Greg Woodard:

“The Origin of the Organic Patina”

Tom Gilleon’s paintings portray the spirit and enchantment of the West, his artwork grounded in the geography, history and narrative of life there. A master of color and composition, Gilleon manipulates formal elements to depict timehonored Western themes in new and inventive ways. His trademark teepee paintings suggest a mythical glow, as if illuminated by the moon or glowing embers within. Greg Woodard uses a unique patina process that allows each edition its own color and texture. He has always valued experimentation and innovation in order to further his artistic growth. Each of his pieces tells a story; and he shows this through the interaction between human and animal, expressing how they are affected. His work is steeped in rich symbolism, and the weathered texture of his sculptures belies his contemporary perspective on the history of the West.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

R. TOM GILLEON

R. Tom Gilleon was born in 1942, and raised by his grandparents in the tiny outpost of Starke, Florida, near the storied banks of the Suwannee River. Gilleon’s grandfather had immigrated to the United States from Scotland. His grandmother, a full-blooded Cherokee, was descended from a band of tribal members who refused to partake in the infamous Trail of Tears. Gilleon has garnered many top honors for his artwork. The Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville, Georgia, selected Gilleon’s painting “Northern Plains” for its permanent collection. Gilleon was the featured artist for the 2009 Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival. In March 2013, his painting, “Hair Apparent,” set a record at auction. He is the first living artist to have a solo show at the C.M. Russell Museum: Let Icons Be Icons: The Art of R. Tom Gilleon, August 16-December 28, 2013.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

GREG WOODARD

Greg Woodard was born in Prescott, Arizona in 1958. Though he took a few art classes in high school, he is largely self-taught. He began by carving decoys and went on to become a fivetime Best of Show winner at the Ward World Competition, and the World Class winner in 1992 with a preening American kestrel. In 2000, he captured the World category in interpretive sculpture with a rendition of a prairie falcon chasing several swallows. To date, he is the only artist to have won both decorative and interpretive categories at the world level. Museum collections and public installations include the Ella Sharp Museum in Jackson, Michigan; the Ward Museum in Salisbury, Maryland; the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, Wisconsin; Union Depot in Ogden, Utah; and Verde Canyon Railroad in Clarkdale, Arizona. His work is featured in the book, Greg Woodard’s Art of Bird Sculpture by Kurt M. Robinette. Greg’s work has appeared in national publications including Southwest Art Magazine, Western Art and Architecture and Western Art Collector Magazine.

Created digitally from fourteen original paintings and computer sequenced, “Hungry Fox Equinox” is the second of three digital installation art pieces Gilleon has created since the project began in 2012. Expanding on his signature “tipi” or “lodge” series, where the artist has refined composition and color, digital media opens up new creative territory. The #1/6 edition of “Hungry Fox Equinox” is part of the permanent collection of the C.M. Russell Museum, Great Falls, Montana.

Three Wise Men, Digital Installation, 49.5″ x 102″

Comprised of twenty-one digital paintings, “Three Wise Men” is a study in interpretive portraiture. The transitions are sequenced to show the stages in the creation of a work of art. Using historic photographs as reference , a pencil sketch progresses to a contemporary treatment in oil. The viewer is invited to consider how an artists’ rendition of the subject can bring forth alternative interpretations and reactions, and thus trigger something personal and unique.

Embracing the possibilities of HD monitors “Hungry Fox Equinox” and “Three Wise Men” are state of the art for digital art installation projects. 21
