ed’s note How do you like your winter holiday? Hot? Or cold? That’s the desperate tussle playing itself out in family homes across the country as we speak. Okay, maybe that’s overstating a smidge, but so often when the topic comes up of where to go to fend off winter blues, households can be stubbornly divided. One half is all for heading somewhere hot with a beach; the other is already outside fitting the ski rack to the roof of the car. How do you resolve the dispute? I have no idea. If you come up with one let me know. Sorry if you thought these were going to be some Oprah-style words of wisdom. Maybe just blindfold yourself and open this winter Travel magazine at a random page and let that be your decision. There are ski holidays, beach holidays, driving holidays, boat cruises, air cruises and short break ideas. The only thing we’re missing is a skifield on a tropical island. Sorry.

Expanding horizons Driving across Australia’s Savannah Way is a lesson in scale, particularly for Kiwis used to getting wherever they want in no more than a few hours’ drive. But this epic backcountry road trip from coast to coast through three states across the top of Australia is also a lesson in our neighbour’s stunning, hugely varied landscape, from dramatic gorges and eucalyptus forests to tiny pit-stop towns and vast red and gold plains.

T

he Savannah Way stretches 3700km from Broome in Western Australia’s Kimberley region on the west coast to Cairns in the east, taking in five world heritage sites and more than a dozen national parks. Take civilised sealed roads or do it the adventurous way along 4WD-only dustbowl back roads. The “Way” is well signposted along most of its length and you can easily deviate to other sites along the route. Give yourself at least three weeks do the whole thing, though longer is better, or, if time is against you, pick a section. To give you a taste, here’s a look at some of the highlights of the eastern stretch from Katherine in Northern Territory to Cairns on the Queensland coast.

Katherine: About four hours south of Darwin on the famous Stuart Highway (which will take you all the way down to Adelaide) Katherine is key supply and fuel stop. Give yourself at least a day though to explore the rugged rock-scapes of nearby Katherine Gorge. Back in town, stop at the Top Didj Art Gallery and have a go at creating your own Aboriginal-style painting – or admire beautiful works by local indigenous artists. Camp the night at Territory Manor, Mataranka and take a dip in nearby Bitter Springs natural thermal pools. Roper Bar to Butterfly Springs Limmen National Park: Think of the Australian Outback and images of a never-ending, unchanging red desert spring to mind. Watching it through the window as you drive the pock-marked back roads, you realise that’s underselling it terribly. It changes constantly in colour from red to orange, then gold and back again, punctuated by sculptural anthills and architectural, often charred eucalyptus trees. Every now and then it’s punctuated again by cool watering holes, where any Aussie travel companions will gleefully point out spots only recently vacated by crocodiles. To cool off in a croc-free environment, camp and swim beneath the cliffs at Butterfly Springs in Limmen National Park. Lost City, Cape Crawford: Accessible only by helicopter, the tall, pancaked spires of the Lost City near Cape Crawford are like something from another planet. Some of the rocky towers stand as high as 25m, in clusters broken up by waterfalls, water holes and tufts of greenery. Most tours will land you either on top of one of the larger spires or on the ground to wander through

caves and along paths for excellent views, wildlife and Aboriginal art. Seven Emu Station: The first aboriginal owned cattle station in NT and still run by its traditional owners, Seven Emu station makes a unique stopover. Camp on the cliff edge of the stunning Robinson River – complete with long-drop “loos with a view” facing the river cliffs and the sunset. Campers can join in the day-to-day activities of the farm, take a tour, or just chat to owner Frank Shadworth about the farm’s fascinating history. Lawn Hill Gorge/ Riversleigh Fossil Fields: Paddle your way down eerily still waters framed by towering red-tinged cliffs at Lorne Hill Gorge in Boodjamulla National Park. Once you’ve paddled to the ridiculously picturesque Indarri Falls, either park up for a refreshing swim or carry your canoe around the falls and keep going. Pitch a tent or rent a cabin at beautiful Adele’s Grove camping ground and spend a few days exploring the walkways and waterways of the national park. One must-visit is the World Heritage-listed Riversleigh Fossil Fields, a sprawling 10,000ha limestone plateau near Mt Isa and one of the richest fossil sites in the world. A guided tour is a great idea to make the most of the fossil sites, and if the kids are with you they will love the stories of prehistoric Australian terrors like the “Drop Croc” – a giant tree-dwelling ancestor to the crocodile. Sunset at Karumba, Gulf of Carpentaria: Sitting at the mouth of the Normanton River where it flows into the Gulf of Carpentaria, the small, seaside town of Karumba has long

