A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

This year Ker & Downey celebrates 25 years; 25 years of creating travel memories for you and your families; 25 years of seeking out the most authentic experiences in the farthest reaches of the globe; 25 years of making people’s lives better one trip at a time. In the last 25 years, we have seen the travel industry change. We’ve seen the rise and fall of travel destinations, discovered new places, and created experiences that can’t be replicated by other travel companies. We’ve weathered storms and gone through seasons of fear among travelers, particularly after the attacks on September 11, 2001. We are currently in a rapidly changing climate for worldwide travel. While we do not underestimate the effects COVID-19 will have on the travel industry, we remain committed and determined to make decisions based on the bigger picture of moving forward together and stronger. In times of trial I often think of a place that brings me joy. For me, it is sitting in a tent in Botswana, listening to the sounds of nature, taking in the smell of the bush. The crisis we currently face will pass, and the world will begin to heal. It is travel that is going to help us all move forward together. Travel is one of the most powerful tools we have to restore normalcy to our lives, feed our souls, and revitalize weakened economies. It truly is life changing. We will explore the world together again. In the meantime, I invite you to dream about your happy place. It is my hope that the stories, destinations, and itineraries within this issue of Quest serve as inspiration for you and spark creativity for your future journey. When you are ready to travel to your happy place, let us know at luxury@kerdowney.com.

When you travel with Ker & Downey, you become a force for good across the globe. These are some of the initiatives and partnerships we’re proud to support.

EAST AFRICA For over two decades, we have been returning to Africa on a mission to give back to communities affected by malaria, the leading cause of death of children in Africa. Recently Ker & Downey’s Greg Jackson traveled to Uganda to meet with the people in Soroti. Over six days, Greg and a team of doctors and nurses helped more than 6,000 patients and distributed 7,200 mosquito nets. “The warmth of the people was almost unanimous and the gratitude heartfelt,” says Greg. Donate at www.kerdowney.com/ker-downey-for-africa

SOUTH AFRICA Investing in the community is at the heart of the Grootbos Foundation’s work. Locals are offered a chance to study and train in hospitality at the Green Futures College thereby increasing employment opportunities upon graduating. Kids at the Football Foundation kick a ball around with new boots partly funded by Ker & Downey. Recently, two of the players were given the opportunity to represent South Africa in the Under 13 Futsal World Cup in Barcelona.

B OT SWA N A The Bana Ba Letsatsi center supports over 250 vulnerable, at-risk orphaned youth. The students learn practical skills and the value of hard work through time spent in the vegetable and poultry garden. The vegetables are sold to the local community after harvesting as a means of generating income for the Bana Ba Letsatsi center. The goal is to make the students self-sufficient so they can one day support themselves.

E C UA D O R When traveling to South America you are supporting the Gala Plaza Lasso Foundation’s scholarship program for disadvantaged children to receive education. The program also pays for uniforms, supplies, school fees, and access to extracurricular activities. Seventy-five scholarships have been awarded since the inception of the program.

CAMBODIA A portion of every custom Asia journey goes to ABOUTAsia, an organization founded with the aim of changing local communities in the Siem Reap Province through education. Ker & Downey clients have helped almost 53,000 children across 110 schools with upgraded libraries, playground equipment, and water wells. 8

Australia has always been one of our most-loved, far-flung destinations. There’s just so much to see on the vast continent. Although fires raged in certain parts, there are other areas of the country that are beckoning visitors. Here are suggestions for some terrific destinations. TASMANIA: We are pretty smitten with Tasmania, the large island to the south. Its unique culture and character make it a must on an Australia itinerary. NINGALOO REEF: Head west to the UNESCO-listed Ningaloo Reef known for its sea turtle, dolphin, and humpback whale migrations, with the biggest underwater star being the docile whale shark. Continue your journey with a snorkeling expedition in the Great Barrier Reef. THE NORTHERN TERRITORY: For land adventures, we suggest heading to the Northern Territory, a desert area known to the First Nations people for thousands of years.

W H E R E TO G O I N N I N E M ON T H S Blue Mountains National park and Kangaroo Island were all severely affected by the fires — giving us all the more reason to plan a trip to visit later this year when tourism support will be needed. Let’s use travel as a force for good in Australia just as we do in so many other places across the globe.

