N E W U R B A N S E T T L E M E N T PAT T E R N S F I N D I N G N E W U R B A N S E T T L E M E N T PAT T E R N S BASED ON TRADITIONAL AND CONTEMPORARY HOUSING STRUCTURE. A typological study design for residential neighborhoods.

The brief for this task was to design a project that addresses the two big issues that are on the agenda of Oman today: urban growth as well as tourism development. The Thesis took place in the city of Nakhal whereas the two issues intersect. As Nakhal, with its fort and hot springs, is a prominent destination for international tourists as well as a leisure place that residents from Oman enjoy visiting.

Ph otos shows t he open s p a c e s i n th e n e i g h b o rh o ods i n ol d and new tow n of N akhal .

Old cities develop from the core where an important monument is located such as a fort or a castle in a historical city. Therefore, the growth of the settlements starts from the core gradually expanding to the outside. This definition of urban growth was lost and undefined in Welayat Nakhal, as the new city developed away from the old (historical) city as if each one is isolated from the other. However, this can be a result of the need to live near the road for easy access, unlike living near the natural resources as the old days. To overcome this problem of the two separated towns, it is considered to reconnect the historical and new together to make them as one town. ‘As one’ term might not work on the already existing towns but it can work on the gap between the two towns. However, one of the factors that led to this separation is the neighborhood structure. Because if this structure has lack of communication, connection to the outside. Then naturally it is not expected for the two towns to go together. As a result, this problem needs to be solved from the core which is looking at the plot structure.

It wasn’t there, as the communication element between people was very strong. It exists to create privacy and to keep distance from neighboring elements.

YAR D The open space used to be on the roof of the house and on the alleyway. It is within the boundary wall to the house space.

The firs t private yard is a yard on roof of the the ho use.

ALLEYWAY It used to be alleyways for pedestrian walks and the communication used to happen mainly on it. A road that goes around the plot or a cluster for access.

URBAN DEVELOPMENT IN ISLANDS IN OMAN. R E D E V E L O P I N G A N D C R E AT I N G N E W U R B A N S E T T L E M E N T S A N D C O A S TA L FA C I L I T I E S F O R YOUTH IN MASIRAH ISLAND. The brief for this task is to study the developments around livable islands in Oman. These islands are an important tourist destination due to its beauty and tranquility nature. Masirah is the biggest island in Oman and the development in it is very slow and weak especially in the city center ‘Hilf’. This is the focus of this project. Hilf has only minor facilities that serve the elder community in terms of job opportunit i e s a n d l e i s u r e f o r t o u r i s t s . H o w e v e r, t h e local youth cause noise and damage due to the lack of zones or services that serves them. As a result, the projects aims to merge the youth with the community by focusing on the vacant lands in the city center and develop it with youth facilities in a way that connects with the existing neighborhoods by creating communal spaces in between. Through a roof that works as a connection between the main zones on the ground.

OLD SETTLEMENT HIGH DENSITY LESS VACANT LANDS

The plan shows that the first settlements of Hilf city started from the north, where the old port is located. The different industrial, commercial, residential and educational zones has no specific fabric or planning, whereas all the zones overlap with each other. However, the new and future settlements are planned towards the southern side of the village, where the vacant lands are located.

M A L E P R AY E R R O O M The task was to design a prayer room for males who are using the sport facilities in the German university of Te c h n o l o g y in Oman. The idea of the design is to use the walls as orientation and to guide people into certain functions. The aim of this project was to teach the students how to deal with natural material such as mud and earth for walls and wood for roof. The concept was to have one continues wall w i t h d i ff e r e n t o r i e n t a t i o n s t h a t h a s v e r t i c a l strips that works as openings for the light and ventilation and to give the visitor the experience of light and shade in the room. The process of the project went through 3 steps: Build (studies, earthen brick wall, rammed earth wall and roof), Design (disc o v e r, d e f i n e , d e v e l o p , a n d d e l i v e r ) a n d Plan (Presenting male prayer room).

This brief design task was about delivering a massage to the community through a c r e a t i v e o r u n u s u a l w a y. ‘ C a r s p e e d l i m i t s ’ was the issue that occurs in my neighborhood. Drivers speed in the tertiary roads in the neighborhood as there are people walking or kids playing on the side. Therefore, the concept of the intervention is to reduce the drivers speed through catching their attention to something unique in the road. As a result, the implementation was to use the military wall as a main material and to draw on one of its parts a Soldier that is holding a Kalashnikov or a gun in big scale in order to scare the drivers and send a massage to them to reduce their speed because the soldier is watching them.