5

Australia

been favoured by fisherman keen to tussle with barramundi. The surrounding wetlands also make it a pilgrimage point for bird watchers and walkers. But, come late afternoon, there’s only one place to be – in the beer garden at Sunset Tavern, looking out at what is surely one of the world’s most spectacular sunsets. The huge sun flames bright red, lighting the sky in yellows, oranges and pinks, before sinking into the sea. When the show’s over sate yourself with a platter of the best seafood – mud crab, prawns, barramundi – you’ll taste anywhere. The other natural phenomenon you can see here is the gulf’s famed Morning Glory cloud. The odd, long tubular clouds are found in only two or three places around the world. Cobbold Gorge: A guided boat tour through the narrow maze-like waterways, snaking between huge striped sandstone cliffs is a little like stepping back to a prehistoric era. Spot surprisingly delicate looking freshwater crocodiles snoozing on the banks, take a bushwalk, or fish for more of those barramundi. Undara National Park: The stars of Undara are undoubtedly the vast lava tubes created by an eruption almost 200,000 years ago, by one massive lava flow that melted its way for 100km through rock walls. As well as an excellent exploration spot for tourists, some of the tubes are home to Undara’s large population of microbats. Undara guides run trips to the caves on dusk, where, with the help of some trick lighting, you can see the tiny creatures swarm out of the caves at high speed in search of

7

8

insects. It’s an incredible, unique wildlife experience – though the snake phobic should be aware that trees above your viewing point are often home to hungry tiger snakes keen on microbats for dinner. Skyrail Rainforest Cableway: It’s not strictly part of the Savannah Way but, if you can persuade someone to drive your car the rest of the way into Cairns, cruising to the end of the route via a 7.5km cableway down through the rainforest feels like a long cold drink at the end of a long hot drive. You can pause at points on the ride down to wander among the World Heritage Listed rainforest, or just enjoy the stunning view on the leisurely ride down. - Kerri Jackson Tips • Large sections of the main Savannah Way route from Roper Bar to Normanton are unsealed, suitable for 4WD only, and often closed in the wet season (December to March). But if you’re not in a 4WD there are alternate sealed roads. • For a full rundown of the route and suggested stopovers visit www.savannahway.com.au

BOMC_SST_TRAVEL 6_MAY 12

For full details and online booking go to www.bayofmanycoves.co.nz or FREEPHONE 0800 5799 771 (NZ only)

• Mindil Beach Sunset Markets. Every Sunday and Thursday in the dry season (May to October) Mindil Beach becomes a thriving market, selling amazing international food as well as arts and crafts, and it seems as though almost the whole city comes out to play and watch the entertainment. • Meet the locals. Northern Territory has more crocodiles than anywhere else

in the world and you can get up close and personal with them at Crocosaurus Cove. The brave can choose to plummet inside the croc pools in the Cage of Death, the more sensible may choose to watch from behind a nice sturdy wall. To see crocodiles in their natural habitat take a wildlife cruise among the wetlands of Mary River National Park. • Darwin Military Museum. For a sobering but informative look at the bombing of Darwin in World War II, the Military Museum is a must-visit. The city was bombed 64 times over two years starting on February 19, 1942. The museum offers a detailed all-round history of the city’s war experience. There are also city-wide tours that take

in other key military sites. • Cool off. Though it’s almost surrounded by the sea, swimming in it is a no-no in Darwin thanks to those bitey crocs. Instead hit the Darwin Waterfront where you can ride the swell in the Wave Pool, or try the manmade beach at Recreation Lagoon. Alternatively there are great croc-free swimming holes, under waterfalls at Litchfield National Park. • Tiwi Islands. Bathurst and Melville make up the Tiwi Islands, about 100km north of Darwin. Accessible via plane or ferry, the islands offer amazing indigenous cultural experiences, as well as fishing and rare wildlife. www.travelnt.com

