CASE STUDY 1. ELLO MOBILE

Story Development

A MARKETING BUSINESS FOR SOCIAL CHANGE Client: Ello Mobile Marketing Agency: LUON What happens when a marketing business works for social change? Marketing agency LUON was looking for a better way to contribute to charity. And this is how Ello Mobile, the first company of its kind in Belgium was born. Based on a simple idea: People call, text and surf the web on their phones, Ello donates. While appealing to their generosity, Ello first provides real value to its users. 100% of Ello Mobile benefits go to a selection of charitable projects. Some of us care more for animals and want to support the WWF, others care for human rights. Some take the fate of refugees in Lebanon to heart. But why couldn’t everybody choose to donate to the cause they related to the most? With Ello, everybody choose to donate to the cause they related to the most. And it worked. Ello Mobile became the first profitable mobile phone company dedicated to non-profit. Relying on word-of-mouth rather than on a traditional advertising budget.

Role: To relaunch the brand in 2010, LUON was looking for ideas to reconnect Ello with its audience. The answer was the Ello family, a set of characters designed to liven up the brand. Each character has a unique role that makes Ello more personable. Mama, Papa, Ella, Youpi and O’papa, along with some friends all played a role. Most of all, the family mascot: Schmutzenbacker, a witty white rabbit stands for the spirit of Ello. The characters appeared on the Ello Mobile portal. Illustrations and animated stories, email marketing, social media presence and print communication. We designed all Ello Mobile stories from June 2009 until December 2016. Over the years Ello Mobile donated over a million euro to social and ecological projects. Process: Working closely with LUON’s copywriters and Creative Director, we first sat down to define the spirit of the brand and its objectives. We then developed the visuals and stories, starting with sketches. The collaboration went smoothly over the years as we safeguarded Ello with each update.

CASE STUDY 2. EU TRADE POLICY EXPLAINED

Story Development

EU TRADE POLICY EXPLAINED AND ANIMATED Client: European Commission / The Directorate General for Trade of the European Commission Agency and Production: European Service Network (ESN) Post Production and animation: Benuts In a time of uncertainty and resent, large governmental institutions like the European Commission face many communication challenges. How do you translate complex policies to a diverse audience? How can you make complex stories as simple as possible, but not simpler? Animation helped The Directorate General for Trade of the European Commission address those difficult questions. Whiteboard animation is a great medium to communicate the intricacies of economic policies. Role: Art direction, illustration, and live drawing. Process: Our task was to convey in a positive format several pages filled with technical terms to the general public. Starting with the documents, we used mind mapping to structure the story. We then designed a minimalist cartoon line aimed at live animation. The drawings were captured live on camera, ready for additional animation effects in post-production.

PUPPETS & ANIMATION CHARACTERS DESIGN Client: VTM / Levenslijn Kinderfonds Production: Roughcut Zeppe & Zikki characters are well known and loved by kids in Belgium. The series first aired on the Belgian Vlaamse Television network VTM. Now it also appears on its Frenchspeaking counterpart, RTL TĂŠlĂŠvision. Zeppe & Zikki is a program funded by the Loterie Nationale under the patronage of the IBSR (road police). Each episode revolves around road safety. The animation mixes puppetry and 2D animation. Role: redesigned the characters from scratch along with visual guidelines. The brief was simple: the two characters should be fun and attractive to kids. It also has to meet the production's technical requirements. The characters appear as puppets in the show, alongside 2D animated versions. They are also available as cuddly toys for kids among other iterations.
