IN ORDER TO PRESERVE THE HOUSE, A DEEP ENERGY RETROFIT IS PROPOSED, WHERE A SECOND LAYER CONTAINING RIGID POLYSTYRENE INSULATION IS APPLYED TO THE FACADE. BY

∷ PROJECT: PENINSULA SUNBELT IS A 7.5 ACRE MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENT LOCATED IN THE TOWN OF SEQUIM, WA. THE FIRST PHASE INVOLVES CONSTRUCTING A SENIOR HOUSING COMMUNITY,
WITH
SUBSEQUENT
PHASES
INCLUDING A GROCERY STORE AND MIXED-USE BUILDINGS WITH AT-GRADE RETAIL. THE SITE CONTAINS A SERIES OF PEDESTRIAL AND BICYCLE PATHS, AS WELL AS A FESTIVAL COMMONS, ENCOURAGING RESIDENTS TO WALK AND BE OUTDOORS.

WASHINGTON IN SEATTLE. OUR APPROACH IS TO MAINTAIN THE EXISTING ENVELOPE OF THE HOME WHILE PROVIDING THE NEEDS OF THE CLIENT IN A FUN AND ENGAGING WAY.
DESIGN: THE
WATER FACING SIDE OF THE
HOUSE IS TO BE VERY TRANSPARENT, ALLOWING FOR EXPANSIVE VIEWS OF THE LAKE. ORGANIZATIONALLY, THE HOUSE IS DIVIDED INTO THREE LEVELS LINKED TOGETHER BY A SCULPTURAL STAIRWAY. THE HOME IS SPATIALLY OPEN AND SEEKS TO DRAW PEOPLE OUTDOORS BY PROVIDING CONNECTIONS OUTWARDS. MY ROLE HAS BEEN AS THE LEAD FOR THIS PROJECT.

∷ COMPETITION: THIS
DESIGN PROPOSAL IS FOR A
BLACK CIVIL RIGHTS MEMORIAL ON THE WASHINGTON LAWN. CURRENTLY, NO MEMORIAL EXISTS ON THE LAWN TO COMMEMORATE THE STRUGGLES AND ACHEIVEMENTS OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT.
THE
CONCEPT FOR THE BUILDING
FORM IS UNITY AND RESISTANCE. ON THE EXTERIOR, TWO WALLS SWOOP INWARDS IN AN EMBRACING FASHION, REPRESENTING UNITY AND CREATE A CENTRAL GATHERING SPACE. THIS CENTER SPACE HOUSES THE MAJORITY OF THE BUILDING’S PROGRAM, WHICH INCLUDES A GALLERY, IDEA CENTER, EXHIBITION SPACES AND A CONFERENCE CENTER. THE SWOOPING ARMS THAT SERVE AS THE ENTRY, SOFTLY RISE TO A BEACON OF HOPE AND ACHEVENEMENT, WITH IMAGERY ALONG THE EXTERIOR RECOUNTING THE STRUGGLE FOR CIVIL RIGHTS.

CENTER IS TO HOUSE
GRAPHIC MEDIA PERTAINING TO MEXICO CITY, RANGING FROM PRE-COLONIAL MANUSCRIPTS TO CONTEMPORARY MASS TRANSIT DIAGRAMS.
THE
SITE IS IN A HISTORIC PLAZA
CALLED THE PLAZA OF THE THREE CULTURES WHICH IS FRAMED BY THE REMNANTS OF AZTEC PYRAMIDS, A
15TH
CENTURY CHURCH, AND A
MODERN HIGH-RISES.

DESIGN APPROACH WAS TO
DRAW ON THESE ELEMENTS IN SHAPING AND DEFINING THE BUILT FORM OF THIS PROJECT.

A REDEVELOPMENT OF
5 X 5 BLOCK AREA OF THE EAST VILLAGE NEIGHBORHOOD OF SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA.
CONCEPT: THE FORMATION OF THE UNDERLYING GEOTECTONIC FORMS OF THE ZANJAS, OR GRABEN, DEFINED THE LAND OF SAN DIEGO LONG BEFORE MAN EVER DECIDED TO ESTABLISH A COMMUNITY.
THIS SCHEME REDISCOVERS
AND EMBRACES THE NATURAL FAULT LINES INHERENT WITHIN THE SITE TO CREATE AN ATTRACTIVE, SAFE, SUSTAINABLE AND PROFITABLE COMMUNITY PROTOTYPE. THE SITE SERVES AS A SEED, PLANTING THE FUTURE FOR FAULTLINE DEVELOPMENT THROUGHOUT THE REGION, WHERE THE NATURAL FEATURES OF THE EARTH ARE CONCEIVED AS A MEANS FOR USEFUL PLACE-MAKING.
