Shayna’s and was instrumental in ensuring she was a part of this feature.) The first hole at Elleair is a refreshing start. Shayna points out that the fairway is wide, and the green is reasonably large. She teed off from the elevated set of (four) tees, playing down-and-then-uphill into a breeze all of the hole’s 449 yards. Before she struck her drive, she noted that the hole points easterly toward the southern foothills of Haleakalā, and if one looks closely they will see Molokini peeking through the kiawe trees bordering the course off to the right. It is a great way to start a round of golf, and if you watch her coverage you’ll find out how she did—this hole ain’t no gimme par, sports fans…. Elleair has so many good holes, and is so well routed, that it is just a lot of fun to play, even when there is an afternoon breeze (mornings are much quieter and are usually quite calm). The course is designed to reduce the effect of any trade winds when they do blow. On the front nine, the trade winds are at the golfer’s back or side on five holes. The back nine features only two holes that play directly into the trade winds: the par 4 10th, and the par 4 11th. The final seven holes play either with a helping wind or with a crosswind and are where the scoring is at its best. We won’t spoil it for those of you who take advantage of this story’s interactive video features, but Shayna’s back nine exhibition was memorable. The par 5s at Elleair are all reachable in two shots, even No. 8 on the front side, where the wind is hurting. The key to all four of these par 5s is the drive. No. 18 was revamped to give golfers a better chance of hitting the green on the second shot. It’s a very good birdie hole and we encourage you to see what happened when Shayna played her third shot here. Elleair’s par 4s are a mixture of doglegs and straight holes with plenty of undulation and elevation change. The fairways are often quite wide, which is good for the

snowbird. Water comes into play off the tee on five holes, but only the sixth, ninth, and 15th have water staring the golfer in the face on one or both sides of the fairway. While there is plenty of challenges, Shayna shows us that Elleair rewards the golfer who keeps the ball in play and can chip and putt. That is what makes Elleair so much fun. It’s a fair test of golf, but with many scoring opportunities to recover from those ‘others’ everyone has on their scorecard. While Elleair has been lovingly updated, and the total package has improved immensely, Joe at Paradigm Golf Group explains that they are hardly resting on their laurels: “We have a lot of areas where we can see the sun shine even brighter,” he told us. “We may not be the biggest, but we offer a great value for the money, and are the friendliest,” he grins. Story & PHOTOGRAHY by JOHN BYRNE

We Are Kā‘anapali There's more to Kā‘anapali than beautiful golf holes, lush fairways and gorgeous views... It's the people who make the place.

K

ā‘anapali Golf Courses have experienced an amazing transformation over the last decade, and while the resort's turfgrasses, bunkers, greens, tees, and fairways may have been renovated or renewed in recent times, it's the people behind the illustrious name who make Kā‘anapali what it is today and every day.… Someone has to guide the canoe, and in Kā‘anapali's case it is Ed Kageyama, general

manager of Kā‘anapali Golf Courses, who together with the mainland management company, Billy Casper Golf, has navigated Kā‘anapali through a $13 million renewal. So impressive were Kageyama's efforts that Golf Inc. magazine just named him as one of the “Most Innovative People in Golf.” This distinction is awarded to only 18 industry professionals worldwide, so we'd have to say the man at the helm is doing pretty well.

