SAMA Bedford sets birthday celebration The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art in Bedford is celebrating its first birthday May 2-5. A variety of activities are planned to mark the occasion Admission will be free from May 3 to May 5, so plan to stop in and see the current exhibits in six galleries. The celebration will kick off with a â&#x20AC;&#x153;first tapâ&#x20AC;? of the special edition SAMA Birthday Bash Smash Ale at Olde Bedford Brewing Company from 6 to 8 p.m. May 2. At 12:30 p.m. May 3 SAMA Bedford will host a Cake Smash in a traditional birthday celebration in partnership with the Bedford County Chamber of Commerce. The fun doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stop there. The museum will host a Collage Party from 5 to 8 p.m. May 3. Bring creativity and join in the creation of a unique collage piece that pays tribute to the museumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s home, the Anderson House. One of the highlights in the exhibit is the Andy Warhol work â&#x20AC;&#x153;Grace Kellyâ&#x20AC;? from 1984. Somerset-based photographer Sallie Zoerbâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s piece called â&#x20AC;&#x153;Through a Looking Glassâ&#x20AC;? from 1998, hangs among other pieces featuring female forms. A select group of prints by American painter Will Barnet are displayed in the Paula & Dean Lemley Gallery, which stretches up the historic grand staircase from the first to second floor of the museum. Barnetâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s artistic output spanned over eighty years and these pieces demonstrate his evolution through artistic phases from the 1970s onwards. There are several different types of printmaking on display including serigraphs, lithographs, woodcuts, and etching. The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Bedford is located in the historic Anderson House at 137 E. Pitt St. The Museum is open daily 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Fridays 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Museum is closed Tuesdays. Cost of admission is $10 per person or free admission for ages 21 & under and 65 & older and SAMA members. Denver trio The Yawpers are intense and dynamic on “Human Question,” a rambunctious album tracing some of the many paths that rock ‘n’ roll takes through its deep foundations in the blues. The band’s fourth album encompasses from approximations to white noise and Zeppelin-esque grooves to folky sentiments and indie jangle in R.E.M./Replacements mode. It’s being presented as lead singer Nate Cook’s “therapy” record, a more intimate approach than their previous release. Where “Boy in a Well,” from 2017, explored the story of a semi-abandoned newborn in World War I-era France, “Human Questions” often sounds like the rush and chaos of present times. With exceptions, Cook’s traumas seem to be projected on the world, not kept within. “Carry Me,” an epic track that goes from whispers to screams, a squawking sax solo and a quiet end, is one of the most personal and straightforward, if close to unhinged — “Lie to me, it’s all I need/Tell me you love me ... And you’ll carry me through.” The acoustic center of “Man as Ghost” camouflages an appealing combination of tortured and relaxed, with one of the album’s most haunting, schizophrenic lines — “I’m neighbor with another man/who moves where ever I decide to live.” The title track is another enigmatic highlight echoing the early ’70s, while “Dancing on My Knees,” possibly about coming to terms with divorce, is bluesy and visceral though only half as much as “Forgiveness Through Pain.” Respite comes with the final two tracks, “Can’t Wait,” whose title evoking a Replacements’ classic is not the only similarity, and “Where the Winters End,” which could be a rewrite of Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young” in elegy mode. — By Pablo Gorondi, The Associated Press

Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O teams up with producer-tothe-stars Danger Mouse (Brian Burton) on a balanced collaboration that brings out the best from both, enriched by variations like O’s diverse vocals and Burton’s orchestral talents. The nine-minute title track, which translates to “first light,” opens the album with a four-part composition presenting Danger Mouse’s cinematic soundscapes — whose gloss here makes them ideal for a plastic surgeon’s waiting room — enveloping O’s much warmer, though no less disquieting sections: “I’m nowhere/I’m no one/I’m nobody/There’s nobody but you.” Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner appears on a couple of tracks, including the reverberating, fuzzy “Woman,” whose ’60s-influenced style