HOW W E H E L P E D There are many organizations pitching in to battle the devastating blazes such as the NSW Rural Fire Service. In the first quarter of 2020, Ker & Downey donated $100 per booking on all trips to this worthwhile organization. For updated information on visiting Australia contact us at luxury@kerdowney.com

COME FLY AWAY FLY CAMPING: AN IN-TENTS TRAVEL EXPERIENCE FOR THE ADVENTUROUS By Katy Heerssen

The term ‘fly camping’ originates from the early days of African safaris. Explorers wishing to travel light would pack just the outer sheet of a tent — called a fly sheet — and string it up between trees for their shelter. The minimalist camping setup was meant to protect the safari-goers from the elements and could be easily moved to their next stop on their safari. Modern travelers are embracing fly camping for its low-impact ethos and the rare chance to completely disconnect from the world: no permanent structures, no electricity, and no cell phone reception. Today’s fly camping experience is varied. Your shelter might be an actual tent with bucket showers or just a mosquito net strung up over a bed roll, but it is every bit as adventurous as those early days of safaris. A I M H I GH MAYA COMMUNITY TREK SAN ANDRES IZTAPA, GUATEMALA Combining the culture and nature of Guatemala with immersive trekking adventures, the Maya Community Trek spans three days throughout the communities of San Andres Itzapa. You don’t just pass through these wonders: each new locale offers a chance to interact with locals, from the farmers in their terraced fields to receiving a lesson in traditional weaving and making blue corn tortillas. A trio of camps - Terra, Fuego, and Agua - are no-nonsense canvas-clad places to bed down and recharge along the way. The trip tops out at 9,040 feet above sea level with your panorama including six different volcanoes and the mesmerizing cloud forest. C Y CLE THE W ORL D Try out a fresh way to see a new place — a bicycle journey stretches your legs as you cycle your way through scenic destinations. These are our top journeys. By Rina Chandarana

ITALY

NEW ZEALAND

There’s no better way to experience the astoundingly beautiful Tuscan countryside than a leisurely bicycle ride through the tiny towns dotting your path. Take in the enchanting landscapes swathed in olive groves and bathed in delicate sunlight under the Italian blue sky as you peddle along.

Opt for an e-bike with electric power that helps you pedal, allowing near-effortless navigation so your attention is better focused on the scenery and off-road adventures that await you.

SCOTLAND In Glen Affric, fuel up on biscuits and clotted cream before setting out on a leisurely ride on single-lane roads through the gently rolling hills of the Scottish Highlands.

DENMARK Make like a local and ride your way through Copenhagen where 60 percent of the residents do the same, making it the cyclist capital of the world.

PERU Wheel your way through the Sacred Valley’s scenic trails and tracks that meander by quinoa plantations and red-roofed villages with the imposing Andes as your backdrop. Your companion? The shade of eucalyptus trees. The traffic? A flock or two of sheep.

BOTSWANA Besides roaming around on foot, one of the best ways to see Botswana’s zebra, antelope, giraffe, hyena, lion, leopard, and cheetah is on a bicycle. Crisscross the flat Mashatu Game Reserve for a few hours while following the daily movements of roaming wild elephants and stopping for midmorning tea and a picnic in the bush.

THAILAND Outside of Bangkok’s buzz, you will find a quieter world best seen on bike. Make your way through Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park’s magnificent limestone mountains, freshwater valley marshes, and beautiful beaches, stopping to discover quiet Buddhist temples along the way.

WOMEN OWNED BIKE SHOPS Next time you are in Zambia, head over to the Chipego Bike Shop in Nakatindi Village, established with donations made by Sanctuary Sussi & Chuma. The women who run the bike shop invest their profits in community programs, including one that provides schooling for orphans. The project was so successful that Sanctuary Retreats also supports similar ones in Botswana, Tanzania, and Uganda.

CAPE TOWN ADVENTURE Cape Town never falls short on things to see or do and usually that involves kicking back before or after a safari. What about exploring the adventurous side of this South African city? Escape+Explore’s Founder Ingram Casey chats with us about some family-friendly, exciting options. By Rina Chandarana & Vanessa Niven

This is one of the most diverse cities on the planet. Guides who are local heroes in their own right, from wine masters to surf champions — each one has a fascinating story to tell and delivers experiences ranging from delving behind the scenes at art galleries to climbing the lesser known routes of Table Mountain. HOW ARE ADVENTURE-SEEKERS TAKEN AROUND TOWN?

Our “Adventure Utility Vehicle” carries everything you might want onboard to adventure like a local. Hiking packs, inflatable stand-up paddleboards, and outdoor furniture for a crowd-free picnic is all packed on the AUV. There is also a full gourmet pantry with all sorts of local treats for snacking in-between with tea, coffee, and even hot chocolate with marshmallows midhike. The cooler is stocked with local craft beer, wine, and a full gin bar, which is handy for sundowners. We also have access to helicopters, small planes, classic cars, yachts, tuk tuks, motorcycles with side cars, and a retro Land Rover.

22

K ER & DOW N E Y

WHAT FAMILY-FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES DO YOU SUGGEST?

There are penguin beaches, paddleboarding at sea, and scrambling across the top of Table Mountain. Our guides have a full toy bag to play games on vast vineyard lawns while parents sample fine wines. Every child receives a handcrafted recycled backpack that includes treasure maps, gifts created in our local township, and a Young Guide Adventure Academy booklet chock-full of activities. Every experience is fully tested by an in-house team of young adventurers — Casey's three kids. HOW DO YOUR ACTIVITIES IMPACT THE ENVIRONMENT?

