Central Shading Structure Public Park | Located 67 W Culver St. Phoenix AZ 85003
Class: ADE: 422 Architectural Studio IV Professor : Harvey Bryan Work Time: 5 Weeks The Margaret T. Hance park serves home for the fifth largest city in Downtown Phoenix. The full vision for the park is yet to be realized, due to the lack of funding, water features at the park were eventually shut off, vegetation did not survive, and number of amenities were never developed. The goal of the studio is to redevelop Hance park into a vibrant urban park and signiture destination that becomes a catalyst for positive change in the community by the use of upcycling architecture by integrating wind turbine in a highly sustainable manner. Amadeus and I designed a central shading structure with integregated cooling tower to maximize comfort during those hot summer days. A concave in the landscape was designed to fully trap cool air within these gathering spaces and circulation under the shading pavilion. On the canopies, thin-film photovoltaic panels are added for renewable energy. Within the site plenty of vegetation and a water feature were arranged for total comfor of the space.

COOLING TOWERS DESIGN AND DIMENSION For this project, natural draft evaporative cooling will be achieved through the use of cooling towers. Two 54foot tall cooling towers are integrated into the site and coexist with the shading canopies. The towers of similar dimensions are located on the North end of the site, just South of Burton Barr Library. The towers serve as the top connection for the shading canopies at the height of 42-feet, just below the 12-foot tall cooling pads. In the Phoenix climate, the wetted cooling pads have shown to be the most ideal option, where misting nozzles, shower heads, and ceramics are other options. Squared concrete columns support the tower as well as the canopy connections. The tower itself is made of fabric to maintain a light and thin profile to the project.

Library + Cultural Center Expansion Public Library | 8G94+9C8 - Al Juraina 1 - Sharjah - United Arab Emirates
Class: ADE: 521 Architectural Studio V Professor : Phil Horton | Claudia Hapenciuc Work Time: 5 Weeks This semester focused on learning from an existing case study building and to develop an innovative expansion while exploring bioclimatic design approaches in the modern built environment. Throughout the semester we have researched and produced existing drawings to the library that is known as the “House of Wisdom” Library that is located in Sharjah, United States Emirates to further explore, survey, and transform the public library to an innovative expansion. Our expansion as shown in the several slides represent a parametric structure that serves as a green roof to the underground bath house. This enclosed but open structure provides spaces for relaxation and user circulation throughout the site. Inspiration behind this structure is an important piece that sits on the site which is “The Scroll”. The parametric structure is a contemporary interpretation of the ancient Arabic scrolls that provides an innovative expansion to the House of Wisdom Library.

The New American University Installations into ASU Campus | Located Arizona State University
Class: ADE: 421 Architectural Studio III Professor : Elena Rocchi Work Time: 3 Months The elevation view from the project is shown to portray the concept of objects on water. A platform on water is used to accomodate new uses throughout the Tempe Lake and also making installments onto the ASU campus to create this masterplan across the university. These platforms provide several uses through green spaces and using the lakes advantage to bring water to the surface. When these sitting platforms come together, it creates almost like a floating cities creating several green spaces, pushing the boundaries of what a new life can look like in a different environment to create an enjoyable and sustainable community, simply providing another form of human habitat. Since these platforms are movable and towed onto a site, there is an opportunity to accomodate new spaces around ASU creating a more enganging environment across disciplines. A platform on water or making installments onto ASU campus offers plenty of green spaces or new uses is a way to re-imagine a future campus in a Univeristy.

Alvord Library Library | Located 67 W C
Class: ADE: 322 Architectural Studio II Professor : Amit Upadhye Work Time: 4 Weeks
Alvord Library, the site in Laveen, Arizona, is extended beyond what is known as Alvord Lake. The idea behind this began in the Parti diagram where a stack of messy books was my initial thought process defining numerous amounts of interior and exterior spaces within this library, thus shaping its form. This Library consist of 24,000 sqft. Towards the east side of the building, private study rooms and a deck that extends onto the lake were designed giving astonished views of of the Alvord Lake and the South Mountains. The second floor consists of a small portion of book stacks but also a terrace that overlooks the Lake and onwards past Baseline Rd. This building sits on an earth mound with earth berms surrounding it which keeps it cooler and reduces carbon emissions while minimizing traffic noises.

Extension of the Light Rail - Red Square is the Site, and A couple blocks west will be the light rail extension bus stop from the site.
Rising Community Student Housing | Located Grant St. and 2nd St.
Class: ADE: 321 Architectural Studio I Professor : John Lee Work Time: 3 Weeks
Based on site and housing research on Grant St. and 2nd St., there is a need for denser urban housing. Therefore, designing a campus style housing for young adults who are early in their professional careers that are still studying is needed. These students are within close proximity of ASU downtown, Art school, and only a couple blocks east from the extension of the light rail. Within my design I am proposing a mixture of different bedroom units and studios. Some other areas include a restaurant/bar that will be providing inside seating and outdoor seating on the east side of the building. This housing will also have an outdoor area where there is a pool and many lounge chairs to enjoy the outdoors and relax. Within the building there is study halls with also a fitness center on the ground floor.

Mixed-Use Building 2nd Year Space Exploration
Class: ALA: 226 Design Fundamentals IV Professor : Marc Neveu, Karin Santiago Work Time: 3 Weeks Throughout this semester the overgoal was to be able to communicate spatial and formal relationships, ability to produce scaled drawing, innovate response to given guidelines and ultimately produce a properly scaled model. Although we were not given to produce a proper program I ultimately wanted to show a sort of Library and art museum through this given building through a physical model, axonometric drawing, and vignettes of the day in life of the building.

Resume:
Welcome, may I introduce myself? My name is Alonzo Cabrera. At the moment I have just graduated with a Bachelor’s in Architecture in the spring of 2021 at Arizona State University. I am currently in the Masters program at Arizona State University where I will be majoring in Architecture and Construction Management. Throughout my course as a designer what really has interest me is that it is a creative field, where one can make plenty models, play with forms and functions, visit numerous places and learn so many things everytime, and sketch and draft for hours altogether. I feel that it is the art of creating, not only built forms but also the surroundings and I feel at highest when in charge of creating a space which will depict emotions, be comfortable, and pleasant.