“Ed Kageyama has done a tremendous job transforming Kā‘anapali, and his ability to innovate represents the best of what Billy Casper Golf achieves at our courses,” says Peter Hill, Chairman and CEO of BCG. “It’s a privilege for Billy Casper Golf that Ed leads one of the portfolio’s crown-jewel properties, and the Golf Inc. recognition makes it even more rewarding.” The soft-spoken 22-year veteran of Hawaii’s golf industry is one of the state’s leading PGA members—having just been named the Aloha Section PGA Golf Professional of the Year. Golf Inc. describes such innovative people as Ed as having “creative minds," and being "risk takers and cutting-edge heroes who improve the golf industry through new ideas, fearless moxie, and a love of the game.” That's some pretty impressive stuff, but then when we look at what he has done, who are we to argue? Innovating All but Tradition People are the one resource Ed Kageyama hasn't replaced in a Kā‘anapali transformation that has brought back the sparkle in the resort's 36-hole crown jewels. His "Golf My Way" program lets you play your 18 holes whenever you can fit it in (nine holes before dinner, four holes after a swim, another five before brunch). Kā‘anapali's "FIT Club" lets you walk and play after work, everyday, so you get exercise and stay close to the game. He pioneered the "Kids Play for Free" program in the early 2000s, and took it a step further with their Keiki tees— from 100- to 150-yards out—on every Kā‘anapali golf hole to encourage more family play. It's worked and no one else is doing it, so yeah, we'd say Ed Kageyama is pretty darn "innovative."

T

he Dunes at Maui Lani Golf Course is a unique Hawai‘ian links. No other golf course in Hawai‘i is quite like it, which may explain why Golf Digest named it among the four “Best-Kept Secret Golf Courses in America.” But what is it that makes this course so unique? Is it the design? Is it the site? Topography? Playability? Condition? Actually, it’s all of that and more. The Dunes is built on ancient sand dunes. It was designed and routed to take full advantage of the site’s unique topography. The hybrid Bermuda turfgrasses and course maintenance are such that the playability rivals that of Hawai‘i’s top resorts. In fact, The Dunes is consistently ranked by Golfweek as Maui’s No. 2 venue, following only the Plantation Course at Kapalua. Yes, it’s unique. Course architect Robin Nelson knew he had a

special site when he first saw the Maui Lani terrain and described it as a “once-in-a-lifetime” course design opportunity. It was 1998, and the return to classic golf course architecture hadn’t quite taken hold. Robin flew out to Ireland’s southwest coast just to see the classic links courses himself. Then he went to work on The Dunes. When it opened, Robin’s authentic (revetted sod) pot bunkers and epic routing of The Dunes at Maui Lani Golf Course were immediately hailed by the national media. Never before had a daily-fee golf course in Hawaii gotten so much attention. Links magazine, Golf Digest, Golf magazine, T+L Golf, Golfweek, and newspapers locally and abroad bestowed high rankings and words of praise on The Dunes. Visitors and residents followed suit as well and have made The Dunes a staple in their golfing diets. Continued on page 67

So what is so special about a links course anyway? What is the big deal about dunes? Why should you care? Golf course architects move mountains to emulate what The Dunes does naturally. They go to great lengths, spend tens of millions of dollars, and never really touch the qualities that can be found on a good natural site. Here in Hawaii, courses are literally carved out of lava. They are manmade works of course architecture that are 72

stunning but hardly shaped by nature. The Dunes at Maui Lani Golf Course is, and with very little conventional course design implementation, a true classic links. It is shaped by wind, and the holes follow that shape. When you play your shots, the lengths and the angles fall into place. They are manageable, not requiring absurd amounts of power, and in fact respond better to nuance and touch. A little more club, a softer swing to take away the spin, and you work less while accomplishing more. The Dunes’ slogan, “Golf the way it was meant to be played, at a price for golf that was meant to be paid,” strives to encapsulate it all in one line. They’ve got the playability part right, for sure.

It is common for each golf course to use multiple sets of tees in order to vary distance and thus accommodate all golfers. The reality is often different when playing. The Dunes at Maui Lani’s four tees are designed to accomplish the same thing, but numbers don’t lie, and the USGA’s Course and Slope Rating system is revealing. It tells us, based on almost scientific criteria, how hard courses are for the bogey golfer and for the scratch golfer. Some golf courses are hard. No matter what tees you play from, they are just hard. The USGA rates The Dunes as Maui’s most challenging golf course for the bogey golfer, who plays from the back or middle tees, and the same for the scratch player, who plays from the midDownload Shortcut app for free,