• In Honolulu, Pearl Harbour is a must-see but arrive early to avoid queues. Entry is free but there are also some great organised tours, from about NZ$100 per person, which include the Arizona Memorial and a city tour. For shopping the Ala Moana shopping centre is excellent; as is the Waikele Premium Outlet. Get around on the “trolley” old-fashioned bus, which does a loop around the city. • Treat yourself to dinner at Michel’s. It’s at the foot of Diamond Head and has great views of the ocean. • If you’re on a budget, there are some fantastic selfcatering apartments such as the Aston Waikiki Sunset or the Ohana East, just a couple of blocks from the beach.

• Self-catering apartments are also a great idea on Maui, as they give you the freedom of cooking your own meals when you want. But if you want a treat head to Grandma’s Coffee House for coffee and delicious homemade pastries. I recommend getting your order to take away and having a picnic – there are so many beautiful spots to choose from. • Check out the boutique galleries, shops and restaurants in Hanalei Bay – if you have time you can even fit in some yoga. - Jackie Allan, Vuksich & Greive Travel Associates

Sounds in the Sounds C

ountry, blues and opera are the captivating musical themes for two sensational luxury packages that the five-star Bay Of Many Coves Resort in the Marlborough Sounds has planned over winter this year. Guests can listen, learn, lavish and luxuriate in what the Marlborough Sounds’ pre-eminent resort has to offer. www.bayofmanycoves.co.nz

Marlborough in winter W inter offers the perfect opportunity to experience Marlborough as frosty mornings give way to clear days ideal for getting out on the water, walking the Queen Charlotte Track, sampling the regions renowned wine and food, or absorbing some history at the world-class Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre. and blue whales — it is a place that makes you realise just how insignificant we are and at the same time makes you feel bigger than life itself. It has to be experienced to be understood,” Mr West said.

Expedition leader Robin West is a veteran of more than 40 Antarctic voyages. f you like the idea of a cruise holiday but aren’t too keen on the huge liners, or spending days or weeks at sea, here are some boat journey ideas with a difference.

• Cruise to Tahiti on the Aranui 3: Tahitia and the Marquesas are the picture-perfect cruise location, but to do it a little differently board this part-passenger, part-freight vessel as it winds its way around the islands. Passenger rooms are comfy and air-conditioned and you can still cool off in the pool and soak up the sun on deck with a cocktail, all while seeing the amazing sights from a working freight ship. www.aranui.com

• Houseboating in Australia: South Australia’s Murray River has carved out a name for itself as one of the world’s premier houseboating destinations. Think of it as a self-drive cruise option. With a lesson and safety briefing at the start of your trip you’re then in charge of navigating the wide waters of the Murrray River yourself, stopping for supplies and sight-seeing at waterside towns along the way. Visit www.southaustralia.com to start your search.

• Cruise your own backyard: Coral Princess Cruises’ small luxury ship, Oceanic Discoverer offers eight-night (Wellington to Milford Sound) and 12-night cruises (Auckland to Milford Sound) exploring the New Zealand coast. Each cruise features guest lecturers and experts to guide guests on shore expeditions to some of the country’s best, but often remote

• River cruising: Meandering the huge rivers of Europe, Asia and Africa is an excellent way to get a new perspective on some of the world’s iconic cities and historic sites. Try seeing Portugal from the Douro River, Budapest from the Danube, or some of Egypts wonders from the Nile.

Up in the air The cure for jet-lag? Tour the world by private jet

B

ill Peach Journeys, the pioneer of touring by private jet, has an important discovery to share.

