Dear Members, I woke up this morning to find that its already July, Cold and wintery it may be but its already halfway through the year and I feel that I haven’t achieved half of what I set out to do in January. We can only reiterate what most of the guilds, in their reports, find.time is really running out, with half of the year gone already. Many quilters are busy with their entries for the September Quilt Competition and we will them all the best. Maybe we will see the 1st prize winners and Best on show comming from KZN again. We certainly hope so. We also hope that all are participating in the “Quilts for Children” to be shown at the NQG meeting in November. This is an important show for us as we hope to showcase quilting in the Durban area to the general public and we cant do it without your active participation. Izotsha is also not to be missed. This is comming up in October and neither is the Hobby-X Exhibition in August. There is lots to do to keep the quilters busy. The colder weather certainly helps when it comes to quilting so quilt on, ladies, quilt on! Please note the editor’s new fax number for enquiries or articles.

There are quilting projects, knitting, crochet and even sewing clothes for my grand child -something I haven't done in years! Definitely more creative energy these days! Don't you think our last two meetings have been so inspiring?! Annette Mc Master left us all wanting to know more - and her work is so-o amazing! Seeing the way Elaine Barnard uses buttons on her quilts has left me looking at buttons with fresh eyes too. I’m sure, like me, you have a button box, collected over the

The Broken Lawnmower When our lawnmower broke and wouldn’t run, my wife kept hinting to me that I should get it fixed. But somehow, I always had something else to take care of first:- the truck, the car, playing golf. Always something more important to me. Finally she thought of a clever way of making her point . When I arrived home one day, I found her seated in the tall grass busily snipping away with a pair of sewing scissors. I watched silently for a while and then went into the house. I was only gone a minute and when I came out again, I handed her a toothbrush. I said,” When you finish cutting the grass, you might as well sweep the driveway.” The doctors say I will walk again but I will always have A limp.

Let’s Go A-Maying
ay M
There is an English custom that brings in the warm and sunny days of May. Young people went out on May Day to gather blossoms for a May Day celebration. The highlight ofthis comes when ribbons and flowers are wound around a maypole set up in the village green. However, in America, this custom has been changed and people are more likelyto visit plant nurseries or select flowers to plant for May Day.

In this way, the colours of the flowers can be enjopyed for weeks to come. Quilters have an even better way of celebrating MAY Day. We can make colourful quilt with favourite flowers. Fabric flowers never die , they can be enjoyed all year round There is nothing like going aMaying through a fabric stash and then creating a May Day treat that will last for many years to come. DEAR JANE: The quilt Jane made Jane Austen ws both fond of - and good at needlework. Several pieces of her work survive and can be seen at the Jane Austons House Museum in the Chawton, Hampshire, UK., Including a hand embroidered Indian muslin tucker, a white embroidered lawn handkerchief and a patchwork quilt made by herself., Her sister, Cassandram and her mother at the beginning of the 19th century. In May 1811, in a letter to Cassandra, Jane asked” Have you remembered to collect pieces for the Patchwork?- We are now at a standstill.” This very fine patchwork quilt uses 64 different fabrics. The quilt is worked using two sizes of lozenge diamond and a rhomboid shape of a black and white spotted fabric for the light coloured “trellis”
effect dividing the diamonds. Each diamond shaped patch is placed in a sequence of four around a central diamond shapefloral motif featuring a basket of flowers. The quilt has a deep border of smaller diamond patches adorned with landscap es and flowers. The quilt today has been resited. It used to be hung over a rail in Jane’s room but it has now been placed on a bed in the Costume room. This room is dust and finger free and the lights only come on when anyone is looking at the display. PINCUSHIONS A pincushion (or less commonly pin cushion) is a small cushion, typically 3–5 cm across, which is used in sewing to store pins or needles with their heads protruding so as to take hold of them easily, collect them, and keep them tidy. Pincushions are typically filled tightly with stuffing, so as to hold pins rigidly once placed. The stereotypical design – a tomato with a strawberry attached – seems to have been around forever but, most likely, was introduced during the Victorian Era. The tomato shape was most likely chosen because when pincushions became mass-produced, this was the easiest shape to produce. Typically, the tomato is filled with wool roving to prevent rust, and the strawberry is filled with an abrasive to clean the pins and remove burrs. Pincushions come in all shapes, sizes and forms. Magnetic pincushions have the advantage of being able to easily keep the work area clear of pins, but the drawback that the pins become magnetized easily and an attempt to retrieve one may pick up several.
