Welcome Liverpool. The very name conjures up images of a glorious maritime history, world-beating musical heritage, two of the Premiership’s biggest football teams and not one, but two majestically different Cathedrals. This Northwest city and the surrounding City Region is certainly all those things, but it is also so much more. Liverpool is undergoing a thrilling renaissance, jump-started by its hugely successful year as European Capital of Culture.
It is now bulging with fabulous new shops, has buzzing new restaurants, hip hotels and trendy wine bars, as well as a world class cultural offering with more museums and galleries than anywhere outside of London. This year also sees the opening of the spectacular new Museum of Liverpool in its landmark building on the waterfront. And then there’s the people of Liverpool, who are famously friendly and will welcome you with pride. It is no surprise, in fact, that Liverpool is consistently voted as one of the top city break destinations by stylish travel bible Condé Nast Traveller. So come and enjoy a classic Champagne cocktail at the Panoramic, check out the very latest world class exhibition at Tate Liverpool, or snap up something gorgeous at the gleaming new Liverpool ONE in the heart of the city centre. This city bursts with energy, life, humour, and so much to do. Enjoy your visit – we know you will.

Liverpool oozes culture and heritage. The city has a glorious past as a mercantile hub and gateway to the New World, but today it is also a key destination for art lovers, fans of the theatre and museumgoers. Art Art is a huge theme for the city in 2011. Tate Liverpool will be staging a major René Magritte exhibition, called The Pleasure Principle, in the Summer. This will be the first big show of the Belgian Surrealist’s work in the UK for almost 20 years. There will also be a new Alice in Wonderland exhibition from November, exploring the influence of Lewis Carroll’s iconic stories and characters on modern and contemporary art.
Stroll around Albert Dock to drink in some of the history then take a trip across the Mersey on one of the river’s famous ferries to see the awe inspiring view of Liverpool Waterfront, one of the most recognised waterfronts in the world. Liverpool has a unique mix of contemporary and classic architecture too. There’s the soaring Gothic Revival Liverpool Cathedral, the biggest Anglican Cathedral in the UK – a climb to the top of the tower for the best views across the region is a must – and the modernist Catholic Cathedral, affectionately known as ‘Paddy’s Wigwam’ at the other end of Hope Street, whose vast stained glass crown floods the interiors with different colours. Then there is the stunning St George’s Hall, described by Prince Charles as the finest example of neo-classical architecture in the country, where you can explore the great hall, fascinating criminal court and judges’ chambers.
The city has numerous permanent art attractions too. Visit the Walker Art Gallery, the national gallery of the North – ask at reception for a helpful guide to the highlights, including works by Hockney, Degas, Turner and Rembrandt, all of which are housed on the first floor. Hope Street, Liverpool
Check out the Bluecoat, a distinctive Grade I listed arts centre, over 290 years old which offers an inspiring programme of visual art, music, dance, live art and literature. Across the Mersey at Port Sunlight on Wirral Peninsula is the Lady Lever Art Gallery, a beautiful, highly personal collection of fine and decorative arts. Or check out Liverpool’s world class public art, which stretches across the region. Take a trip up to Crosby Beach to see the Gormleys, the 100 cast iron life-size sculptures of Angel of the North artist Antony Gormley, standing and staring out to sea.

Music Think Liverpool, think The Beatles. The city is officially the World Capital of Pop, and the Fab Four are, of course, its most famous offspring.
The city also has a throbbing live music scene as well as numerous musical festivals worth checking out. Mojo is a rocking live music bar, where the drinks are mixed to perfection and the bands are awesome, and Liverpool is of course the home of the legendary Nation, the ultimate nightclub for party people. The city’s waterfront Echo Arena is the venue for big-name international acts such as Beyoncé, Elton John and Oasis and also plays host to the Liverpool Summer Pops Festival from July to August.
Liverpool Sound City May 19–May 21 Various Liverpool city centre locations www.liverpoolsoundcity.co.uk Taking place every May in the world’s most legendary music city, Sound City is now the largest live music festival and conference in the North, welcoming music lovers and business delegates from all over the world. Liverpool Sound City is the UK’s coolest boutique city festival.
Miles Kane, Liverpool Music Week
Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra
Liverpool Sound City is a fantastic festival of bands, DJs and artists happening over four days in May across many of the city’s top venues. Liverpool Music Week in November is another must see event, representing the UK’s biggest indoor Winter music festival. Or catch the annual Mathew Street Festival, centred around the famous street that is home to the Cavern Club. It takes place each year over the August Bank Holiday weekend and is one of Europe’s biggest free music events with rock and pop bands performing on live stages around the city centre. This weekend also plays host to Creamfields, one of the most popular outdoor dance festivals in the world.
And there’s more! Southport also stages a number of great music events, such as the Southport International Jazz Festival at the end of May, while Africa Oyé brings a taste of African music to Liverpool in June – a two day festival of African music and culture in Sefton Park.
Classical fans must take in a performance by the world renowned Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, led by the charismatic Chief Conductor Vasily Petrenko. You could always combine the classical with the popular by having a sneaky pint at The Philharmonic pub over the road beforehand, a famous haunt of the Fab Four. Other music institutions include Parr Street Studios, where everyone from Coldplay to Oasis, Grace Jones, Take That and even the Spice Girls has recorded. Liverpool Sound City

