Housing advocacy organisation Shelter NSW has also expressed concerns over a lack of affordable housing options in the plans. The group put forward a submission to the draft 1 master plans for Bays West outlining issues with the project, in relation to housing needs. Shelter NSW said in the submission that “these projects facilitate gentrification, and result in the dislocation of lowerincome workers.” They maintain that lower-paid workers who likely will be employed on the site will be heavily affected by the lack of affordable housing options.

The Greens have also criticised the Labor-led Inner West Council decision for a “15% levy on the site for affordable housing elsewhere,” rather than requiring that 30% of the site be social and affordable housing, as proposed by Greens Councillor Kobi Shetty and Independent John Stamolis. The Greens maintain that this 15% levy would “raise funds that could add to Council’s current portfolio of 19 affordable housing dwelling,” but “would deliver no new social or affordable homes within the huge Bays West precinct”.
The Bays West development has come under fire after the Greens, as well as a key NSW housing advocacy group, have criticised a lack of affordable housing included in the stage 1 draft master plan. As community submissions for the development located next to the White Bay Cruise Passenger Terminal in Glebe are under review, the Greens are calling on the government to include more social and affordable housing in the “highly significant Inner West public site.”

Shelter NSW additionally noted that the plan does not refer to an affordable housing target, despite having “clear targets” for infrastructure, heritage, and open space, as well as targets for gross floor areas aimed at residential, community and commercial use. Shelter NSW have criticised the absence of such a target, given that the plan contravenes the Eastern City District Plan’s requirement for a 10% Affordable Housing levy on all Government-owned Thesites.group have recommended that a “minimum 15% affordable housing levy be required on all residential, commercial, and retail gross floor areas within the Bays West Master Plan Communityprecinct.” and resident groups have been speaking out against the plans since the first glimpse of the project was announced in 2014. City Hub reported that The Glebe Society and the Rozelle Residents Action Group had fears the massive development would be ‘Barangaroo’ed’, referring to a lack of community consultation that occurred on another inner-city development. The Bays West development will include new housing and employment spaces, with a third of the development being dedicated to public open space. It will connect with the new Sydney West Metro line running from the CBD to Parramatta through a new station which will be called ‘The Bays’. The master plan for the Bays West Precinct acknowledges that the NSW Department of Planning and the Environment received community feedback about the opportunity to include social and affordable housing in the Underdevelopment.‘community and stakeholder engagement’ a quote from a ‘peak body’ is “Governmentincluded: ownership of much of the land in the Precinct offers a real opportunity to deliver high levels of social and affordable housing. However, as outlined in this submission, further work is needed to fully consider how adequate provision will be secured,” the submission reads. The Greens note that currently over 10,000 people have been approved for social housing, but are still waiting to be housed in NSW. “The developments associated with the Bays West sub-precincts provide a critical opportunity to help reduce the shortfall and ensure a community that is genuinely diverse.” A spokesperson from the Department of Planning and Environment said to City Hub that they “are working on an updated master plan and a rezoning package for Bays West Stage 1.”
In May, when the scoping plans were up for public exhibition, Minister for Infrastructure, Cities, Active Transport Rob Stokes announced that 250 dwellings including social housing were outlined in the plans. “This project will balance the needs of the local community and industry, with housing and jobs,” Stokes said. However, a statement from the Greens says that there is “no mandated social or affordable housing” included in the draft plan. They say that including social housing in the development is an “important opportunity to grow the state’s public housing portfolio without demolishing existing homes.”

Region 9 has the highest monthly bus use of the Sydney Bus Network, accounting for 21% of all bus trips in Sydney. However, significant changes introduced in December last year – including the removal of 25 bus routes and the modification of 23 other routes in the Randwick Council area – have impacted the functionality of the public transport Inservices.Waverley the adjustment to Region 9 merged 6 routes into just 2 routes, which the Mayor says disrupts efficient journeys from the beach to the CBD. “There is now no longer a direct service to the city with all services having to change at Bondi Junction Interchange,” Cr Masselos said. “The well-used 378 service was cancelled and replaced by the 440, and then the confusing 379, with people ending up at Bondi when they really wanted to travel to RandwickBronte.”
By SASHA FOOT Waverley Council has made a public plea to the NSW government to reverse bus privatisation, as bus-service cancellations and route changes have decreased commuter satisfaction. Waverley Council and Randwick Council, which make up Region 9 of the Sydney Bus Network, made submissions to a Parliamentary inquiry into the privatisation of bus services earlier this Waverleyyear. Mayor, Paula Masselos, expressed in a statement that bus services now exist as “commercial operations... geared to making a profit.”
Secretary of the Tram and Bus Division of the Rail, Tram and Bus Uniou David Babineau, said that the privatisation of buses is making working conditions less desirable for workers, which in turn creates driver shortages. “Being a bus driver was once a highly sought after, good, secure job. The NSW Government has taken that away and now commuters and workers are suffering for it,” he Babineausaid.noted that the state government’s choice to remove free bus fares “is actively disincentivising people” from joining the profession.

Zara Powell, a Mascot resident affected by the route changes to Region 9, told City Hub that her journeys to the CBD are now less direct and lengthy. “The buses near my house only take me to Redfern or Mascot Station, which means I have to catch a train to get to the CBD,” she said. “If I want to go straight to the city, I have to walk fifteen minutes to Gardeners Road.”

Waverley Council is currently consulting our community about a six-month trial to transform Hall Street into a pedestrian friendly space with outdoor dining, street gardens and creative lighting. Council received a $500,000 grant through the state government’s Streets as Shared Spaces program to revitalise the popular beachside shopping strip between Gould Street and Glenayr Avenue by introducing a range of proposed measures including dedicated outdoor dining spaces on both sides of the street, introduction of a one-way street (between Gould and O’Brien) with no loss of parking, introduction of a new plaza space with more greenery and improved signage and lighting to make the space accessible for day and nighttime trading. The Hall Street upgrade will be piloted for six months and we have been busy consulting with our residents and businesses to help inform a range of proposed temporary measures in the trial.

Bronte Pool improvements Waverley Council recently voted to investigate options for resurfacing Bronte Pool to make it safer for swimmers and better equipped to withstand hazardous surf conditions which have seen large pieces of the pool surface damaged or break away.
Council’s submission to the inquiry specified that culling bus routes limited bus frequency and made trips more difficult for those living on modified routes. The council requested that the buses return to state ownership, and that the government remedy the route changes.

