Tips Before Moving Abroad – Ready to Move Abroad

For various reasons, UK residents are choosing to move overseas. Moving abroad to a different country can be both exciting and terrifying. You’ll have to get to grips with a new culture, potentially a completely different language, all whilst finding a way to make a living. Before you take your seat on the plane, here are a few ways to make the experience less daunting:

Make some online connections before moving abroad Find local Facebook groups for the area that you’re planning to move to. Use these as an opportunity to connect with the locals and learn about their lifestyles and routines. These can be town or city news groups, or even local buy and sell groups.

Brush up on the language You’ll find the move a lot easier if you have at least basic knowledge of the language. You don’t have to be fluent, but the locals will appreciate any little effort that you’re making. A Spanish course could be valuable if

you’re moving to sunnier climes. Or perhaps German language for beginners? You can learn any language with an online course from Alpha Academy, instead of relying on phrasebooks.

Work on your employability Perhaps you already have a career in mind? If not, now is the time to brush up on your skills and qualifications. You have an opportunity to reinvent yourself, working in a completely different role, unless you’re moving specifically for your job. Maybe you could use a skill you already have to start a brand-new career? Or gain a qualification to teach English abroad, maybe even working in China like so many other British expats? Overseas families might also love the idea of an English nanny, making a childcare course another very valuable option. Pack light You’re moving abroad, so of course, you’ll want to take absolutely everything with you! But there’s no better opportunity to have a clutter clear-out. Before you travel, decide if things really need to move with you. Those items that haven’t moved from under the stairs in almost a decade may not be worth space in your luggage. Sort through your clothes, as well. Throw out everything except for your favorite items. Remember that your new home will also have nearby shops. You can always buy new things once you’ve unpacked.