dle tees. From the back tees, scratch golfers will find The Dunes is Maui’s 4th most challenging. But when players move forward, they play a wholly different venue. From the forward tees, lady bogey golfers will find The Dunes’ USGA Slope Rating falls right in the middle of the 14-course Maui pack, hitting the median 120 rating on the mark. Senior men and juniors will also find The Dunes is far more playable. From the forward tees, The Dunes is Maui’s third-most-playable venue. Most Hawaiian courses are modern designs that exact a more target-oriented style of play. You have to ‘hit’ the fairway, and greens often have ‘forced carries.’ Once again, the classic and minimalistic design of The Dunes plays dif-

ferently. You can literally putt your tee shots down fairways. Every green has an opening. There is always a place to bail out and play safe. You’ve got options at The Dunes. Maui has a rich variety to choose from when it comes to golf, but only The Dunes can lay claim to being an authentic Hawaiian links. course architecture, and collaboration between Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore. Designed for the trade winds, the Plantation Course features a mix of long and short holes that allow plenty of room for error, and often provide for generous roll. Most of its greens have openings that allow for high handicappers to run their shots up to the hole, but there are a few places where a carry is required, such as on the par 3 8th, which features a large ravine. Both the front and back nines at the Kapalua Plantation Course have holes that command striking views of the sea. The course is routed so that golfers can stop at the clubhouse for refreshments between nines as well. The Plantation Course at Kapalua was aptly named when it was originally surrounded by a working pineapple plantation. Now, upscale residences encircle many of its fairways. Aloha. I’m Scott Carroll of Troon Golf, head golf professional at Kapalua’s Plantation Golf Course. It is never boring here at Kapalua, and the Plantation Course steps it up a notch with its massive, curving, sloping fairways and enormous golf holes that were designed for our tropical trade winds. In fact, the layout is made for golf in paradise. How often do you play a 500-yard par 4 that you need to strike 3-metal of a hybrid off the tee on? Where on earth can you get home in two shots on a 660-plus-yard par 5 that was once the PGA Tour’s longest hole? Only on the Plantation Course at Kapalua! Here at the Plantation Course, our fairways get to be as much as 150-yards wide, so you’d better head over to see the boys at the Academy if you can’t keep it on the short grass here! The views on the Plantation Course are hard to beat. You can see the ocean from almost all of our tees, fairways, and greens. The course is set high up on the hills making for the most unobstructed panoramas imaginable, with whales breaching, and storms at sea while the sun is overhead, drenching the course’s emerald fairways with light. Come and play the Plantation Course as soon as you can. You’ll be glad you did!

Bay Course Aloha. I’m Ben Hongo of Troon Golf, head teaching professional at the Kapalua Golf Academy. While I spend much of my time teaching visitors like you a thing or two about the game at our Academy, you’ll also see me on the course with my students. It’s all part of our myriad learning programs that are designed to produce quick and lasting results. The Bay Course—which Arnold Palmer and Francis Duane designed in 1975 for Kapalua as the centerpiece of the resort— is where I’m found the most. It was built in an era when Hawai‘i was still finding its roots as a major golf destination. It is everything that a resort course should be: not too tough, but not too easy either. While Kapalua is most recently associated with the PGA Tour in that the resort has hosted the TOC since 1999, what many don’t know is that from 1982 until 1997, Kapalua had already established a long relationship with professional golf at the season’s end, with its ‘unofficial’ PGA Tour event: the Lincoln-Mercury Kapalua International—a Mark Rolfing invention—on the Bay Course. A decade later it hosted the Kapalua LPGA Classic, in 2008. A public course with the “wow” factor...The wow being...”Wow, I can’t believe how tough that course is!” The first three holes lull you to sleep in thinking that this course is a breeze, but then hold on to your hat! Elevation changes, contoured fairways, water, slick greens and the wind will challenge every shot. The par 5 4th hole, the par 4 10th and the par 5 18th are some of the toughest holes on the island. I dare you to two-putt the 4th hole—it’s not called the “Augusta Green” for nothing.