Making a positive impact is at our core. Everything we source for our tours is local and curated to support the community. We make a donation to an ecotourism initiative every time we take a visitor to the penguin beaches. I am most proud of our Adventure Academy internship and leadership program which empowers girls to stay in school and become economically independent.

Right across the Tanzanian coast lies this collection of islands known as Zanzibar, the Spice Islands. Renowned for the cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and pepper that made it a magnet for trade attracting Arabs, Persian, Indians, and Portuguese to its shores. You will find remnants of these cultures still apparent in the UNESCO-listed Stone Town during your tour with one of our expert guides. In addition to its rich history, Zanzibar is a natural paradise too. The endangered red colobus monkey can be found in the Jozani Forest. A short boat ride over the clear blue sea takes you to Prison Island, home to a tortoise sanctuary. When you stay at Matemwe, you’ll have access to some of the continent’s best snorkeling among diverse coral reefs that would have left even Jacques Cousteau in awe.

Mauritius

São Tomé and Príncipe

It might be tiny, but Mauritius is a big mélange of Arab, Portuguese, Dutch, French, British, Chinese, Indian, and Creole cultures. Get a better idea of the island’s diversity with a tour in the capital of Port Louis, founded in 1735 by a French governor. Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site Aapravasi Ghat honoring Indian indentured laborers; then walk around China Town, a bustling area where migrants once arrived to work as blacksmiths, carpenters, cobblers, and tailors in the 1780s. Besides all the history, Mauritius also boasts impeccable snorkeling and scuba diving in Blue Bay Marine Park as well as hiking in Black River Gorges National Park. Use the Oberoi Beach Resort as your base to explore all Mauritius has to offer. You’ll want for nothing in one of its oceanfront villas or in the spa where you will be pampered with local treatments.

The tiny islands stranded in the Gulf of Guinea are inhabited by descendants of European immigrants and African slaves, with the official language being Portuguese. Príncipe, the smaller island, is designated entirely as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and tucked within its tropical forests are 15 tented villas at Sundy Praia. Built to resemble fisherman’s huts, the lodge is replete with handcrafted local artifacts. What will really catch your eye though is the prolific wildlife. Príncipe has often been referred to as the African Galapagos where sea turtles waddle onto the beaches to lay eggs. There’s another natural gift the islands are lucky to have — cocoa. In 1913 the tiny country produced so much cocoa that it was nicknamed the “Chocolate Islands”. We will take you to see (and taste) where this sweet treat is produced.

On safari at Somalisa Camp in Zimbabwe

AUTHENTIC AFRICA African Bush Camps founder Beks Ndlovu is redefining what luxury in the bush looks like. By Haley Beham

"Dream big, work hard, stay humble” isn’t just a catchy motto for Beks Ndlovu. It’s a way of life. As a young boy growing up on the edge of Hwange National Park, Beks frequently chased intruding elephants from his home by banging pots and pans together. It was this ritual that sparked an interest in the wildlife surrounding his home, leading to many days of exploration with friends. His amateur explorer days launched him onto a career path in the safari world. He started at the bottom as a camp staffer and worked his way up, eventually becoming a guide for a top safari company. Later, he branched out to form his own private guiding company, accumulating a number of guiding awards along the way. Then in 2006, he founded African Bush Camps with his property Somalisa Camp, a six-tent property shaded by acacia trees in Hwange National Park near his childhood home. “It was a passion of mine to start something that redefines what the world today knows as luxury. Luxury on safari is being out in a very remote, truly authentic wilderness area with a team of guides who are really passionate about their environment.”

The African Bush Camps portfolio now encompasses properties in Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Botswana. Its most recent venture, Linyanti Expeditions, is a seasonal camp with just six tents in the northern reaches of Botswana in the Linyanti Wilderness Reserve. The 275,000-acre private concession enjoys an abundance of wildlife in the vast untouched grasslands, forests, and lagoons. Large herds of elephant, buffalo, and zebra roam the savannas while predators like lion, leopard, cheetah, and wild dog are in close proximity.

PRO TIP! "When photographing wildlife, lock your focus on the subject’s eyes and use a shallow depth of field to let the background drop out of focus. This will make the animals stand out and create a visually stunning photograph." – Jamie Bell, Designer

Located on the southern banks of the Linyanti River, Linyanti Expeditions is a return to the simplicity of expedition-style camping with an emphasis on an authentic, unhurried safari experience. As dawn is breaking, enjoy a warm cup of coffee before setting off on foot into the bush following ancient game trails, or on a game vehicle in search of wildlife. Another option would be to spend the day gliding silently on a mokoro through the lagoons. While each interaction with wildlife is thrilling, the real highlight of a Linyanti Expeditions safari, however, are the guides, which is unsurprising, since they were each rigorously trained by Beks. Their love for Africa is infectious and it doesn’t stop at the wildlife and environment. Cooperation and giving back to the communities surrounding the African Bush Camps has been a top priority since day one leading Beks to create the African Bush Camps Foundation. Profits are utilized by the foundation to provide scholarships to local school children along with business and skills training for at-risk women and young girls. For each person that stays in an African Bush Camp property, USD $20 per night is given to the foundation to cover overhead costs, ensuring donations are focused on the projects that need funding most. Beks has come a long way from his boyhood days of chasing elephants from his home, but his focus for African Bush Camps remains unchanged: to create a business that supports conservation and directly impacts the lives of the people surrounding his camps, and to deliver the very best personalized safari experience to his guests. His efforts have skyrocketed him to the top of the safari industry. His passion keeps him there.

