The apparent divergence in image sensors between the Nikon D90 12.3MP and the Canon EOS Rebel T1i is 15.1 mega-pixels, and 12.3MP respectively. If those specs were all the information you had, then it would appear pretty self-evident that the Rebel T1i, is the better SLR for the money here. Unfortunately for an overwhelmed camera buyer, that's not necessarily the case. There were better existing image sensors (Canon 40D) that might have been a preferable choice here. I'm certain you've read in some of my previous writing, that cramming more megapixels doesn't instantly create great photographs. The image sensor must be able to handle the extra megapixels. If the Canon Rebel T1i wants to have a more tempting megapixel ranking, with a sensor that is really smaller than the Nikon D90 DX DX image sensor, then they need to use smaller pixels, and herd them a little closer together on the image sensor. A more precise indicator of photo quality than megapixels, is pixel density. In this case, the Nikon D90 12.3MP comes in with much better numbers (lower is better here) of 3.3 vs 4.5 for the Rebel SLR T1i. Congested pixels is a detractor, but it doesn't stop there. It's been my experience, that buying more expensive stuff (digital SLR, computers, jewelry, weddings) usually means dropping additional dollars in the coming months. The lenses meant to work with high megapixel camera are designed for higher resolutions, and nearly always cost the consumer. The Canon EOS Rebel T1i and it's 15.1 megapixel needs a significantly superior lens instead of the ordinary kit lens EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS currently packaged by Canon I know it's way more dollars, but the Canon 18-200mm EF-S would have been a better choice for the Canon Rebel T1i. If that wasn't bad enough, you may be curious to know, that high density can degrade performance of ISO,dynamic range, and diffraction. The closer you examine the higher megapixels of the T1i, the less of a lead, it seems to have over the D90 Digital SLR. A reputable quantify of sensors using RAW data, is supplied by Dx-O-Mark. Dx-O-Mark testing is not currently available, but the Canon Rebel T1i uses the Canon 50D SLR sensor. The testing has shown, that the D90 image sensor is superior to the Canon 50D SLR sensor. The Canon 50D SLR test data should be very close to the T1i Dx-O-Mark testing, once it is published.
Getting the perfect Canon EOS Rebel T1i, is never an easy thing, especially with the way digital technology is constantly changing. Fortunately, there are plenty of helpful websites online, that can narrow down your search and help you find the Canon EOS Rebel T1i camera with all the features important to you.