Non-negotiable is a trip to Beatles Story at Albert Dock, a brilliant tour through The Beatles’ lives, with fascinating memorabilia and insights from friends and family. You should also pop into the Cavern Club on Mathew Street, the most famous club in the world, for a lunchtime beer or some live music in the evening, or visit Mendips and 20 Forthlin Road in Allerton, the childhood homes of John Lennon and Sir Paul McCartney, that are now both National Trust properties.
But Liverpool really has every kind of music running through its veins. It also plays host to the International Guitar Festival of Great Britain on Wirral Peninsula each year, with classical music, jazz, rock, blues, country and flamenco guitar music being demonstrated at various venues in November.

Sport Liverpool is footy mad. It is home to two of the Premiership’s biggest football teams, making football a religion in the city and a topic that is the source of much heated debate in the city’s pubs.
Sport
Its inhabitants are cleanly divided between support for the Reds, or Liverpool FC, and the Blues, or Everton FC. The Reds, once again under King Kenny’s rule, have one of the largest trophy cabinets in football today, with an impressive 18 League titles, five European Cups and seven FA Cups. Founded in 1878, the Blues have always been at the forefront of English football and are a founding member of the Football League, winning their first match against Accrington in 1888. Wirral Peninsula’s own Tranmere Rovers have just as passionate a following, including celebrity fans such as Elvis Costello and Half Man Half Biscuit.

The Liverpool City Region is also renowned for golf and horse racing. England’s Golf Coast, the finest stretch of championship golf in the world, is home to three Royal Links courses and numerous other naturally beautiful golf courses. There is Royal Birkdale in Southport, Royal Lytham & St Annes, and Royal Liverpool at Hoylake on Wirral Peninsula, the second oldest links course in England, as well as home to one of the best collections of golf memorabilia outside St Andrews. Then there’s Aintree, the famous horse racing venue which hosts the John Smith’s Grand National, as well as several other major racing events. There is racing too at Haydock Park in St.Helens, with events throughout the year. Haydock Park Racecourse

St.Helen’s Rugby League Club
Besides these, the region also has a strong Rugby League tradition. St.Helens and Widnes both have massive followings for their teams. St.Helens RLC is one of the oldest members of the sport and has a fabulous new ground opening Autumn 2011 with an 18,000 capacity stadium and Sports Café Bar, while the Widnes Vikings are similarly one of the world’s first rugby league teams. In additional to live music, the Echo Arena Liverpool has become a top sporting venue hosting international events including the Davis Cup, Premier League darts, indoor football, boxing, Supercross and basketball giants, the Harlem Globetrotters. The waterfront will also become the focal point for the Liverpool Marathon in October where 12,000 runners will take on the 26.2 mile challenge around the city’s most famous landmarks.
It’s a British sporting institution. Running since 1839 when a horse called Lottery won the big race and a man called Captain Becher parted company with his horse at a now famous brook. Shop Liverpool is an image-conscious city, and its inhabitants like to look good, wear the very latest labels, and are never knowingly underdressed. As a result, Liverpudlians shop almost as passionately as they support football, and, fittingly, there is a new shiny retail development right in the heart of the city called Liverpool ONE. This is home to more than 160 famous high street names, from a giant, gleaming new John Lewis to an Apple Store, as well as ultra-hip fashion brands and cool independent boutiques such as designer store Flannels, Urban Outfitters and pretty country homewares store Cath Kidston.
Apple Store, Liverpool ONE
Shop
A giant new store, The Home Quarter, featuring all the top names in interiors from contemporary sleek Danish design to chic French glamour, has also just opened on Hanover Street on the edge of the shopping centre, as well as leading Spanish fashion chain Desigual’s first store outside of London. Both of the city’s football teams also have stores in Liverpool ONE (the Blues have cheekily called theirs Everton Two) so you can pick up the very latest home strip and associated footy paraphernalia.
Metquarter, Liverpool
In addition to every big high street name, Liverpool also has the exclusive Metquarter off Whitechapel, a designer shopping centre that houses decidedly select outlets such as Jo Malone, MAC, Kurt Geiger and Molton Brown, while Cavern Walks off Mathew Street is home to Vivienne Westwood and celebrity favourite Cricket, which gives fashion advice as well as selling über-fashionable, reassuringly expensive clothes and must-have handbags. Liverpool also specialises in numerous quirky shops. Bold Street is lined with independent boutiques and bohemian cafés, from underground record shop 3beat Records to Utility, a fantastic destination for contemporary modern design. Sleep Whether you want a posh bed for the night, a country house hotel or a groovy themed room, Liverpool has it all. The City Region has an impressively broad range of accommodation, from award winning guest houses to upmarket boutique hotels, in varying locations from the city centre itself to the heart of the countryside. One of the most gorgeous places to stay is Hope Street Hotel, the city’s first boutique hotel which opened five years ago near the Cathedrals and opposite the Philharmonic Hall. It’s located in the city’s perfectly preserved Hope Street Quarter, home to more Georgian buildings than Bath, no less, and combines cool, crisp comfort with top-notch, super-friendly service. Alternatively there is the fabulous four star Hard Days Night Hotel, right by Mathew Street in the city centre. Inspired by The Beatles it is supremely tasteful, understated and luxurious, a perfect temple to the Fab Four, in fact, with a throbbing cocktail bar and great value restaurant attached.