EGYPT ON THE RISE The land of pharaohs is full of antiquities, yet it is anything but stuck in the past. By Haley Beham

H

istory comes alive in Egypt. Cruising down the Nile, walking among the ancient temples, or gazing upon the pyramids of Giza — the last remaining wonder of the ancient world — are time traveling through past civilizations. As you make your way through the towering columns of the colossal monuments, you can almost hear the shuffle of sandals on the temple floors. You’ve entered an ancient culture. It’s mesmerizing, aweinspiring, and otherworldly. It’s hard to comprehend the magnitude of the Egyptian temples without walking through them yourself. Perfectly legible hieroglyphics stretch across the temple walls. You can still see the vibrant colors of red, green, yellow, and blue on surfaces that have been protected from the elements. At Karnak, Egypt’s largest temple complex, 134 sandstone columns with diameters of almost 10 feet soar in the sky in the Great Hypostyle Hall. Twelve of the columns are giant, reaching up to 70 feet, while the rest are 32 feet tall. They stand, waiting for visitors to walk through and uncover their secrets.

PRO TIP! "Make plans to visit the temple of Luxor at night when it is illuminated by hundreds of lights, creating a magical display." - Sara Kramer, Director of Marketing

Over the last decade, Egypt’s tourism has taken a hit with the 2011 uprising, the ensuing turmoil and violence, a military coup, and the bombing of a Russian airplane in 2015. While Egypt’s tourism numbers are trending upward, they are a far cry from the nearly 15 million people that visited in 2010. Everyone loves a comeback, and Egypt’s might be one of the greatest yet. The opening of a brand new, state of the art mega-museum marks a focus on the future, with an emphasis on ways to better preserve and flaunt some of the world’s most treasured artifacts. At almost 700,000 square feet, the new Grand Egyptian Museum is set to remedy the overcrowding that often plagues the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities. Expected to be one of the largest archaeological museums in the world, it will house about 100,000 artifacts once it is completed, with the Tutankhamun collection likely to be the biggest draw. Since the discovery of the boy king’s tomb in 1922, only about a third of what was discovered has been on display. The new digs will

display the complete collection of over 5,000 objects, including his famous funerary mask. The Grand Egyptian Museum will give visitors the chance to step back in time viewing 3,000 years of ancient Egyptian history. As guests make their way through the galleries, they will also be able to see the Giza pyramids, located less than two miles away, through the glass facades. The Grand Egyptian Museum is a source of tremendous national pride for the country, in hopes to reinvigorate not only the tourism industry, but also the next generation of Egyptians who will be responsible for protecting the nation’s antiquities for years to come. This is of critical importance because Egypt shouldn’t be a one-time destination. Archaeologists are constantly unearthing monuments and making new discoveries, so there’s something new to experience with each visit — whether it’s your first trip to Egypt or you are on a return excursion. Whatever you do, don’t stand still, because the country with a wealth of antiquities is evolving and you don’t want to get left behind.

Sigiriya Lion Rock fortress in Sri Lanka

SMALL IMPACT It might be tiny, but Sri Lanka is chock-full with history, culture, wildlife, and cuisine. Ker & Downey’s Tiffany Dunn explains why you should visit. As told to Rina Chandarana

S

ri Lanka is a leisurely destination where you can go from breathtaking beaches to elephant watering holes in no time at all due to its small, navigable size.

HISTORY Sri Lanka’s varied cultural influences — Arab, Dutch, Portuguese, Indian, and British specifically — have left indelible marks on the country. In the trading port town of Galle, the scrolling rooflines of colonial structures are a reminder of the Dutch influence. The religious diversity in Sri Lanka is surprising considering its diminutive size. I find Hindu and Buddhist temples, a mosque, and a church all within one town. Asanka, our private guide, has arranged our schedule so we are the first to arrive at the UNESCO-listed fortress in Sigiriya, one of the oldest remnants of the island’s rich culture. We hike past incredible views of the valley all around us. As we ascend, we find the crumbling royal residence of King Kasyapa along with the ancient and wellpreserved turquoise, red, and yellow frescoes of women adorned in jewels.