“We have found the cure for jet-lag. Based on our 30 years of experience, we constantly hear feedback, especially from our experienced travellers, that long-haul flying is arduous and the least favourite part of the trip,” says Jan Musgrave, Bill Peach Journeys managing director. “To remedy this for our loyal guests who are very keen to travel to far and exotic places, we’ve created a programme that takes our guests as far as Europe and the Middle East, but cuts out any long flying sectors.” The trip? The incredible “Passage Through Ancient Cultures international aircruise”. Also known as the Sydney to London Aircruise, the journey offers 30 lucky guests the opportunity to travel through Asia, into India, the Middle East and Europe, while

Cruise the seven seas R egent Seven Seas Cruises is the world’s most inclusive luxury cruise line. With three award-winning, all-suite vessels that are among the most spacious at sea, the line is proud to carry such accolades as “Best for Luxury – Cruise Critic Editors Pick Awards 2012”, and “Best Cabins – Conde Nast Traveler 2012”. Mid-size ships host only 490 or 700 pampered guests, and included in your cruise fare are

shore excursions, a luxury hotel package (conditions apply), pre-paid gratuities, beverages including fine wine & spirits, in-suite mini bar, room service and no additional charge for speciality restaurants.

Right now for a limited time, selected 2013 European voyages also offer free unlimited internet access and a US$300 shipboard credit per suite. See your travel agent for details or visit www.RSSC.com

incredibly flying for only three hours or less, per flying day. Two remarkably different itineraries are available, starting in either London or Sydney, so guests are able to complete the entire journey, again with only “short-haul” flights. “The cure for jet-lag is to travel far and wide, but in a short-haul manner, and we are delighted to offer our guests this incredible journey,”says Musgrave. These stunning journeys depart in September 2013 and highlights include: • Visiting the orangutans in Kuching, Malaysia • Lunch on the cliffs of Santorini • Experiencing the Taj Mahal at sunrise • Seeing the awe-inspiring Abu Simbel Temples in Southern Egypt • Staying in Knightsbridge in London The 17-day Sydney to London air cruise and 18-day London to Sydney air cruise depart in September 2013 and are priced from $29,995. Book the journey in both directions and you’ll save an additional $1000 per person. www.billpeachjourneys.com.au

• Manganui, Mt Taranaki •

Kiwi snow bunnies are well versed in the world-class facilities and breathtaking scenery of our biggest ski and snowboard fields – but for something little more low-key and often less crowded there some excellent smaller, less well-known options.

• Rainbow, Nelson Lakes •

www.skitaranaki.co.nz

Where: About 90 minutes drive inland from Nelson and about 80 minutes from Blenheim.

• Porters, Canterbury •

• Tukino, Mt Ruapehu, Central Plateau • Where: 35km from Waiouru on the eastern side of Ruapehu; access is via a 4WD-only road, or a shuttle service from the car park, on request. Facilities: Tukino’s 50ha ski area covers a 220m vertical drop; there are two tow lifts or can pay to “cat ski” where the snowcat groomer will drop you at the field boundary. There’s a ski school, cafe and on-mountain accommodation. There are runs suitable for beginners, intermediate and advanced skiers. A club skifield open to the public, Tukino offers great snow without the crowds of Whakapapa and Turoa. www.tukino.co.nz

Facilities: Rainbow is accessed via an alternate mountain road up from St Arnaud. Chains must be carried, even if you think conditions won’t warrant them. The main T-Bar lift goes all the way to the top of the ridge line at 1758m, from where there are stunning views. There’s a snow school, cafe, toboggan hire to keep the kids happy and a good mix of runs to suit all levels. www.skirainbow.co.nz • Ohau, McKenzie Country •

Where: 54km from New Plymouth Facilities: Access is along a 16km sealed road to the carpark and from there it’s a 20-minute walk to the field, with a goods lift halfway. The 59ha ski area includes 17 different runs over a vertical drop of 420m, with the longest run at 2km. About 65per cent of the field is at advanced level.

