This afternoon relax on board as the vessel continues towards Esztergom and Budapest. 3 Esztergom/ Excursion to Esztergom and Szentendre to explore the artists’ colony of Szentendre, home to numerous contemporary Budapest galleries and museums reflecting the artistic history of Hungary. Rejoin the ship in Budapest. 4 Belgrade Today visit Belgrade, one of the oldest European cities and the capital of Serbia. The City tour of Belgrade takes you to the Kalemegdan Fortress, for an impressive panoramic view over the Danube and the Sava Rivers. Afterwards, see the National Museum, the Parliament, Terazije Square and the Palace of Princess Ljubica as well as St. Sava Cathedral, the largest Orthodox church in the world. After a refreshment break at the Hotel Majestic, your tour ends with a visit to the pedestrian zone, with its many shops and art galleries. 5 Vidin Excursion to Vidin and Belogradchik — discover this ancient Bulgarian town with an imposing presence over the river. 6 Oltenita/ Travel to the beautiful capital city of Romania for the City tour of Bucharest. Your tour starts with a photo stop at the impressive Fetesti Romanian Palace of the Parliament — previously known as the “People’s House” — is one of the largest buildings in Europe. The tour continues along the magnificent boulevards with their imposing buildings, past the Opera House and Cotroceni Palace. A walk through the historic center of Bucharest allows time to explore this historic city on your own before rejoining the ship. 7 Danube Delta/ Spend the morning cruising Sfantu Gheorghe, one of the 3 main channels that make up the Danube Delta. This channel stretches St George Village some 67 miles and carries 23% of the Danube’s total water flow. The Boat Excursion Delta Safari adventure starts at the end of the oldest and wildest arms of the Danube, in the small and picturesque fishermen’s village of Saint George. This calm and remote area is only accessible by boat or flight. Situated in the largest compact area of reed beds on the planet, the village is full of traditionally thatched cottages. In these remote areas, communication with the mainland is difficult or even impossible when the river freezes over. The safari boats have a capacity of 8 to 9 persons each and are piloted by skilled expedition leaders for an unforgettable exploration of the Danube Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a vital bird sanctuary. The expedition takes you to the narrow channels of the Danube Delta, as well as to the newly-emerged Sahalin Lagoon. The shallow waters around the Sahalin Peninsula are an excellent place for pelicans to gather and feed, together with cormorants and black-headed gulls. Bordering the banks, clumps of reeds and white willows hide nests of Herons, Glossy Ibises, Egrets, Penduline Tits, Terns and European Rollers. 8 Hirsova/ Excursion to Constanta with Black Sea Coast — Explore Constanta, which lies on the western coast of the Black Sea. An ancient Fetesti metropolis which traces its history some 2500 years to the Greek colonists. Conquered by the Romans in 71 BC, this settlement was renamed Constantiana by Roman Emperor Constantine the Great. The third largest city in Romania, it is an important cultural and economic center. 9 Rousse/ Excursion to Veliko Tarnovo Travel by bus towards Veliko Tarnovo, picturesquely located on the steep banks of the river Yantra Svistov at the foot of the Balkan Mountains. Pass the fortress Tsarevets, where 22 tsars made history in the 2nd Bulgarian empire. Visit the 13th-century church St. Peter and Paul, which is one of the few medieval churches which has been kept intact and used for worship since the beginning of XIII century until the earthquake in 1913. 10 Iron Gates Today is spent on a day passage cruising the mighty Danube River and the picturesque ‘Iron Gates”. The Iron Gates is a narrow gorge between the Carpathian and Balkan Mountains which forms a natural border between Serbia and Romania, featuring breathtaking scenery. 11 Novi-Sad Novi-Sad City tour of Novi Sad and Sremski Karlovci — Begins with a journey to Monastery Krusedol, followed by a visit to Vukovar Novi-Sad, the second largest city in Serbia. A stroll through the city recalls the time of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. During the tour see the Catholic St. Mary’s Church, the Orthodox Church of St. George and the home of Albert Einstein. On the way to Sremski Karlovci pass the fortress Peterwardein, which was built by the French architect Vauban and was one of Europe’s largest defense structures in the 18th century. Discover the cathedral during a tour of the Baroque Old Town, as well as the Patriarch’s Palace and the Theological School. After a refreshment break rejoin the ship by coach. The Excursion to Vukovar features this historic city, positioned on an important transport route in the Danube Valley, with Budapest and Vienna upstream and Romania downstream. Although Vukovar was heavily damaged during the Croatian War of Independence, many symbols of its rich cultural heritage still stand — the Eltz Manor, the Franciscan Monastery and the Orthodox Church of St Nicholas. 12 Mohacs/Kalocsa This morning features a Walking tour of Mohacs the site of 2 notable battles in 1526 and 1687 which represented the beginning DANUBE DELTA and end of the Ottoman domination of Hungary. This afternoon join an optional Excursion to the Puszta. We invite you for a historical journey to see how paprika became the “red gold” of the Kalocsa Region. A visit to the “Paprika House” will give you the opportunity to taste specialties made from paprika.Visit the 19th-century home of a local upper-class farmer family, and enjoy a short folk dance performance. Continue to the Hungarian Puszta to enjoy the scenery of the endless plain, where the sky stretches into the horizon, giving you the impression of unlimited freedom. Enjoy the local hospitality while quenching your thirst with cool red or white wine or apple juice while admiring the galloping of the beautiful Hungarian half-blood horses.