Course Review Scratch golfers playing from the tips are in store for a lot of fun as this has Maui’s second highest USGA Course Rating. Staying on the Black tees, bogey golfers who boldly go where no bogey golfer should ever go (on this course) will find the cards are stacked against them as the Dunes also has the highest, USGA Slope Rating of all the courses on Maui. Moving back to the Blue (whites comparatively speaking) the bogey golfer is still going to have his or hands full: from these tees it’s also Maui’s toughest venue. But forward-thinking golfers who play the Red tees (men or women) will experience a different Dunes: one that is easier on the ego, with Slope Ratings near the bottom of the charts. The Dunes doesn’t play long. Even when the wind kicks it doesn’t play long. There’s plenty of roll, and all tee shots play level or downhill. Winds can blow, making the somewhat narrow fairways seem tighter. Roughs are not penal, but bunkers are, and are aplenty. The one sharp dogleg favors the fade. Topography is hilly as the course is built on dunes formed by the receding seas eons ago. The greens are smaller targets that can be hard to hold, and hole locations can be brutal. Water comes into play on three holes. Easy to underestimate this course.

Dave’s Take: The Royal and Ancient at St. Andrews has nothing on this course. Waiehu is the oldest public course on Maui, and it’s the best value (and the only course where you don’t have to take a cart!). There are more ocean holes on Waiehu than any other course on the island. Truly unique in its layout, the front 9 is links style along the ocean, while the back nine takes you up into the rolling hillside. When the wind off the ocean is howling, the par 3, 5th hole and par 4 6th hole are as tough as anything at Pebble Beach.

For scratch golfers Waiehu is a breeze and has been the site of the Men’s USGA Publinx Qualifier on many occasions. This is the easiest course on Maui for bogey golfers. Ladies will find more challenge here than on four other Maui courses. Forward-thinking golfers who play the red tees will find it is Maui’s third easiest. The effective playing length at Waiehu is shortened by the considerable roll the fairways provide on this authentic links. Wind is a big factor but doesn’t hurt too much because it comes in from the side, and most of the course’s holes route parallel to the sea. The front plays mostly level with the exception of one par 3, which plays downhill. The back rolls more with holes playing in the direction of all four cardinal points of the compass—a hallmark of a good layout. Waiehu is the only course with only three par 4s on its front nine. The fairways are wide and easy-to-hit targets. Roughs are cut very short. The few doglegs favor a fade. The fairways provide for an even lie or stance on all but two or three holes. The green sizes are small and protected by shallow bunkers. There is only one fairway bunker on the entire golf course. Hole locations are accessible without risk. Water comes into play on barely two holes. There are no ravines or gulches to carry. Zero intimidation here. This is all about golfing by the sea.

Golf Course Pro Shop: (808) 242-GOLF (4653) Dave’s Take:

Another one of Maui’s many unique, affordable, challenging public courses. Another wind course (as most are on Maui) cut out of the Central Maui hillside. It gives you a lot of sloping fairways and a constant 10-15 mile/hour wind that will absolutely play havoc with your shots. All of the par 5s are reachable in two if you are bold and precise enough with fairway woods. Depending on the wind conditions, the downhill, par 3, 13th hole can play anywhere from sand wedge to 5 iron—good luck figuring that out!

Course Review: For scratch golfers, playing from the tips is a breeze at only 6,500 yards, which is why it is rated as the island’s 5th easiest. Bogey golfers playing from the ‘whites’ are experiencing the Maui median USGA Slope Rating; the course is halfway between the most and least difficult we have. Not so for lady bogey golfers who play the red tees: it is the 2nd most difficult for them on Maui. Length is short and it effectively plays that way. Roll is ample with many downhill tee shots. Elevation changes and strong winds are regular staples, and while the fairways seem wide, there is minimal rough to save your ball from running into a kiawe, which borders the entire course. Holes are designed with wind in mind. Most holes play straight or bend only slightly. The topography is very hilly, and an uneven lie or stance is likely on nearly half the holes. Bunkers in fairways are less penal obstacles on the par 4s than they are on the par 5s. The greens are smaller targets than usual and deep bunkers guard them. Hole locations on the greens are often set on tiers but rarely in radical locations. Water comes into play on two holes. Putting is straightforward in that there are no extremes. Golfers shouldn’t be intimidated. This golf course is very fair.