BY SHARLOTTE THOU
Teachers, nurses, transport and public sector workers are at breaking point because their wages aren’t keeping pace with the rising costs of living and their conditions have been stripped down by this NSW Liberal government. We’ve seen wages and working conditions deteriorate over many years and now with the pressures of inflation rising exponentially, workers from key industries have had no option but to take to the streets to demand Allaction.public sector and essential service workers deserve fair wages and vastly improved conditions. For far too long these workers have been speaking out about extreme staffing shortages, safety concerns and inadequate resourcing across our public services with no action from the government to address them. These workers have tried asking, they have tried negotiating but the government hasn’t listened. The 3% wage rise which was recently announced by the NSW Coalition government does not come close to covering the rising costs of living, nor will it fix the decades of underfunding of our schools, hospitals and public transport networks. The Greens stand firm in our support for these workers and we reject the unfair public sector wage cap. We support mandated staff to patient ratios in hospitals. We recognise the need to fix chronic staff shortages in schools, for urgent intervention to alleviate unreasonable workloads, and for genuine investment to address long-standing safety issues. We know that improved conditions and wages aren’t won easily. It’s clear that when all else has failed, taking industrial action is the most powerful way to stand together and collectively advance our rights. The Greens will always support your right to strike, and we stand in fierce opposition to the NSW Liberal/National Government’s recent announcement to impose heavy fines on unions for taking strike action. A spokesperson for Create NSW said the renewal will support the presentation of “exclusive local and international exhibitions and programs.”
The architect for the project will be selected through a design competition, which Create NSW Interim Chief Executive Annette Pitman hopes will help “reimagine one of the country’s most revered cultural institution through new and expanded exhibition and public space.”
“The transformation will enable dedicated spaces for showcasing the breadth of the museum’s collection, providing greater access to these objects.”
Save the Powerhouse (STP) told CityHub that “despite consistent protests against the government’s plans for [the Powerhouse Museum] …they appear to have had no effect.” They stated that while community members dissented at community consultations organised by the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences “there are no signs that their voices were heard.”
According to STP’s conveners Patricia Johnson and Jean-Pierre Alexandre, the premise is ill-suited to display fashion, which requires a “small intimate space”, as opposed to the current Powerhouse Museum’s high ceilings and “majestic, industrial halls”. They additionally criticised the proposed focus on fashion, which “targets a very narrow section of the Architectpublic”.Lionel Glendenning, designer of the Powerhouse’s conversion from the former Ultimo Power Station estimated that a “meaningful upgrade” should cost around $250 million, instead of the $500 million allocated to the project. STP confirmed they have “no objection” to smaller upgrades such as the modification of display areas as necessary but believe there “is no justification for the wholesale destruction planned”. STP also expressed concerns over the absence of the “invaluable Harwood Building” in the draft plans, which is currently used for essential exhibition preparation, reference, and local storage. The group also said they will focus on “publicising the fact that a change of government could considerably benefit the Powerhouse Museum and its future” in the lead-up to the upcoming state election. no signs that their voices were heard Modelled view of planned Powerhouse Ultimo from Harris Street and William Henry Street. THIS DEADLY HEART
Skout Wylie Kirk… Skout is the youngest of my five children. He is the exclamation mark on our family, born in the year of the Water Dragon under a supermoon. I remember when I was pregnant with him, a beautiful old woman in her late 80’s approached me, traced in this wonderful light, she held my round belly in her hands and told me that this baby was coming to change the world. Inside of Skout, in the place where whispers carry memories, is a knowing and a kindness, a connection to more than just this place and time. It is in his smile, in his dimple that sits like a trademark on his left cheek. It is in his eyes and how he sees the world, in his voice and how he teaches me. Skout is radiant love and warmth, he exists in a kaleidoscope of colour and speaks of choosing me from a place in the Thestars.daybefore Skout was to turn 10 years old – 7th May 2022 - he limped from school on the Friday afternoon, ankle and foot ballooning out over the top of his sock, his jogger doing its best to keep the swelling contained - His ankle close to double the size of what it should normally be. I chastised him about playing rugby at school with kids who don’t know how to tackle properly, and he declared his innocence emphatically. We went through the usual check list…a trip, a rolled ankle, did he knock it, did someone step on it, were you bitten by a spider or an ant? Skout assured me it was none of these. When we got home, I administered ice, elevation and compression and gave him some Nurofen for the aching pain and an antihistamine just in case. By bedtime Skout’s other ankle began to swell and too his wrists and hands. Within 24 hours every possible joint on his body was swollen, aching and multiple pox-wart-like bumps had appeared on his elbows. It became so overwhelming for his inflamed body that he had lost his appetite declining even birthday cake. Living in Sydney it can be easily taken for granted how close and accessible a world leading children’s hospital is to our home. On presentation at the emergency department Skout was wheeled straight through for examination and so it began the repetition of every little detail of the, what, why, how, where, when of Skouts days were scrutinised. Calming and consoling my frightened little boy while holding my breath waiting to hear negative results to the scary stuff like lymphoma and leukemia… exhale. “Has Skout always had a murmur in his heart?” He hadn’t had a murmur… Ever. Besides recurring ear infections and tonsilitis which saw them be removed at age four and grommets in at two my bunanay budyarra [little boy] was a healthy happy and very active child. It was a young resident doctor doing his rotation with the rheumatology team that put the pieces together. Swollen joints, rheumatic pox rash, changed heart rhythm and Strep A markers in the blood that had climbed from a usual 100 to close to 2000! Chest x-rays, a long and detailed ultrasound on the heart, pain relief and high dosage of anti-inflammatory medication, Skout was admitted to hospital with suspected ARF [Acute Rheumatic Fever] – not seen at Sydney Children’s Hospital for nearly forty years! I’m not going to lie, I had never heard of ARF and innocently asked was it an old-fashioned illness like Scarlet Fever and quote, ‘like from Little House on the Prairie’? ARF primarily affects the heart, joints, and central nervous system. Of these symptoms, the autoimmune cardiac sequelae are the most dreaded for it causes fibrosis of heart valves, leading to crippling valvular heart disease, heart failure, strokes, endocarditis, and death. To hear and comprehend this was happening to my child was highly distressing and baffling. To learn that ARF if not treated in time leads to Rheumatic Heart Disease [RHD] which causes permanent damage to the heart was a frightening consideration. ARF results from a throat or skin infection caused by Strep A bacteria and if not managed properly, it can lead to heart failure, disability, and premature death. It is also entirely PREVENTABLE!!! An entirely preventable childhood disease that now barely exists among white Australians but is the leading cause of death in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. Heart Failure – Australia’s Shame… How do I know this? Three of Skout’s specialist doctors at SCH had practiced medicine for some years in remote communities in the Northern Territory and Far-north-west Queensland and saw the debilitating effects ARF and RHD were having on Aboriginal children who did not have the access to expert medical knowledge, preventative penicillin, or basic hygiene resources like hand soap. How do I know this? My husband Brett and I attended a NAIDOC screening of the documentary/film-led advocacy campaign TAKE HEART. DEADLY HEART hosted by producer and Rheumatic Heart Disease Australia [RHDA] CEO Aunty Vicki Wade and the Deadly Scientist OAM Corey Tutt. The impactful and literally heartbreaking film is a campaign for change. It is a call to our government to listen and assist in funding the community-led services that will prevent ARF and RHD and keep families strong and together. Taking care of one another is at the very heart of what community is, so to have a feeling of despair, hopelessness, and deep profound grief as each week two deadly little brothers and sisters die at the hands of a very preventable disease that other first world-developed countries have eradicated is a rage-filled disgrace. Have a HEART… The book The Celestine Prophecy says there are no coincidences… I won’t get into philosophy but what I will get into is truth telling and problem solving. Skout has recovered well thanks to the very fortunate access we have to preventative penicillin injections that he now has in hospital every 28 days for the next ten years. Skout has a team of doctors guiding us in his health and healing and the best news of all as of two weeks ago Skout’s heart has returned to being a strong and very brave heart. It is hard to find the right words to describe our gratitude, so we want to show it through our actions. We want the same outcome for every Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander family that we have had, we want to be advocates for their stories and all of the deadly brothers and sisters in remote communities who are unnecessarily suffering and being overlooked by our government and health systems. We want to share Skout’s story and invite people in to support and champion the eradication of ARF and RHD in Australia. A collective empathy is needed more than ever before so please join us.

