CONSUMER Emma is a 27 year old Veterinary technician that commutes from her home in Santa Cruz to San Jose for work 5 days a week. On weekends, her activities involve hiking, surfing, going out with friends, and taking her dog with her to the beach. She is sporty, active, and adventurous. She likes modern design and architecture but won’t exchange comfort for minimalism when it comes to transportation.
Alyssa Belanio I alyssabelanio@gmail.com 85
HATCH CONCEPTS Initial Ford hatchback design explorations began with sketches of side profiles, front, and rear 3/4 views to understand what each perspective portrays. My development of dynamic, active, sporty yet compact concepts reflect back to fit the needs of my targeted consumer. Added shadows and reflections help identify the overall form.

Alyssa Belanio I alyssabelanio@gmail.com 87
CLAY MODELING I first created MDF templates with my orthographic projection as a reference. The templates were used as a guide to form the basic shape of the 1/16 scale hatch. Pink foam is then glued to the bottom skateboard, carved to its rough shape, and punctured with holes in order for the clay to bond. The foam is then covered completely in clay and shaped closer to the final design using rake tools and knives for detailed cuts, using the templates as reference.

EXPLORER INDIVIDUAL PROJECT
Objective Design a product for children that can help strengthen their communication and interaction skills with family and friends
Alyssa Belanio I alyssabelanio@gmail.com 93
RESEARCH
Initial research began in groups where we contriubuted findings of both common and uncommon activities and interests of boys ages 8 to 10. From there we mapped out morning and evening routines, taking note of products and people boys interact with during the day at school or at home.
94 alyssabelanio.com
TARGET USER My target users are boys ages 8-10 that are into outdoor activities and learning about nature but get sucked in at home by video games, tablets, and computers, losing physical interactions with friends and family members.
Alyssa Belanio I alyssabelanio@gmail.com 95
SCENARIO THINKING My initial ideation consisted of different possibilities of connecting children with friends and family members by observing products children use during play time. I developed use of products like cameras, projectors, magnifying lenses, and binoculars through different scenarios and storyboards.

FORM DEVELOPMENT I selected to develop the shared binoculars concept from my initial mock ups and progressed towards a more rugged octagon form after finding that 8-10 year old boys are fond of playful yet aggressive volumes. Along with form development, I focused on detail refinement which included the grips, zoom and power buttons, charge and partline locations.
Alyssa Belanio I alyssabelanio@gmail.com 99
ASSEMBLY For the neck straps I first tried out strips of leather with snap fasteners and switched over to nylon after noticing that it looks more playful when attached to the rest of the parts. The snaps on the sides of the straps allow the binoculars to be easily shared or used alone. Magnets in each half let users separate it or keep it as one unit.

Battery & Storage
IMPROVING EXPERIENCE To improve the fashion in which hearing aids are marketed and seen, I dug deeper and found that there are design opportunities for battery and storage, comfort, and communication -as individuals with moderate to severe hearing loss often mispronounce words since they can’t hear how it sounds.
With advancing technologies, rechargeable batteries are becoming more of an eco-friendly and costefficient option for hearing aid users. Rechargeables are already available for most BTE and ITE hearing aids, offering improved power in addition to environmental and cosmetic advantages.
Some users store their hearing aids in a handy make-up bag, or something “nicer that they normally carry with them when they travel like a pen case, coin purse, or a small all-purpose travel pouch.

Taking note of sensitive parts of the ear as well as learning that individuals with moderate to severe hearing loss need to use occluding ear tips such as ones used in many headphones
Individuals with moderate to severe hearing loss often mispronounce words because they can’t hear many vowels or consonants enough to recognize words.
Alyssa Belanio I alyssabelanio@gmail.com 109
MODERN FASHION
CONCEPT GENERATION My initial ideas consist of jewelry-inspired forms as well as explorations of battery and storage, and ways to bring livelihood and interaction into what’s seen as just hearing aids. From my findings of speech and communication difficulties amongst hearing impaired individuals, I developed ways of incorporating accessories such an attachable microphone to bring during meetings, a sign language translation device to break the barrier between non-hearing impaired and hearing impaired, and lastly, a throat microphone to communicate with an app for speech improvement

3D DEVELOPMENT From my variety of organic to geometric form exploration, I decided to develop more angular, geometric styles to relate back to modern business fashion. Out of my three main concepts of enhancing the experience of hearing aid users, I chose to expand on the idea of a hearing aid kit that includes a rechargeable hearing aid, portable throat microphone and a personal case for easy storage. The throat microphone can be used at home or when traveling, to pick up vibrations from the voice box and communicate with an app that can help users track and improve their speech.