For the scratch golfer who plays here from the tips, look out: this has Maui’s highest USGA Course Rating at 75.7. Bogey golfers who play the Ke’oke’o (white) tees will fare far better with Maui’s 5th-to-last USGA Slope Rating. Forward-thinking golfers who play the red (Ula’ula) tees will find it is tough, as Maui’s 3rd highest Slope. Not overly long, but the 214-yard average par 3 length ranks No.1. Most holes are level or actually play downhill and feature lots of roll. The normally stiff trade winds are a big factor. The fairways are large targets and roughs are cut reasonably short, but not the shortest by any means. The course features many doglegs as holes hug the terrain, which tends to be hilly and features numerous elevated greens. Bunkers in fairways and by greens are deep, with often high lips. The stance and lie in the fairways is usually level. The green sizes are big and as targets are very manageable, but fast and undulating. Holes are often cut on ledges or behind forboding bunkers, demanding accuracy off the tee. Water comes into play on five holes.

Golf Club Pro Shop: (808) 874-0777 Dave’s Take:

Tired of resort course prices but still want a challenge? Put Elleair on your list. One of the best, reasonably priced, public courses on the island. But don’t think this course is a stroll in the park. Some of the tightest par 4s will test your skill and patience. If you can get through 5, 6 and 9 on the front without ‘Tin Cupping’ it, you have a chance for a decent round. The back side provides much needed relief with 13 and 18 being very birdieable (a new word) par 5s. But look out for the 15th hole... you need to thread a tee ball between two lakes to have a decent second shot. I usually just duck-hook it into the 16th fairway and play it from there; somewhat unconventional but effective—at times!

Course Review: Elleair Maui Golf Club offers terrific mountain and ocean views and has benefitted from a renovation project that updated hole designs, replaced irrigation systems, improved the turfgrasses, and re-built all of the bunkers. This 18-hole 6,801-yard par-71 championship golf course was designed by Canadian course architect Bill Newis. Most holes feature wide fairways, and a mixture of long and short par-4s. Recent design changes made holes 1, 4, 7, 10, 17 & 18 much more forgiving. The 18th hole, a par-5 with a notoriously hard green to hit in two, was redesigned to allow good second shots to roll onto the green making for real eagle possibilities. Elleair has Maui’s better-maintained bunkers. Most drives call for either a fade or a draw, but straight hitters will be rewarded on some of the tighter driving holes, like Nos 2, 5, 6, and 14. Elleair’s four par 3s face every cardinal point on the compass, and are level. Its fairways are Tif-419, and the average-sized undulating greens are Tifdwarf. Carts have GPS. There is a lighted driving range with grass tees and many popular pros teaching, as well as the clubmaker’s shop, Keith Anderson, called: South Maui Golf & Repair. James Schwarz is the director of golf at Elleair.

Hole No. 8 is one of my favorites—420 yards, trees left, bunker right, second shot to a long elevated green—4 is a real good score here. For scratch golfers Wailea Old Blue is Maui’s 4th easiest from the tips. Bogey golfers playing from the ‘whites’ will score better here than even on the Emerald, with the USGA rating it as Maui’s 3rd easiest from the whites. Forward-thinking golfers who play the red tees will find it is also Maui’s 3rd easiest, and for ladies it is just a paltry two-tenths of a shot stronger than the Emerald. The Old Blue effectively plays to its shortish length. There are about as many uphill shots as there are downhill ones. Roll is a little less extreme, but several holes do have slopes that run away from where you want to be. Roughs are cut short and allow for recovery, although many greens are narrow targets and can be tricky to hit or hold from the short side. The few sharp doglegs favor mostly the draw, although a fade is the shot off several tees. The Blue’s topography is hilly with fairways often lower than the tees and greens, except on two of the reachable par 5s. Several holes may feature a side-, up-, or downhill lie or stance depending on where you place your drives. The green sizes are large and hold very well. Most are bunkered to the sides more than in front. Hole locations are mostly level. Fear isn’t an emotion you will feel much of on the Blue.