Pyrmont commuters struggle after public transport slashed
Horseman said that he knew there was a ferry travelling from Blackwattle Bay in Glebe to Barangaroo that would stop at However,Pyrmont. when Horseman moved to Pyrmont, he says he found out the ferry wasn’t running anymore, “because the Transport Minister decided it wasn’t worth it”. “In city-fringe suburbs you assume that transport is not going to be an issue,” Horseman said. The reinstatement of the ferry route to Barangaroo from Pirrama Park Wharf in Pyrmont is one of the PPPTF’s goals in its Lesleycampaigning.Bentley, convener of the PPPTF, says that the “F10 ferry passes by Pirrama Park and doesn’t stop.” “Where is the logic? It was providing a much-needed linkage to Barangaroo and Glebe,” Bentley said. A 6 month trial of a temporary ondemand route ran from Pirrama park to Barangaroo during 2019, but the route was Currently, discontinued.thePirrama Park ferry stop does not have any active public routes.
RESIDENTS TURN TO UBER AND TAXIS Horseman, who travels to Barangaroo for work, says it’s faster to walk 40 minutes than it is to take public transport. “It’s actually faster to get from Strathfield to the CBD than it is from Pyrmont.” Trains to Wynyard from Strathfield train station in Sydney’s west, which is roughly 12km away from Barangaroo, can take anywhere between 31 minutes on the T2 line and just 20 minutes on the T1 line. Pyrmont is located roughly 2km from Barangaroo, yet commuters say catching the bus to Barangaroo can take over 40 “That’sminutes.why people are choosing to spend their money if they can, on Ubers, which then goes into private pockets rather than back into public services.”
BY ERIN MODARO
Following a slash in bus routes and the discontinuation of a temporary ferry route connecting Pyrmont to Barangaroo, Pyrmont residents are sharing their struggles with commuting to and from the CBD. The Pyrmont Peninsula Public Transport Forum (PPPTF), a long-time campaigner for NSW government to address the issues, recently held a meeting with the community to discuss their Amongconcerns.theconcerns raised are limited stops on the 389 bus route, an essential service connecting Pyrmont to the CBD, as well as re-instating a ferry route. The NSW government removed key stops along the 389 route in January.
NO WORD FROM TRANSPORT MINISTER
The PPPTF has continued to campaign for their three short-term requests: a bus stop for a drop off point on York Street, a bus stop on Murray Street, and the reinstatement of the ferry stop at Pirrama Park. Tram and Bus Secretary for the Rail, Tram and Bus Union David Babineau attended the most recent PPPTF meeting to discuss transport issues with residents. Babineau told City Hub that “transport has lost sight of the fact that they are supposed to manage the delivery of services, and instead they are more focused on the managing of contracts.”

Pyrmont residents explained to City Hub why an inner-city peninsula has become a point of isolation in Sydney due to a lack of appropriate public transport. “I moved to Pyrmont Last year, on the assumption that there was going to be reasonable transport links with the city,” a resident, and member of the PPPTF, James Horseman said. “I’d lived in the inner east previously, and had basically door to door bus services from Woolloomooloo to Barangaroo, and [Pyrmont] was touted as a similar sort of thing.”
The PPPTF have appealed to state member for Sydney Alex Greenwich, who has previously addressed letters to NSW Transport Minister David Elliott about the concerns over Pyrmont’s connectivity. On June 23, Greenwich and Sydney’s Mayor Lord Clover Moore addressed another letter to Elliot calling for the minster to meet with a “delegation of residents” to discuss the community Theconcerns.PPPTF say they have received no response from Elliott. The group has started a petition, calling for the minister to take action. Bentley urges Pyrmont residents to “contact Alex Greenwich and ask him to attend the next forum on 27th August”. You can’t get home after midnight
Carla Parton, another Pyrmont resident and active member of the PPPTF, says she has recently also been turning to private transport between Pyrmont and the “YouCBD.can’t get home after midnight. Because there’s no public transport,” Parton said to City Hub “I tried to get in a taxi last night... and [the driver] said it would be $40 to get to Pyrmont. And that was from Parton,Barangaroo.”whoworks in Barangaroo, says she used to take the bus from Pirrama Road in Pyrmont, and it would drop her at the corner of King Street and Martin Place in the CBD. “Now there is no bus stop on King Street, and the bus takes you straight to Town Hall,” Parton said. “The bus goes past so many bus stops that it could stop at. But it just doesn’t.”
Pyrmont residents struggle with commutes to the CBD, after bus routes slashed and a ferry route from Pirrama Park (pictured above) was discontinued.
He said that Transport for NSW is lacking in comprehensive community “Basicallyconsultation.what they say is, you need to contact us,” Babineau said about TfNSW. “Otherwise [TfNSW] are just going to stick up signs and say what we are going to do. Which is pretty sad in terms of simple community engagement.”

The Kamay Ferry Wharves development in Sydney’s South has received approval from the Planning Minister. Photo: NSW Government
“Majority of the community is really strongly opposed,” Cr Veitch said.
As the planning for the Kamay Ferry Wharves has been classified a ‘controlled action’ under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act, approval from the Minister for the Environment and Water is needed as well as the Planning Minister, before construction can begin. Community group Save the Bay Coalition is fighting against the development of the Kamay Ferry Wharves through appealing to members to write to Plibersek expressing their opposition to the development.

HubNEWS Kamay Ferry Wharves development approved BY SWAGATALAKSHMI
The controversial development of the Kamay Ferry Wharves has recently been approved to go ahead, despite strong opposition from the community over environmental concerns. State planning minster Anthony Roberts signed off on the project on July 21, just a short time before Randwick Council unanimously passed a motion calling for the environmental impacts of the project to be recognised and reviewed. The proposed size of the wharves are a 180m wharf at La Perouse, and a 200m wharf at Kurnell, which will connect the two suburbs across Yarra Bay through ferry Randwickservices.Councillor Philipa Veitch tabled the most recent motion, affirming that council recognise community concerns, and write to Minster for the Environment and Water Tanya Plibersek to review the decision. The motion highlights several species of aquatic plants and marine life that will be negatively impacted by the new wharves, including endangered seagrasses, corals, seahorses, and fish. Additional concerns about the project include contamination, especially in Botany Bay which has been a site of “major industrial contamination over the past 100 years”. Cr Veitch said the area where development will go ahead is “a beautiful, significant and important “Thewaterway”.construction of this Ferry Wharf is going to completely mobilise and stir up all kind of contaminated sediment,” she said. “It will have huge impacts on the sea grasses and the sub the marine life that depend on those sea grasses.”
DECISION LIES WITH PLIBERSEK
“It is bewildering that they think it is okay to destroy the habitat of threatened marine species and potentially contaminate Frenchman’s beach so that a few operators can make a profit,” said one commenter on a social media post. City Hub reached out to Transport for NSW for a comment.
A ‘Save the Bay’ newsletter speaks about the negative impacts the projects will have on ecological communities and endangered marine species, and urges readers to take action.
“The rehabilitation and improvement of seagrass in Botany Bay through transplantation and creating new areas of growth to provide improved habitat and environment for existing Posidonia australis seagrass meadow. The creation of independent artificial structures such as seahorse hotels of independent artificial structures such as seahorse hotels,” a spokesperson said. “The final Marine Biodiversity Offset Strategy will be developed in consultation with relevant government agencies. This will ensure the project fulfills its obligations under the relevant approvals.” major industrial ontamination

