LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

It’s hard to believe it’s been a full two years since the advent of ALT Magazine. It seems to me it was just a week ago that I was attending my first meeting, learning to work at a real publication, and finding the place I would soon consider a second home. A lot can change in two years. We’ve nearly quadrupled in size since 2017, as has our readership. We’ve been through five logo changes and two serious rebrandings. Dozens of members have come and gone. There is one thing, however, that will never change. ALT Magazine will continue to serve as a voice for underrepresented groups on campus. In this our ninth issue, we explore the theme of complex space. Like complex numbers, we too have a real part, easily seen and understood by those around us, and an inner part which lies in the space of abstraction, hidden from view. Our goal with this issue is to draw out those inner emotions, the inner self, and put it on full display, leaving us at our most vulnerable. With vulnerability inherently comes contradiction. There is weakness and strength, tenderness and hostility, profound sensuality and grotesqueness. It’s in our nature to want to simplify. To avoid these complexities in favor of something more easily digestible. I encourage you, the reader, to avoid this simplification at all costs. Embrace your inner conflict and find yourself vulnerable. I hope you find the odd sense of comfort and understanding that I have between these pages and lines of test. And I hope, too, that you discover two essential truths. One, that despite all our efforts we are intrinsically complex, multi-dimensional creatures. Two, that in this complexity, we are never truly alone. -Anna Sipek, EIC