also shows up in alternative forms on “Leopard’s Tongue” and “Redeemer.” O’s voice has a much more delicate, Vashti Bunyan-like character on “Ministry,” where an icy Wurlitzer gives the song an outer space feel, while the determined “Turn the Light” has splashes of acoustic guitars, a funkily delicate bass and would have been an ideal guest spot for Damon Albarn, whose Gorillaz have also benefited from the Burton touch. With musicians from all over the United States, as well as Argentina, Canada and Japan, to name a few, and instruments from as far away as Egypt and Morocco, Snarky Puppy’s “Immigrance” rings true to its name. Bandleader and bassist Michael League says it’s all about fluidity, motion and being “in a constant state of migration.” At 19 members — including trios of drummers, guitarists and percussionists — Snarky Puppy is a band as caravan, a group that may need to start its day with a roll call. Winner of three Grammys and numerous other distinctions, the instrumental mega-combo is also a globalist when it comes to musical styles, finding room to add a wide spectrum of world sounds to its jazz and funk foundations. Opener “Chonks” is chock-full of funk, while another League composition, “Bigly Strictness,” has a gnarly guitar and a Moog keyboard solo that briefly speeds up like a vintage video game. None of the tunes have lyrics, but guitarist Chris McQueen’s “Coven” has plenty of lyricism, anchored by a horn section that frequently varies its hues as guitars and keyboards add their own emotional inputs. “Bling Bling,” by saxophonist Chris Bullock, and League’s “Xavi” are rhythmic tours de force, both highlighting one of the album’s idiosyncrasies: the three drummers — Larnell Lewis, Jamison Ross and Jason “JT” Thomas — all play on sections of the compositions but without overlapping. Keyboardist Justin Stanton’s “Bad Kids to the Back,” a tune as mischievous as its name, also makes great use of the rotating rhythmists. “Even Us” ends the album in cinematic fashion, as beautiful melodies from oud, violin and flugelhorn combine with Turkish percussion, piano and more for a soundtrack to much of the world’s existence. ltoona Community Theatre brings the well-loved musical “Mamma Mia,” featuring the megahits of Swedish singing sensation Abba, to the Mishler Theatre May 2-5. Directed by Maria Perehinec of Altoona, “Mamma Mia” promises to be a rollicking, happy lark featuring an expansive cast comprised of lead actors, supporting actors, an ensemble, pit singers and choreographers. Of the 13 lead roles, 10 actors will perform on the Benzel State for their first time. “Mamma Mia” marks Perehinec’s first time as a solo director, debuts 10 newcomers and returns several acting veterans. A popular movie, on-Broadway show and touring performance, “Mamma Mia” is reported to have been viewed by more than 60,000

people and is described as the “ultimate feel-good” production, Perehinec said, calling it “my dream show.” Musical direction is provided by Bryce Cossitor and choreography is by Marissa Carney, Carol Fedeli, Tony Demi, and Mark Perehinec. Such support is crucial with such a big production, especially as the late Steve Helsel was to assist Perehinec in her directorial debut. She is dedicating the show to her long-time friend and mentor. The ABBA songs, with lush vocals and harmonies, require a “pit” of singers to sing every number in support of those singing on stage. “You will see two people on stage, but hear 20 voices,” she explained, expressing gratitude for Cossitor’s expertise. The show has a “concert feel to it,” said Julie Hanlon of Hollidaysburg who plays Donna. The audience’s engagement by singing along to the familiar hit songs adds to that feeling.

La Llorona, a woman who according to Mexican legend murdered her own children and now wanders the earth looking for them, snatching other unsuspecting tots and drowning them, gets her close-up in a major Hollywood film, Warner Bros.’ “The Curse of La Llorona .” It’s a pretty terrifying bedtime story popular in the Latino community, used to scare children into behaving with the threat that La Llorona will come and take them if they don’t. Seems like decent enough fodder for a jumpy 93 minutes at the movies.