Concerns over the Mayor’s ability to deal with issues of accountability have arisen less than one year after the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal suspended him for three months from the previous Council for three misconduct breaches and two partial breaches of the NSW Local Government Act code of conduct. As a penalty NCAT suspended Byrne’s right to be paid any fee or other remuneration for his duties for three Inmonths.thelight of fresh information about the Leichhardt property, City Hub asked Byrne a number of further questions. A spokesperson told us these could be submitted again when he returns from leave. These are in addition to earlier questions that have also not been answered. Byrne also did not avail himself of an earlier invitation to make any comment of his choosing. Under the Local Government Act (LGA), Councillors must act “lawfully and honestly, and exercise a reasonable degree of care and diligence in carrying out their functions under the LGA or any other Act.” A councillor must not make and lodge a return that the councillor knows or ought reasonably to know is false or misleading in a material particular. City Hub asked IWC General Manager Peter Gainsford whether he has asked Byrne to explain the gaps in the disclosure of interest and whether he has launched an investigation. He responded: “The completion of pecuniary interest forms and conflicts of interest are an obligation of the individual required to complete them. As you can appreciate Council officers are unable to be across the private personal information of individuals required to complete these forms.”
One of the obligations of General Managers is to provide professional support to Councillors. It was noted in last year’s NCAT judgement that Byrne had said that he had struggled with the application of concepts of conflict of interest and that he had requested senior officers for more training without success. Given that this was before Byrne made his latest Disclosure of Interest, City Hub asked Gainsford if he had offered the Mayor any support. This question was not specifically answered.
10 CITY HUB AUGUST 2022 HubNEWS
Byrne does not live in the undeclared Leichhardt property although this was previously his residence. Although he represents the Balmain-Baludarri ward, he now lives on the Ashfield side of the Inner West. He has declared no interest in any title or lease in his current residence. If the person who is renting or owns that property was a partner or other adult relative, he would also be required to declare an interest in that property.
Five Greens Councillors Marghanita Da Cruz, Liz Atkins, Justine Langford, Kobi Shetty and Dylan Griffiths stated last week that they believed that Byrne, like all public figures, should be held accountable. Councillor John Stamolis has expressed his support for an investigation into potential breaches of the Act, both to The Daily Telegraph and City Hub. Independent Councillor Pauline Lockie did not respond to questions. It is not clear yet whether the General Manager has been requested to investigate complaints and whether the matter will be raised at the next IWC meeting which will be held in early August.
So far, seven other Labor Councillors who supported Byrne’s re-election to Mayor despite the previous findings of misconduct have remained silent. Councillors are required to disclose their personal interests
BY WENDY BACON New evidence has emerged that Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne provided inaccurate information about his private interests in his most recent annual ‘disclosure of interests’ Aform.title search shows that Byrne owns a 50% interest in a property in Allen Street, Leichhardt. This was not included in his last disclosure of interest in August 2021. City Hub has sent a copy of the title search to the Inner West Council General Manager Peter Gainsford and the Office of Local Government. All councillors are required to sign annual disclosures of interests. This transparency measure is designed to ensure the public is aware of the private interests of politicians and has a similar purpose to declarations of political Byrnedonations.only declared one property on his 2020/2021 disclosure form. The address is redacted by a label which reads, “residential address has been redacted as this is personal information.”
NO RATES DEBT DECLARED Councillors are also required to disclose debts of more than $500. As has previously been reported, he has not declared rates owed on his Creek Street property to the Inner West Council (IWC) of at least $15,000. He told The Daily Telegraph that he has a ‘normal practice’ arrangement for deceased estates not to pay this until the property, which he has held in his own name for several years, is sold. This raises broader issues than those arising out of Byrne’s inaccurate disclosures including questions about the nature of this policy and how and when Byrne reached his agreement with staff.
City Hub is aware that letters of concern requesting an investigation have been sent to the Minister for Local Government Wendy Tuckerman. The Minister has not replied but it is understood that these letters will be sent to the Office of Local Government because the Minister must conduct herself in a way that is independent of any investigation.
Fresh evidence casts doubt on Mayor’s conduct

LETTERS OF CONCERN SENT
In response to questions, an Office of Local Government spokesperson said, “Councillors are required to disclose their personal interests and assets and that information should be publicly available In accordance with the Model Code of Conduct. The Office of Local Government can review and potentially investigate any alleged breaches of that requirement upon receipt of a complaint. Any complaints should be made to a council’s general manager in the first instance if people have concerns.”
He informed City Hub through a spokesperson that the redacted address is 9 Creek Street, East Balmain. However, Byrne himself has said that he has not lived in this house for decades. This property is currently on the market and will be auctioned on August 11.

HISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE RECOGNISED Randwick Councillor Bill Burst also suggested an approved amendment to place a historical plaque on the pylons, informing people of their past use. The Coogee Pleasure Pier, modelled on English piers such as the Brighton Palace Pier, was built in 1928 but was later removed in 1934 following storm damage. A 1400-seat theatre, an upstairs seated restaurant, and a ballroom were the pier’s main attractions. “The story of the Coogee Pleasure Pier is fantastic. It really speaks of the time and what Coogee was in the 1920s and 1930s,” Cr McCafferty said. “My children were certainly very engaged when I showed them pictures of the pier and what Coogee used to look like.”

Coogee residents expressed disappointment that the reminders of Coogee beach’s history were taken from the sand, but have welcomed the idea to repurpose the artefacts into public art. Randwick Councillor Joanne McCafferty said that the decision to remove the concrete and wooden pylons came “Withswiftly.the weather events, it was a situation that needed to be responded to fairly rapidly,” she said.

The twelve pylons, which were the final remnants of the 1920s Coogee Pleasure Pier, were removed by council-hired contractors in early July after rough surf conditions exposed the pillars.

Coogee residents have expressed disappointment over a lack of preservation of Coogee’s historical sites. Cr McCafferty tabled a motion at a July council meeting which called to consult with local artists and residents about the pylons future use. She said that given “the community felt they hadn’t been given the opportunity to provide their views”, she is “thrilled” that her submitted motion was carried. Long-term Coogee resident Mary Richard told City Hub that the exposed pylons posed no public risk since they “only showed themselves rarely”. “At those times, they were a potent reminder of our colourful past, and the locals generally loved to see them.”

The petition states that the former Minister for Transport, Andrew Constance, agreed to ensure the design of the light rail would enable a future stop to be provided at Wimbo Park. “Thousands have signed our petition to build a second stop, which will be presented to parliament by Alex Greenwich MP,” Cr Moore said.
BY AMBER GRIFFIN Sydney’s Mayor Lord Clover Moore has started a petition to NSW Parliament pushing for the construction of a new light rail stop in Surry Hills, after the project has been in contention for nearly 10 years. The proposed location of the stop is in a small park off Bourke Street, opposite the Bourke Street Bakery.

