WISNER TRACT MASTERPLAN City Park Board New Orleans, Louisiana 2019 - 2020 Design Workshop, Inc. TEAM MEMBERS Landscape Arch. (Prime): Landscape Arch. (Sub): Civil Engineer: Environmental Consult:

Design Workshop, Inc. Dana Brown & Assoc. Batture, LLC Coastal Environments

Summary: In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, several feet of seawater destroyed much of City Park. The Wisner Tract, formerly the City Park Golf course, was left in a state of ecological disrepair, taken up by the community as a wild escape from city life. Fifteen years later, Wisner Tract will become a wildlife refuge and stormwater park for all residents of New Orleans. Project Goals: • • • • • •

Integration of diverse habitat types Engage the community Establish a framework of enhanced stormwater Create a unique New Orleans destination Plan for future maintenance Create an equitable experience for all community members

Personal Role: I assisted in the analysis, design, and graphic production. I also helped design and conduct six public meetings with residents of New Orleans to gather thoughts on vision, goals, design elements, and phasing. Near the end of the project, I put together a four-part financial opinion of probable cost to present to the Board of Directors.

ANALYSIS AND DESIGN SOLUTIONS Our design focused on developing large scale ecological and hydrological movements. These environmental considerations are paired with recreational opportunities to improve the current uses of the park. The goal was to ultimately protect the communal integrity of the park while restoring the historical principles of Southern Louisiana landscapes and create a functioning ecological center at the core of New Orleans.

SOUTHERN LOUISIANA LANDSCAPES Flood capacity defines native Southern Louisianian landscapes. Marshlands and cypress forests can withstand fluctuating water levels brought by yearly tropical storms and hurricanes, while meadows and live oak forests need more continuous conditions. The below plant species define these unique ecologies and are essential to the framework for our design.

INTEGRATING RECREATION City Park is centrally located in New Orleans, making it a unique destination for community members to enjoy native landscapes within a short drive from their homes. The park is a popular spot for passive recreation, and the needs of the community were essential to the design. As a result, the team integrated diverse trail types to make the park enjoyable and accessible to all residents.

BEFORE

FINAL DESIGN The final design expanded and protected the diminished landscape ecologies. The site now functions as both a recreational hub for New Orleans and a functional stormwater management landscape. The park is an oasis for all users, human and animal alike.

HILL COUNTRY RESIDENCE Private Owner Hays County, Texas 2020 Design Workshop, Inc. TEAM MEMBERS Architect (Prime): Landscape Architect: Civil Engineer:

Burleson Design Group Design Workshop, Inc. Dunaway Associates

Summary: The love of the land defines this rural residence, located in Central Texas Hill Country. Focused on minimal intervention and preservation, all design elements are detailed to limit their impact on the delicate meadowland and blend seamlessly into the karst limestone and Live Oak forests. Project Goals: • • •

Preserve and protect all existing heritage trees Reflect historical, cultural and ecologies features in all site elements Minimize impact on Live Oak forests and meadow ecologies

Personal Role: I assisted on the analysis and design of this project. I drafted almost the entire Design Development and Construction Document sets, as well as on-site staking of tree protection fencing.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT: To the right is an example of the design process for seat walls on site. Elements were first drawn by hand before being explored in 3D using Rhinoceros 3D. The team selected materials through a rendering process in Lumion. The client was presented with all three options during Design Development for their review to finalize the design. The remaining 3D models were the basis for the CAD details used in the Construction Document set.

OGDEN CITY MASTERPLAN Ogden City Parks Deparment Ogden, UT 2018 Utah State University CLASS: Urban Design Theory AWARDS: Utah APA, Student Work: Utah ASLA, Analysis + Planning:

Excellence Award Honor Award

Summary: Deeply divided by a large railyard, the Ogden City Masterplan works to reconnect the city’s disjointed neighborhoods and historic landmarks. Six groups, eighteen students, designed over 15,000 acres of urban and rural landscapes. The final portion of the masterplan was a 1” = 10’ scale cork and pinewood model created by all members of the team. Project Goals: • • • • •

Address transit and transportation complications in the city Enhance walkability and pedestrian connections Enhance and increase free green spaces around the city Preserve and enhance historical features around the city Address housing crisis by diversitfying the housing market

Personal Role As the leader of team four, I was in charge of directing and delegating work between three team members for our specific site. I was in charge of coordinating design efforts between all six team leaders and making final decisions for large scale design decisions. For the creation of the model, I lead the effort to laser cut all buildings for the model. I wrote and crafted an easily replicated process and coordinated with more than fifteen students to make the final product appear seamless.