But the so-called “weeping woman” may have another reason to wail once her big North American debut hits theaters. The movie, from director Michael Chaves and producer James Wan, who made “The Conjuring” so good and stylish that it inspired a whole “universe” of films, including this one, just isn’t that great. In fact, it makes La Llorona pretty ordinary — a demonic bride who terrorizes two single-moms and their families in Los Angeles in the late 1970s by running at them screaming and crying oily black tears. Subtlety isn’t really her thing. The screenplay, credited to Mikki Daughtry and Tobais Iaconis, is mainly about Anna Tate-Garcia (Linda Cardellini), a widowed child services worker and mom to two, Chris (Roman Christou) and Samantha (Jaynee-Lynne Kinchen). One of her cases, Patricia

Alvarez (Patricia Velasquez), a mother of two, is being haunted by La Llorona and when Anna intervenes, suspecting that it was mom who burned marks into her sons’ arms, both boys end up dead, drowned in the shallow LA River. So La Llorona turns her attentions to Anna’s kids, and things start to get quite stressful and scary in their big craftsman home, in part because although Anna, Chris and Samantha eventually encounter this very formal demon, none talk to each other about it. Even more frustrating: When Anna sees burn marks on her daughter’s arm, after very recently having seen the same marks on the two now dead Alavarez boys, she doesn’t pry further when Samantha says she merely fell. She just tells her daughter that the world can be scary and to hug her doll when it is. Anna, you start to suspect, might not be the best at her job. The film feels both long and rushed which is something of an accomplishment as Chaves speeds through scenes and on to the next dutifully: Here’s where they finally get help, here’s where you get a tie-in to the other “Conjuring” films, etc. Plotlines are abandoned at will, there are set ups for things that never come back and some suspiciously malleable “monster-logic” that makes the whole endeavor seem a little lazy and half-baked. At one point, he seems to even give up on how to create tension, opting to turn one scare into what feels more like a trailer with quick, disconnected flashes of images and black. Which is a shame because it’s not like the film has nothing to offer. A bucket of popcorn stands no chance against the many, many jump scares that are to come. “La Llorona” is at its best when Chaves is permitted to give scenes time to breathe. There’s a great sequence early on with kids in a car that is sure to inspire more than a few nightmares about manual car windows. The legend of La Llorona could inspire a whole universe of films on its own, but not with a kick-off like this.

Chicago evidently is Noah Wyle’s kind of town. The actor did location filming there during his “ER” run, and he returned to the Windy City as a principal member of the ensemble cast of “The Red Line,” a limited-run CBS drama series that plays out in twohour installments over four consecutive Sundays starting April 28. Prolific TV-show maker Greg Berlanti (“The Flash,” “God Friended Me”) and filmmaker Ava DuVernay (“Selma”) are among the project’s executive producers. So are Caitlin Parrish and Erica Weiss, who adapted a play they wrote into “The Red Line.” It unites various characters through a

tragedy: the wrongful killing of a black doctor (Corey Reynolds, “The Closer”) by a white police officer (Noel Fisher, “Shameless”). Wyle portrays Daniel, a highschool teacher particularly impacted by the death, as is his teenage daughter (Aliyah Royale) ... who frequently rides the Chicago train known as The Red Line with him. sistently happened with every single script. I can’t even talk about this show without getting upset. It was much more about staying out of my own way and going in and doing my homework, but being really open to being in Chicago and working with the Chicago crew — and working with a diverse crew and a young crew, and a crew that didn’t really have a frame of reference from when I was in that city before.” After producing his main acting projects (“The Librarians,” “Falling Skies”) in recent years, Wyle put himself in others’ creative hands again for “The Red Line.” Weiss explains that she and Parrish “are from the Chicago theater scene, and that commu-

nity is a part of who we are in everything we do. When we created this show, it was never going to be set or filmed anywhere else. “The city has a burgeoning industry in film and TV where more and more things are being filmed there,” adds Weiss. “Amazing crew, incredible local talent ... so for us, it was a no brainer. And I think Chicago has a lot to prove in the national conversation. We want to show the country that we are more than a talking point, more than the narrative that is often used to describe the city. There are so many layers and so many different kinds of people, it really is the perfect microcosm to tell an American story.”
