ABOUT ME
LET ME INTRODUCE MYSELF: Hi, I’m Amaani and I am currently a designer from a product background where my skills are in research + development, sketching, ideation, and 3D CAD. Throughout my time I have taken a deeper interest in user experience and interaction. I enjoy creating new concepts and following them through to the final stage. My product background enables me to transfer my skill set and design process into other areas such as graphic, UI/UX and branding.
I believe design is all around us and everything has been designed to make our lives easier and more enjoyable. For me, design is about making tasks more comfortable; but also about evolution and expanding user’s thinking. I design with the user in mind and enjoy taking risks and challenging preconceptions with new ideas.

INITIAL IDEAS
CARD PROTOTYPES
Quick card prototypes to better understand form and how one sheet would bend to create the desired form.
DEVELOPMENT
FURTHER DEVELOPMENT
DEVELOPMENT OVERVIEW Change to a softer form with smooth curves
Sharpness at the top of the design took away from the softness of the design
A softer shape yet still not reflective of a peacful and calm night light
More feather like shape to reflect calmness and sleep
The two elements do not look cohesive. Needs to be redeisgned to look like one product
Softer more flowing shape with a more unified form
Feathers incased in a frosted glass for a softer and less cliche look. Frosted glass also allows for a softer light to be emitted
COLOUR RANGE
BLACK: Darker more sophiticated colour that can fit in most bedrooms
LIGHT GREY: Neutral and balanced colour. Softer than black
WHITE: Peaceful, pure colour. Connotates simplicity and clarity
ROSE GOLD: Metal adds a touch of luxury, more feminine colour
FINAL PRODUCT
A sleep tracker that also functions as a night light and alarm clock when paired with the app.
To use the product as a lamp simply press the button when the sleep tracker is not activated. If the sleep tracker is activated simply double tap the button.
When you are ready for bed simply activate the lamp via the app. The button will glow to indicate the lamp is ready. You can now put your phone away and once you’re ready to sleep press the button again and the lamp will track your sleep.
There is also an alarm option where you can slect a time frame and the alarm will go off during your lightest period of sleep to ensure you wake up refreshed. The alarm will wake you up gently along with a dim light. Press the button again to switch off the alarm. In the morning view your stats on your mobile app and make note of any other information such as dreams, or activities that would have affcted your sleep such as exercise or alcohol.

THE PROBLEM
HOW CAN THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THOSE WITH ONE FUNCTIONING HAND AND THE KITCHEN BE IMPROVED?
RESEARCH FOCUS GROUP
INTERVIEW
CASE STUDIES
PRODUCT ANALYSIS
INSIGHTS
• Cracking an egg was rated as the most difficult task by the focus group • Used without any assistance to promote independence
• A product that can be used without prosthetics as many upper limb amputees don’t wear them
• Manually powered (no electronics) to provide sense of accomplishment
• Steer away from current cold, clinical products which indicate the user has a disability
TARGET USER AND NEEDS Focus Group Data 1
SOMETHING TO HOLD EGG IN PLACE
esf
NO SHELL CREATE POSITIVE EXPERIENCE
REDUCE MESS
Interview Results “They’re very uncomfortable to wear, it’s almost like a gun holster. They found it was rubbing their armpit and uncomfortable, so they didn’t really bother with upper limb as much” OT
USED WITH NO PROSTHETICS
“You don’t really want a massive piece of equipment that does 60 million jobs because you don’t need 60 million jobs in one go” OT
PERFORM ONE FUNCTION WELL
“Thats why some people refuse to have them because they look dreadful...People don’t want their house to look like a hospital. More choice would be great, but you’re limited to what is available on the NHS.” OT
AESTHETICALLY PLEASING
“At the end of the day you just want people to be as independent as possible, without carers.” OT
USE INDEPENDENTLY