TEATIME Tea is arguably Sri Lanka’s most important export. As local children begin the morning walk to school, their mothers dressed in bright patterns, are easy to spot picking tea leaves that carpet the verdant Hill Country. I think this is the most beautiful part of Sri Lanka. At high tea, I choose a variety served with milk accompanied with sweet and savory pastries placed on pretty tiered platters.

WILDLIFE Asanka takes us on a row across a lake stippled with lily pads. The serene silence is only occasionally interrupted by the sounds of the many birds. On another large lake in Gal Oya National Park, fishermen cast their nets while close to 30 elephants, including calves, graze by the gentle shore.

CULTURE

Photos courtesy of iStock

What is immediately obvious when you hit Sri Lanka’s streets is its penchant for color — lots of it. Red, blue, green, and purple sarees are accessorized with gold necklaces and bracelets. Fruits are bursting with a bright intensity. Blaring music beckons the faithful into the Koneswaram Temple, a smorgasbord of Hindu statues in a hybrid of hues. As we make our way to the top we can see Gokarna Bay shimmering way down below. The normally busy temple is even more so because of the Diwali holiday. Families wearing their best outfits stream past us carrying flowers and coconuts as prayer offerings. Outside the Koneswaram Temple, we munch on an array of sweet, salty, and spicy treats. Though I can’t recall the names of the delicacies sampled, their flavors are permanently etched on my tongue.

SPICE IS RIGHT By the coast, we dine on fresh seafood. My favorite is the fragrant lobster curry, made creamy with coconut milk and complemented by rice and sambal. We love spicy food and request the chef to make it just as they would for a local.

Stand up paddleboarding in the Catskills

CATSKILLS REVIVAL Ker & Downey designer Catherine Brown trades in international glam for a truly memorable active adventure closer to home. As told by Haley Beham

T

he Catskills is ripe for a revival. Just 90 miles northwest of New York City, the pine-covered peaks and rolling hills were once the backdrop of a tourism empire. From the early 1900’s through the 1970’s, urbanites escaping the heat of the city and looking for fresh mountain air fled to the Catskills. Then, almost as if overnight, tourism to the area declined. After decades of sitting empty, hotels that once hosted throngs of New York families for the summer sat shuttered and in ruins. The region is ready for a renaissance. The last 10 years have seen talented chefs move to the Catskills’ small towns and plant vegetable gardens, offering delectable farm-to-table dining options. Cafes, bars, artist studios, and craft breweries have also begun to spring up. In contrast to the Hamptons, which have become ritzy and crowded, there’s a real sense of remoteness and discovery happening in the Catskills. It has suddenly become the go-to retreat for those looking for exclusivity.

Coupled with Eric’s enthusiasm for the region and its resources our excitement for the experiences to come were heightened. Knowing we would be ready to stretch our legs after the drive, Eric had mountain bikes waiting for us, including a tandem bike for him and my eight-year-old daughter to share. Admittedly none of us have ever been confident bikers, but Eric’s easy way of encouragement had my daughter asking to go again the following day (and the next!). Over the next several days, we went hiking, caving, swimming, white water rafting, stand-up paddleboarding, and more. My kids had the time of their lives. It almost felt like a family “outward bound” experience. With each new activity, Eric pushed us just a little beyond our comfort level, and everyone, including my six-year-old son, rose to the challenge, which was an amazing experience for my family.

To witness this revival for myself, I packed up my children and drove to the Catskills in search of the same natural beauty and fresh mountain air so many city dwellers had sought nearly half a century before me. Eric and his wife Troy had invited us to stay in their charming guest house, a historic place encompassed by wellmaintained hiking trails, miles of perfect creeks, ancient Native American caves, idyllic waterfalls, and crystal-clear swimming holes. It was as though we had arrived at a secret national park we had all to ourselves.

Our accommodations were comfortable and the food, whether made at the house by a fabulous private chef or at a charming Mexican restaurant in town, was a wonderful reward at the end of each day. But the true luxury of the Catskills was not in the accommodations or the dining options. Luxury, we found, was in the experience: going wherever the trail or Eric led us. Witnessing my kids blossom as they navigated woods, white water, and caves with enthusiasm and an adventurous spirit — that was the unexpected gift I brought home.

In the rafting world, Eric is a pioneer, working not only to protect the river resources and running conservation awareness trips, but also promoting safety. For over 30 years, he has led rafting trips for couples, families, and celebrities like Robert Kennedy Jr. and Glenn Close. Whether in Patagonia, Canada, Peru, or the Catskills, Eric’s love for all-ages adventure is undeniable

One of our most memorable activities was white water rafting, which was perhaps unsurprising given Eric’s professional experience. Leading up to the trip, my kids had been positively terrified. I asked Eric as we were about to push off from the riverbank if he was sure about this, and he simply said “Yes.” Knowing safety was his priority we went for it. My son and daughter rafted with Eric in a cataraft, and I kayaked on my own — two things I never thought we would do. When we finished our first run, my daughter immediately turned to Eric and said, “Can we do it again?” The answer was yes. After our rafting adventure we trusted Eric to take us to do anything.