Exciting hotel news for 2011 is the opening of Hotel Indigo in the Summer. This will be a new £14 million luxury boutique hotel offering 151 stylish bedrooms as well as a Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill. The base2stay boutique concept hotel in the historic RopeWalks area opened last year. The hotel, located within the UNESCO World Heritage Site, is surrounded by some of the city’s best restaurants, museums, designer shops and bars. Housed in a former print works dating from the 1850s and having been painstakingly restored and redeveloped to retain its heritage features, it also has a modern and contemporary feel. There are gleaming designer bathrooms, free WiFi in every room, snazzy kitchens plus a 24/7 reception and concierge service. Rooms range from singles to deluxe two-floor suites.
In the heart of the city centre with an exclusive spa, Layla is a sophisticated fusion of styles, bringing together elements of the Victoria Age, Art Deco and contemporary design. Each room is individually designed with the highest attention to detail, and it is hotly tipped to become one of the Northwest’s finest luxury hotels.
Liverpool also has many serviced apartments which are ideally located for the shops and offer an affordable and flexible alternative to the hotels. Book into BridgeStreet in Liverpool ONE, which has a choice of stylish one, two and three-bedroom apartments, or have a look at Posh Pads, which offers particularly luxurious city centre serviced accommodation that can be booked nightly, weekly or monthly. Otherwise, try Cocoon at International Inn, a budget boutique pod hotel. Each cocoon is priced per room, not per person, and even comes with its own iPod docking station. Southport also has some lovely accommodation on offer at The Vincent as well as the beautiful boutique Ambassador Town House on Bath Street, while Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa is a sumptuous, rural affair set in 135 acres of lush parkland. Wirral Peninsula has historic country offerings that might be the ideal counter to frantic city centre sightseeing and shopping. Mere Brook House is a charming Edwardian country house, while the black and white luxury Grade II listed Hillbark Hotel in Frankby is steeped in history. Thornton Hall is also a four star hotel with a great spa and country setting. Lastly, don’t forget the stately home splendour of Knowsley Hall, although a minimum number of rooms usually have to be booked (ideal for groups visiting the races or girly spa breaks).

Explore Should you wish to escape from the bright lights and buzz of Liverpool, there are lots of award winning beaches and coastal walks nearby, plus stunning parks, botanic gardens and countryside spas where you can blow away the city cobwebs.
There’s plenty for adrenaline junkies too. West Kirby’s marine lake is a mecca for wind surfers and dinghy sailing, overlooking the Dee, while you can also waterski and sail in Southport or put the all-new Land Rover Freelander 2 through its paces on the specially designed off-road course at Land Rover Experience, Halewood, or watch one being constructed using the very latest production techniques at the famous car plant. Crosby also has a shiny new Lakeside Adventure Centre, a mecca for all forms of water sports from sailing to windsurfing and rowing. A day out with the Big Five at Knowsley Safari Park is well worth the trip out of the city, just eight miles away in the parklands around Knowsley Hall, and wildlife enthusiasts might also enjoy Martin Mere Wetlands Centre near Ormskirk, home to hundreds of rare and endangered ducks, geese, swans and flamingos. Go in the Spring and see the cute downy ducklings hatching, or from March to October you can explore the wetland area and meander through its beautiful waterways on a canoe safari, new for 2011.
Head across to Wirral Peninsula and stride out to Hilbre Islands Local Nature Reserve at West Kirby, not forgetting to check the tide timetable before you go! Explore the endless sand dunes along Sefton’s coast, be rejuvenated by refreshing winds as you stroll along Southport Pier or the Wirral Way with its fabulous views across to the Welsh hills, ducking the golf balls off the nearby golf course on your way. If that’s a little too energetic for you, opt for a relaxing day at the state of the art luxury spa at Formby Hall, a sumptuous oasis of peace and tranquility. Their immaculate treatment rooms are fitted out to the highest standards imaginable, and offer an extensive range of treatments and holistic therapies for both men and women. Gardening enthusiasts might like to learn all about wildflowers at the National Wildflower Centre, set in the tranquil Victorian Court Hey Park. Both Southport and Knowsley hold annual flower shows, too, with giant floral marquees as well as an array of attractions including crafts demonstrations, arts workshops and even dog obedience classes. Birkenhead Park is also worth a visit – this green oasis was the first public park in the country and its design provided inspiration for Central Park in New York.
Or visit Daresbury Village, the birthplace of Lewis Carroll – go into the Parish Church of All Saints and you can find a stained glass window featuring the author and many of the characters from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The historic and picturesque Hale Village is another great place to unwind with its quaint whitewashed cottages and colourful country gardens.
