TRAVIS WALKER
Inspired by the graphic style of Hiroshige, the expressionistic color of Vincent Van Gogh, and the Americana scenes of Edward Hopper, Walker brings his contemporary approach to color and composition to create unexpected and arresting scenes of the Jackson Hole region. In his latest body of work, Walker continues his exploration of plein air landscape painting, as well as historical and surrealistic work. The show includes a woodblock print of Sitting Bull, a painting of a burning RV, two paintings of the Little Horsethief Fire, and two paintings of the annual demolition derby at the Teton County Fairgrounds, among other work. “Thematically, the new work continues where I left off last summer, painting outside as much as possible,” Walker said. “I also continue to explore some imaginary themes/images that are produced in the studio but inspired by my plein air work. These are often surrealist landscapes or printmaking portraits.” Walker has been increasingly interested in making historical paintings, which will be represented in this show. Travis Walker is the founder and director of Teton Artlab, a nonprofit arts organization that provides studio space for artists. He was born in 1976 in Tokyo, Japan, and earned his BFA in Painting and Printmaking in 2000 from Virginia Commonwealth University. His first exhibition with Altamira was a sell-out show in September 2013. He was a 2013 Artist in Residence at the National Museum of Wildlife Art, and was featured in the February 2014 issue of Southwest Art. During the summer 2014, Walker was a featured artist in the View22 Project sponsored by the Jackson Hole Land Trust

THOM ROSS
Through various media including paintings, book illustrations, and “installation artwork,” Thom Ross updates Western history with bright colors, abstract forms and a contemporary style. Ross’s goal as an artist is to portray iconic American people and events in new ways in order to bring out a more complex story than the traditional historical myths. Indians playing croquet; General Custer riding off while balancing a table on his head; Sheriff Pat Garrett standing with shotgun in hands bracing against the cold of a wintry New Mexico morning – these are a few of the unique images depicted in Ross’s paintings. Thom Ross was born in San Francisco, California, in 1952, and raised in Sausalito. He earned a degree in fine arts from California State University, Chico, in 1974. His paintings are in private and public collections throughout the United States. In 2013 Ross was named the best living contemporary western painter in the country by True West Magazine. He currently lives, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he owns and runs Due West Gallery.