Transport for NSW and the City of Sydney previously prepared for the stop to be built at the junction of Devonshire Street and Bourke Street, including installing conduits, saying the park was “future proofed” for the light rail. The petition has been established to express recent community interest in the additional Surry Hills light rail stop, as in comparison to eight stops in the Sydney CBD, there is only one stop servicing the entirety of Surry Hills between Central Station and Moore Park. The community is calling for more accessibility, describing the lack of stops an “oversight in the Sydneyplanning”.MayorLord Clover Moore said that it’s an “opportunity to remedy an obvious gap” in public transport for Redfern, Waterloo and East Surry Hills.
STOP IS SUBJECT TO DEMAND Transport for NSW (TfNSW) has made assurances that conduits have been installed in Wimbo park, and the area was designed to enable quick construction of a stop. TfNSW spokesperson said that in the initial planning, a light rail stop at Wimbo Park was not justified due to its proximity to the Surry Hills stop, which is around 400m away. “However, future proofing work at Wimbo Park was completed to enable a stop to be built at a later date, if sufficient demand emerged,” the spokesperson said. TfNSW said they would be monitoring Opal data and customer feedback to inform their decision on the stop.

In every category - Food, Drink, Play, Shop, Servicesthere is an exciting discovery to be made, a potential adventure to be had. Our cover for the 2022 edition features a very famous Sydney icon and an infamous German cabaret icon. Bernie Dieter stands before the Sydney Opera House in strident glory, rendering the word “unique” completely inadequate. She is celebrated internationally as the doyen of cabaret. So why is she on the cover of the Best of Sydney? Bernie Dieter perfectly exemplifies the artistic soul of this city. We seek out the new and different, we’re not squeamish about art that pushes boundaries, and when we like something we want more - Dieter returns for Sydney Fringe after a spectacular teaser season earlier this year. What’s more important is that wherever Dieter sets up tent, she scours the neighbourhood, looking for esoteric, mindblowing, edgy, devilishly humorous local talent to be the cast of her show. And we appreciate Sydney-sidersthat. proudly champion local talent, whether that be in the arts or in small business, sports, education, healthcare or whatever. It’s been a tough few years, so let’s get out there and support the locals. Bernie cabaretDieter, artist

THE BARRIE
PLAY
You might easily walk past the entrance to this covert gem - it looks like a graffitied drive-way where someone has left the large iron swinging gate open. But walk in and it’s another world - dimly lit interior, kind of stylish but unpretentious, lots of tables and chairs, and modern rustic design. The venue has had previous identities and only became The Barrie about three years ago - bad timing! But it weathered the storm and now has a regular nightly crowd, there to listen to live music from local talent, enjoy the tantalising drink and food menu, and make Chippendale cool again. The cocktail list has a great selection of bespoke inventions that definitely need to be tried over multiple visits. 107-109 Regent St, Chippendale. www.thebarrie.com.au

COUNCILLORS CELEBRATE RESOLUTION
22 CITY HUB AUGUST 2022 HubNEWS BY SASHA FOOT
Sydney Greens Councillor Sylvie Ellsmore said the Tramsheds resolution was “very good” compared to last month’s verdict.
“What the City was proposing: to just move activities to Ultimo and Maybanke was not going to work,” Cr Ellsmore said. Cr Ellsmore noted that the Light Rail at the Tramsheds solidified the decision to move some activities to that venue, as it better accommodated “those with mobility concerns”. Liberal Councillor Shauna Jarrett, who tabled the original motion, commended the group’s effort in initiating the “Friendsarrangement.ofPyrmont launched a petition and went out to find an alternative space. After this, they negotiated with the council – it’s a really good outcome,” she said. The Lord Mayor’s spokesperson said that the Friends of Pyrmont initially requested to move their entire operations to the Harold Park Community Hall at the Glebe TheyTramsheds.stated that the request for the exclusive use of the community hall at the Tramsheds came at the expense of “existing hirers who would need to be relocated or excluded from hiring the However, space.”
The City of Sydney has agreed to offer the Pyrmont Community Centre a larger relocation venue at the Glebe Tramsheds, after Clover Moore’s Independent team previously rejected a motion to grant the community $500,000 for an alternative leased space. The centre’s community group, Friends of Pyrmont, will host larger activities like dinner nights and choir rehearsals at the Glebe Tramsheds while $5.7 million renovations to the Pyrmont Community Centre take place over two years. The original proposed relocation spaces of The Ultimo Community Centre, and the Maybanke Community Centre will still go ahead, with the Tramsheds an additional space for accommodating Aactivities.spokesperson for the Lord Mayor Clover Moore clarified that her team rejected the motion, as hiring a temporary facility would cost the council $500,000. But the spokesperson maintained that the Lord Mayor “has always sought to ensure the community’s needs are met while the Pyrmont Community Centre is Crupgraded.”Mooreand her Independent team supported using the Ultimo and Maybanke Community Centres, noting they would “consider additional venue hire if necessary”, but the five other councillors, alongside the Pyrmont group, rejected both spaces due to capacity and access concerns.
member of the Friends of Pyrmont group Mary Mortimer said the group suggested the Tramshed site, as it was being “underused”. “It’s advertised by the council as a venue for hire, but we aim to turn it into a proper community centre,” Mortimer “Oursaid. longer-term goal is to have that venue staffed so that it can be a full community centre for the benefit of those local residents.”

BY TILEAH DOBSON T he Rushcutters Bay skate park saga continues as the issue of a proposed ‘Youth Recreation Area’ at the harbourside location of Rushcutters Bay Park has resurfaced. At a recent Woollahra Council Finance, Community and Services Committee meeting, the idea to move onto the next steps in building the skatepark was put forward to the committee. Despite vocal opposition from residents and community groups, such as the Darling Point Society, the ‘Youth Recreation Area’, which will include a skate plaza and a basketball area, continues to be put on the cards by Woollahracouncil.Councillor Nicola Grieve tabled a motion to re-mobilise plans for the skatepark, and submit an application to move forward with the next steps in the project if heritage approval is granted. Councillor Merrill Witt put forth an amendment on the motion seeking to postpone the project until a Conservation Management Plan (CMP) for all the State Heritage Registrar (SHR) listed parkland has been Alongprepared.with the CMP plan, the amendment raised a request to explore alternative locations for the skatepark both within the SHR parklands and outside of them. Cr Witt’s amendment managed to secure a tied vote, along with the original motion, meaning both will be up for debate at the full council meeting on Monday August 22. City Hub spoke with Cr Witt, who empha sised the importance of the CMP plan. “Taking the extra time to ensure that the proposed Youth Recreation Area does not detrimentally impact the unique heritage values of the park is essential. The project should not be allowed to proceed until a site-wide Conservation Management Plan is prepared,” Cr Witt said.

