Bake-A-Change

In September of 2021, Alverno Heights Academy launched the annual Bake-A-Change fundraiser. For the past nine years, Alverno has been an advocate for young girls’ education through Bake-A-Change. Campus Ministry educated the students on the importance of donating to girls’ education. Students were shocked to find out that over 132 million girls around the world are currently out of school, and that one girl under the age of 18 is married every two seconds. Of course, we also got the school community excited for our goal: to donate $1,000 to girls’ education. As we started the kick-off our two weeks of fundraising filled with drawings, a Zoom bake off, and daily bake sales (both on-campus, and after school drive-thrus), the Alverno community could not have been more thrilled to donate to two worthwhile organizations: She’s the First, and WriteGirl, a Los Angeles based non-profit organization that offers a creative writing and mentoring program. With a 100% graduation rate of over 500 girls in the Los Angeles area, WriteGirl has helped establish these girls as female writers. This year, our theme was “to be brave enough to be light,” famously said by Amanda Gorman at President Biden’s Inauguration. As an alumna of WriteGirl, Ms. Gorman was able to explore her love of writing, which continues to help girls do the same. “When a girl gets what she deserves, she is unstoppable.”