Fly-fishing in Aysen Aysen is easily one of the most renowned fishing regions in the world. Located in central Patagonia, its wide variety of lakes, lagoons, rivers, and protected national parks make it ideal for anglers in search of rainbow, brown, and Fario trout. The Baker, Aysen, and Simpson rivers are the prime trout meccas, while Riesco Lake is reliable for its abundance of salmon. Fishers from around the world visit the region during the prime season from October to mid-May, but Aysen is so vast and remote that you will often enjoy entire stretches of river all to yourself.

Horseback riding in Wine Country Combine your spirit of adventure with your love of the finer things on a scenic horseback ride through the vineyards of Chile’s wine region. From Casablanca to Colchagua to Maipo, the country’s many wine valleys serve up enchanting terrain, authentic cowboy culture, delectable wine, and delicious cuisine. The wild waters of the Futaleufú (or “Big River”) set the scene for an unforgettable rafting experience. Situated near the Argentinian border, this stretch of water may not be the easiest to get to, but its different sections and diverse terrain make it a well-loved destination for all ages of adventure seekers. Combine your rafting activities with a soak in the local thermal springs for an extra “splash” of luxury.

Surfing in Pichilemu Just a couple of hours from Santiago rests the ultimate surfing hot spot of Pichilemu. Often described as “California in the 1960s”, its uncrowded beaches and epic 30-foot waves and barrels attract surf enthusiasts from around the world. Not a classic surfer? Windsurfing, kitesurfing, and sailing are thrilling alternatives.

Scuba diving around Easter Island Those who venture to the depths of the bay of Hanga Roa are in for an incredible surprise. Not only is the water extremely transparent due to the absence of plankton and pollution (thanks, volcanoes!), but there are also mesmerizing Moai statues sunken off the west coast of the island. Additional underwater wonders include a multitude of submarine volcanoes, arches, caves, cliffs, and lava platforms — reminders of Chile’s existence along an active volcanic chain. 60

Puma tracking in Patagonia See if you can spot the elusive puma on a private safari through Torres del Paine. These fierce felines tend to avoid humans, but you will have some of the best trackers in the region on hand to help you find the mysterious creature. Once spotted, you’ll never forget standing in the presence of these Big Cats, of which only about 50 reside in the park. Perhaps you will even encounter other members of the Patagonia Big Five along the way including guanacos, huemul deer, Andean condor, and nandu (or lesser rhea).

Stargazing in the north Astro-lovers will find a slice of heaven in Chile’s northern reaches. The Atacama Desert and the adjacent Elqui Valley are rain-free, cloud-free, highly elevated stretches of land that promise spectacular starry skies. Several major observatories, one of which claims the title as the world’s first International Dark Sky Sanctuary, dot the remote landscape.

Cruise to the end of the world Board a luxury expedition vessel and navigate through one of the most remote corners of the planet, Tierra del Fuego. As you cruise through these Chilean waters, you'll learn about those who have gone before you — Ferdinand Magellan, Sir Francis Drake, and Charles Darwin to name a few — while setting out on epic excursions to Cape Horn National Park with Zodiac landings to stunning glaciers, hikes through Magellanic woods and sub-Antarctic rainforests, and wildlife spotting endeavors in search of the resident whales, dolphins, penguins, condors, and elephant seals. Not adventurous enough? Consider taking flight on a once-in-a-lifetime fly/cruise expedition to Antarctica out of Punta Arenas.

THE GOOD OUTDOORS If being outside is good for your health, then Scotland serves up the best kind of medicine. By Haley Beham

A

quick Google search on the health benefits of being outside brings up a number of reasons to head outdoors. Besides the dose of daily vitamin D, being outside boosts your energy, mood, and immune system; enhances your creativity and helps you focus; melts away stress; and fights against depression. Unlike the United States, Scotland has the right to roam, which means its citizens and visitors have access to enjoy the Scottish lands and waters, regardless of who owns them. In search of a creativity recharge and the chance to relinquish some of the everyday life stressors, I packed my bags for Scotland with the promise of outdoor adventure. Admittedly, I was a bit nervous about the intensity of the hiking and biking involved with my planned itinerary. However, I soon discovered that outdoor adventure in Scotland is less about strenuous activity and more about experiencing the abounding natural beauty. In Inverness, I reached a small dock on Loch Ness where I was provided with a fully waterproof suit to wear for my zodiac transfer to Urquhart Castle. Before gunning the engine, my guide Tony shouted, “Hold onto your breakfast! We zipped down the loch past shorelines covered with trees where only a few houses dotted the landscape. After a few donuts on the loch, our journey continued to the castle ruins, which sit on a rocky promontory.