DARLING POINT SOCIETY STILL FIGHTING City Hub also reached out to Charlotte Feldman, the President of the Darling Point Society, who expressed her disappointment that the skatepark plans have been raised again. “DPS [Darling Point Society] has been fighting against this skatepark for over 6 years gathering over 4,000 signatures against 1600 of which tabled in parliament all to no avail,” she said. “Residents are going to be very disappointed as almost everybody in the area thinks it has been abandoned. In particular residents of Nautique will be virtually on top of it.” Feldman has also written a letter to NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet, expressing that after the tough battle of getting the park heritage status and two years of silence, residents were distraught to discover it was being debated once again. City Hub reached out to Woollahra Mayor Susan Wynne’s office who gave a short “Ascomment.thematter has now been referred to full Council for consideration, we can provide comment once that meeting has taken place,” a spokesperson said. fighting against this skatepark for over 6 years Impression of the proposed plans for the skate park and basketball area at Rushcutters Bay Park.

SYDNEYSIDERS USE E-SCOOTERS REGARDLESS E-scooter owner and active member of the e-scootersnsw.org Facebook group Stefan Caliaro shared with City Hub his perspective on the benefits of e-scooters.
Inner West Council and Waverley Council have joined the City of Sydney as more key inner-city local government area rejecting a state government proposed trial for Thee-scooters.InnerWest Council says they made the decision not to participate due to “similar concerns raised by City of “TheseSydney”.were mainly around safety issues for pedestrians, in particular our narrow, very busy footpaths.”
SYDNEY COUNCILLORS SPEAK UP City of Sydney Councillor Shauna Jarrett, who tabled the idea for Sydney council to opt-in to the trial, said that the council has “lost the opportunity to have a voice in the implementation of e-scooters,” in deciding not to go ahead.

BY AMBER GRIFFIN
“The trial will re-enforce the findings in other cities such as Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, Hobart, Launceston - reduction in the number of short car trips, particularly from transport hubs to people’s workplaces, shopping trips, visiting friends –Melbourne reduced its number of small car trips by 500,000.”
Cr Jarrett has started a petition calling on the Lord Mayor Clover Moore and the City of Sydney to “write to the NSW Government endorsing and participating in the NSW Shared E-Scooter Trial”.
No e-scooters for Sydney’s inner city
City of Sydney Greens Councillor Sylvie Ellsmore said to City Hub that the Greens support the legalisation of e-scooters, however the trial would not legalise riding. “Fines for illegally riding an e-scooter can be thousands of dollars,” Cr Ellsmore “Despitesaid. this E-scooters are currently sold at popular retailers with insufficient warning that they are illegal to ride in public. The government’s trial would not have legalised the use of private scooters and addressed this problem.”
HubNEWS
“Those Councillors who opposed the trial are following a narrative that suits their ideology: if the plan is not ours, we won’t support it.” The NSW Government has not provided any funding to assist Councils in development and management of trials. “[NSW government] have enabled the trial to be undertaken from a regulation point of view, – the Council has the expertise in risk management, public communications, community consultation and program implementation – all parties could cooperate to enable the trial.”
25CITY HUB AUGUST 2022
Caliaro said that e-scooters are a green, safe and ultra-affordable mode of local Caliarotransport.said he believes people can have increased mental and physical health due to e-scooters, giving them the opportunity to go out more frequently, and reach new businesses they otherwise would have had to drive or catch public transport to access. “With an e-scooter it empowers individuals to think bigger with their days and that’s empowerment which leads to more positive action in peoples’ lives,” Caliaro Assaid.the popularity of E-scooters rises and the demand for alternative modes of transport increases, Sydneysiders urge for e-scooters to be legalised – many admitting they ride e-scooters in the city regardless of privately owned e-scooters being illegal in NSW. North Sydney Council, which lies just over the harbour bridge from the City of Sydney LGA, announced interest in the trial in March this year. A spokesperson from North Sydney council said to City Hub that “Council is aware of the City of Sydney’s position” on the trial. “We still intend to participate in the trial and are awaiting further advise and information from TfNSW,” the spokesperson said.
When asked if council worried nonparticipation might have impact on other local government areas, the Inner West Council said “as [The City of Sydney] is not participating in the trial, Council does not expect that there would be difficulties for large numbers of Incommuters.”NSW,participating councils will be trialling e-scooter rentals, although the government has yet to announce which local government areas will be involved in the trial, however 37 councils across NSW have expressed interest. For councils participating in the trial, the government has provided conditions for Privately-ownedoperation. e-scooters will not be part of the e-scooter triad, and instead share-scheme scooters will be solely available for use. To acknowledge safety concerns, the hired e-scooters across NSW will have a restricted speed of 20 kilometres an hour, helmets will be compulsory, riders will have to be a minimum 16 years of age, and night-time riding will be prohibited.
Cr Jarrett said that Sydney council “has shown in their stance that ‘the City of Sydney is a nation-wide leader in addressing climate change options’ is just all talk and no real action.”

HYPERBOLIC OR JUST PLAIN HYPE!
When two contestants decided to leave Channel Nine’s long running reality show ‘The Block’ after only two days on the set, the station promos screamed “Australia - The TV Shock of The Year Is Here!”. It was typical of the network’s outlandish claims in pushing a range of programs from the moronic ‘Beauty & The Geek’ to their flagship ’60 Minutes’. You sense a certain tongue in cheek licence on the part of the promo producers but the overall impression is one of hyperbole out of control. Nine is by no means the only offender here, all the commercial stations are guilty of promoting their tacky reality shows and tabloid style current affairs with a similar vocabulary of shameless hyperbole. We are constantly told: “it’s the show that all Australia is talking about”, when in truth there could be less than a million viewers watching as the audience for free-to-view television continues to dwindle. In the 1800s, American showman and businessman P.T. Barnum made a considerable fortune out of promoting a series of hoaxes and human curiosities, leading to the formation of his circus empire, not surprisingly labelled ‘The Greatest Show On Earth’. Amongst his most notorious sideshow ‘exhibits’ was an Afro-American woman Joice Heth, whom he claimed was 161 years old and was once the slave mammy of George WhenWashington.Joicedied, at an estimated age of 79, he even organized a public autopsy for 1500 spectators in New York, charging each of them 50 cents. When the surgeon declared she was at least half the advertised age, Barnum claimed that a body had been substituted and the real Joice Heth was on tour in Europe. Such is the nature of hype that it often hides deception and dishonesty, all in the name of making a quick buck. With the growth of movies and television in the ‘50s and ‘60s, the entertainment industry became home to a flagrant use of hyperbole. Exploitation and B grade movie posters and advertisements regularly made the most sensational claims, luring patrons to theatres with words such as: ‘shocking’, ‘amazing’ and The‘incredible’.problem for modern day hyperbole - or just plain hype - is that it is now so widespread and vacuous that the words employed no longer carry any real weight. With endless click bait on mass media, Tik Tok ad nauseam and the access to all manner of disturbing material on the internet, it’s hard to be really shocked these days – let alone when two contestants turn their back on a dreary reality Perhapsshow.weare now at the point where a new ‘hyper-hyperbole’ will need to be employed before anybody really takes notice. If somebody does break contract and scarper from a shitty reality show, the TV promo will scream ‘Australia – get ready for the most heinous, dastardly, stupefying and abominable act of the century!’. Just the kind of trigger you need to switch off the TV and read a good book!

