Welcome to Philly By Chris Balbi You’ve made it to Philadelphia! You’re either skipping out of that really boring conference breakout session, escaping family or are here on a lay over. In any case you are fortunate enough to have a few hours to kill, let’s get to it and hit up some MUST-SEES!

DOUBLEKNOT

Photo by J. Fusco for VISIT PHILADLEPHIA®

4 Hours to Kill ... There’s a high chance you’re at the Pennsylvania Convention Center (13th and Arch St.) which is great because you’re within 6 blocks of EVERYTHING I want to show you! Start by heading west and follow Benjamin Franklin Parkway to The Art Museum of Philadelphia. On your journey to your “Rocky Statue” Selfie, you’ll pass through Logan Circle, which houses a fountain you can see in the intro of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” You’ll also pass by the Rodin Museum, the Barnes Museum AND the Franklin Institute. When you finally reach the art museum, run the stairs, enjoy the views, and if you’re feeling adventurous, head to the back of the museum and take a peek at Boathouse Row. Local boating clubs take great pride in their 19th-century boat houses, which line the Schuylkill River, and if you think it’s cool during the day, you should see them at night. The museum is huge, I swear it’s bigger on the inside! Head back east and you’ll pass through City Hall, the heart of the city, on your way to Independence Mall, the birthplace of 6

navigaytour.com

America! You’ll pass one of my favorite lunch time spots, AQIMERO. Located within the lobby of the iconic Ritz-Carlton Philadelphia, Aqimero meshes the Latin-American flavors of acclaimed chef Richard Sandoval in a modern, sustainable way. After lunch, check out the sites of Independence Mall. Tickets to both the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall are free and can be picked up at the Visitor Center or online. On weekends, lines form early and tickets are harder to grab than Hamilton Tickets! After you get your fill of American History, it’s time to fill your stomach, head to America’s Oldest Market, the Reading Terminal Market (51 N 12th St.). While the number of breakfast and lunch spots may be higher than the number of boys I slept with last year, you shouldn’t miss getting a Grilled Cheese sandwich from Valley Shepherd Creamery & Meltkraft Grilled Cheese (West side of the market). With a full stomach, head back to your meeting, your secret is safe with me.

Full Day to Explore Oh? You’re playing hooky all day or were smart enough to book an extra FULL day to explore Philly? You’re gonna want to pick up a public transportation pass to make things easier. I recommend Philly’s PHLASH bus system, with 22 stops you can hop on an off on, you can’t go wrong. pick it up at Reading Terminal (12th and Market) or at the Independence Visitor Center (4th and Market). Let’s keep going! Head east to Old City. Then check out The Franklin Fountain (116 Market St.) and get a big-ass ice cream sundae served to you by cute guys. Not ready for frozen dairy? Check out Elfreth’s Alley, America’s oldest continuously inhabited street. Take an hour and explore Old City, the neighborhood known as America’s most historic square mile. You’ll find boutique shops and Penn’s Landing, check out

VisitPhilly.com, Uwishunu.com or PhillyGayCalendar.com for up to date events! When you’re ready to leave the “land of the straights” and go to the gayborhood, head back west to 13th/Locust and take a quick selfie on the rainbow street corner. You’re now less than 2 blocks away from 10 gay bars! For pre-dinner drinks I recommend Philadelphia’s newest gay bar, Writer’s Block Rehab (1342 Cypress St.). A blend of unique cocktails served in an even more unique setting. When your drunk munchies hit, consider Double Knot, Sampan, Zavino and or Charlie Was a Sinner (All on the 1300 block of Sansom). If the weather is nice, leave 13th street and head to Rittenhouse Square, one of five original squares planned by city founder William Penn in the late 17th-century.

LIBERTY BELL

Photo by J. Fusco for VISIT PHILADLEPHIA®

Two Days in the City STOP THE PRESSES, PULL OUT, FULL STOP, you’ve got a second day to explore this city over 1.5 million people call home? Fear no boredom, we’ve got more city (and hotties pushing strollers) to see! Enjoy a good morning breakfast? Check out Mixto (1141 Pine St.) or Sabrina’s (910 Christian St.) for brunch! After you’re more full than (insert gay analogy) walk west and enjoy a mile or two of the 130 miles of the Schuylkill river trail. Remember those hotties pushing strollers I mentioned earlier? Here’s their hang out. Hit up Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter & Paul (1723 Race St.) If people-watching is your forte, head south to Rittenhouse Square LIBERTY BELL by J.Fucso

where you can grab a cocktail at Parc (227 S 18th St.) and sit at a sidewalk table watching the people stroll by. There’s also a great outdoor market that pops up on Saturdays from May-September! Now “choose your own adventure” and pick a famous house to tour. With choices like Ben Franklin, Betsy Ross, and Edgar Allen Poe, there’s a dash of history that will excite even the most basic of people. Next, I recommend walking the Ben Franklin Bridge. You’ll pass through Franklin Square (200 6th St.) and be rewarded with a not-sooften seen view of the city all while crossing the Delaware River. Yup, the same one from your history books! navigaytour.com 7