I only had a short amount of time to enjoy my refreshments before being fitted with my bike and helmet for our 19-mile bike ride through the Scottish countryside. It was beautiful, but it wasn’t until we arrived at Kinloch Lodge in Sutherland that I really began to take in my breathtaking surroundings. Kinloch Lodge is just one estate in Wildland’s expanding portfolio of Highland properties. Its owners Anne and Anders Holch Polvsen are the largest private landowners in Scotland. They have a 200-year vision for rewilding the Highlands and have already seen success with greater wildlife diversity and regeneration of the Caledonian pine forests. Their lodges each have a ScandiScot design aesthetic, which is both cozy and cool. Think moody wall colors and clean lines paired with soft furs tossed over leather and bentwood chairs. Next it was time to stroll through the trees with a downhill trek to the river, the distinctive peaks of Ben Loyal and a backdrop of a white, overcast sky following me every step. Along the way, my guide Myles stopped to speak about the mushrooms or trees we passed on the

path. Before I knew it, dark grey and blue clouds began to roll in. I stopped to put on my rain pants as the winds started to pick up and rain began to fall. We were heading towards a bothy (an old shepherd’s cottage), where the promise of a warm lunch spurred me on through 50-mile per hour winds. At one point I started chuckling to myself. A gust of wind nearly knocked me over, but even in the wind and rain, this was the most fun I'd had in a long time. I could feel the weight of everyday pressures lifting. The bothy’s long table filled with a hearty spread of meats, cheeses, breads, and warm soup was a welcome sight. A warm fire was crackling in the fireplace at one end, a picture window framing the loch outside on the other end. That evening at the lodge, I felt myself further unwinding. After a delicious dinner at nearby Lundies House, I came down to the sitting room sans shoes, (apparently a normal thing for guests at Kinloch) and curled up in a chair next to the fireplace. The room was lit by the soft glow of candles and the fire crackling beside me. There were sweets set on the table and teapots filled with hot tea. The liquor cabinet was also available. I cupped a mug of tea with two hands and slid back into my chair. In that moment, I embraced the comfort and peace enveloping me.

On yet another memorable day, we set out from Glenfeshie, a favorite home of the Polvsens. The skies were overcast, but I witnessed a shift in weather during the hike. I turned to see a full rainbow stretching across the horizon. Then, as the weather tends to do in Scotland, it shifted again. A light rain began to fall just as a picnic lunch was served. For protection, we sat huddled under the broad branches of a grouping of trees looking out into the fields where we could see three white horses grazing. Myles pulled out his copy of “The Living Mountain” by Nan Shepherd and read the following passage while we ate: “Yet often the mountain gives itself most completely when I have no destination, when I reach nowhere in particular, but have gone out merely to be with the mountain as one visits a friend with no intention but to be with him.” The night before I departed the Highlands, I sat in front of the fireplace at Killiehuntly Farmhouse letting the heat warm my back. As two musicians serenaded us with traditional Scottish tunes I was completely enchanted by how perfect the moment felt. Scotland had captured my heart and soul. It had given me the best medicine of all.

OVER THE RIVER AND THROUGH THE WOODS One of the last undiscovered regions in Europe, Bosnia & Herzegovina stands poised to become one of the world’s most attractive adventure hubs. By Elizabeth Frels

A

tormented past and fractured infrastructure doesn’t seem to be stopping Bosnia & Herzegovina from making a splash on the international travel stage. According to the World Tourism Organization, this small but mighty country is slated to boast the third highest tourism growth rate in the world between 1995 and 2020. So what’s there to love? The pristine central Dinaric Alps attract hikers and walkers. The Mediterranean and Alpine climates welcome all-season lovers. Three rivers — including the deepest river canyon in Europe — transform white water rafting into a national pastime. Vast tracks of wild and untouched nature lead to hidden historical gems, adding a unique twist to any typical trek. Close proximity to popular neighbors such as Croatia and Montenegro make it an easy add-on to any Balkans itinerary. Here is how Ker & Downey suggests adventurers make the most out of this up-and-coming playground in a single week.

DAY 1 | DIVE INTO SARAJEVO

DAY 5 | HIKE THE HERZEGOVINIAN HIMALAYAS

The capital of Bosnia & Herzegovina just so happens to also be one of the most fascinating cities in Eastern Europe. East collides with West as Catholic and Orthodox cathedrals as well as mosques and synagogues coexist side by side. This multicultural integration serves as a beacon of hope for peace and tolerance following decades of historical turbulence. An entire day spent in Sarajevo will allow you to witness this melding firsthand. Set out on a guided tour through the 15th century Old Town, including lunch at Bascarsija Square. Take a stroll across the Latin Bridge, famous for the assassination of Franz Ferdinand. Retrace the Siege of Sarajevo — from the Tunnel of Hope to Sniper Alley to the Republic of Srpska — with a local who lived through it as a child. Overnight in Sarajevo.