Tee Times/Pro Shop: (808) 875-7450 Dave’s Take: An easier version of the Gold with all the same great qualities. The higher handicapper will appreciate the shorter length and the sloping fairways that will forgive your errant tee shots. Three of the par 3s on this course are less than 120 yards from the white tees but require a precise short iron to have a chance at birdie. I also like finishing a round on a high note...The 18th hole is a friendly par 5 that should end your day with a smile.

Course Review: The way Robert Trent Jones II designed the Emerald is clever. It has respectable length, at 6,801 yards, yet plays among the easiest on Maui. Why? Jones pads the three-shot par 5s with extra yardage and shortened the average lengths of the par 4s and 3s. Then he made virtually every tee shot play either downhill or level. The result is a course that is easier but still offers plenty of variety and length. Scratch golfers will find the Emerald is Maui’s 6th most playable venue for them—an ego-booster for sure. Bogey golfers will love it even more, as the USGA slope rating team here in Hawaii ranks this course as the 4th easiest here. From the forward tees the Emerald is the 2nd easiest on Maui. Tee shots get plenty of roll. There is little if any wind. Keeping the ball in play is easier because many fairways run parallel, and are wide. Roughs are cut short and allow for recovery. Few sharp doglegs exist. Topography is hilly and felt mostly on the approach. The green sizes are varied and hold well. Most are average in size and accept running shots. Water comes into play on the side of the 10th and 17th, which share Maui’s only double green. The Wailea Emerald Course is where to go if a good score in the tropics is desired.

Wailea

gold course

Tee Times/Pro Shop: (808) 875-7450 Dave’s Take: Resort golf at its finest, with a twist. The twist being the rolling, undulating fairways that add to the challenge of this course. If you don’t like to contend with the elements...then play golf in Wailea. However, you will have no one to blame but yourself if the course takes you to your knees. The views on this course are spectacular and its condition impeccable. Look out for the lava rock waste areas. If your ball goes in and you find it, it will look like it came out of a Vegematic!

Course Review: For scratch golfers the Gold is Maui’s second longest course from the tips. Bogey golfers aren’t as affected by the yardage, as the Gold is ranked 8th from the ‘whites’. Forwardthinking golfers who play the Gold’s red tees will find it is 4th in length on Maui. Roll is a factor and is often offset by elevation, and winds are (for the most part) barely noticeable. But despite its length, the Gold doesn’t play as long as windier courses. Keeping the ball in play is essential on the Gold, as lava and kiawe trees border all fairways, which are wide and manageable targets. Roughs are cut short and allow for recovery. The few sharp doglegs on the Gold favor mostly the draw. Topography is hilly on the Gold. You can hit the fairways, and when you are precise, you will have an even lie or stance. The green sizes are mostly large and undulating but hold well. Hole locations can impact putting here. The Gold has the most bunkers (93) of any isle venue. While this may sound horrible, the Gold is not a very hard golf course by any means. Water comes into play only once, and can be avoided altogether. Golfers shouldn’t be intimidated by the Gold course. Robert Trent Jones II designed the Wailea Gold Course with the resort guest in mind.

Course Review: This is the third-ranked course for scratch golfers playing from the tips. Bogey golfers playing from the resort tees will find this is harder than any course on Maui. Not so for ladies playing up front, where it ranks T4. The climate at Koele is so cool, and both native and introduced flora thrive in abundance. This is noticeable from the get-go as the front nine weaves through stands of native koa and dense kiawe. Fog can roll in at a moment’s notice especially on the course’s back nine, which routes upward through fairways lined by tall columns of Cook pines and massive eucalyptus. The course’s rolling landscape is more level on the front, then climbs and drops more radically on the back. The topography is a mix of old pineapple fields, gorges, and mountain terrain, and depending on the hole and its shape, roll can help, but it plays to its full yardage. Elevation is felt mostly on the back nine, and most notably on famed par 4 17th. Fairways are ample targets, and the greens hold, have lots of undulation, and because they are bent, can fool you if you are used to Bermuda grass. This is a memorable course that is worth your money.