1. Bulky and plain (no personality)
AESTHETIALLY PLEASING
2. Better aesthteics but still clinical and very bulky
REDUCE SIZEBETTER ERGONOMICS
3. Not equal force applied, function needs improving
FUNCTION IS PRIORITY
4. Better aesthetics but still requires two hands
USE WITH ONE HAND
INITIAL IDEAS
Yellow dots represent user voting
Improving an existing products
Materialising mechanisms into products
Slicing the top of the shell off
Create a small hole for egg to pour out
2 in 1 bowl and egg cracker so egg falls directly in bowl for mixing
Cracking an egg in half. Trainee one hand egg cracker to teach technique
MECHANISM DEVELOPMENT
Initial prototype to test cutting the shell
Testing rig to experiment with different blades and angles
1
The handles were made smaller
4
The grip was then added which would push the blade in and allow it to spring back
2
A 3D printed blade holder was created. There are various holes to test different positions of hinges
5
The grip and blade holder made as one (lateral movement)
7
3
With the best position identified a CAD model was mocked up
6
A hinge was created above the blade holder
8
The previous design meant the spring would not compress later- The final mechanism included three of the grips that are shown ally. The spring was removed to save space and an elastic band above. A hook added for the elastic band to attach to. These added. would snap onto a ring which the grip would rotate around.
FORM DEVELOPMENT
FINAL PRODUCT
USER INTERACTION
FEATURES
1 2
No bulky suction cups, instead a weighted ring and textured silicone base
Lip allows the two halves to move concentrically and has stops to indicate the shell has been completely cut Lip also catches any residue and prevents it from dripping down product or worktop
3 4 5
Keeping the grips pressed keeps hold of the cut shell to throw directly into bin
Silicone keeps grip of the egg shell while pouring and accomodates for different sized eggs Blades are concealed and only protrude when grips are kept pressed
6 7 8
Easy to wash: Pour water in and shake or run blades under tap
Designed with form in mind to steer away from current products that are ‘cold, clinical and bulky, or products that indicate the user has a disability’ Stainless steel to add a feel of affordable luxury and accents of metal are currently in trend Soft tactile silicone to provide a welcoming feel and promote interactions Intuitive design created by colour, material and texture
FUNCTIONAL PROTOTYPE
SCAN ME TO SEE THE EGG CRACKER IN ACTION https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_DDyK0wO7Q
NEXT STEPS GRIPS
By pressing one grip, the other two grips automtocaaly also move in.
FORM
Create a more ergonomic shape to sit on the palm for comfort.
ALLIGNMENT
Having an external visual element that lets the user know when the two halves are correctly alligned and in the starting position.
BLADE
Changing the blade to a double ended blade to allow the blade to cut in either direction and be more comfortable for users who prefer turning anticlockwise.
DIFFERENT SIZED EGGS
Have a mechanism at the base which could adjust the size of the cavity. Rotate the metal ring and this would adjust the size of the inner cavity. This would work kind of like a camera lens opening and closing. The user would simply place the egg in, rotate till the cavity grips the egg and then crack the egg.
SHELL REMOVAL
The previous solution also addresses the issue of using a finger to pull out the shell. Once the egg contents have been tipped out the user can simply rotate the metal ring to loosen the grip on the egg shell. This can then be tipped out into a bin or bowl.
CLEANING
The top needs to be redesigned so that the inside has a ‘wall’. This allows for easy cleaning and stops mess.

NICE TO THE TOUCH
5 Whys WHY do you bring your own towel to the gym? So I can wipe away my sweat and wipe down machines
WHY do you wipe your hands on your clothes? Because it’s easy and convenient
CONVENIENCE
WHY? It’s hygienic. I don’t want to use a machine someone has sweated on
WHY? It’s hygienic because I use my own towel. I’m more comfortable with my own towel. Also I’m not spreading sweat around
HYGIENE
CONTROL
WHY? I don’t have to move away and my clothes are always on me
WHY? I’m working out where the equipment is. I don’t mind moving between exercises though
WHY? A communal towel would make me feel dirty. This way I have control over my towel and how I use it
WHY? Leads back to hygiene. People have different hygiene habits.
WHY? That way it doesn’t affect my routine
WHY? I’m already in the mindset, I use moving from machines as a way to catch my breath.
FIT ROUTINE
“It’s just a nuisance when my hands get sweaty, it makes me feel dirty because I’m using shared equipment and I’m not going to go all the way to the toilet to wash and dry my hands while I’m working out” Claire (23), Avid gym user
INITIAL IDEAS
QUICK PROTOTYPES
When the solution needs refilling it is possible to wash/soak the product in warm water to clean it, before adding the next batch of solution. This increases Carpe’s longevity.
NEXT STEPS PACKAGING
Concerns were raised over Carpe becoming dirty or dust sticking to the solution. The solution is quick evaporating, however if Carpe’s original packaging could be retained and used as a case to prevent any unwanted secretion.
