It is impossible to explain precisely what architecture is - its limits are by no means well-defined. On the whole, art should not be explained; it must be experienced. Steen Eiler Rasmussen

4 Design Exploration
A simple square formation is altered by adding lines to create new angles and geometry within the boundaries. By adding dimension and volume to this 2-D design, these rigid barriers are broken. While the aerial view remains the same, the 3-D perspective plays with depth and space. Adding dimension allows for further creativity and transforms even the simplest designs into complex structures.
2x2 Unit Composition Using the initial geometric design, a new composition is made by shading certain shapes. The contrasting colors give the illusion of positive and negative space, which drives the 3-D unit construction. White elements are pushed forward, while black elements are set back to create an entirely different 3-D design.

Through repetition of the individual unit, a pattern is created. This pattern is then reflected over the horizontal axis three times, combining sixteen identical units into one logical system.

Finding Inspiration graphite on vellum
Studying the work of other architects can inspire new ideas and methods of design. Therefore, in this project, a close look was taken at Santiago Calatrava and his design for the Milwaukee Art Museum. For this building, Calatrava chose to tranform the natural movement of a flying bird into a structural piece of architecture. As the steel wings open and close each day and night, this art museum transforms into a piece of art itself.

8 Design Exploration
Utilizing the Information Using Calatrava as inspiration, our task was to create a unique, sculptural job sign for a future faculty and alumni center. Rather than using the wings of a bird, the natural movement and structure of a blooming rose became the driving factor of the design.

Working Out the Details Like Calatrava’s work, the rose-inpired job sign will open and close throughout the day, but in order to perfect this design, certain details need to be finalized. The building name and opening date are to be carved in a circular shape around the base of the structure. Then, by creating sections and detail drawings, the joints and the relationship of the sculpture to the land can be understood.

Capturing Shadows As the sun moves across the sky, shadows constantly change shape and position, creating intriguing patterns and designs when documented. Using scrap pieces of wood and plastic, a structure is constructed at random, and shadows at various times throughout the day are traced to reveal these patterns.

Adding Depth create volume
The tracings may be 2-D, but with the addition of darkness and light, an illusion of depth is created. Unique shapes and patterns are highlighted and an entirely new form takes shape.

Casting an Object Once complete, the form which emerges from the drawing can be translated into a 3-D object using chipboard, proving that shadows can cast objects. This creation process provides an entirely new way to produce designs and innovative forms.

Shadow Mapping Continued Shadows not only have the ability to cast objects, but are capable of producing buildings as well. Prominent shapes and patterns are identified in the shadow map, and become the basis for the final building design. investigate program

Establishing a location and program is the key to beginning a building design. The chosen site for this project is an open lot in Philadelphia, PA across from Love Park. The resulting program is then a derivative of its location. After researching its surroundings, it became clear that a new restaurant and bar could flourish in the area. Once this program is chosen, building development and design can begin.

Shadows to Structure The final structure echos the movements in the shadow map. The shapes and repetitive elements cast by the shadows are translated into both the building’s structure and its landscape.

Schematic Design The development of the form is directed by the program. By separating the object into sections, tentative floor plans and elevations are constructed with ease. The concert hall occupies the center of the form, allowing the other elements of the program to revolve around it.

Inventing a Form Creating a form without guidelines allows for limitless creativity and possibilities. Due to the inconsistant sizes and angles of the pieces, this trianglular design took on a life of its own and grew into a bridge-like structure.

Modifications to the initial design result in a final building that is both functional and consistant with the original form. Steel and metal join to create a geodome structure. The irregular shapes continue throughout the building and landscaping design through the use of angled walls and staggered walkways.

This semester long designbuild project brought together students from different educational backgrounds. As a group, we worked together to transform our hand sketches and construction plans into a full scale, traditional Chinese pavilion.

Receive Approval Before we could begin building the pavilion, our class had to gain approval from the community and the city. We set up meetings with different groups in the community and used their suggestions to formulate the final design. We then put together a series of plans, renderings, and engineered calculations and submitted them to the city for approval.

Building the Structure The purpose of our study was to understand ancient Chinese carpentry methods and how they are used to build a stable structure. Rather than simply reading about these techniques, we used them to design and construct a life-size reinterpretation of an Chinese pavilion. Through the process, the class not only learned carpentry skills first hand, but gained an appreciation for the timeless craft.

The Dougong An ancient Chinese bracketing system, the dougong combines small (dou) and large (gong) pieces, which are then mortised together to create a structural and decorative corner piece to support the roof structure.

Amanda Phillips 27
While our group successfully finished the main structure for the pavilion, we were unable to complete the roof and floor due to time constraints. The following semester, a new class will pick up where we left off by adding rafters, roofing tiles, and stone flooring to finalize the pavilion and create a resting place for the community to enjoy.