CHALLENGE

Tees Nicklaus Gold Blue White Red

at MANELE

Tee Times/Pro Shop: (808) 565-4000 Course Review: There’s little to compare on Maui to what you’ll find on this golf course. Our statistics just don’t equate. For scratch golfers the challenge of the Challenge at Manele comes into play when the forced carries over the ocean on the 12th and 17th holes make your knuckles white. If those holes don’t get you, the killer views will. Rarely do many golfers, even the really good ones, play so many holes where the eye candy is non-stop. Despite its length, the roll is more than ample here given the many elevation changes, and how the design makes use of winds that are gusty and often stronger as the day warms up. Because the holes here don’t run parallel like on more crowded venues, fairway targets seem to get smaller as visually it seems like the bail-out zones are no mas. Jack just gives you a lot of ocean, kiawe, and lava to hunt in for your ball when you go astray. In truth, most of the fairways are wide and manageable targets. Roughs are cut short and allow for recovery. Two out of three sharp doglegs actually play to a draw, and the greens are big targets with bunkers that allow for tough hole placements. The topography is very hilly for a seaside course, so be prepared for a ride. The greens hold and are not too steep in undulation, but grainy. 92

BAY COURSE KAPALUA

General Info Tees Blue White Silver Red

Pro Shop: (808) 669-8044 Dave’s Take: Friendly resort course with little rough to contend with. The Bay is fairly wide open, which adds to the enjoyment for the high handicapper. However, even the experienced golfer needs to survive Kapalua’s version of Amen Corner (i.e., Nos. 3, 4, 5). The ocean views on 4 and 5 are the island’s best...but if you get too wrapped up in the scenery you”ll be posting triple bogeys. All the greens have been recently redone and putt smooth and firm.

Course Review: Scratch golfers will score very well on this golf course from the tips. It ranks as Maui’s third easiest for them. Bogey golfers playing from the whites, and ladies playing from the reds, enjoy one of the shortest venues we have, and a USGA Slope Rating of just a shot above the isle median from both tees. While short, the Bay plays effectively longer due to a number of holes that play uphill either from the tee or on the approach. Winds can blow and also lengthen some holes. Roll is less than average, but as often as one must climb, one also descends on many holes (but those climbs do feel longer). Some doglegs exist, but they don’t add to the overall length, and they favor neither the fade or draw. The fairways are wide and manageable targets, although on some holes, they get tighter. Roughs are easy to recover from, but bunkers in fairways can be penal, and they are in all the right places. The topography is hilly playing near the sea. Even lies and stances are routine. The green sizes are big. Most are heavily bunkered and multi-tiered. They hold well, and hole locations are not too severe. About five holes have carries over water that come into play. The famous par 3 5th plays over the crashing sea, and hence the name: Bay. Fear factor: low.

Dave’s Take: What strikes you about this course is its length, elevation changes, width of the fairways, size of the greens and the views! What will test your skills are the wind, slope of the greens and ability to hit every club in your bag. A great challenge and a true test of golf. You can tame this beast on a calm day but when the elements are up, even the pros go nuts!