Where: About 80 minutes drive west of Christchurch. Facilities: Porters has one of the easiest access roads of any skifield in the country but there are also several shuttle services from surrounding towns. A snow mat services the beginner area, there are three T-bar lifts and a platter lift on one of the intermediate runs. There’s also a terrain park and several advanced runs, including a couple of “expert-only”drops. www.skiporters.co.nz

Where: 320km southwest of Christchurch, on Mt Sutton.

• Roundhill, Lake Tekapo •

Facilities: Access is by a 4WD-only road, and there is a shuttle service. From the top of the chairlift there are 125ha of snowfields spanning a 375m vertical drop. There’s snow-making, snow school, gear rental and a good number of trails for all levels. The learners’ area features an easy-to-use snow mat to return to the top of the run and natural terrain areas. There’s great accommodation at Lake Ohau lodge, a 20-minute drive from the fields.

Facilities: As well as spectacular views of Aoraki Mt Cook and Lake Tekapo, Roundhill has 550ha of terrain rising 783m. There’s a ski rental and snow school, a terrain park as well as back-country skiing and snow-making facilities. Unwind at either Two Thumbs Cafe or von Brown Hut at the top of the T-bar.

A Grand Tour of South America

C

hris Lyons of World Journeys left New Zealand for the first time in 1975 with a pack on his back, and headed for South America. Twelve months and many adventures later, he was hooked. Now escorting small groups of Kiwis to South America every year for Auckland-based World Journeys, Chris says, “I love sharing these wonderful places with others, and they love that I take care of all the tipping and take all the hassle out of travel.” World Journeys’ Grand Tour of South America hand-picks the top experiences around the continent, from cruising the Galapagos Islands, to an eco-lodge in the Amazon, Machu Picchu at sunrise, nights out in Rio de Janeiro, and the café culture of Buenos Aires. The highlights are endless. For further information or to talk to Chris Lyons call 0800 117311 or visit www.worldjourneys.co.nz

Go all-inclusive

F

ancy a tropical island break with the kids, but want it to be fuss-free? Consider an all-inclusive resort. Club Med resorts include all food and beverages (except premium brands) in the booking price – so no nasty surprise bills at the end of your trip. Plus the resorts offer all-day dining, meaning the kids can eat when they’re hungry rather than at set meal times – and, best of all, most Club Med resorts offer Kids Club activities programmes for all children from babies to teenagers. Club Med is currently offering 40 per cent off packages

to its Phuket resort in Thailand. A seven-night all-inclusive package is now $2559 per adults, and $1709 per child. Available for sale until May 31 and travel before October 31. The recently renovated resort features a new quiet pool for adults and a la carte restaurant. There’s a nine-hole golf course and it’s the only resort situated on the beachfront in Kata Bay, one of the best beaches in Phuket – great for swimming, walking distance to local markets and a short tuk tuk ride to Patong. www.clubmed.co.nz

Make the most of Duty Free

H

ave you wandered through the departures or arrivals hall of any airport, drawn to the delights of Duty Free shopping but never quite sure at what point of your journey is the best time to buy or how to make the most of the bargains, settling instead for the hasty purchase of some spirits on your way home? Never fear. The team at Duty Free Stores New Zealand have some tips:

• To get the biggest savings on Duty Free you are generally always best pre-purchasing your goods online. Your Duty Free goods are then delivered on your behalf to the airport for pick-up at the designated collection point. For departures this is after immigration and

security and for arrivals this is before Customs and baggage collection. • Think about the best time to purchase liquids when you’re departing an airport, due to the Liquids, Aerosols and Gels (LAGS) Security restrictions. You can purchase Duty Free liquids, aerosols and gels online or in-store when you are on a direct flight but not on a transit flight. The exception for this is when you are transiting through an Australian airport on to a final destination as the Duty Free operator can put your goods in a sealed bag which is allowed through Australian airports. If your goods are confiscated you will not be able to claim compensation from your Duty Free provider. • As well as lower cost, sometimes consumers also benefit from being to buy exclusive products now available through high street retailers. An example of this is the ‘Explorer’ range of Johnnie Walker Scotch made available only through Duty Free retailers. www.dutyfreestores.co.nz
