The Board of Trustees Honorary Committee and The Urban League of Essex County Welcome you to the
Power of 100 Centennial Celebration Honoring: Mayor Ras J. Baraka, Dr. Joel Bloom, Morgan DeBaun, James Rhee and PSEG
The MCJ Amelior Foundation congratulates the Urban League of Essex County for one-hundred years of exemplary service to the residents of Essex County.
November 9, 2018 Urban League of Essex County 508 Central Avenue Newark, New Jersey 07107 Dear Friends of the Urban League of Essex County: On behalf of the people of Newark, I would like to extend my best wishes to you as you hold your Centennial Anniversary dinner this evening! Founded in 1917 in Newark as the Negro Welfare League of New Jersey, the Urban League of Essex County shares a rich legacy and history in this city, through two World Wars, the Great Depression, the Civil Rights Era, and our city’s 21st-century revitalization. It has been at the forefront of positive change from a time of steam trains to the age of the internet, seeing our first African-American President. For more than 100 years, the organization has connected generations of Newark residents to critical community resources, living wage jobs and affordable housing. Today, with programs and services in the areas of childcare, job readiness, housing, and community development, the League continues to lead the path for neighbors to become empowered and to thrive. The organization is essential in the efforts to make Newark a community of choice. Today, the Urban League faces greater challenges than ever. A century of work and progress is threatened by the policies of an increasingly racist administration, militarized police departments that disrespect the citizens they are sworn to protect and serve, and so-called “white nationalists” who are causing pain and tragedy across the nation to African-American and other communities. I know that the Urban League will face these challenges with greater energy than before, because its best days are in front of it. All the best for a joyous and memorable dinner and for another century of success! Sincerely,
Ras J. Baraka Mayor

Letter from the President and CEO Dear Friends of the Urban League, I am pleased to welcome you to our Centennial Gala, “The Power of 100. Thank you for coming to this historic event. It is a grand celebration of the legacy and power of the Urban League movement. The Urban League of Essex County was founded in 1917 to address the needs of African Americans migrating north from the Jim Crow South in search of jobs and a better life. Unfortunately, one hundred years later, the doors of opportunity are not yet fully opened to people of color. While our centennial year is a time to reflect on the rich history and legacy of the Urban League, these times call for us to come together and to take action. Barriers to opportunity still exist and that means the Urban League is needed to address the disparities of today. We want to use this moment to rally our friends and partners to join with us in tackling some of the most pressing and persistent problems facing families and communities. As we embark on the next 100 years of service, we invite you to share our mission of ensuring that all of Essex County’s residents can realize their potential and fully participate in the American dream. I appreciate your support and sincerely thank you for joining us in this landmark celebration as we move to the next 100 years of service to the Essex County community! Sincerely, Vivian

Our History: The Power of 100
Our belief in the American dream - that everyone should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative - has taken the Urban League of Essex County through a century of empowering local residents. When we began our work 100 years ago, leather factories, iron works, breweries, and other factories thrived along the Morris Canal. Black workers streamed into Essex County from the South, escaping Jim Crow oppression and drawn by the plentiful jobs and available housing stock. The Urban League was formed “to improve the social, economic, and moral conditions” of these new arrivals, who found that discrimination had followed them northward, despite the greater opportunities. Our founders named William Ashby as their first leader; the son of black landowners in Virginia and a recent Yale graduate, and New Jersey’s first trained social worker. “The Urban League at that time was the only organization whose purpose and aim might give direction to the solution of some of the problems,” Ashby later explained in his memoir, Tales Without Hate. Prohibition and the Great Depression hit the area hard. Manufacturers left the city, and so did many of the people they employed; those who remained were predominantly poor and black. Under Mr. Ashby’s leadership, the League sought
“to obtain for Negroes more and better jobs, to find better houses for them to live in…and to have them fit in as responsible citizens in the community.” The Urban League of Essex County led social research and planning initiatives, provided job training, and assisted troubled youth. During the second half of the twentieth century the American economic base shifted again, this time from manufacturing to services. The Urban League of Essex County began to train local residents in the “soft skills” of business, successfully placing them in white-collar jobs that had previously been unavailable to blacks at companies such as Prudential Life Insurance Co. and New Jersey Bell Telephone. Even so, as job opportunities continued to dwindle for Newark’s black working class and racial and economic equality failed to materialize from civil rights victories, long-simmering tensions boiled over in 1967. The beating of a black taxi driver by white police officers set off 5 summer days of protest. Corporations left the area in the aftermath, along with white and more affluent residents. During this time the Urban League of Essex County found new ways to fortify the communities that remained. The League helped women heading households to transition to work. In the 1980s the ULTRA partnership with IBM taught data entry, word processing, computer programming and other in-demand technology expertise; while in the 1990s a Family Technology Center opened to address the digital divide in home computer access. Over the last decade, the Urban League of Essex County has transitioned from a social services agency to a comprehensive community development corporation. Our programs are designed to revitalize local neighborhoods, such as Early Childhood, Urban Youth Empowerment, Urban Seniors Jobs, Financial Opportunity Center, Housing Counseling, Real Estate Development, Community Development and ThriftWORKS. As the late Rutgers University professor Clement Alexander Price noted, “When Newark was at the center of New Jersey’s urban universe, the League was at the center of the quest for equal opportunity. And when New Jersey’s and Essex County’s suburbs distanced themselves from Newark, the League...led the charge to connect all residents… to a common ideal of justice, opportunity and progress for all.” As we embark on the next 100 years of service, we invite you to share our mission of ensuring that all of Essex County’s residents can realize their potential and fully participate in the American dream.

Lift Every Voice and Sing:Negro National Anthem Lift every voice and sing Till earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of Liberty; Let our rejoicing rise High as the listening skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us, Facing the rising sun of our new day begun Let us march on till victory is won.
Stony the road we trod, Bitter the chastening rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, Have not our weary feet Come to the place for which our fathers sighed? We have come over a way that with tears have been watered, We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered, Out from the gloomy past, Till now we stand at last Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.
God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who has brought us thus far on the way; Thou who has by Thy might Led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, Our God, where we met Thee; Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee; Shadowed beneath Thy hand, May we forever stand. True to our GOD, True to our native land.