Scratch golfers playing from the tips enjoy Maui’s longest venue. The USGA Course Rating is Maui’s 2nd highest. Bogey golfers playing from the regular ‘whites’ will find this to be on a par with the Royal course in terms of what they can expect to shoot. Men who play the forward tees (ladies too) will find it is Maui’s toughest course. Effective playing length is far shorter than the measured yardage. Roll is big, as are the contours of the holes, which funnel tee shots into slots that help add length. A good example is the 17th hole, a 508-yard par 4 that many will play a 3-metal off the tee, and 7-iron into the green. Elevation and winds also help (for the most part), but when they turn into Konas, the course is five shots or more harder. The fairways are extremely wide on most holes, making for easy targets. Roughs are short. No major doglegs and lie/stance is usually level (when you are where you belong). Topography is sweeping, rolling hills that Sports Illustrated once described as “golf on the edge of the world.” The greens are big targets and hole positions can add strokes quickly because they can make it as easy to leave the golfer above the hole or short. Putting is often across long expanses, but greens roll true, and hold well. Fairway bunkers are massive and reminiscent of a Scottish links. Fear factor is high for most first-timers.

Royal KĀ‘anapali

golf course Tee Times/Pro Shop: (808) 661-3691 Dave’s Take:

One of the oldest and nicest courses on the island. The Royal can play long and tough, especially in the afternoon if the wind is up. I really like the greens, which are substantial, but you rarely get a straight putt so be prepared for the dreaded “3 Jack” ( i.e. 3-putt). I love No. 5 because the green is oceanside and you get a great view of the sunbathers (if you catch my drift). The Champions Tour has been playing their annual Skins Game there, so you know the course is something special.

Course Review: Scratch golfers will quickly find the Royal is Maui’s third toughest from the tips. Local bogey golfers tend to rave about how much they like the Royal, and that’s because from its Keo Makamae tees (Ka‘anapali’s equivalent to the ‘whites’), the course plays to Maui’s median slope of 128. That means half the courses are harder, and the other half are easier, based on the USGA Slope Rating System. The Royal ranks as the 5th most challenging course on Maui for ladies who are bogey golfers playing from the red (Pu Koko‘o) tees. The Royal features unique runway tees that point in the direction of your line. Roll is prevalent as most tee shots play level or downhill. Topographically, the course is set along a hillside, where it ascends and descends in a rolling, winding hole routing. O.B. comes into play often along the course perimeters, and there are some trees framing the holes. Fairways are wide and generous targets, and roughs are easily recovered from. Trade winds are a big factor in the design. The green sizes are large, hold well, and undulate a lot. Hole locations behind bunkers and on tiers add to the challenge. Greenside bunkers can have high lips. Water comes into play at the finish. Not an intimidating course, but it has plenty of bite.

KĀ‘anapali KAI

golf cOURSE Tee Times/Pro Shop: (808) 661-3691 Dave’s Take: The shorter, friendlier course in Ka‘anapali. Just as well groomed as the Royal but recent renovations, particularly the greens and the addition of many new bunkers add to the challenge. The par 3s on this course are flat out tough! The third hole plays 235 yds. from the tips! I love the 18th hole...big time risk/reward scenario. If you are brave enough to attack the short dogleg left, a birdie is a very reasonable expectation. Careless play will result in a watery grave for your ball and your score.

Course Review: The Kai is Maui’s 2nd easiest course for scratch golfers playing from the tips. Bogey golfers tend to struggle more than their female counterparts and scratch competitors, because the Kai is actually tighter and is thus ranked by the USGA as the 4th toughest on Maui from the Sand (white) tees. Lady golfers who play the red (Hibiscus) tees will love the Kai, as it is Maui’s easiest golf course for them. Topography is the same as the Royal: hillside and rolling. Roll helps on level and downhill holes, given the firm fairways, and the course plays shorter. Elevation can make fairway and green targets a little smaller, and winds as well as contours befuddle your efforts to keep your ball on the short grass. Roughs are made for recovery. No real sharp doglegs on the Kai, and the fairway bunkers are mostly visual hole framers. Lies in the fairways are almost always even, and you have only a few holes where your stance may be off kilter. The greens are medium-to-large. They hold well, but hole placements can tempt fate. Putting is much easier here than on the Royal Course. Undulations are there, especially on the newly revamped 3rd. Water comes into play on the finish, with two short carries. Golfers shouldn’t be intimidated at all with the Kai.