T he Sydney Fringe Festival is back and set to dazzle Sydneysiders and visitors with a massive program of alternative visual and performing arts. This year’s festival is the longest running ever with a packed schedule from 16th August to 30th September. It is also the largest Fringe ever: an astounding 500+ events across 50 venues and nine festival hubs. Speaking with City Hub, Festival Director and CEO, Kerri Glasscock voiced her excitement about the Fringe’s return. “It’s a wonderful, thrilling and slightly terrifying feeling to have the festival return after a two-year hiatus,” she said. “There is definitely a palpable sense of excitement from artists and audiences, which is fantastic, but as event producers we are definitely managing feelings of anxiety and trauma from the past couple of years.” “But now that the program is launched and we get closer to opening, excitement is definitely building within the team. It’s just terrific to get past the planning phase and into production mode.” The festival offers an opportunity for new and emerging artists to showcase their work; over 80% of the program is made up of world premiers. Many new and important creative projects have spent the last two years in development, and Glasscock was thrilled to finally be able to announce them. “First up is Limitless, which is our brand-new hub of accessible events celebrating the work of deaf and disabled artists. It has been curated by our Access Coordinator Madeleine Stewart and The Sydney Fringe Access and Inclusion Panel,” she said. “Another new initiative this year is our Youth Hub in Newtown. This is a week of work that is suitable for under 18’s audiences. It’s being hosted at Newtown High School of the Performing Arts and has dance, theatre, improv, comedy and Whenmore.”pressed for her top ten picks from the 500 strong program, Glasscock had a hard time coming up with a shortlist - she is looking forward to all of them. However, she did highlight ten that promise to be amazing: 1. Six Women Standing In Front of a White Wall: In 2019 Little Dove brought one of the most extraordinary shows I have ever seen to Fringe called Evangeline. This year they are presenting an incredible work called Six Women Standing in Front of a White Wall 2. Tit anic the Movie, The Play: I loved Act/React’s show, Speed The Movie, The Play in 2019 so I’m already sold on this one.
4. Gar y Starr Performs Everything: Whenever I am at other fringe festivals and Gary is performing, I always go. This is his first visit to Sydney Fringe. Gary is a mind-blowing performer, with impeccable timing, physicality and charisma.
9. Evocacion: Awarded best dance work at Adelaide Fringe in 2022, this show will transport you to the stages of Sevilla. It features two of Australia’s best Flamenco dancers- Chachy Penalver and Roshanne Wijeyeratne.

(See p. 30) REVIEW REVIEW BY MARK MORELLINI T he highly anticipated Jekyll & Hyde The Musical which has gained acclaim from critics worldwide finally arrives in Sydney. Aptly described as a dark gothic musical and loosely based on the 1886 novella The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, this production should prove a hit amongst theatregoers. Set in St Jude’s Military Asylum London, in 1947, the story focuses on Doctor Henry Jekyll, who believes he can separate evil from good within men, so he self-administers a formula he has concocted, unwittingly releasing an aggressive alter-ego named Hyde.
Y ve Blake’s fresh and original show was an unexpected sensation when it debuted at Belvoir. It now returns on a bigger stage with whiz-bang production, an updated cast and an enthusiastic new audience of converts. Edna (Manali Datar), Jules (Milo Hartill) and Brianna (Tonieka Del Rosario) are 14-year-old besties whose worlds currently revolve around boy band sensation, True Connection, and especially lead singer, Harry (Blake Appelqvist). They share their Harrycentric hopes and dreams on an online chat group. Edna has a special online friend, SaltyPringl (Jesse Dutlow) with whom she exchanges Harry-themed fan fiction, but the lines between fiction and reality soon become diabolically Edna’sblurred.mother, Caroline (Danielle Barnes) is single, works long hours, and is ideologically disconnected from Edna, though she tries her best to find some common ground. Mel O’Brien plays roaming character, Lily, who occasionally flits in and out of scenes brandishing a rhythmic gymnastics ribbon. Her voice is as big and brash as her personality. Rounding out the ensemble are the swings and odd twins, Tom Kantor and Hannah What’sMcInerney.notable and truly refreshing is the diversity of people on stage. It’s a cast that defies the homogeny of type that usually dominates this kind of theatre, and it is a cast that is much more representative of the real world. JEKYLL AND HYDE THE MUSICAL BY JOHN MOYLE W hen planes were diverted away from the US after the 9/11 attacks, many were sent to the large airport in the small Canadian town of Gander, Newfoundland. The story of how the townsfolk handled the sudden influx of people from around the world is the basis of the musical, Come From Writers,Away. Irene Sankoff and David Hein interviewed the residents and many of the plane passengers, often merging their stories or telling it straight from the transcripts. One story that emerged is that of NYC resident Hannah, who while stranded in Gander, learns that her firefighter son has lost his life in the battle for the towers. We also learn of relationships being formed and others that, like the towers, will crumble, all mixed in with strange local rituals of welcome, namely the Screech In, where initiates kiss a cod and down a glass of the local rum aptly named ‘screech’. Even the play’s title Come From Away ,has its origins in the local Gander idiom. “CFA is not a derogatory term but it means that we have to welcome you as a friend,” explains Police Chief, Oz Fudge. Since Come From Away’s first performances, except for Covid interruptions, it has sold out and broken records across North America, Ireland, Canada, Netherlands and Australia. As for the locals, they cannot quite work out what the fuss is about. “We have a saying here, ‘let’s get her done’ and that’s what we did, ‘we got her done’,” Fudge said. “It is the authentic story of what happened and that is the universal story of love.”
COME FROM AWAY FLIES BACK INTO SYDNEY FANGIRLS
The success of this musical lies predominantly in casting an actor who could not only sing but would be able to credibly portray two diverse characters, traversing back and forth. The chosen actor to play the role was Brendan Maclean, an Australian singer-songwriteractor who delivers a powerhouse performance in his first musical theatre production. A star is born in the world of musical theatre! Brady Peeti, a proud transgender Wahine Maori is a standout in the role of Lucy Harris, Jekyll’s mistress. Her vocals are sublime, and she also provides the comedic moments which spawns most of the laughter. Audiences may never see a Lucy like this Lucy ever again. Georgina Hopson also shines in a pivotal role as Emma Carew, Jekyll’s bride to be. A special mention must also be given to the lighting designer for cleverly utilizing red lighting to indicate the barbaric murders Hyde commits which simultaneously downplays the visual violence of the scenes. BY RITA BRATOVICH T he news that Dame Olivia NewtonJohn died has evoked genuine sadness from fans and admirers around the world. British-born but lovingly adopted by Australia, ONJ had a career that spanned five decades, transected genres, and garnered many prestigious awards. Her battle with breast cancer, which began 30 years ago, led her to establish the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre in 2012. Newton-John was born on 26 September 1948, in Cambridge, England. Her family moved to Melbourne, Australia when Newton-John was six years old. Her talent sprouted early and by the time she was 14 she was already appearing on local Australian television. Her destiny was sealed when she appeared on The Go! Show and met Pat Carroll, with whom she would later form a duet, and John Farrer, who would write songs for the duet and then continue to write for Newton-John when she went solo. Newton-John’s steady rise to success began in earnest when she moved to the UK after winning the trip as a prize in a talent contest. In 1970, she released her first solo album and from it, the first single, “If Not For You”, written by Bob Dylan, broke her into the US charts. Her followup single, “Banks of the Ohio”, reached the Top 10 in UK and Australia, but it wasn’t until 1973 that she was able to make inroads in the US again. “Let Me Be There” entered the top echelon of several US charts and earned NewtonJohn a Grammy Award for Best Country InFemale.1974, Newton-John sang the UK entry in the Eurovision Song Contest, “Long Live Love”. It was the same year that ABBA sang “Waterloo”. We know how that went. Her next hit single was “If You Love Me, Let Me Know” which faired well on the charts. Then she was presented with a song written by Peter Allen and Jeff Barry; a heartfelt ballad called “I Honestly Love You”. It became her first number one single, earned her the Grammys for Record of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance – Female. Soon after, Newton-John moved to the US. Though her 1977 single, “Sam” performed reasonably well, the album and singles that immediately followed saw a gentle backwards slide. In 1978, Newton-John starred opposite John Travolta in the smash hit film, Grease. It made her an international star. The soundtrack produced three more hit songs for Newton-John, two of which were especially written for the movie by longtime collaborator, John Farrar: “You’re The One That I Want” and “Hopelessly Devoted To You”. Grease catapulted Newton-John to international stardom. Her next film, also a musical, was Xanadu in 1980, in which she danced (and rollerskated) with screen legend, Gene Kelly. The theme song, “Magic” and “Suddenly” were hit songs from the film soundtrack. Arguably the second most pivotal career iteration for Newton-John was the release of the 1981 album, Physical, and with it, a new, steamy image. The song “Physical” caused outrage in some quarters due to its suggestive overtones, but that didn’t stop it becoming a phenomenal hit. Though Newton-John never quite repeated the success of Grease or Physical, she had established herself as a mega-star. In 1986, she gave birth to daughter, Chloe and entered a new phase in her life. Then in 1992, on the brink of a come-back tour, Newton-John was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her experience through treatment into remission galvanised her resolve to be an advocate for the greater good. She promoted health and wellness and got behind many animal welfare and environmental causes. It wasn’t just lipservice; she was present and active and achieved much. Her proudest legacy, in her own estimation, is the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre she helped establish in 2012. It bears her name and it holds her spirit. Newton-John frequently visited the centre, spending time with staff and Newton-Johnpatients. started the Walk for Wellness 5km walk or run fundraiser to support cancer research. ONJ will be remembered for the beautiful soul, angelic voice, and warm, generous heart she had and readily shared. Love and light, Olivia. www.onjcancercentre.org LOVEDHONESTLYYOU