Prenj is widely considered one of the most enchanting mountains in Bosnia & Herzegovina. At its peak (7,070 feet) is a war memorial dedicated to Tito along with the other men and women who crossed over the mountain in 1943 during some of the country’s most trying times. A hike through the coniferous forest towards the Prenj peaks, Otiš and Zelena Glava, is stunning, especially during the summer months. Overnight in Konjic.

DAY 6 | CANYONING THE RAKITNICA Plunge into the spectacular Rakitnica, Europe's most unexplored canyon. You will need to swim, dive, climb, float, and jump to overcome many of the hurdles Rakitnica presents, but thankfully you will be rewarded with several small beaches along the canyon allowing breaks for meals and photos. Overnight in Konjic.

DAY 2 | TREK TO LUKOMIR An hour southwest of Sarajevo rests the Olympic mountain Bjelašnica and tiny village of Umoljani, your starting point for an unforgettable scenic hike across Obalj mountain. Your final destination is Lukomir, the highest and oldest village in Bosnia & Herzegovina. It is also considered an official cultural landscape and national heritage site. You will experience up close the traditional Bosnian lifestyle retained in this mountain village during dinner and an overnight stay at a local Farmville. Overnight in Lukomir.

DAY 3 | BIKE TO BORAČKO LAKE Descend the mountain from Lukomir on a thrilling guided bike tour following the Studeni Creek over Visočica mountain to Boračko Lake, the mountain-eye of Herzegovina. For an added adventure, consider ending your day with a “glamping” experience along the shores of the lake. Overnight at Boračko Lake.

DAY 4 | RAFT ON NERETVA RIVER The largest river in the eastern Adriatic basin, Neretva stands out for its crystal clear, drinkable water. A rafting float is certainly exhilarating, but it is gratefully filled with plenty of breaks for swimming and dining on delicious barbecue lunches riverside. Your day concludes in Konjic, a town renowned for its well-preserved Ottoman era Stara Cuprija (Old Bridge). Hidden in the hills is one of the best-kept military secrets in Yugoslav history, Tito’s Bunker, which was built to survive a nuclear attack seven times stronger than that in Hiroshima. Overnight in Konjic.

Photos: Top Left: Canyoning in Bosnia; Top Right: The town of Mostar; Bottom Left: Lukomir, the highest village in Bosnia; Bottom Right: Mountain biking in Bosnia and Herzegovina

History and adventure collide on a full-day biking tour through some of the country’s most important villages and sites. The first stop is Međugorje, a famous Catholic pilgrimage site known for its “crying” bronze statue of Jesus. Next, pedal to Kravice Waterfalls, a natural phenomenon, where you will have the chance to lunch amid the impressive falls. Follow the Neretva River to the medieval Ottoman-era gem of Počitelja for a quick wander through the old town and a climb up the fortress for panoramic views over the river. You will then arrive in Blagaj, a medieval town located on the Buna river in Mostar’s backyard. This is an enchanting spot for a coffee break with its blue spring waters and wonderfully preserved tekke. Finally, arrive in Mostar, named after the mostari 'bridge keepers' who guarded the Stari Most (Old Bridge) over the river. Here you will have a chance to visit the city's cultural-historical monuments, including the Old Bridge (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), Old Town, Kriva ćuprija, and Karađoz-bey's mosque. Overnight in Mostar.

THE

SHOT ONE PICTURE, ONE MOMENT, ONE MEMORY CAPTURED BY PHOTOGRAPHER JAMES GIFFORD

I spent two years working in Botswana on a photographic project in the southwest corner of Chobe National Park, Savute. It was during a remarkable period when the Savute Channel — a river that hadn’t flowed for 30 years until 2010 — was flowing again. As the channel naturally receded each year, there was a small window of about two weeks, when huge catfish would swim upstream. I began to notice a few leopards learned quite quickly how to catch the slippery prey from the murky water. Photographing this wonderous behaviour became my top priority. It was halfway through my second year, when a drought had reduced the channel to a handful of muddy pools, that I got my opportunity. I spent weeks waiting for the perfect shot, rotating between the pools when a female leopard finally strode nonchalantly into the mucky water. She emerged triumphant only seconds later with her prey and I had my shot! Leopards are known for their adaptability. It was unprecedented how little time it took them to not only recognize a new food source and design an optimum hunting strategy, but also to overcome their innate dislike of getting wet. In a world where the human-instigated threats of poaching, habitat loss, and global warming loom large, perhaps it is this sort of adaptability that shines a ray of hope for the future of our wildlife kingdom.

As a multiple award-winning photographer, writer, and videographer, James Gifford has been based in Botswana for 15 years, from where he runs specialist photographic safaris across Africa. His images have featured in numerous international publications and have been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world. His latest book, Savute: Botswana’s Wildlife Kingdom, was the product of two years spent in the field. When not guiding safaris or creating content, he takes every opportunity to get into the bush to capture images that can influence the way we think about the world and conserve the bounty of wildlife that still exists on our planet. www.jamesgifford.co.uk | @jamesgiff