TECHNOLOGIES Transform
Project Soli
TRANSFORM is an exploration of how shape display technology can be integrated into our everyday lives as interactive, shape changing furniture. These interfaces not only serve as traditional computing devices, but also support a variety of physical activities.
Project Soli is a sensor that can easily be used in even the smallest wearables. It is capable of accurately detecting your hand movements in real-time, meaning it’s a lot like Leap Motion and other gesture-tracking controllers. But instead of using cameras, Project Soli uses radar technology that fits within a tiny chip.
By creating shapes on demand or by moving objects around, TRANSFORM changes the ergonomics, functionality and aesthetic dimensions of furniture.
Jam Sheets
Project Jacquard
Jam Sheets introduces layer jamming as an enabling technology for designing deformable, stiffness-tunable, thin sheet interfaces. Interfaces that exhibit tunable stiffness properties can yield dynamic haptic feedback and shape deformation capabilities
Project Jacquard makes it possible to weave touch and gesture interactively into any textile using standard, industrial looms. Everyday objects such as clothes and furniture can be transformed into interactive surfaces. Conductive Jacquard yarn structures combine thin, metallic alloys with natural and synthetic yarns like cotton, polyester, or silk, making the yarn strong enough to be woven on any industrial loom.
Alyssa Belanio I alyssabelanio@gmail.com 121
HOME VISITS As part of our research, we visited and interviewed several homeowners to identify problem areas within their living spaces
Lighting Problems We found various problems regarding lighting with several homeowners. Not having enough overall lighting in one area of the home caused family members to split up in different rooms, while another family used three floor lamps in one room to brighten up their home since the ceiling light was not enough.

INSPIRATION Photuris Firefly Photuris fireflies produce bioluminescent light from an organ in their abdomen called a lantern. Bioluminescence occurs when oxygen combines with calcium, adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and the light-emitting chemical, luceferin.
Surface Composition
Ribs
Jagged misfit or serrated scales found on the abdomen contribute to the firefly’s ability to light efficiently.
Misfit Scales
Each scale is about 10 microns (0.0004 in.) long. Each scale is tilted so that one edge of the scale protrudes from the body plane by just 3 micrometers. The protruding tips of the scales scatter light. The transmission intensity and light extraction are higher at these tips, about 55% more light than a flat surface

APPLICATIONS
Project Jacquard
Project Soli
Using Projects Jacquard’s technology we can “sew” in sensors into the wall. This allows the user to change the settings of the lights without using a switch.
Utilizing the movement and gesture recognition technology in Project Soli, the lights are able to sense where a person is and concentrate the light on where they are walking, working, etc.
Motion Sensitive Modular Panel MC# 5903-01 Motion sensitive modular panels. These arrays of colored LED panels light up in response to motion above the panel. These motion sensors can work through translucent materials. The individual modules may be combined to create a wide range of arrays.

QUENCH GROUP PROJECT
Objective Design an app that can help caregivers access and plan proper nutrition for chemotherapy patients
Alyssa Belanio I alyssabelanio@gmail.com 133
CANCER & CHEMOTHERAPY Cancer and chemotherapy treatments take a toll on patient’s overall mental, physical, and spiritual health. We found that at least 70% of cancer patients experience fatigue during and after chemotherapy. During treatments, many patients rely on their caregiver to manage their meals and dietary needs. But various medication can cause dietary complications, requiring patients to adopt to specialized meals.
134 alyssabelanio.com
DESIGN OPPORTUNITIES After identifying key issues, my group and I brainstormed and expanded other problem areas in the chemotherapy experience that could be improved -from different perspectives whether it be for the patient, nurse, or caregiver. The three main concepts we narrowed down to was nutrition, medicine, and symptom management.

STORYBOARDING From our brainstorms and the information we obtained throughout our research, we began thinking more in depth about how our concepts could play out in certain scenarios. Our storyboards consisted of App ideas that could make medication management more convenient, proper nutrition information recommendations by medicine type, as well as delivery-inspired services to help patients maintain their dietary needs during chemotherapy.
Alyssa Belanio I alyssabelanio@gmail.com 137
PERSONA From our interviews with chemotherapy patients as well as their family caregivers, we found an opportunity to help the caregiver help the patient. These family caregivers already have a lot on their mind, arranging anything from meals to doctor appointments for their loved ones and handling their own daily tasks at the same time