F ilm Kids is an inspirational featurelength Australian documentary produced and directed by award-winning film maker, Bernard Weber, and imagined into reality by the special needs students of St Edmunds College, Wahroonga. The film is centred around several teenage students with various intellectual disabilities who are each given the chance to make a short film about a subject of their choosing. It follows each budding film-maker as they develop then screen their projects: Joe writes a humorous lament on the pain of sitting on hard seats and finds a surprising solution. Caitlin shares her dreams for her birthday party which includes elephants, kangaroos and possums. Little chefs provide a 3-course dining experience for their teachers and parents. Ivan, a boy with profound hearing loss, dreams of building a skateboard and riding it in the skate park. But can he skate? Michaella, a tiny bundle of energy, showcases her passion for being a personal trainer. As we follow the progress of the short films, we also get insights into the broader aspects of childhood intellectual disability: the particular challenges and rewards of the learning environment; the alternating heartbreak and joy of parents and families as they navigate the unique territory of raising a child with a disability.
The documentary includes poignant interviews with parents who share the complex emotions around first learning their child has a disability, then dealing with discriminatory systems and individuals, the pain of watching their child struggle, the pride of watching their child Filmtriumph.Kids has been lauded by healthcare “Thispractitioners.amazing documentary is essential viewing for nursing, midwifery and child and family health clinicians because it provides insight into the lives of children living with disability and reveals the transformative impact on health outcomes of supportive parenting and early intervention.”
Kylie Minogue (Charlene) and Jason Donovan (Scott) were the first actors to reach apotheosis but a long list of names followed, including: Russell Crowe, Guy Pierce, Natalie Imbruglia, Natalie Bassingthwaighte, Chris and Liam Hemsworth, Margot Robbie, Delta Goodrem, Rob Mills, Alan Dale, Holly Valance, and (cough) Craig McLachlan. Throw industrial-level popstar machines, Stock Aitken Waterman into the mix and you had Neighbours graduates all over the airwaves during the 1980s. On the subject of music, the Neighbours theme song was once voted the world’s most recognised TV theme. With music composed by erstwhile celebrity, Tony Hatch and lyrics by his wife, Jackie Trent, the song has been through eight Theiterations.firstand perhaps most famous version is the one sung by Barry Crocker. Others who have performed it over the opening and closing credits include: Sandra de Jong, Daniel Boys and Stephanie Angelini, Garth Ploog, and Bonnie Anderson. Love it or hate it, Neighbours has figuratively placed its hands into the wet cement of Australia’s cultural walk of fame. It is embedded in the landscape. They have, indeed, become good friends.
HEART-WARMING DOCUMENTARY NEIGHBOURS: LEAVING AFTER 37 YEARS

Neighbours was the brainchild of Australian writer and producer, Reginald J. Watson, arguably the king of Aussie soaps with a resume that includes Prisoner, The Young Doctors, Sons and Daughters, The Restless Years, among many others. Prior to this, he had a very successful career in the UK writing and producing some of its most popular Flushsoapies.with his previous wins, Watson took his new concept to television powerhouse, Reg Grundy Productions in 1985 and it was readily accepted. Based on the trials and tribulations of residents in the fictional cul-de-sac, Ramsay Street, in the fictional Melbourne suburb of Erinsborough, Neighbours debuted on the Seven Network on 18 March, 1985. It faired reasonably well in Melbourne, but Sydney ratings were unimpressive and it was cancelled in July the same Channelyear. Ten jumped on it, screening it on their network for the first time on 20 January, 1986, starting a jewel-lined dream run and probably causing some executives at Seven to gnaw off their own hands. But Neighbours did not truly shine until it appeared on British TV BBCscreens.executive, Michael Grade bought the show and included it in BBC1’s daytime scheduling where it garnered a passable viewership. Then, one day, his daughter advised him that she and her friends had been reprimanded at school for sneaking out to watch a daytime soapie - Neighbours. Apparently, all the kids loved it. Grade was no fool. He repeated the 1:30pm episodes at 5:30pm each day. That was Neighbours’ watershed moment; its ratings curve went vertical overnight and the soapie’s then stars became idols.
- Trish Lowe, RN, RM, MACN. “...engaging, inspirational, educational and emotive. It should be essential viewing for all those caring for children and young persons with intellectual disability.”
BY RITA BRATOVICH It would not be hyperbole to call Neighbours a phenomena. The halfhour episodes of this quintessentially Australian soap opera have fed the appetites of hungry young viewers (and more than a few adults) daily for almost four decades. It has also been the incubator for literally dozens of acting and singing careers, some of which went on to super stardom. Tonight (July 28) the credits will roll at the end of Episode 8903 and the famous theme song will herald the end of an era.
