VALIANCE
CHILDREN’S ONCOLOGY CENTER SEMESTER: SPRING 2014 PROFESSORS: DEB NORMAN + ERIN BECLOFF At Valiance Children’s Oncology Center, the patients are treated as warriors. The center seeks to bring the vision to reality by preparing the patients for battle against cancer. Each warrior will become a hero at Valiance. The procedures that they encounter can cause even the strongest people to be discouraged. However, at Valiance they are given the determination, care, and family friendly resources needed to become victorious. The different colors and alternating ceiling panels represent the different battles that the patients will conquer to win the war. This project received the Angelo Donghia Senior Scholarship Award of $30,000.
VALIANCE PROJECT I
WAITING ROOM
Patients have the opportunity to be photographed with war paint in front of the background of their choice. Their pictures will then be displayed on the “Warrior Wall”. The “Warrior Wall” is an interactive screen that allows kids to play games and see their pictures while they are waiting for their treatment. Children will be encouraged to be brave and to win the battle.

CANARY WHARF
SQUARE CIRCLE ENERGY EFFICIENT DESIGN SEMESTER: SUMMER 2013 PROFESSORS: J.E. ELLIOTT Our project was to design a multi-use building for an innovative advertising agency that provides creative services to their clients. The goal of our project was to design a space as creative and energetic as our client. Our concept was to design a building that stands apart from the corporate lifestyle of Canary Wharf, London. We took the orthogonal shapes of a traditional corporate building and twisted them to create a spiral building that would stand out.
CANARY WHARF PROJECT II
The building form was taken from the other surrounding buildings in Canary Wharf, London. My partner and I began with a typical corporate structure. We then started to skew and distort the building form to mock the typical corporate structure. This concept was inspired by the creative and innovative advertising agency that would own and occupy part of the building. Our client would occupy three floors of the building, while the rest of the space would be leasable space.

CHAIR
DESIGN AND BUILD SEMESTER: SPRING 2014 PROFESSORS: GULEN CEVIK The concept for my project was based off of the movement of a waterfall. The chair has a continuous motion that flows from the top and makes its way down the chair and around the back. I decided to create the slits in the chair to help to show the movement and the rhythm of the water as it flows. It also helps to make the chair lighter and more delicate. I arrived at the shape of the chair through many different iterations. The shape of the chair acts as a waterfall as the person sits by helping to mold to the person’s body.

CLIFTON LIBRARY PROJECT
SEMESTER: SPRING 2013 PROFESSORS: J. ELLIOTT Clifton is a very diverse and exciting neighborhood. It is filled with art, culture, religion, and community. After visiting the area we realized that the community was missing a central meeting place. My group and I wanted to create a town center. A place where people of all backgrounds could come and gather at a central location.

CHUTE GERDEMAN OFFICE SPACE DESIGN
SEMESTER: FALL 2014 PROFESSORS: STEVE SENDELBECK + DARA BALDRIDGE Chute Gerdeman is a branding and retail design firm located in Columbus, Ohio. The goal of this project was to take a company of our choosing and design a new office space for them in a building located in Cincinnati, Ohio. I had the opportunity to interview designers from the firm as well as visit their office in Columbus to gain a better understanding of their company culture as well as their needs and wants in an office environment. My concept for this project was “modern family”.

RECEPTION
I learned that Chute Gerdeman has a culture that is very welcoming and collaborative. The designers described their firm as a big family that was open to everyone’s ideas and criticism. To incorporate my concept into the space I related the office floor plan to that of a house floor plan. Instead of a lobby there was a foyer. Clients are welcomed into the space through a formal living room which displays the firms accomplishments and awards. While the employees feel as though they are coming home when they are going into work.

PHOTOGRAPHY LOCATION,: LONDON, ENGLAND + NYC, NEW YORK
I took these photos during my travels with different programs through Miami University. I studied abroad in London, England with the architecture department for a summer program. During my stay in London I learned the importance of preserving architecture while still designing new and improved ideas that collaborate with existing structures. I also visited New York City with the IIDA chapter at Miami. While visiting NYC I enjoyed visiting different architecture and design firms while getting the opportunity to explore the city.
