One of the flowers that are easy to recognize is the rose. However, compared to the other flowers out there, the rose is pretty tricky to draw and will require a bit of a methodical approach to it.

Drawing Your First Rose The steps on how to draw a rose will take more than just simply drawing a certain symmetry of circles and curves but the tools you'll be using will be pretty much the very same things you need for any pencil sketching project. You'll need a few sheets of drawing paper, an eraser, and a number two pencil or a different number that you're more used to. Make sure to use a thicker kind of paper in case you're making your kids do the drawings themselves.

Instead of using the usual circle or oblong in the middle of the sheet, begin with a pentagon instead. If your kids are having a difficult time trying to draw a pentagon, you can draw a circle and make five equally distant points all around it to serve as the guide.

Connect these five points via straight lines from one point to the next.

Moving forward, at the center of the pentagon-like shape, draw five petals at the very center. After drawing the initial five petals, draw another layer of petals right after the ones at the center. Keep drawing layers of petals until you reach around four layers of rose petals in your sketch.

Remember to highlight the curves of the petals to add accent and shades. The shades plus additional highlights and accents will make the petals look more realistic. Now that you're done with the petals, it's now time to draw at least one leaf positioned under the petals. Add a stem connecting the leaf and the petals as it extends downward.

By now the rose will almost look complete. Remember to add shades and accents to your sketch to give it a more lifelike tone to it. If you have pastel colors lying around somewhere, you may use them to add color to the sketch. Make sure to go along the patterns set out in the highlights. Note that younger kids and tots will need assistance with coloring the sketch. Make sure that they don't put the pencil or the pastel colors in their mouths as these can be quite toxic.
