The Transferable Skills of Being an Admin Assistant

In the world we live in today, it’s more important that we gain transferable skills that can carry us into many different professional avenues, rather than focusing on skills for one specific position. Luckily for us, many professions (and the training that prepares us for them) teach us these essential, transferable skills. One of these professions is an admin assistant. Administrative Assistants are tasked daily with typing, managing spreadsheets, creating and keeping schedules, having professional phone etiquette and interpersonal skills, and being able to properly communicate. These are also skills required for Secretarial roles, PA roles, Teaching Assistants, and many more.

Let’s take a closer look at some of these key transferable skills


1. We’re living in a digital age where computer skills are essential for virtually every job. Most of us are quite good at research and social media, but with the common use of symbols, shorthand words and phrases, and emojis, we’re quite rubbish at typing. Whether it’s to improve your ability to type long essays for school or to gain employment in a PA, Admin or Secretarial position, having an online typing course on your CV is a great way to set your resume apart from the rest. 2. What is the one item almost always in your hand? All day, every day? Your mobile phone. This is the case for most professionals, and yet most don’t know proper phone etiquette. Learning how to conduct yourself over the phone is key to landing yourself the position after blowing them away in the interview. Skills required for proper phone etiquette: confident and appropriate tone, good introduction, effective communication of information, proper wait time. 3. Almost all CVs used to apply for office and business positions have an element of “Organisation” under the skills section. To set your CV apart from the rest, showing that you have taken an Admin Assistant course and learned how to manage schedules and spreadsheets will prove that you can put your money where your mouth is. The course will give you great practice for those real-life situations, no matter the position, where organisation is key.