FRANKY BRADLEYS

8

navigaytour.com

Photo by J. Fusco for VISIT PHILADLEPHIA®

PHILLY BARS One of the best parts about Philadelphia is how condensed the gay bars are. You can literally walk between any two of them in under 10 minutes, and if you’re feeling really adventurous you could do a “fruit loop!” What’s a fruit loop you ask? Well aside from a deliciously understated breakfast cereal, it’s the act of taking a shot (or enjoying a cocktail) at 7 different gay bars…I am not responsible for your liver or hangover. Start with Philadelphia’s classic and most populated gay bar, Woody’s (202 S 13th St.) and then head half a block west to what I like to call “Poseidon’s Lair” due to its dark, sexy and deep decor aka Franky Bradley’s (1320 Chancellor St.). After that continue south to the newest gay bar in town, the Writer’s Block (1342 Cypress St.), for a fancy-schmancy cocktail. When you’re good and sauced up and ready to hit on a twink (or whatever the lesbian counterpart of twink is) head west to Icandy (254 S 12th St.) -- 5 bars in 1 building, you can’t go wrong. Once you’re ready to impress your arm candy, head to Knock (225 S 12th St.) for the world’s strongest mimosa (not just a brunch drink). Now that you’ve

got some liquid courage, head to Tavern on Camac (243 S Camac St.) to sing a ditty by the piano or dance upstairs! When you’re ready to actually hear the person next to you, pop by next door to UBar (1220 Locust St.) for a quieter atmosphere and some awesome people-watching. If you’re still standing by this point, go get into some trouble in the dark basement of the Bike Stop (206 S Quince St.) but I am not responsible for what or who you pick up there!

1: The Bike Stop

3: ICandy

206 S. Quince St. 215.627.1662 | TheBikeStop.com The Bike Stop is Philly’s only leather scene. If you like body hair and jocks, then this is the spot for you. Strong, cheap drinks draw regulars; fetish gear encouraged. Billiards is popular here, but strip billiards is even more popular.

2: Boxers 1330 Walnut St. 215.735.2977 | BoxersNYC.com Philly’s newest gay sports bar is most known for its boy bartenders who wear nothing but gym shorts. When you’re looking for that #Masc4Masc date, it’s Boxers you want to be at.

In order to stomach the considerable amount of alcohol you’re ingesting, I suggest dinner before the “fruit loop.” Without leaving the gayborhood, you can get a delicious bite at either Bud and Marylin’s (1234 Locust St.) or Valanni (1229 Spruce St.). Oh! And if cocktails aren’t your thing, there is also some seriously awesome shopping right in the ‘hood. Check out the underware / bathing suit / harness collection at Nutz and Boltz (1220 Spruce St.) or grab yourself some wickedly scented soaps / lotions at Duross & Langel (117 S 13th St.). Both are owned up super hot (and gay) dudes!

254 S. 12th St. 267.324.3500 | ClubIcandy.com ICandy boasts a renovated bar and restaurant, dance floor and an intimate top-floor lounge that opens up to a summer roof deck. You’ll find the largest selection of twinky boys and thirsty gentleman looking to befriend each other for the evening.

4: Knock Restaurant & Bar 225 S. 12th St. 215.925.1166 | KnockPhilly.com Looking for a little more sophistication than a run-of-the-mill pub? Enjoy the chic atmosphere and mingle with a classy mixed crowd.

6: Tabu 200 S. 12th St. 215.964.9675 | TabuPhilly.com Catch the big game on the big screens at gay sports bar Tabu, or enjoy karaoke, drag shows and comedy acts upstairs. The most diverse crowds crowd Tabu, so you’re always going to find someone special to catch your attention.

7: Tavern on Camac 243 S. Camac St. 215.545.0900 | TavernOnCamac.com Nestled on one of Philly’s most charming streets is Tavern on Camac. Girls flock to the piano bar, but boys rule the upstairs dance floor. Everyone loves to sing in groups at the piano. Talent doesn’t matter, but attitude does!

10 navigaytour.com

8: Toasted Walnut 1316 Walnut St. 215.546.8888 | ToastedWalnut.com Philly’s newest lesbian bar makes sure EVERYONE feels welcome. Enjoy two bars, a lite fare menu and the occasional beer pong game. The decor in this bar is bright and inviting, and the staff are amazing! With multiple weekly events, you can’t go wrong stopping by.

9: UBar 1220 Locust St. 215.546.6660 | UbarPhilly.com Ubar boasts open windows and a fantastic corner view of the center of the Gayborhood. Enjoy happy hour beer and cocktails while drinking in the fabulous eye candy strolling down the street.

10: Voyeur 1221 St. James St. 215.735.5772 | VoyeurNightclub.com A 20,000-square-foot after-hours club, Voyeur showcases well-known DJs from around the country for gay guys and gals alike. When it’s 2am and you haven’t found that special someone, you’ve got 2 more hours and at least 4 more cocktails at Voyeur to lower your standards.

11: Woody’s 202 S. 13th St. 215.545.1893 | WoodysBar.com The guys may crowd Woody’s, but women also feel right at home during happy hour. The bar boasts 28 beers on tap and DJs spinning until last call. This is the place you find your late night sleepover buddy!

12: Writer’s Block Rehab 1342 Cypress St. 267.534.3134 WBR features an amazingly eclectic drink menu set in an awesome atmosphere. Immerse yourself in a craft beer on the top floor or “world bar”, or head downstairs and enjoy that beer in a decked out library. Head even further downstairs and sip on a hand crafted cocktail in the crossword themed bar. This place needs to be seen to be believed!

FOR THE

LADIES... 13: Stimulus 1221 Saint James St. 215.313.0048 Facebook.com/TheStimulus Women of all persuasions frequent these fashionable parties created by two lesbians who wanted an alternative to the usual nightlife scene. The most regular event, Back 2 Basics, happens every month at Stimulus, where female DJs spin old and new favorites to a packed house.

14: Franky Bradley’s 1320 Chancellor St. 215.735.0735 | Frankybradleys.com The venue that once housed Philly’s only lesbian bar (formerly Sisters) stays true to its roots with a regular lineup of gay-friendly events in its upper lounge. Kitschy artwork decorates the downstairs, where patrons can mingle at the bar or grab a table for dinner.
